- Description: Studies are reported which describes the effectiveness of triethylammonium formate in the presence of magnesium for the efficient intermolecular pinacol coupling using MeOH as solvent. Various aromatic carbonyls underwent smooth reductive coupling to give the corresponding 1,2-diols. A series of azo compounds were obtained by the reductive coupling of nitroaromatics while azo compounds were reduced to the corresponding hydrazoarenes by this system. There was no adverse effect on the other reducible and hydrogenolysable groups such as ether linkage, hydroxy and halogens. The reactions are clean, high yielding and inexpensive. All the reactions proceeded smoothly at ambient temperature.

The current weed management is oriented towards finding approaches that are effective in controlling the weed and reducing environmental contamination from herbicides. Plant pathogens have been gaining increasing attention and interest among those concerned with developing environmentally friendly, effective and compatible approaches for integrated management of the noxious weeds. This paper discusses some of the major microbial agents associated with aquatic weeds and their increasing role in integrated weed management.

Acoustic telemetry data for 10 tagged catfish were analyzed to identify spatial patterns in home ranges and seasonal changes in habitat associations. Long-distance movements were observed for most catfish from common central release point, whereas short-distance movements defined their home ranges and utilization distributions that were categorized as localized within single or multiple habitats. Habitat selection was non-random with most catfish utilizing the shallow river mouth and upper section of the reservoir that were dominated by a rocky substratum interspersed with submerged trees. These localities were likely to be preferred for spawning and/or feeding. Utilization of these habitats by catfish is likely to be associated with probable impact due to predation and interference competition for feeding and breeding grounds with other species. Although most catfish maintained their home ranges throughout the study, seasonal shifts in habitat use, which was reflected by the utilization of deep and silt-dominated habitats, were also observed for some catfish. Non-random habitat use and homing behaviour within single and multiple habitats by non-native sharptooth catfish suggests that its impact within the invaded habitats may be associated with particular habitats both at broad spatial and temporal scales. Protection of habitats from catfish invasion should be considered as a management option to conserve native biota.

The membranes were hydrophilic (25° to 63°), showed high humic acid rejection (>amp;80%), and maintained a constant flux throughout the filtration. The modified membranes were rougher than the pristine PSf membranes but they exhibited better antifouling properties due to the hydrophilic surface which acted as a barrier against humic acid deposition. The modification of PSf with β-CD-HPEI resulted in enhanced hydrophilicity and water permeability while still maintaining high humic acid rejection. - Description: This article uses the appraisal system to expose covert meanings surrounding white supremacist Eugène Terre’Blanche’s murder in editorials from three South African newspapers: The Citizen, Sowetan and The Times. Following Martin and White’s (2005) framework, inscribed and evoked Attitudinal meanings are identified to prove an ‘us versus them’ perspective of Terre’Blanche’s death. Graduation and Engagement strategies supplement this, illustrating how meanings are modified or organized to align readers. The analysis reveals surface attempts to present a ‘balanced view’ of this racially-sensitive event; however, beneath this is clear blame allocation. Additionally, the covert evaluation is explained by Coffin and O’Halloran’s (2006) theory of ‘dog-whistling’, where only aligned readers can detect underlying meanings. This creates the imagined community – ‘us’ – of which the newspaper is seen as a trusted member. Print media, it could be inferred, is symbolic of other South African community members, who mask their evaluations with a politically correct façade.

- Description: Environmental nutrient availability can drive and modify both plant responses to herbivory by phytophagous insects and insect feeding patterns which, in insect-weed systems, may ultimately determine whether biological control succeeds or fails. The impacts of insect biological control agents on the invasive aquatic weed, water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) vary with nutrient levels in the environment. It was therefore considered important to evaluate nutrient-specific responses of E. crassipes to a grasshopper herbivore, Cornops aquaticum, prior to its release in South Africa. Both plant productivity and the response of E. crassipes to herbivory by C. aquaticum were nutrient dependent. Increases in plant biomass and leaf and ramet production were correlated with increases in nutrients in the water and plant biomass accumulation was reduced by herbivory at all three nutrient levels tested (high = 67%; medium = 100%; low = 400%). - Description: Environmental nutrient availability can drive and modify both plant responses to herbivory by phytophagous insects and insect feeding patterns which, in insect-weed systems, may ultimately determine whether biological control succeeds or fails. The impacts of insect biological control agents on the invasive aquatic weed, water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) vary with nutrient levels in the environment. It was therefore considered important to evaluate nutrient-specific responses of E. crassipes to a grasshopper herbivore, Cornops aquaticum, prior to its release in South Africa. Both plant productivity and the response of E. crassipes to herbivory by C. aquaticum were nutrient dependent. Increases in plant biomass and leaf and ramet production were correlated with increases in nutrients in the water and plant biomass accumulation was reduced by herbivory at all three nutrient levels tested (high = 67%; medium = 100%; low = 400%). In order to safeguard the integrity of these biopesticides as well as protect against any future development of resistance in the host, we conducted a study to bioprospect for additional CrleGV isolates as alternatives to existing ones. Using overcrowding as an induction method for latent infection, we recovered five new CrleGV isolates (CrleGV-SA Ado, CrleGV-SA Mbl, CrleGV-SA Cit, CrleGV-SA MixC and CrleGV-SA Nels). Single restriction endonuclease (REN) analysis of viral genomic DNA extracted from purified occlusion bodies showed that isolates differed in their DNA profiles. Partial sequencing of granulin and egt genes from the different isolates and multiple alignments of nucleotide sequences revealed the presence of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), some of which resulted in amino acid substitutions in the protein sequence. Based on these findings as well as comparisons with other documented CrleGV isolates, we propose two phylogenetic groups for CrleGV-SA isolates recovered in this study.

The relationship between polymer concentration and fiber diameter was investigated, and at high concentration (20 wt%) the fibers were quite large (average diameter of 3.8 μm) but as the concentration was reduced fibers of much lower diameter were produced (0.6 μm using 8 wt%). The BET surface area for p(ST-co-VPIM) fibers (0.6 μm diameter) was 47.9 m2 g−1 and functionalization of p(ST-co-VPIM) with vanadyl resulted in an increase in surface area to 60.7 m2 g−1 for p(ST-co-VPIM)-VO. The presence of vanadyl was confirmed by XPS and EPR. The EPR spectral analyses depicted complex speciation of vanadium within these polymer supports. These catalytic fibers were applied under batch and continuous flow conditions for the catalytic oxidation of thioanisole using hydrogen peroxide. The continuous flow method gave excellent and constant conversion throughout the 10 h period studied. The leaching of vanadium from the fiber support was 4% over the 10 h period indicating a significant stability of the material.

The disparities in PGS between the two towns were also replicated in different suburbs within the two towns. We hypothesised that levels of dissatisfaction would be highest in those suburbs and the town with the least PGS. The results indicated that the distance from residents’ homesteads to the nearest PGS was similar across towns and suburbs. Most residents felt that having accessible PGS was important, and the majority agreed that there was insufficient PGS in their respective town and suburb, and that the local municipality did not do enough in providing PGS or maintaining what there was. The level of dissatisfaction with the amount and condition of PGS was generally highest in the suburbs and town with the least PGS. Many felt that the municipality had insufficient commitment and funds to adequately maintain PGS, and consequently the willingness of residents to get involved through either a commitment of time or funds was high. The more affluent town and suburbs were willing to pay more than the poorer ones, and the poorer ones were willing to provide more time than the more affluent ones.

The post-apartheid South African government subscribes to this idea; its social policies aim to provide ‘a better life for all’. Since the coming of democracy in 1994, the state has built over 3 million houses and supplied electricity and clean water to poor households. By 2009, an estimated 43 % of households were beneficiaries of social grants. The question is whether this investment in services and social assistance translates into higher well-being of citizens. It is argued that older people’s experience of positive change in their life circumstances can be taken as a litmus test of progress in society. The paper reports results of a sample survey conducted in 2009 that inquired into the living circumstances and well-being of 1,000 older low-income households in two provinces linked by a labour migration route. Older households were defined as ones with a member 55 years and older. The sample was drawn among three approximately equal-sized subgroups: Rural black households in the former ‘homelands’ of the Eastern Cape Province, and black and coloured households in Cape Town in the Western Cape Province. The majority of the households in the survey had been interviewed in an earlier survey conducted in late 2002. Both material and non-material changes had occurred in the household situation over the 6-year period between 2002 and 2009. Access to housing and infrastructure had improved but financial difficulties and debts continued to plague many of the surveyed households. Rural black households appeared to be worst off among the three categories of older households with the lowest level of living; coloured households best situated with the highest level of living. Urban black households, many of whom were immigrants to Cape Town, appeared to have experienced the greatest fluctuations in their material circumstances between 2002 and 2009 and a mix of fortune and misfortune. Results indicated that social grants, which provided a modicum of financial security and peace of mind, made the crucial difference between fortune and misfortune for vulnerable households. Securing a social pension and other grants appeared to be the main route to good fortune for the rural households in the study. Households in Cape Town required wage income in addition to grant income to get by in the city. This mix of income sources diluted urban households’ dependence on social assistance. Regression model results suggest that income and financial security play a significantly more important role in boosting the well-being of low-income older households than access to services. Pooling of income, a common practice in pensioner households, contributed significantly to household satisfaction.

Urban black households, many of whom were immigrants to Cape Town, appeared to have experienced the greatest fluctuations in their material circumstances between 2002 and 2009 and a mix of fortune and misfortune. Results indicated that social grants, which provided a modicum of financial security and peace of mind, made the crucial difference between fortune and misfortune for vulnerable households. Securing a social pension and other grants appeared to be the main route to good fortune for the rural households in the study. Households in Cape Town required wage income in addition to grant income to get by in the city. This mix of income sources diluted urban households’ dependence on social assistance. Regression model results suggest that income and financial security play a significantly more important role in boosting the well-being of low-income older households than access to services. Pooling of income, a common practice in pensioner households, contributed significantly to household satisfaction.

Persistence and virulence of promising entomopathogenic fungal isolates for use in citrus orchards in South Africa

- Description: Thaumatotibia leucotreta (Meyrick) (1912) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) is a key economic pest of citrus in South Africa. Although a variety of control options are available, none currently registered target the soil-dwelling life stages of the pest. Three fungal isolates, two Metarhizium anisopliae sensu lato Metschnikoff (Sorokin) isolates (G 11 3 L6 and FCM Ar 23 B3) and one Beauveria bassiana sensu lato Balsamo (Vuillemin) isolate (G Ar 17 B3) have been identified as showing the greatest potential against T. leucotreta soil-dwelling life stages. Since environmental persistence is an important factor in the success of entomopathogenic fungi against soil pests, the isolates, along with two commercial isolates (B. bassiana Eco-Bb® and M. anisopliae ICIPE 69), were subjected to a six-month field persistence trial. Every month after burial of the fungal isolates, inside net bags, in orchard soil, the number of colony forming units (CFUs) per gram of soil was measured and the viability of the conidia was assessed using bioassays. All isolates investigated were capable of persisting in the soil for the duration of the trial period and in addition, were capable of initiating infection in T. leucotreta late fifth instar larvae and subsequent pupae. However, with the exception of the commercial isolates which showed some correlation, no correlation was found between the number of CFUs recorded and percentage T. leucotreta mycosis. Persistence of entomopathogenic fungi in the field is affected by a series of factors, and although the effect of these factors was not measured, the data have provided preliminary evidence towards the persistence capability of these candidate biopesticides against T. leucotreta.
