- Description: This thesis explores the meaning and experience of the bodily states associated with the condition referred to as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME). It uses as a theoretical point of departure an understanding of the body as a socially constructed phenomenon and, in so dOing, offers an interpretation of illness that is seen to differ markedly from those offered by the medical and behavioural sciences. Using descriptive narrative research analysis, the thesis attempts to elicit personal trajectories of illness experience. In contrast to biomedical and social trajectories of illness, in which the interpretation and meaning given to the condition are imposed externally, personal trajectories are seen to provide unique subjective accounts of illness experience. And the value of using narrative accounts of illness is seen to lie in their ability to bring to light these individualised versions of illness experience. It is shown, in addition, that these narrative accounts of illness are also valuable in exposing the culturally shared knowledge that is employed in the process of assigning meaning to illness experiences. The aim of the thesis, then, in employing the descriptive narrative research method is to describe these shared cultural schemas. It is suggested that this approach leads to an interpretation of illness experience which sheds light on important links between the body, self and society. It is argued, more specifically, that Western capitalist society is associated with the creation of an "unnatural" environment and social context which is perceived to be inherently damaging and threatening to the well·being of those living in it; and that this assumption is pivotal to the interpretation of the illness experiences narrated and analysed for the thesis. This sociological reading of embodiment provides a basis for understanding the experience of illness, as not one simply embedded in the body or mind of the individual, but as one laden with personal meaning assimilated from, and hence revealing of, the social context in which the illness is experienced. As such, an attempt is made to provide an account of illness experience distinct from the dominant biomedical and behavioural accounts of ME.

- Description: This dissertation re-examines an era in the production and reception of English language poetry in South Africa by black writers. Intellectually the 1970's was the Black Consciousness phase of South African history and very few aspects of life in the country were untouched by the intellectual movement led by Steve Biko and other young black student leaders. The aesthetic and literary output of the time, like all other facets of South African life, exhibited the influence and pressures brought to bear by Black Consciousness. Moreover, the Black Consciousness poets introduced the most vibrant and innovative phase for English language poetry produced in South Africa. It is my contention, however, that such vibrancy and innovation has consistently been compromised by unsympathetic, often hostile, and almost-always ill-informed criticism. The dissertation offers a critique of the academic and journalistic practice of criticism in South Africa. I argue that critical practice in South Africa has been engaged throughout the twentieth century in the discursive enforcement of ‘discipline’. In his Discipline and Punish (1977) the French post-structuralist philosopher Michel Foucault demonstrated how power is wielded against oppressed/suppressed groups through self regulated proscriptions, and argued that power is a discursive rather than a corporeal phenomenon. My dissertation follows Foucault in reading the critical reception of Black Consciousness poetry as the practice of disciplinary power. The dissertation also engages critically with the poetry of Oswald Mtshali, Mongane Serote and Sipho Sepamla, and argues that their work is the inscription of black subjectivity into the literary and cultural mainstream. It situates their work within wider 6 societal debates and definitions of ‘blackness’. In this regard use is made again of Michel Foucault’s insights and methodology of discourse analysis as shown in The Archaeology of Knowledge (1972). I argue that Oswald Mtshali’s work is a failed attempt at a dissection of apartheid and colonialism from a broadly Christian and humanist perspective. In my reading of Mongane Serote I explore the relationship between women’s bodies and the practice of representation. It is my contention that Serote is most concerned with claims of belonging, and this is shown through his extensive use of the trope of ‘Mother’. My discussion of the poetry of Sipho Sepamla focuses on language and (self- )representation, particularly the use of practices of naming in constructing subjectivity. My contention is that Sepamla ultimately abandons attempts at representation in favour of oppositional self-construction in language. In the concluding chapter I defend the thesis that the politics of discipline have prevented the broad critical establishment from gaining access to these discursive constructions of blackness in the committed poetry of South Africa.

In the course of my reading I discovered that most of the evil women in his novels are mothers, or mother-figures, a finding which altered the nature of my interpretation and led to closer examination of these characters, rather than the prostitutes and criminals who may have been viewed negatively by Nineteenth century society and thereby condemned as evil. Among the many unsympathetically portrayed mothers and mother-figures in Dickens's works, the three that are most interesting are Lady Dedlock, Miss Havisham, and Mrs Skewton. Madame Defarge initiates the discussion, however, as a seminal figure among the many evil women in the novels. Psychoanalytical and socio-historic readings grounded in Nineteenth century conceptions of womanhood provide background material for this thesis. Though useful and informative, however, these areas of study are not sufficient in themselves. The theory that shapes the arguments of this thesis is defined by Steven Cohan, who argues strongly that the demand for psychological coherence as a requisite of character obscures the imaginative power of character as textual construct, and who both refutes and develops character theory as it is argued by Baruch Hochman. Cohan's theory is also finally closer to that outlined by Thomas Docherty, who provides a complex reading of character as ultimately "unknowable".

- Description: In 2001, participatory research, incorporating various participatory rural appraisal techniques, was conducted in five, rural, primary schools in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. The participatory research was aimed at identifying and addressing schools' needs in terms of lifeskills education in a changing South Africa and educational environment. This whole process has been written up as a case study and further analysed in an attempt to describe the emerging role of the psychologist, working in participation with educators, in this kind of setting. Going beyond description, the researcher reflects upon the function and nature of the role of the psychologist within the developmental participatory process. In doing so, the article addresses the need for participatory research results to be further analysed in generating theory, particularly within Psychology. The article highlights some of the strengths of qualitative research, and the primacy of the personal in that endeavour.

In the first place it refers to the determination of production- and reproduction norms for the different main production areas in the greater Burgersdorp area, to promote production. In the second place it refers to the determination of the different management styles of sheep farmers in the greater Burgersdorp area. In the third place it refers to the calculation of gross margins for sheep farming in the greater Burgersdorp area, to establish the sustainable economic position. The survey area (the greater Burgersdorp area) includes the magisterial districts of Burgersdorp, Molteno, Steynsburg and Venterstad. The four magisterial districts were divided into two main production areas namely Stormberg Highveld and Burgersdorp Lowveld. Stormberg Highveld includes Molteno and the high-lying area (highveld) of Burgersdorp. Burgersdorp Lowveld comprises Steynsburg, Venterstad and the low-lying area (lowveld) of Burgersdorp. The management strategies of sheep farmers in the survey area were determined by means of a questionnaire and statistically analysed. The economic analyses of the sheep industry (wool and meat) were performed with the Geyer computer model. In this study it showed that the Dorper farmers obtained the highest gross margin per sheep. The lowest gross margin per sheep resulted from the Vleismerino farmers. Although the composition of the gross production value and the directly allocatable variable costs compare favourably, each main production area has unique management strategies for the different sheep breeds. The different management strategies can serve as the norm for extensive sheep farming, applicable to the specific main production area.

- Description: This interpretative case study takes place in the foundation phase of a previously parallel medium school in the Eastern Cape. Learners from all three major language groups of the province (English, Xhosa and Afrikaans) are enrolled at the school. The study examines the language attitudes of teachers, parents and young learners and records their language practices in the classroom, the wider school environment and at home. Research carried out through this case study found that all stakeholders perceive English as the language of access to improved education and lifestyle. All young learners displayed a positive attitude to multilingualism and were keen to be able to speak all three provincial languages. The attitudes of their parents and teachers however differed from the learners and each other. The teachers and the English speaking parents were primarily concerned with the maintenance of the standards of English. The Afrikaans and Xhosa speaking parents were committed to their children developing proficient English language skills even if this meant supporting the development of their primary language and culture at home. Furthermore it was discovered that little attention had been paid to developing a school language policy in accordance with the new Language in Education Policy of July 1997. This policy promotes an additive approach to bilingualism and seeks to ensure that meaningful access to learning is provided for all children. By suggesting steps that could be taken by this school to develop their own language policy, the study highlights the necessity of recognising and remedying the gaps between policy and practice in the issue of language rights, identity and education in general.

A comparative study of atmospheric dynamics in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) near Grahamstown (South Africa) and Adelaide (Australia)

- Description: The observations made near Grahamstown (33 .3°S, 26.5°E), South Africa and Adelaide (34.5°S, 138.5°E), Australia over the years 1987 to 1994 are used to study the dynamics of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (ML T) region with a focus on ∼ 90 km altitude. In particular this thesis deals with on the atmospheric mean flow and the solar diurnal and semi diurnal oscillations with a view to (i) deducing their patterns at the two sites, (ii) comparing the dynamic structures observed at the two sites with special emphases on longitudinal variations, and (iii) putting these observations in a global context by comparing with other ground-based observations, satellite observations and numerical simulations. The main findings are summarised below. The mean flow and the tides at Grahamstown and Adelaide are characteristically variable at planetary time scales. Wavelet spectral and multiresolution analyses reveal that the dominant planetary oscillation is the quasi-16-day oscillation. However, no apparent correlation in the 16-day waves of the mean flow, the diurnal tide and the semidiurnal tide was found. The short-term fluctuations were also investigated using complex demodulation and bispectral techniques and it was found that some of the observed variations in tides could be due to non-linear wave-wave interactions. The long-term trends of the mean flow and tides show patterns that are in broad agreement with theory, results from elsewhere (ground-based and satellite) and the results of the Global-Scale Wave Model and various models by Portnyagin and others. In general the mean flow, the amplitudes and phases of both tides were found to exhibit seasonal and interannual variations which are thought to be related to various factors including (i) changes in the atmospheric mean environment, (ii) thermotidal forcing (iii) gravity wave effects, (iv) planetary scale influence, (v) long-term (e.g. quasi-biennial oscillation) modulation, and (vi) solar activity. There are significant longitudinal differences in the dynamic structure between Grahamstown and Adelaide. More especially, Grahamstown tends to have stronger mean flow and tidal activity than Adelaide. For tides, these differences are thought to be partly due to nonmigrating tidal modes but, in general, migrating modes were found to be dominant.

- Description: The observations made near Grahamstown (33 .3°S, 26.5°E), South Africa and Adelaide (34.5°S, 138.5°E), Australia over the years 1987 to 1994 are used to study the dynamics of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (ML T) region with a focus on ∼ 90 km altitude. In particular this thesis deals with on the atmospheric mean flow and the solar diurnal and semi diurnal oscillations with a view to (i) deducing their patterns at the two sites, (ii) comparing the dynamic structures observed at the two sites with special emphases on longitudinal variations, and (iii) putting these observations in a global context by comparing with other ground-based observations, satellite observations and numerical simulations. The main findings are summarised below. The mean flow and the tides at Grahamstown and Adelaide are characteristically variable at planetary time scales. Wavelet spectral and multiresolution analyses reveal that the dominant planetary oscillation is the quasi-16-day oscillation. However, no apparent correlation in the 16-day waves of the mean flow, the diurnal tide and the semidiurnal tide was found. The short-term fluctuations were also investigated using complex demodulation and bispectral techniques and it was found that some of the observed variations in tides could be due to non-linear wave-wave interactions. The long-term trends of the mean flow and tides show patterns that are in broad agreement with theory, results from elsewhere (ground-based and satellite) and the results of the Global-Scale Wave Model and various models by Portnyagin and others. In general the mean flow, the amplitudes and phases of both tides were found to exhibit seasonal and interannual variations which are thought to be related to various factors including (i) changes in the atmospheric mean environment, (ii) thermotidal forcing (iii) gravity wave effects, (iv) planetary scale influence, (v) long-term (e.g. quasi-biennial oscillation) modulation, and (vi) solar activity. There are significant longitudinal differences in the dynamic structure between Grahamstown and Adelaide. More especially, Grahamstown tends to have stronger mean flow and tidal activity than Adelaide. For tides, these differences are thought to be partly due to nonmigrating tidal modes but, in general, migrating modes were found to be dominant.

The researcher first did a literature study to place social responsibility in perspective. The main purpose of the literature study was to identify and suggest how companies select the targets for said responsible involvement. An empirical investigation was conducted, focusing on Standard Bank and ABSA Bank. The demarcation of the study was restricted to these organisations as the assumption was made that their social responsibility practices are representative of the social responsibility practices of the financial services industry. The empirical study showed that the organisations under review did not have specific criteria that guide their selection of targets for social responsibility involvement. This highlighted an area of improvement on the social responsibility practices. The results of the literature study and the empirical investigation indicated that to be proactive in the field of social responsibility, criteria for selecting targets should be set and social responsibility practices should be linked to the corporate objectives and should form part of the strategic planning process. An affirmative approach to social responsibility will ensure that the two financial institutions be perceived as socially responsible.

- Description: The Information Technology (IT) industry has grown and has become an integral part in the world of business today. The importance of information, and IT in particular, will in fact only increase with time (von Solms, 1999). For a large group of organizations computer systems form the basis of their day-to-day functioning (Halliday, Badendorst & von Solms, 1996). These systems evolve at an incredible pace and this brings about a greater need for securing them, as well as the organizational information processed, transmitted and stored. This technological evolution brings about new risks for an organization’s systems and information (Halliday et. al., 1996). If IT fails, it means that the business could fail as well, creating a need for more rigorous IT management (International Business Machines Corporation, 2000). For this reason, executive management must be made aware of the potential consequences that a disaster could have on the organisation (Hawkins,Yen & Chou, 2000). A disaster could be any event that would cause a disruption in the normal day-to-day functioning of an organization. Such an event could range from a natural disaster, like a fire, an earthquake or a flood, to something more trivial, like a virus or system malfunction (Hawkins et. al., 2000). During the 1980’s a discipline known as Disaster Recovery Planning (DRP) emerged to protect an organization’s data centre, which was central to the organisation’s IT based structure, from the effects of disasters. This solution, however, focussed only on the protection of the data centre. During the early 1990’s the focus shifted towards distributed computing and client/server technology. Data centre protection and recovery were no longer enough to ensure survival. Organizations needed to ensure the continuation of their mission critical processes to support their continued goal of operations (IBM Global Services, 1999). Organizations now had to ensure that their mission critical functions could continue while the data centre was recovering from a disaster. A different approach was required. It is for this reason that Business Continuity Planning (BCP) was accepted as a formal discipline (IBM Global Services, 1999). To ensure that business continues as usual, an organization must have a plan in place that will help them ensure both the continuation and recovery of critical business processes and the recovery of the data centre, should a disaster strike (Moore, 1995). Wilson (2000) defines a business continuity plan as “a set of procedures developed for the entire enterprise, outlining the actions to be taken by the IT organization, executive staff, and the various business units in order to quickly resume operations in the event of a service interruption or an outage”. With markets being highly competitive as they are, an organization needs a detailed listing of steps to follow to ensure minimal loss due to downtime. This is very important for maintaining its competitive advantage and public stature (Wilson, 2000). The fact that the company’s reputation is at stake requires executive management to take continuity planning very serious (IBM Global Services, 1999). Ensuring continuity of business processes and recovering the IT services of an organization is not the sole responsibility of the IT department. Therefore management should be aware that they could be held liable for any consequences resulting from a disaster (Kearvell-White, 1996). Biological information collected on biannual research cruises from September 1986 to April 1999 on the Agulhas Bank as well as information from commercial vessels operating in the inshore environment collected between April 1988 and July 1989 and again between June 1999 and May 2000 were analysed. Size ranges of juveniles, subadults and adults were calculated and used to determine seasonal distribution and abundance patterns. Based on Gonadosomatic Indices (GSI) and percentages of mature squid in each month, two peak reproductive seasons in summer and winter were identified although mature squid were present all year round. Seasonal peaks in sex ratio were also apparent with males outnumbering females by up to 4:1 in the peak-breeding season. The size at which squid matured, demonstrated both spatial and temporal patterns. Squid caught in spring matured at a smaller size than squid caught in autumn and at successively smaller sizes from west to east across the Agulhas Bank. Size at maturity was highly variable especially in males where “sneaker males” were evident in both seasons. Length-to-weight linear regression revealed significant differences between maturity stages and between sexes. Females demonstrated steeper length-to-weight regression slopes than males in the peak-breeding seasons. Aspects of squid biology pertinent to fishery management were highlighted as well as potential areas where research should be directed in order to develop future stock assessment models.

- Description: American minister John Graham Lake (1870-1935) was a pivotal participant in an era of profound religious and political transition. Surprisingly, Lake's often provocative life had previously been largely neglected as a field of academic inquiry. In the U.S. Lake associated with key Holiness, Wesleyan and Apostolic Faith charismatics like John Alexander Dowie of the Zion City, Illinois Utopia, Charles Parham of the Topeka Revival and William Seymour of the Azusa Street Revival. Lake served as an important intermediary between Parham's often reactionary, white orientation that was unreceptive to an enthusiastic black liturgy and Seymour's expansive African-American egalitarianism expressed through exuberant spirit manifestations. Lake's South African ministry was shaped by his middle class white business background, Azusa Street message and American perspectives. He brought together the faith healing movement inspired by Dutch Reformed minister Andrew Murray, P. Ie Roux's black and white Zion charismatic adherents affiliated with Dowie and the new U.S. Pentecostalism of Parham and Seymour. Lake's African-American influenced Pentecostalism was compatible with indigenous African worship. His emphasis on the spiritual needs of the disempowered found a receptive audience in talented black evangelists Elias Letwaba and Edward Lion. Even though acquainted with Mohandas Gandhi, Lake did not undertake a South African social gospel-type civil protest against societal injustice. In fact, Lake's participation with Afrikaner politicians like Louis Botha in fashioning a segregationist land use law was most troubling. Lake was ambivalent about racial integration. His belief in an egalitarian status for all Christians, his Populist/Progressive ethics and his enthusiastic promotion of women's rights were complicated by his advocacy, or at least tolerance, of some disparate racial treatment in his Apostolic Faith Mission and South African society at large. Lake's paternalism and notion of Westem cultural superiority conflicted with his love of all persons. Lake's otherworldly prioritization of individual spiritualism over a socioeconomic agenda usually stymied activism. His uncharacteristic use of nonviolent protest to protect faith healing formed a remarkable contrast with his reluctance to actively campaign against unequal racial treatment in Africa and America. Historiographical perspectives on Lake range from the saintly pioneer charismatic missionary to the Elmer Gantry type charlatan acting only for personal benefit. Lake was a unique personality with his flamboyant rhetoric, strong convictions and feelings of personal worth. His distinctive Jesus as healing and suffering God theology evidenced both consistency with precedent as well as creative anticipation. Shortcomings resulting from his preference to address social concerns on an individual spiritual rather than societal level, his liberties with truth and his bad business judgments resulting in litigation. Lake served as an important intermediary between Parham's often reactionary, white orientation that was unreceptive to an enthusiastic black liturgy and Seymour's expansive African-American egalitarianism expressed through exuberant spirit manifestations. Lake's South African ministry was shaped by his middle class white business background, Azusa Street message and American perspectives. He brought together the faith healing movement inspired by Dutch Reformed minister Andrew Murray, P. Ie Roux's black and white Zion charismatic adherents affiliated with Dowie and the new U.S. Pentecostalism of Parham and Seymour. Lake's African-American influenced Pentecostalism was compatible with indigenous African worship. His emphasis on the spiritual needs of the disempowered found a receptive audience in talented black evangelists Elias Letwaba and Edward Lion. Even though acquainted with Mohandas Gandhi, Lake did not undertake a South African social gospel-type civil protest against societal injustice. In fact, Lake's participation with Afrikaner politicians like Louis Botha in fashioning a segregationist land use law was most troubling. Lake was ambivalent about racial integration. His belief in an egalitarian status for all Christians, his Populist/Progressive ethics and his enthusiastic promotion of women's rights were complicated by his advocacy, or at least tolerance, of some disparate racial treatment in his Apostolic Faith Mission and South African society at large. Lake's paternalism and notion of Westem cultural superiority conflicted with his love of all persons. Lake's otherworldly prioritization of individual spiritualism over a socioeconomic agenda usually stymied activism. His uncharacteristic use of nonviolent protest to protect faith healing formed a remarkable contrast with his reluctance to actively campaign against unequal racial treatment in Africa and America. Historiographical perspectives on Lake range from the saintly pioneer charismatic missionary to the Elmer Gantry type charlatan acting only for personal benefit. Lake was a unique personality with his flamboyant rhetoric, strong convictions and feelings of personal worth. His distinctive Jesus as healing and suffering God theology evidenced both consistency with precedent as well as creative anticipation. Shortcomings resulting from his preference to address social concerns on an individual spiritual rather than societal level, his liberties with truth and his bad business judgments resulting in litigation. Levinas’ theory, which identifies the encounter with the Other as necessary to precipitate an intervention of grace, is again useful in explaining how Coetzee has postulated the unassimilable otherness of animals as primary to human ethical development. This chapter also concludes that Disgrace represents a high point in the recovery of both grace and agency in Coetzee’s oeuvre.The concluding chapter suggests that the accumulation of meanings to the term ‘grace’enables its definition as a semi-religious abstraction. Coetzee suggests that belief in its existence has the power to affect interactions on the physical plane, especially those between the self and the Other.

However, a number of concerns prevalent in schools - particularly, increasing student underperformance, worsening disciplinary problems, increasing teenage pregnancy and HIV/AIDS pandemic, teacher qualification, decreasing teacher motivation, lack of training including induction for principals, inadequate support from the top (lack of a support system) and insufficient parental involvement in school matters – make the task of running schools extremely challenging and increasingly complex. How do principals experience these challenges and deal with the complex situations? How do they perceive their role, particularly in light of national aspirations and leadership theory? These are questions I think need to be explored. My research goal was to gain an understanding of Windhoek senior secondary school principals’ perceptions and experiences of their leadership role. My focus was on three purposively selected Windhoek senior secondary school principals representative of both the Namibian ethno-cultural diversity and gender. Data was collected through interviews. I found that the situations in which the principals found themselves during the pre- and post independent periods mainly determined their leadership style and behaviour, however, that did not deter their vision for the transformation of the society, as the ultimate objective and essence of their leadership. The appropriate practicing of their leadership role was being hampered by lack of induction and training, lack of a support system and insufficient parental involvement.

- Description: The fallibility of human judgment in the making of decisions requires the use of tests to enhance decision-making processes. Although testing is surrounded with issues of bias and fairness, it remains the best means of facilitating decisions over more subjective alternatives. As a country in transition, all facets of South African society are being transformed. The changes taking place within the tertiary education system to redress the legacy of Apartheid, coincide with an international trend of transforming higher education. One important area that is being transformed relates to university entrance requirements and admissions procedures. In South Africa, these were traditionally based on matriculation performance, which has been found to be a more variable predictor of academic success for historically disadvantaged students. Alternative or revised admissions procedures have been implemented at universities throughout the country, in conjunction with academic development programmes. However, it is argued in this dissertation that a paradigm shift is necessary to conceptualise admissions and placement assessment in a developmentally oriented way. Furthermore, it is motivated that it is important to keep abreast of advances in theory, such as item response theory (IRT) and technology, such as computerized adaptive testing (CAT), in test development to enhance the effectiveness of selecting and placing learners in tertiary programmes. This study focuses on investigating the use of the Accuplacer Computerized Placement Tests (CPTs), an adaptive test battery that was developed in the USA, to facilitate unbiased and fair admissions, placement and development decisions in the transforming South African context. The battery has been implemented at a university in the Eastern Cape and its usefulness was investigated for 193 participants, divided into two groups of degree programmes, depending on whether or not admission to the degree required mathematics as a matriculation subject. Mathematics based degree programme learners (n = 125) wrote three and non-mathematics based degree programme learners (n = 68) wrote two tests of the Accuplacer test battery. Correlations were computed between the Accuplacer scores and matriculation performance, and between the Accuplacer scores, matriculation performance and academic results. All yielded significant positive relationships excepting for the one subtest of the Accuplacer with academic performance for the non-mathematics based degree group. Multiple correlations for both groups indicated that the Accuplacer scores and matriculation results contribute unique information about academic performance. Cluster analysis for both groups yielded three underlying patterns of performance in the data sets. An attempt was made to validate the cluster groups internally through a MANOVA and single-factor ANOVAs. It was found that Accuplacer subtests and matriculation results do discriminate to an extent among clusters of learners in both groups of degree programmes investigated. Clusters were described in terms of demographic information and it was determined that the factors of culture and home language and how they relate to cluster group membership need further investigation. The main suggestion flowing from these findings is that an attempt be made to confirm the results with a larger sample size and for different cultural and language groups.

This is followed by an explanation of the survey questionnaire used for the accumulation of data needed for the analysis. The research findings of the empirical survey were statistically analysed and reported. Finally, a number of conclusions are presented that were arrived at during the study, followed by specific recommendations. No taxonomic revision of the genus, or key to the species of Bergeranthus, has been undertaken since its description by Schwantes in 1926. The species concepts are mostly based on single, or at best severaL cultivated plants and are notoriously narrow and in some cases incorrect. Louisa Bolus described five of the ten currently recognized species of Bergeranthus (as well as B. cookii, B.firmus, B. glenensis, B.jamesii, and B. longisepalus) from cultivated plants that she had never seen in the wild. This narrow species concept, compounded by morphological change that occurs in response to environmental factors, presents an assemblage of ill-defmed and poorly known taxa that have been prioritised for taxonomic attention by various authors. Furthermore, the generic delimitation of Bergeranthus with the closely related genera Rhombophyllum and Hereroa is unclear and requires attention before generic revisions are attempted for all three genera. The taxonomic revision presented here is based on a study of 210 wild populations of Bergeranthus as well as cultivated representatives of these and 135 herbarium specimens. A phenetic analysis based on 36 vegetative characters was initially used to delimit taxa. Thereafter sixty-three macro- and micro-morphological characters were critically assessed for the purposes of species delimitation, amendment of existing species descriptions and the description of two new species. Macromorphological characters examined included rootstock, leaf(36), inflorescence, floral (nine), fruit (nine), seed germination and seedling characters. Micro-morphological characters examined included leaf anatomy, leaf epidermal wax layer, anther shape and point of adherence, pollen and seed characters. This revision reduces two species into synonymy and two new species, B. albomarginatus and B. nanus, are described. Existing species descriptions are improved and all species are illustrated. A key to species is provided. The reproductive biology, ecology, phytogeography and distribution data of the genus are discussed towards an improved understanding of the genus. The generic delimitation of Bergeranthus and its closest relatives, Rhombophyllum and Hereroa, are discussed based on an examination of 25 morphological characters and two phenological characters and a provisional key to genera is provided. A phylogenetic analysis of all 10 species of Bergeranthus, both species of Rhombophyllum and a single species of Hereroa (H. granulata) was undertaken to support species and generic delimitation.

A phenetic analysis based on 36 vegetative characters was initially used to delimit taxa. Thereafter sixty-three macro- and micro-morphological characters were critically assessed for the purposes of species delimitation, amendment of existing species descriptions and the description of two new species. Macromorphological characters examined included rootstock, leaf(36), inflorescence, floral (nine), fruit (nine), seed germination and seedling characters. Micro-morphological characters examined included leaf anatomy, leaf epidermal wax layer, anther shape and point of adherence, pollen and seed characters. This revision reduces two species into synonymy and two new species, B. albomarginatus and B. nanus, are described. Existing species descriptions are improved and all species are illustrated. A key to species is provided. The reproductive biology, ecology, phytogeography and distribution data of the genus are discussed towards an improved understanding of the genus. The generic delimitation of Bergeranthus and its closest relatives, Rhombophyllum and Hereroa, are discussed based on an examination of 25 morphological characters and two phenological characters and a provisional key to genera is provided. A phylogenetic analysis of all 10 species of Bergeranthus, both species of Rhombophyllum and a single species of Hereroa (H. granulata) was undertaken to support species and generic delimitation.

Accelerated carbon dioxide deliming of cattle hides and sheepskins

- Description: To avoid environmental pressure from water authorities, specifically regarding nitrogen and sulfate limits in tannery wastewater, modifications to existing deliming processes have been made. Conventional ammonium salt deliming methods contribute to Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen values in the region of 0.5 – 1.0g/L (33-67% of total TKN). Sulfate levels are increased with the use of organic deliming and ammonium sulfate deliming to the extent of 0.9g/L (27% of total sulfate). To understand the dynamics and kinetics of carbon dioxide equilibrium, the movement of carbon dioxide into deliming water, through carbonic acid, bicarbonate and ultimately into carbonates at liming or early deliming pH was studied. It was shown in this study that effective lime removal, at optimum conditions, resulted in fully delimed pelts at highly comparable quality and times compared to conventional ammonium salt deliming
