- Description: This study is concerned with the association characteristics of solutions of alcohols in some non-polar solvents. The permittivities at 2 MHz and 25°C for solutions of the straight chain octanols in cyclohexane, carbon tetrachloride and benzene have been examined over the entire solute concentration range, with particular attention -1 being paid to the range below 0.1 molℓ⁻¹ By applying the Kirkwood- Fröhlich equation to these data, the apparent dipole moments of the alcohols as a function of concentration have been evaluated. These concentration dependencies have been correlated with infrared absorption results on the same systems to provide information on the sizes and configurations of the proposed hydrogen bonded multimers. It is concluded that, at very low solute concentrations, the alcohol molecules exist as monomers; but with increasing concentration, two types of hydrogen bonded multimers are formed, the first (at low concentrations) being of high dipole moment and the second (at higher concentrations) being of low dipole moment. At high concentrations, the molecules associate to form a three-dimensional network. Attempts have been made to determine equilibrium parameters for molecular models which are consistent with the qualitative understanding of the association behaviour. These parameters were obtained by applying least-squares, curve-fitting techniques to the low concentration permittivity data. A similar investigation has been conducted on solutions of 2,3,4-trimethyl-3-pentanol in the same solvents. The steric hindrance around the hydroxyl group of this alcohol modifies the association behaviour so that a three-dimensional network does not form at high solute concentrations. Proton magnetic resonance chemical shifts for the hydroxyl proton of this alcohol in carbon tetrachloride solutions have been measured. Attempts have also been made to determine equilibrium parameters which describe formation of the hydrogen bonded multimers. To extend this study to include solutes other than octanols, similar experiments have been conducted on solutions of t-butanol in hexadecane, a system which has recently been investigated by other workers using different experimental techniques. The association behaviour of this system is qualitatively similar to that of the straight-chain octanols. The combination of permittivity and infrared measurements, although proving extremely powerful in interpreting the association characteristics of dilute alcohol solutions, is less adequate at high solute concentrations. Attention was therefore directed towards dielectric relaxation and viscosity studies to investigate concentrated solutions. The relaxation times at 20°C of the low frequency dispersion have been measured for solutions of 1-propanol, 1-butanol, 1-hexanol, 1-octanol and 1-decanol in cyclohexane using time domain reflectometry techniques. Similar measurements have also been made on solutions of 1-butanol and 1-octanol in carbon tetrachloride and in benzene. The concentration dependence of the viscosities of certain of these systems has also been examined in an independent study. The ratio of the dielectric relaxation time to the viscosity, the "reduced relaxation time", is qualitatively similar for each system studied. This similarity leads to an explanation of the molecular process responsible for the low frequency dispersion in terms of the proximity of the hydroxyl groups in concentrated alcohol solutions and the fraction of the groups which are not involved in hydrogen bonding.

A holy people: a study in the ecclesiology of Andrew Murray

- Description: The thesis seeks to show Andrew Murray's growing understanding of what it meant to be the elect of God in contrast to other prevailing notions. In his confrontation with the Trekker communities, the majority of whom were rigid Calvinists, stressing a divine election based on the notions of biological and cultural identity, Murray found little of the holy behaviour which ought to characterize the people of God. The elect should be seen to be the elect by their fruits. Instead there was divisiveness, discrimination, party spirit and other forms of ungodliness. Faced with the immensity of the task in identifying the true Church and building God's people up in holiness, Murray began to sense the necessity of another 'dimension' within the Church's regular means of grace of preaching, the sacraments, and discipline. The revival of 1860, focussed Murray's attention in a new and vital way on the work of the Holy Spirit in breathing new life into the Church and in empowering believers to live lives pleasing to God. The 'indiscriminate' effects of the Holy Spirit's work convinced Murray that the Gospel and thus the Church was not the possession of the white colonist, Dutch or English, but that the black and brown man had an equal claim on the Gospel and as much right to become a member of Christ's Church. Murray's understanding of the Christian life as continual abiding in Christ by the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit meant that the believer came to have the mind of Christ and to partake of His holiness. This holiness evidenced itself in the believer having Christ's concern for the lost. Mission, therefore, became this supreme end of the Church. The struggle with the forces of liberalism raised the new issue that unbelievers could no longer be simply 'heathen blacks' or English but most of all Dutch. The support of the civil courts of those disciplined by the Church brought the whole problem of ecclesiology to the fore and led Murray to the conclusion of the necessary separation of the Church from the State. Murray's discovery that in various ages, nations and Church traditions there were those with the same passionate desire for God' s holiness, led him into an increasing awareness of the catholicity of the Church. True holiness demanded the love and unity of all God's children. Murray's ecclesiology was a biblically-based one at a time when communities were beginning to be formed by other than biblical notions and principles and by a people who were trying to pack more into the notion of a people of God than Scripture gave warrant for. The emphasis for which Murray stood made for an ecclesiology that simply could not be confined.

- Description: Serious efforts must be made to combat the high accident rate on the roads in the Republic of South Africa. The same spirit which exists in the field of medicine when there are evidences that an epidemic is beginning to take its toll, must come into being amongst those who are concerned with traffic and its problems. The public itself needs to become more aware of road safety. Many associations and institutions have been created to assist with the inculcation of the road safety ideal. The National Road Safety Council, which creates opportunities for investigation into aspects of road safety must continue to expand its sphere of influence. The research project contained on the following pages represents an attempt to contribute to the human factor in traffic safety, particularly by making a closer study of the driver of the motor vehicle. The writer is concerned with the carnage that is caused by road accidents. His previous study of personality and particularly of the projective techniques of assessment has prompted a consideration of the problem.

- Description: The world is faced with a population explosion, and cities are becoming ever larger. The world population will grow from its present 3500 million to more than 7 000 million by the year 2 000. The majority of cities are thus faced with the problem of housing vast numbers of people living in single family dwellings forming low density urban sprawl. Conditions are no different in South Africa where the present white population of about four million is expected to grow to between six and seven million by the year 2000. The present housing requirement (1970-75) for Whites, based on low and high population projections, is 32 732 and 40 150 houses respectively. From 1995-2000 the figures will have risen to 42 742 and 65 580 respectively. At that rate sprawl here will reach alarming proportions unless it can be curtailed by higher density housing. As the population trend does not seem likely to be reversed the problem lies in how to provide housing for an escalating population but at the same time to reduce urban sprawl and provide satisfactory living conditions.

Art is life and nature and it lives in the realms of imagination, magic and mystery. Its language is the language of myth, and its aim is Truth. Art is action and reaction and is reached in silence by the artist alone and individually - its climate is solitude and its paths are as devious and labyrinthine as any the soul can follow in search of self-knowledge and the divine. Doctrines on the universality of sin
- Authors: Van Rensburg, Lee
- Date: 1975
- Subjects: Sin , Good and evil , Sin -- Biblical teaching
- Language: English
- Type: Thesis , Bachelor , BDiv
- Identifier: vital:1288 , http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1014577
- Description: [From chapter 1]. The doctrines on the universality of sin are attempts to give theological explanations for the empirical and historical evidence of the universality of sin. They are attempts to explain why it is that each and every person that enters this world has a bias towards sin ; why such a highly organized, intricate and majestically complex being like man, the crowning glory of the created realm in every case has this weakness we call sin ; why it is that after 6,000 years of the history of mankind the present generation is as plagued with this malfunction as the first; why it is that sooner or later all of us commit sin in one form or another. Indirectly these doctrines also seek to protect God's uniqueness and oneness against the dualism of evil and good and following from this second reason are attempts to explain the presence of sin within the good creation of God. However, these attempts are fraught with difficulties and invariably each explanation that is offered raises other pertinent issues that the Christian thinker does not wish to accept as side effects to his answer. This has resulted in scholars over the ages attempting to modify or reinterpret previous doctrines in order to allow for these issues to be taken into account. There has, therefore, as we shall discover, been much diversity and debate as to the form and contents of these doctrines.

- Description: The study of local history in South Africa is still in its infancy and has not been accorded the same recognition as elsewhere. There is no convenient manual to guide the would-be local historian of the Cape. There are few models that provide an insight into the main problems encountered by the local historian of a Cape community. In such local histories as exist, attention has been focussed predominantly on the foundation and physical growth of towns, the naming of streets, the establishment of schools and hospitals. Many of these accounts were written for publicity purposes or to commemorate the founding of towns. Although there is no history of the Dutch Reformed Church in Graaff-Reinet, the history of local congregations of the Dutch Reformed Church has generally been well covered in the form of Gedenkboeke and other studies. These frequently have a particular relevance as many towns such as Burgersdorp and Colesberg were founded as a result of the initiative of the church. Preface.
