- Description: This paper reports the successful synthesis of the low symmetry phthalocyanines: metal-free 2,3-bis[2′-(2′′-hydroxyethoxy)ethoxy]-9,10,16,17,23,24-hexa-nn-butoxyphthalocyanine 1H22 and its zinc complex 1Zn along with their nonlinear optical (NLO) behavior in solution and in thin films. 1H NMR investigations evidenced of higher dissymmetry of electronic density in 1H22 in comparison with 1Zn. This dissymmetry is responsible for unusually higher values of Im[χ(3)χ(3)]/αα, βeffβeff, and γγ for 1H22in contrast to 1Zn, where the notable effect of heavy-metal enhancement of ISC was expected. Both compounds showed Im[χ(3)χ(3)]/αα values of the order of 10−11−11 in chloroform which are higher in comparison to the symmetrical octabutoxyphthalocyanine H2[(BuO)8Pc]. NLO properties of 1H22 were improved via its incorporation into polycarbonate polymeric matrix together with CdSe@CdS-TOPO quantum dots. In such composite the value of Im[χ(3)χ(3)]/αα was almost three times higher in comparison with 1H22 solution in chloroform. The obtained composites are expected to be perspective components of optical materials, capable of protection against strong light irradiation

- Description: Photolysis of aqueous solutions of 4-chlorophenol (4-Cp) in the presence of solid neodymium diphthalocyanine ([Pc(−2)NdPc(−2)]−) and oxygen using visible and ultraviolet (UV) radiation resulted in the formation of a number of products. For photolysis in the visible region, phenol, benzoquinone, hydroquinone were observed as intermediates and 4-chlorocatechol (4-CC) as the main product; intermediates similar to those observed for visible photolysis were obtained. Langmuir–Hinshelwood kinetic model was used for treatment of photochemical data.

- Description: This work reports on synthesis and characterizations of Ga(III) and In(III) complexes, formed by 2,3-bis[2′′-(2′′′′-hydroxyethoxy)ethoxy]-9,10,16,17,23,24-hexa-nn-butoxy phthalocyanine (1H2) coordinating acetatoindium(III) (1InOAc) and hydroxogallium(III) (1GaOH) Photophysical properties of hydroxogallium(III) phthalocyaninate 1GaOH and acetatoindium(III) phthalocyaninate 1InOAc were studied by UV-vis, fluorescence spectroscopy and time-resolved methods. The nonlinear absorption of the complexes was studied using the Z-scan technique at 532 nm and 10 ns pulse in DMSO and in thin films formed by composite with poly(bisphenol A carbonate) — PBC. The magnitude of absorption coefficients and other nonlinear optical parameters estimated in this work showed that complex 1InOAc exhibited the strongest nonlinear optical behavior in comparison with 1GaOH in solution and a reverse tendency when embedded in PBC thin films. DFT calculations were used to rationalize these results.

- Description: An Ag/Pc/p-Si Schottky barrier (SB) diode was fabricated. The current-voltage (I-V), capacitance-voltage (C-V) and conductance-voltage (G-V) measurements were carried out to determine the characteristic parameters such as barrier height, ideality factor and series resistance of the SB diode. The non-linear behavior of ln (I) vs. ln (V) and ln (I/V) vs. V1/2 plots indicated that the thermoionic emission theory can be applied to evaluate junction parameters for the investigated SB diode rather than space-charge limited conduction (SCLC) mechanism and bulk-limited Poole–Frenkel emission. The bulk doping concentration NB and fixed oxide charges Nf was determined from the measured high frequency C-V curve and was found to be 9.5 × 1014 cm-3 and 2.3 × 1013 cm-2, respectively. The values of barrier height obtained from Norde's function were compared with those from the forward bias current-voltage characteristic, and it was seen that there was a good agreement between barrier heights from both methods.

- Description: Indium(III) chloride 1,8(11),15(18),22(25)-tetra-(3-carboxyphenoxy) phthalocyanine (1) and indium(III) chloride 2,9(10),16(17),23(24)-tetra–(3-carboxyphenoxy) phthalocyanine (2) were covalently linked to glutathione capped silver nanoparticles (AgNPs–GSH) and silver selenide/zinc sulfide (Ag2Se/ZnS–GSH) quantum dots via amide bond formation. The photophysical and nonlinear optical behaviour of the metallophthalocyanines and their conjugates with nanoparticles were investigated using the open aperture Z–scan technique. Complex 2 showed enhanced photophysical properties compared to 1. The conjugates revealed improved triplet state quantum yields (except for 1-AgNPs-GSH which afforded lower triplet state quantum yields in comparison to 1) and nonlinear optical activities in comparison to the Pc complexes. The synthesized complexes, nanoparticles and their conjugates could be potential nonlinear optical materials due to their good nonlinear optical activities.

- Description: The synthesis of ball-type dinuclear Zn(II) phthalocyanine containing four 4,4′-(9H-fluorene-9,9-diyl)diphenol substituents at the non-peripheral position is presented. The structure of the synthesized compound was characterized using elemental analyzes, and UV-vis, FT-IR, 1H NMR and mass spectroscopies. The ΦF value was 0.16 and ΦT value was 0.72. The complex showed reasonably long triplet lifetimes with τT 7210 μs in DMSO. The frequency and temperature dependence of the dielectric properties of ZnPc were also investigated in the frequency range of 40–105 Hz and in the temperature range of 300–440 °K. It has been observed that both dielectric constant ε′ and dielectric loss ε″ decrease with the rise in frequency as they increase with the rise in temperature. The decrease in ε′ with increasing frequency is attributed to the fact that as the frequency increases, the polarizability contribution from orientation sources decreases and finally disappears.

- Description: The development of poly[allylSB-co-EGDMA] beads containing a tetradentate ligand was achieved via suspension polymerization. The catalyst poly[allylSB-co-EGDMA]-VO was synthesized by reacting VIVOSO4 with poly[allylSB-co-EGDMA]. XPS and EPR were used to confirm the presence of vanadium (V4+) on the beads. The synthesized catalyst (poly[allylSB-co-EGDMA]-VO) was found to have a BET surface area of 22 m2 g−1 and porosity of 135 Å, with the atomic force microscopy (AFM) showing more insight on the porous nature of the beads. Oxidation of thiophene (TH), benzothiophene (BT), dibenzothiophene (DBT) and 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT) was carried out using tert-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BuOOH) as oxidant. An overall conversion of 60%, 82%, 98% and 87% was achieved for thiophene (TH), benzothiophene (BT), dibenzothiophene (DBT) and 4,6 dimethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT) respectively at higher (t-BuOOH) to substrate ratio and at a temperature of 40 °C. The efficient oxidation of the various organosulfur compounds presents potential for the possible application of this catalyst in oxidative desulfurization (ODS) of crude oil. , Original publication is available at http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.apcata.2013.05.004

- Description: This manuscript reports on syntheses of new multi-decker phthalocyanines, namely: bis-{2,3,9,10,16,10,16,17,23,24-octa(4-tertbutylphenoxy) phthalocyaninato} cerium(III) (2), tris-{2,3,9,10,16,10,16,17,23,24-octa(4-tertbutylphenoxy) phthalocyaninato} dicerium(III) (4) and bis-{2,3,9,10,16,10,16,17,23,24-octa(4-tertbutylphenoxy) phthalocyaninato} gadolinium(III) (5). Complex 4 which is a tris phthalocyanine showed better nonlinear optical behavior in solution than 2 which is a bis phthalocyanine, both containing the same central metal, Ce. All the three molecules possess good optical limiting properties judged by the limiting threshold values which ranged from 0.04 to 0.09 J cm−2 with complex 5 embedded in thin films, showing the lowest value of 0.04 J cm−2. Furthermore, nonlinear optical processes responsible for reverse saturable absorption data are investigated.

- Description: The potential utility of electrospun polystyrene (PS) nanofibers embedded with 2,6-diiodo-8-phenyl-1,7-dimethyl-3,5-di-2-thienylvinyleneBODIPY for the photocatalytic degradation of azo dyes is investigated. A comparison of the singlet oxygen quantum yield of the ππ-extended BODIPY dye in solution and in the PS nanofibers demonstrates that its photosensitizer properties are retained when it is embedded in the solid phase. The photocatalytic degradation properties of the PS nanofibers for Methyl Orange and Orange G were determined by using a Thorlabs 625 nm light emitting diode. The rate of photodegradation increases with the Orange G and Methyl Orange concentration and follows pseudo-first order kinetics at pH 6.7.

- Description: Binuclear ZnPc complexes covalently bridged by catechol units have been synthesized and their absorption and photochemical properties examined. The complexes studied are 1,2-bis-2',9',16',23'-triphenoxyphthalocyaninatozinc benzene (6a), 1,2-bis-2'-9',16',23'-tri-4-carboxyphe-noxyphthalocyaninatozinc benzene (6b), 1,2-bis-2',9',16',23'-tri-4-nitrophenoxyphthalocyaninato- zinc benzene (6c) and 1,2-bis-2'-9',16',23'-tri-4-tert-butylphenoxyphthalocyaninatozinc benzene (6d). Larger intramolecular coupling was observed for 6b and 6c, containing the carboxyphenoxy and nitrophenoxy substituents, respectively, than for 6a and 6d. A single Q band peak was observed for the fluorescence spectra of 6b and 6c, whereas, 6a and 6d showed a split Q band. The absence of the high energy fluorescence peaks corresponding to absorbance peaks in the 640 nm region, suggests that the intramolecular coupling is broken by excitation for complexes 6b and 6c.

- Description: This work reports on the microwave synthesis of tetrasulfonated tin phthalocyanine and tetrasulfonated tin α,β,γ-tetrabenzcorrole. The latter was only formed at low ratios (more than 1:8) of 4-sulfophthalic acid to urea. Both complexes are aggregated in aqueous media, but can be partly or fully disaggregated by the addition of Triton X-100. The α,β,γ-tetrabenzcorrole complex has lower triplet life times and yields, while the binding constant and quenching (of bovine serum albumin) constant are lower for α,β,γ-tetrabenzcorrole compared to tetrasulfonated tin phthalocyanine.

- Description: Adjacent binaphthalo-phthalocyanines tetra-substituted with phenoxy (4a), 4-carboxyphenoxy (4b) and 4-t-butylphenoxy (4c) groups, as well as the di-substituted 4-carboxyphenoxy (5b) have been synthesized and characterized. The photophysical and photochemical behavior of 4a-c, were compared with those of the corresponding di-substituted derivatives, (5a-c). The secondary substituents on the phenoxy ring have an influence on the aggregation of the molecules and hence on their photophysical properties. All of the complexes exhibit a relatively good conversion of energy from the triplet-excited state to the singlet oxygen. The less aggregated molecule (4c), has the highest singlet oxygen quantum yield. For all the molecules, fluorescence yields are low and they all have relatively shorter triplet lifetimes compared with the unsubstituted zinc phthalocyanine. Increasing the number of ring substituents on these rigid MPc complexes (from complexes 5 to 4) showed a general increase in the triplet state lifetimes and singlet oxygen quantum yields, and a decrease in stability.

- Description: Photocatalytic oxidation of 1-hexene by GaPc (1a–1c) and InPc (2a–2c) derivatives (Pc = phthalocyanine) is hereby presented. The derivatives studied are Pc octasubstituted with phenoxy (a), 4-tert-butylphenoxy (b) or benzyloxyphenoxy (c) at the peripheral positions. The photocatalytic oxidation products for 1-hexene were 1,2-epoxyhexane and 1-hexen-3-ol. The %conversion values of 1-hexene and %selectivity of 1,2-epoxyhexane were generally higher for InPc derivatives. Even though InPc derivatives showed better photocatalytic results than GaPc derivatives, the former were less stable relative to the latter. Both type I and type II mechanism were implicated in the photocatalysis mechanism.

- Description: Three non-peripherally substituted tin(IV) macrocylic compounds, octahexylphthalocyaninato dichlorotin(IV) (3a), octahexyltetrabenzo-5,10,15- triazaporphyrinato dichlorotin(IV) (3b) and octadecylphthalocyaninato dichlorotin(IV) (3c) were synthesized and their photophysical and electrochemical behavior studied. Complex 3b, containing a CH group in place of one of the aza nitrogen atoms of the phthalocyanine core, shows a split Q-band due to its lower symmetry. The triplet state quantum yields were found to be lower than would be expected on the basis of the heavy atom effect of tin as the central metal for phthalocyanine derivatives (3a and 3c). In contrast, 3b shows a triplet quantum yield ΦT = 0.78. The triplet state lifetimes were solvent dependent, and were higher in tetrahydrofuran than in toluene. Cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry of the complexes revealed only ring-based redox processes.
