- Description: The purpose of this research study was to explore the interventions NGOs used in addressing the prevalence of HIV/AIDS along with an exploration of the management and causal factors behind project failures and success. Five districts in the province of the Eastern Cape, South Africa were used in the study. The study had three objectives- the first being to identify the various approaches used to manage HIV/AIDS by NGOs; the second was to consider the influence HIV/AIDS policies on the health sector NGOs and finally the third objective of the study was to explore the monitoring and evaluation mechanism set in place to track progress, or lack of, in HIV/AIDS programs. The research design followed a qualitative methodology and data was gathered from ten participants through semi-structured interviews and supported by a document analysis of existing HIV and AIDS policies from both a national and provincial level which were qualitative. The findings showed that a lack of adequate or delayed funding affected the overall performance of NGOs as well as approaches such as home-based care and educational support programs. Resource mobilization and fundraising ought to be diversified so that there is a committed and varied pool of funds to enable the execution of HIV/AIDS services and programs. The government and other stakeholders should build on local capacity to implement these various programs and build financial, social and organizational sustainability.

In addition, the negative stigma associated with HIV/AIDS has been a looming issue since 2004 which continues to undermine efforts of NGOs in their means to manage HIV/AIDS. The consequences of stigma from the findings are treatment adherence issues and little to no attendance of HIV/AIDS programs provided by the respective NGOs. Effective planning and management along with capacitated staff and volunteers increased the positive outcome of HIV/AIDS programs and services offered by the NGOs. From the study findings, it is recommended that the planning of HIV/AIDS approaches should consider resource planning to avoid abandoning projects midway due to a lack of resources. The management and monitoring of NGOs within the health sector, dealing with epidemics such as HIV/AIDS need to build on flexibility in implementation and have effective risk assessments in place as a contingency, so that corrective action is taken. Resource mobilization and fundraising ought to be diversified so that there is a committed and varied pool of funds to enable the execution of HIV/AIDS services and programs. The government and other stakeholders should build on local capacity to implement these various programs and also build financial, social and organizational sustainability.

- Description: Crime has been prevalent in South Africa, particularly in Port Elizabeth where violent crimes such as attempted murder, murder, sexual offences, robbery and hijacking have been reported to the South African Police Service. These violent crimes are mostly prevalent in police precincts such as Gelvandale, Bethelsdorp, Kwazakhele, New Brighton and Walmer. As a result, development in these police precincts has been affected negatively. This is highlighted by how developmental issues such as poverty and unemployment have been ubiquitous due to the manner with which crime has an effect on development. ICT companies are continuously providing solutions to crime-related challenges. The emergence of new technologies, such as CCTV surveillance cameras, drones and facial recognition software have been proven to be a solution to combating crime in some developing countries in Africa. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine the challenges of electronic surveillance in combating crime and addressing developmental issues in Port Elizabeth. The study found out that the developmental issues faced by communities in Port Elizabeth include unemployment, poverty, a high crime rate, substance abuse, and a lack of resources. In addition, the study concluded that, the lack of education and skills development, gangsterism, unemployment and poverty were amongst the main causes of crime in Port Elizabeth. The study also revealed that, the SAPS does not have enough electronic surveillance devices such as CCTV cameras installed in high crime areas, thus, recommendations were made on how electronic surveillance can be used to combat crime and address developmental issues

There has been increased attention on the restructuring process of the health sector reform but little priority has been given as to how to decentralise key human resources functions. A guiding policy was developed and endorsed in 2014, but still excludes how these human resources functions are to be decentralised. Inclusion in organisations following disability

- Description: Given the prevalence of disability in South Africa and specifically amongst the working population, this study explores the experiences of individuals who have been rendered disabled following injury and have returned to work. This study used a qualitative research design, specifically from an interpretative perspective to gain an understanding of individuals’ experiences of inclusion in organisations following disability due to injury. The phenomenological approach was best suited to this study in terms of its provision of valuable data collection directly from the participants, based on their own unique experiences. The research methodology was based on a multiple case study approach. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 identified participants through purposive sampling. Through thematic analysis, five themes of inclusion were identified including ‘supportive relationships’, ‘organisational support, accommodation and policies’, ‘nature of the working environment’, ‘work ability and financial implications’ and finally ‘personal well-being’. Furthermore, for each of the primary themes, 12 sub-themes were identified. These themes and sub-themes were explored in relation to participant experiences of inclusion as well as linking specific literature of inclusion, return-to-work and disability models to the themes presented. Linking the findings to existing theoretical models of inclusion provided context with many of the themes identified also evident within the theoretical models. The factors identified within the themes of inclusion were conceptualised at different systemic levels with eight factors identified at the macro-organisational level, nine factors at the meso-group level and eight factors at the micro-group level. These identified factors could aid organisations and policymakers to ensure the effective inclusion of individuals with disabilities in organisations.

In an effort to improve the current situation, the purpose of this study was to identify which aspects of microfinance are vital and which business practices are essential to enhance business performance and achieve sustainability. - Description: By 2030, the majority of the world's population will live in urban areas and the farming populations we see today will be less. For the foreseeable future, meeting the needs of the future means confronting the problems that small farmers face in their daily struggle. The South African experience in relation to the agricultural sector is still principally dualistic, comprising of the large-scale commercial farming dominated by white farmers as well as small-scale sectors dominated by black farmers and this is distinctive in the local context of writings on agricultural and rural development. As a result, the government has adopted various approaches to promote Transformation in the sector, with mixed results. The well-known are the agricultural development programmes and black farmer empowerment programmes which also include land reform. This paper reviews one of the agricultural development programmes which seek to empower small holder farmers. The study assesses the impact of the National Wool Growers Association (NWGA) Wool Programme on the communal farmers productivity and agricultural income in Amahlathi Local Municipality. The NWGA has been the custodian for transformation and it has been a good vehicle to represent all wool producers in South Africa. The research discovered that the programme has a positive influence on productivity and agricultural income, yet there is a room for improvement both for the NWGA and the government. Psychological capital and work engagement of employees at a training academy

- Description: Having an engaged workforce gives an organisation a competitive advantage. Levels of work engagement are influenced by, amongst other factors, Psychological Capital (PsyCap). The main aim of this study is to determine the influence of PsyCap on the levels of work engagement of employees at a Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college. This study employed a descriptive quantitative research approach with a cross-sectional correlational design. A composite paper-and-pencil questionnaire was distributed to all employees at the TVET college. The questionnaire consisted of the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) and PsyCap Questionnaire (PCQ). Descriptive statistics were used to describe the sample (n =195). The relationship between the two variables was analysed using Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis predicted the value of engagement based on the value of PsyCap. The study confirms previous findings that indicate that PsyCap is positively related work engagement and that work engament can predict PsyCap.

- Description: Having an engaged workforce gives an organisation a competitive advantage. Levels of work engagement are influenced by, amongst other factors, Psychological Capital (PsyCap). The main aim of this study is to determine the influence of PsyCap on the levels of work engagement of employees at a Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college. This study employed a descriptive quantitative research approach with a cross-sectional correlational design. A composite paper-and-pencil questionnaire was distributed to all employees at the TVET college. The questionnaire consisted of the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) and PsyCap Questionnaire (PCQ). Descriptive statistics were used to describe the sample (n =195). The relationship between the two variables was analysed using Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis predicted the value of engagement based on the value of PsyCap. The study confirms previous findings that indicate that PsyCap is positively related work engagement and that work engament can predict PsyCap.

The importance of examining trust from both perspectives of the organisational dyad (employer-employee) is emphasised, yet much of the research focuses on the employer’s perspective. The researcher identified a gap in trust literature pertaining to the nursing work environment and sought to examine this phenomenon from the employees’ perspective, with an emphasis on both horizontal and vertical trust relationships. Therefore, the aim of the study was to explore and describe trust experiences of registered nurses working in general wards in public hospitals of the Nelson Mandela Bay Health District (NMBHD). The study employed a qualitative, phenomenological design and was exploratory and descriptive in nature to gain insight into and depict the lived experiences of trust between participants and their peers and between participants and their superiors and subordinates. Sampling was purposive, and 14 individual, semi-structured, face-to-face interviews were conducted so that participants could describe their experiences of the phenomenon under investigation in their own words. The data was analysed using Renata Tesch’s data coding and analysis technique. Three themes emanated from the data, namely: (1) Influence of connected and caring relationships on trust among registered nurses; (2) Influence of professional competence on trust among registered nurses; and (3) Influence of values on trust among registered nurses. The findings revealed that trust or the lack of trust is a critical component underpinning the variety of relationships that exist in the general ward hospital environment. Furthermore, for registered nurses, the competence or lack of competence of colleagues serves to instil or undermine trust among one another. In addition, owing to the nature of the profession, registered nurses place a great emphasis on values, especially as these relate to patient care, and the presence or absence of these values serve to build or undermine trust among registered nurses. Some of these include the mass of diverse students entering tertiary institutions and the level of educational preparedness of these students. Moreover, the lasting legacy of Apartheid brings its own challenges in relation to widening access for students entering South African higher education institutions. There are considerable repercussions related to the costs of re-educating students and re-admitting failing students into continuously growing classes. Furthermore, there is a protruding argument that the level of student readiness/preparedness is continually declining. The above-mentioned challenges place extreme pressure on higher education institutions and their staff to provide academic support to students, along with maintaining adequate pass rates. Reflecting on the challenges faced in the South African higher educational context, it is evident that the development and implementation of academic support programmes are important. These programmes are aimed at providing quality learning and teaching and counteracting declining success rates. In addition, there is a need to transform how massification of higher education takes place, to address the challenges of diverse student profiles, dropout rates and low throughput rates. This study explored the impact of academic support interventions on academic performance by focusing on student engagement as it is the leading factor of academic success. For the purpose of this study, this was measured through the attendance of academic interventions. Student engagement may be defined as the time and energy learners dedicate to educational activities both inside and outside of the classroom, along with the policies and practices institutions use to persuade students to partake in these activities. The findings revealed that academic interventions indeed have a positive influence on student behaviour and student academic progress. The results of this study could assist the department of HRM in determining the effectiveness of academic interventions created for first year students.

- Description: Many of today’s news headlines are fraught with alarming accounts of fraud and Corruption conducted by business leaders and this study was undertaken to investigate the influence of perceived ethical leadership on employee engagement. The question has arisen whether these unethical actions among business leaders impact the perceptions of employees and whether this affects their engagement with the organisation. There has been an increase in studies on employee engagement, due to the significant positive impact that it has on an organisation and the beneficial outcomes that engaged employees produce. In this study, the research design followed a positivist approach. The research participants consisted of middle managers in the public or private sectors in South Africa. Sampling was done using a non-probability convenience sampling technique. Secondary data was collected using research data from the Nelson Mandela University Library and its online database. Primary research data was collected using self-administered, standardised questionnaires making use of a 5-point Likert scale. Data was interpreted by means of inferential statistics and biographical information. Every precaution was taken to ensure the reliability, validity and trustworthiness of the study. Ethical approval was obtained for the study from the Nelson Mandela University Research Ethics Committee as per the protocols that were in place at the time of the data collection. This study is significant in terms of the upsurge in unethical conduct in the business arena. The primary objective of this research was to determine the influence of perceived ethical leadership (Perceived Leader Integrity) on employee engagement (the factors which constitute engagement are job commitment, job satisfaction and future intentions.). In the findings, a moderate relationship was found between PLI and job commitment and job satisfaction. A negative relationship was established between PLI and future intentions. Therefore, ethical leadership had an influence on employee engagement.

The main aim of the research study was to understand whether a relationship existed between employee wellness and work engagement in a Non-Governmental organisation (NGO). The research used a cross-sectional design and a composite questionnaire to measure employee wellness and work engagement. This was a paper and pen-based questionnaire which was distributed to 160 employees. Of the 160 questionnaires distributed only 155 participants responded. These participants are employed at NGO’s based in Port Elizabeth, Johannesburg and East London. An exploratory factor analysis determined a new more reliable factor structure for PWS. Employee wellness lost items and became a three-factor structure. The results showed that the new EFA model was best suited for the present study. Work Engagement remained a three-factor structure. T-tests and ANOVAs revealed significant differences between the constructs and the demographic groups. Correlations showed the main findings of the study to be a relationship between employee wellness and work engagement in a non-governmental organisation.

- Description: Employee wellness and work engagement have a positive influence on organisational behaviour. The main aim of the research study was to understand whether a relationship existed between employee wellness and work engagement in a Non-Governmental organisation (NGO). The research used a cross-sectional design and a composite questionnaire to measure employee wellness and work engagement. This was a paper and pen-based questionnaire which was distributed to 160 employees. Of the 160 questionnaires distributed only 155 participants responded. Coastal communities face challenges in ensuring that fisheries are sustainable and resilient to the effects of climate change. The collapse of small-scale squid fisheries in South Africa in 2013-2014 raised concerns in South Africa’s fishing industry, leading to various studies that focused on the marine environment. Small-scale fisheries are important in terms of their contribution to various national economies, job creation for coastal communities and the sustainability of human existence. Society needs a detailed knowledge of the living components of natural and managed systems, as global climate changes affect the functions of ecosystems and consequently the well-being of humans. A qualitative research approach using unstructured interviews with participants was appropriate for this study. This approach gave an opportunity for participants to explain their views and provide an in-depth understanding of their social phenomena. The significance of this study is that it broadens knowledge and understanding of how small-scale fishers respond and become resilient to climate change, shocks and other risks that affect social and ecological systems negatively and assists in forecasting the likelihood of a future collapse of the fishing industry. The study’s results indicate that squid fishers’ local knowledge supports the view that there are changes in the squid stocks, with fishers detailing the changing weather patterns and climatic conditions. The squid fishers identified unsustainable fishing practices that damage the spawning areas as a problem area. There was a general concern amongst the limited number of interviewees that the future of their livelihood was in peril and changes had to be made. Local knowledge and the perceived desire to care for the environment are important for managing squid resources and fostering communities’ resilience to climate change.

In response to the challenge of unemployment, South Africa has introduced numerous policies and strategies to combat unemployment and alleviate poverty. The vision of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) is to assist South Africa with its challenge of poverty eradication and to ease the unemployment statistics while simultaneously promoting skills development for its participants and the main focus of this policy is to provide income relief for the unemployment. The aim of this research was to assess the impact of EPWP in alleviating unemployment in Grahamstown, by assessing whether or not the EPWP has had any significant influence on job creation and skills development. This study focused on programmes implemented during the period 2014-2017 which is under phase 3 of the EPWP. This study adopted a qualitative research method and followed a descriptive approach. The research method did not seek to prove a true cause-effect relationship between the variables but rather demonstrate the correlation by means of case studies, archival research and content analysis. The research results revealed the potential of the EPWP projects in job creation in the area, and that there are areas of development and challenges in order to achieve the overall purpose of the EPWP.
