Description: Thirteen species of the genus Hetereleotris are recognized from the Indian Ocean. Two of the species are described as new. H. poecila (Fowler) is recorded for the first time from the Indian Ocean, and H. vulgaris (Klunzinger) is recorded from the Mediterranean. Specimens of H. zonata from India and Pakistan were found to differ in several features from specimens from South Africa. A key is given to the species from the western Indian Ocean. Diagnoses and a primary synonymy are given for each of the 11 previously described species.
