Since 1990 the RU Environmental Learning Research Collective (ELRC), have been engaged in theory building and methodology development to advance the field of environment and sustainability education research and praxis. Drawing on a range of social theories, we have challenged ‘taken for granted’ research paradigms such as positivism, and have introduced critical theories, reflexive research and social process, as well as social learning methodologies. We have also advanced expansive learning, transformative agency, decolonial praxis, socio-material, phenomenographic, and arts-based methodologies, thereby advancing the field of environmental education research in the global South. The collections are necessarily intersecting, and any one study may be advancing more than one of the knowledge commons theory building and methodology development arenas contained in the sub-collections.
