- Description: The number of people in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, that are engaging in arable cropping has declined markedly over the last few decades. This is due to a number of factors such as a decrease in human capital because of migration of able-bodied people to urban areas, disinclination to participate in farming, raiding of crops by livestock and lack of equipment. This has resulted in abandoned croplands being invaded by trees and shrubs as the start of forest succession leading to a change in species composition and the ecosystem benefits reaped from these sites. Key amongst these benefits is a variety of non-timber forests products (NTFPs) which are an integral part of livelihoods in the area. The study was conducted in Willowvale, on the Wild Coast, South Africa. Aerial photographs were used to determine when cessation of cropping occurred in local fields and when revegetation began in order to determine the age of old fields. Botanical inventory and Braun-Blanquet scale were used to assess species richness, composition and abundance of vegetation in fields abandoned at different times. Focus groups were used to identify NTFPs found in these old fields, their uses as well as rank their importance to the local people. Results showed an increase in woody cover with time since field abandonment. Species richness also increased with age of the old field with approximately three species gained per decade. When species richness was disaggregated by growth forms, herbaceous plants were abundant in the early stages of succession, shrubs in the mature stages and trees increased steadily with time. A total of 177 species were recorded from 50 plots that were sampled during the ecological data collection. Of these, 70 species (39.6%) were identified by the focus group participants as NTFPs. The participants grouped the NTFPs into six categories namely: food, building, medicinal, craft, cultural and energy. There was an increase of richness of NTFPs with forest succession; however the proportion of NTFPs decreased with age suggesting an increase in non-useful species. This suggests that harvesting from plots of different ages would be the optimal way for local people to get access to a large variety of NTFPs.

Findings revealed the strengths and weakenesses of the strategies used by educators and the difficulties faced by the learners. Some of the prominent strengths for educators’ strategies were: ability to promote interactive learning and facilitating a conducive environment, enhancement of critical thinking and development of learners’ confidence through participation. Some of the prominent weakenesses of educators’ strategies were:lack of understanding on how to deal with slow learners and inability to change teaching methods to accommodate all learners, thus inhibiting inclusive education.The prominent strenghts for learners were eagerness to participate in all activities and exhibition of confidence in problem solving. This problem was compounded by the lackadaisical approach to the skills development by the department as it seemed to be employing a shotgun approach to the training and education of its labour-force. The consulted literature pointed to the existence and commonness of the skills underutilisation and its occasioning in reduced outputs and low worker-morale in the workplace. This study played a crucial role in terms of its contribution to the body of knowledge, being a reference point not only for the department of education, nonetheless, for other departments and organisations as well. The study could help the department to rectify its weaknesses and deal with their current challenges of personnel underutilisation. Policy makers and consultants could use the results of this study to formulate policies for their institutions. Lastly, students could also benefit from this study by using it as a source of reference. The qualitative method and case study as a research design employed in the study, semi-structured interviews used as a data collection method, snowballing sampling procedure used. The employees of the Department of Education used as the respondents in the study. The empirical findings in the study revealed the multiplicity of challenges associated with misplacement of qualified personnel in the department which entailed, inter alia, poor implementation of policies, programs and projects, low staff morale, poor delivery of services to the departmental clientele.

- Description: South Africa has one of the most progressive abortion laws in the world and as the constitution states, South Africans also have “the right to make deci-sions concerning reproduction”(Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996). Alongside being a free service, this should seemingly translate into accessible country-wide abortion services. However, less than one in ten public clinics actually perform abortions (Amnesty International, 2017). One of the main reasons for this has been the failure, on the part of the Depart-ment of Health, to regulate conscientious objection, ie the right of a healthcare worker to refuse to provide a service against which they are mor-ally opposed. Another reason is a lack of resources, in terms of both health professionals and finances, which manifest particularly in rural areas. As a result, women who are considering abortion either turn to illegal providers whose advertisements are scattered around towns, or towards private ser-vice providers such as Marie Stopes. Both options are usually costly, espe-cially to poor women. And illegal backstreet abortions often result in sepsis and infection. Recent data on abortion services in South Africa indicate that between 2016 and 2017, 20% of all abortions performed on women aged between 15-44 years were provided by the public health sector, while 26% and 54% of abortions were performed by illegal providers and the private health sector respectively (Lince-Deroche et al., 2018).

- Description: Income-generating projects represent one strategy adopted by the Department of Social Development to alleviate poverty. This study assessed the impact of income-generating projects funded by the department of social development in Uitenhage, Eastern Cape. The study is based on five specific objectives which sought to: assess the effectiveness of income-generating projects in Uitenhage; evaluate the formulation, implementation and overall management of income-generating projects by the Department of Social Development; 3)determine the involvement of the beneficiaries in improving their welfare; assess the roleplayed by the Department of Social Development in capacitating the project; and examine the possible challenges that the projects face that hinder them from achieving the alleviation of poverty. A sample of 22 people was selected to represent the income-generating projects members population. Non-probability sampling techniques were used in choosing the sample. Specifically, purposive sampling was one of the non-probability techniques used to ensure that all the projects were included in the research. Data were collected using questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed by using the documentation method. The result from this study showed that there are different income-generating activities and that all have need for regular monitoring and evaluation visits from officials from the Department. Project members also need training in financial management so that they do not mismanage their project finances. The research findings further indicated, clearly, that strategies currently used by the Department are not effective enough to achieve the desired goals of poverty alleviation.

A single case study research approach was utilised and the study was qualitative in nature. The research focussed on the challenges of rural local municipalities rendering municipal services to their communities and the root causes of these challenges. It furthermore assess whether the Local Government Turnaround Strategy can make a positive impact on service delivery, specifically within rural municipalities such as the Ngqushwa Local Municipality. The case study made use of an in depth literature review based on secondary sources as well as a semi structured interview with the Municipal Manager of the Ngqushwa Local Municipality. In the event that the root causes hampering service delivery can be solved, specifically in rural municipal areas, it will not only assist municipalities to comply with their constitutional duties, but will also assist with various socio-economic problems which exist within communities specifically in rural areas. The researcher experienced reluctance by the relevant employees of municipalities to part take in the research effort and to make themselves available for interviews. Large backlogs exist in relation to service delivery of municipalities specifically in rural areas. The research effort provided relevant information in relation to the root causes of the challenges which are experienced by local municipalities and what problems must be solved in order for municipalities to effectively and efficiently render service to communities in a sustainable manner.

It furthermore assess whether the Local Government Turnaround Strategy can make a positive impact on service delivery, specifically within rural municipalities such as the Ngqushwa Local Municipality. The case study made use of an in depth literature review based on secondary sources as well as a semi structured interview with the Municipal Manager of the Ngqushwa Local Municipality. In the event that the root causes hampering service delivery can be solved, specifically in rural municipal areas, it will not only assist municipalities to comply with their constitutional duties, but will also assist with various socio-economic problems which exist within communities specifically in rural areas. The researcher experienced reluctance by the relevant employees of municipalities to part take in the research effort and to make themselves available for interviews. Large backlogs exist in relation to service delivery of municipalities specifically in rural areas. The research effort provided relevant information in relation to the root causes of the challenges which are experienced by local municipalities and what problems must be solved in order for municipalities to effectively and efficiently render service to communities in a sustainable manner.

Over the last few years the South African government has focused on developing the aquaculture sector through the development of strategies and policies. The most recent strategy launched in 2014 was Operation Phakisa: Unlocking the Economic Potential of South Africa’s Oceans. The approach of Operation Phakisa looked at accelerating the delivery of government development priorities pertaining to the oceans economy, through development of plans and collaboration of delivery through all stakeholders (public and private stakeholders). Operation Phakisa methodology included bringing key stakeholders within academia, private and public sector, as well as civil society organisations to work together and develop strategies with clear targets that would drive the growth of their specific sectors. The year 2017 marked the midway point of the five year strategy implementation time frame, and an opportunity to assess the performance of the strategy implementation. In order to assess performance of the strategy implementation, the strategy implementation framework developed by Okumus (2003) was identified. Okumus (2003) identifies 11 implementation factors and categorizes these into four categories in the strategy implementation process, based on their role and characteristics, namely: Strategic Content (development of strategy), Strategic Context (internal and external context), Operational Process (operational planning, resource allocation, people, communication, and control) and Outcome (results of implementations process) (Okumus, 2003). The research involved the reviewing of documentation based on the strategy implementation as well as facilitated semi-structure interviews with two stakeholder groups. This was to gain an understanding from the stakeholders’ perspective, on whether the Aquaculture Operation Phakisa Strategy (AOPS) is implemented according to Okumus (2003) Strategy Implementation Framework. Two stakeholder groups were interviewed, namely the officials implementing the strategy, and the aquaculture farmers being affected by the strategy implementation. The research assisted with understanding the challenges affecting the implementation of the AOPS as well as unpacked strategy implementation in literature. This aided with developing recommendation to assist with enhancing strategy implementation performance of the AOPS. The following recommendation were provided: Change management within DAFF, Branch Fisheries Management; Identify responsible structures and personnel in DAFF, Branch Fisheries Management; Developing communication platforms within DAFF, Branch Fisheries Management; Review of outcomes of AOPS; and Ensure commitment from all at DAFF, Branch Fisheries Management (leadership). The literature review explores the existing information for correlation with the implementation of mSCOA and recommendations are made to the National Treasury to ensure an approach and conversion plan that would be relevant and practical in the current municipal environment and address all challenges and concerns identified within a reasonable time frame. Overall, the municipalities were not ready for the overall mSCOA implementation as depicted by the challenges municipalities are facing. However, the results of the study showed that stakeholders play a huge role in facilitating the transition to mSCOA and can also create an enabling environment for change. Management should ensure more training mechanisms are in place to ensure all employees are well- versed with the management information systems that they use daily. Management should encourage enterprise risk management principles to be part of the culture of the municipalities on every project. The importance of the research for the public sector resides in recognition of the need for a better understanding of mSCOA as a wide public-sector reform so that significant risks and challenges related to mSCOA implementation are well anticipated.

The Public Finance Management Act(1999) and National Treasury Regulations (2009) require all government departments to ensure accountability on resource allocated to be able to measure value for money in relation to the delivery services to communities. The primary objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness and efficient management of public finance in terms of the PFMA as the legislative framework and the MTEF as a financial management tool. The Constitution Republic of South Africa (Act 108 of 1996) makes a provision that all the three government spheres to be developmental-oriented in nature with clear accountability and transparency lines towards service delivery. On the same breath, The Public Finance Management Act of 1999 (PFMA) is meant “To regulate financial management in the national government and provincial governments; to ensure that all revenue, expenditure, assets and liabilities of those governments are managed efficiently and effectively; to provide for the responsibilities of persons entrusted with financial management in those governments; and to provide for matters connected therewith”. With the above introductory contentions from different authors and researchers, this study will basically be on providing more details on the policy documents namely; PFMA so to establish the nature and extent to which effective and efficient financial management has improved good governance in the Department of Treasury & Planning, Eastern Cape Province.

Capacity building efforts for cooperatives are very crucial in increasing their effectiveness and to redress problems associated with limited administrative and organisational capacity. By providing technical assistance, training, and grant funds, the functioning of the cooperatives is enhanced and ultimately the outcomes are improved. Despite consensus about the importance of capacity-building, little high-quality evidence exists on the impact of capacity-building investments. This research paper presents the findings from the assessment conducted on the impact of capacity- building initiatives offered to cooperatives. The participants of the study were cooperatives from the Eastern Cape, all eight district municipalities were represented and the study included stakeholders working with cooperatives that included various government departments, agencies and the private sector. Findings from the study provide clear evidence that capacity-building efforts increase the effectiveness of cooperatives to plan, organise and manage their organisations. It has emerged strongly from research that cooperatives that have received capacity-building support in any form, have improved in terms of their functioning compared to those that have never been capacitated before. However, cooperatives are still faced with many challenges specifically relating to operational challenges, which include administration, financial, and governance and weak capability in terms of the knowledge and skills they possess.

- Description: In this present study, the phytochemical compounds, antioxidant activities, and cytotoxicity potentials of solvent extracts (polar solvents) of Leonotis leonurus (L. leonurus) and Boophone disitcha (B. disticha) commonly used in the management of Alzheimer’s diseases in Hogsback, in the Eastern Cape, South Africa were investigated. The phytochemical compounds were determined by standard protocols of Folin–Ciocalteu method, aluminium chloride colorimetric method as well as Mayer’s and Wagner’s method. The antioxidant capabilities were assessed using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), hydrogen peroxide, 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) and nitric oxide radical scavenging assays. The majority of extracts from both plant species exhibited free radical scavenging potential for oxidants they were tested against viz; DPPH, hydrogen peroxide, ABTS and nitric oxide. They further displayed good reducing potential against ferric iron. The results have shown a concentration-dependent dose of inhibition/scavenging activity (in DPPH, hydrogen peroxide, ABTS and nitric oxide assays) and reducing ability (in ferric reducing assay). However, leaf extracts of L. leonurus displayed ineffective scavenging activity against nitric oxide whereas extracts from L. leonurus flower and B. disticha bulb had higher scavenging potential against the production of nitric oxide radical. The GC-MS profiles of the plants extracts revealed the presence of numerous bioactive compounds that are known to possess excellent anti-inflammatory and most importantly antioxidant properties. Another interesting observation of GC-MS analysis data was the presence of compounds reported to inhibit Acetycholinesterase (AChE), which is a key enzyme targeted in the treatment of Alzheimers’ Disease (AD). The cytotoxicy tests for these extracts were carried out in order to assess the potentential detrimental effects on human health using Alamar Blue assay. It was noted that an increase in the extract concentration of both plant species resulted in a noticeable decline in cell population. These extracts were then declared xix to be quite toxic against HeLa (human cervix adenocarcinoma cells) cells as the cell viability in some extracts was quite low. Hence, toxicity testing of the studied plants’ extracts against normal cells is highly imperative in the future study. The results from this present study scientifically validated the use of the studied plants in folkoric medicine for the management of Alzheimer’s diseases.

The study involved 561 participants, of whom 406 participants were from urban clinics and 155 were from rural facilities, all these participants were attending clinics at Mnquma Sub-district. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection, since the participants were able to read and write in either English and or IsiXhosa. The data was analyzed with the help of a statistician using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) program, software for windows version 21.0 Results: Results showed that participant’s responses to five of the twelve items on patient safety were found to have significant associations with residential setting. Rural participants were less likely to disagree with statements on availability of signage at the entrance of health establishment that indicates times when various services are offered, availability of the security guards to ensure patient safety, warning signs always put in place when the floors are wet, availability of at least one toilet for disabled patients in the health establishment and the fact that health professionals are always wearing name tags. This means that patient safety and security is practiced and implemented at the rural facilities according to the national core standards. The findings of the study confirmed that 13 items out of 19 under care and attitudes were found to have significant associations with residential setting. The items were patients spending less than 2 hours in the health facility; staff treating patients politely, illness being explained clearly to the patients, and ability of the patients to ask questions about their illness. Other items included nursing attitudes during opening and closing times of the health establishment, staff responding well when requested to assist, patients are being treated with empathy, patients are addressed by names and patients are being given all the treatment that they need, nurses explains the treatment side effects, and explains how to deal with side effects. This means that responses to these items depend on whether the patient is from a rural or urban clinic. Rural communities were found to be vi less likely to disagree with statements as compared to urban communities. This means that nurses are compliant with nursing care and attitudes in rural clinics. Assessment of some bacteria species isolated from woodlands of Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipality for high activity laccase production

Laccases are employed in several industrial processes that play a key responsibility in transformation of life and making the environment a better place. Bacteria have been described as best producers of laccases with a potential in the industrial scale processes. Laccase was produced from different bacterial isolates identified and named as Bacillus sp. strain GFN1 isolated from soil sample, Bacillus sp. strain GLN and Streptomyces sp. strain LAO both isolated from decaying wood samples in Raymond Mhlaba local municipality with accession numbers MK290988 to MK290990 respectively, as identified by partial sequencing, these were the best producers some of which were positive for Napthol and guaiacol; even upon quantitative screening they were better laccase producers. For quantitative laccase screening, 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6- sulphonic acid) was utilised as the substrate for laccase assays. These laccase producing bacteria were subjected to optimization of growth conditions using submerged fermentation which increased the activity of the produced laccase in great amounts. In optimizing basal medium growth conditions where laccase was harvested after every 72 hours where optimal activity was 16 obtained, studying several factors such as pH which turned out to be pH 5 for all isolates, effect of supplemented carbon and nitrogen sources with the be best being lactose and urea respectively with their effective concentrations using lignin as the main carbon and nitrogen source. Copper sulfate was used as the main inducer and the species preferred guaiacol and ferullic acid and the Fe2+ asthe best supplemented metal ion. The time course was done investigating parameters such as cell growth which was determined by observing the optical density, laccase activity, protein concentration and pH and the presented results suggested that when there was an increase in cell growth, enzyme activity decreased pH had no much effect on the enzyme production as it was almost stable all the time with protein concentration exhibiting no direct effect on enzyme activity also. Characterization of the crude enzyme was done to check the stability of the enzyme produced in various parameters. The enzymes produced by the different strains were thermophilic as they were able to withstand elevated temperatures between 90 and 100 C, with pH stability within an extensive variety of alkaline pH, typical of most bacterial laccases. Various metal ions affected the stability of the enzyme with CuSO4 increasing the stability of two of the bacterial enzyme and appeared to slightly decrease the stability of one enzyme. The studied inhibitors only decreased the stability on the enzyme and couldn’t completely inhibit the enzyme, and the enzymes showed specificity towards varying substrates. The studied bacterial laccases exhibit tremendous characteristics which are of great significance in the industries and will add to the novelty of bacterial laccases and their stability amongst the most studied fungal laccases.

The study pointed out that while supply chain corruption certainly negatively affects the day-to-day running of public affairs, it is actually the collapse of ethical behaviour together with the failure to uphold accountability and consequence management that has created fertile ground for supply chain corruption. It further, purported that in order to combat the scourge of supply chain corruption in all its manifestations, there is a need to install a Central Supplier Database application, which has been sufficiently tested to determine its effectiveness as blacklisted companies and their directors have a way of masquerading in another form, to do business with the state. South Africa needs the embodiment of ethical behaviour from its citizenry, along with anti-corruption policy enforcement and consequence management. The Kanyane Ethics Architecture should be launched in municipalities across the board as a comprehensive and all-encompassing mix model to prevent supply chain corruption, in its various manifestations, from taking place.

The researcher’s study is an attempt to pursue and record the foot-prints left by Municipal Support and Intervention Programme (MSIP) in these study sites in order to determine the potential extended implementation of the programme in other municipalities with similar challenges of political instability, poor governance, poor audit opinions, unsound financial management systems leading to poor and unsustainable municipal service delivery. The Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) conducted a diagnosis on the performance of the then 45municipalities (2007/08 Financial Year) and identified challenges of similar nature but different degrees in fifteen municipalities from the erstwhile Transkei Administration. The municipalities comprised: 2 Metropolitans, 37 Locals and 6 Districts. The diagnostic results compelled COGTA and National Treasury to develop a Municipal Support and Intervention Framework (MSIF) which was piloted in those 15 municipalities then and later adopted as a fully-fledged programme, referred to above as MSIP by the Member of Executive Committee (MEC) for COGTA and Mayors in September, 2014 at Komani (Queenstown). x The concern of the researcher is, in spite of numerous efforts by National and Provincial Departments and Treasuries, it has been observed that some municipalities are still faced with challenges of political instability, poor governance and unsound financial management/financial variability which result to poor municipal service delivery. The latter challenges manifest themselves in protests by the citizenry, poor external audit results due to ineffective political oversight coupled with the lack of scarce and critical professional technical skills. A review of existing literature assists the researcher to identify the key concepts of relevance to the study and assists the investigator to become knowledgeable to the limits, challenges and the language of the type of the research they plan to conduct. Qualitative and Quantitative Methodologies were utilised for data gathering in the two study sites. The study concluded that when the above-mentioned challenges are existing in a municipality, they will manifest themselves through the demonstrations by citizenry which sometimes lead to damage of infrastructure. It is therefore, recommended that the three spheres of government should go back to the drawing board when deploying councillors in municipality by considering basic relevant educational qualifications because the Local Government Sector is highly legislated and complicated. The learning curve is sometimes a bit longer during a five-year elections term. This should be the same considerations when technocrats are being appointed at the level of Section 54 and 56, in terms of Municipal Systems Act, No. 32 of 2000, especially in the area of scarce and critical professional skills. In the case of educational, training and development gaps, the National Department of Co-operative Governance, National Treasury and the South African Local Government Association (SALGA), could enhance upskilling supporting politicians and municipal senior managers with accredited and refresher courses

The study concluded that when the above-mentioned challenges are existing in a municipality, they will manifest themselves through the demonstrations by citizenry which sometimes lead to damage of infrastructure. It is therefore, recommended that the three spheres of government should go back to the drawing board when deploying councillors in municipality by considering basic relevant educational qualifications because the Local Government Sector is highly legislated and complicated. The learning curve is sometimes a bit longer during a five-year elections term. This should be the same considerations when technocrats are being appointed at the level of Section 54 and 56, in terms of Municipal Systems Act, No. 32 of 2000, especially in the area of scarce and critical professional skills. In the case of educational, training and development gaps, the National Department of Co-operative Governance, National Treasury and the South African Local Government Association (SALGA), could enhance upskilling supporting politicians and municipal senior managers with accredited and refresher courses

Assessment of the role of the board of directors in the implementation of corporate governance in the state owned entities: a case in the Eastern Cape Province

This concept has received too much attention due to the number of reported corporate scandals in both public and private entities. Due to these highly publicized governance failures, the role of Board of Directors in the implementation of corporate governance has been questioned. Their role has been the topic of interest. The main aim of this study was to assess the role of the Board of Directors in the implementation of Corporate Governance in the State Owned Entities in the Eastern Cape Province. It also aimed to determine the strategies and mechanisms that can be used to enhance the role played by the Board of directors in the successful implementation of corporate governance in the public entities. This research was qualitative in nature and as part of this approach data was gathered through questionnaires and interviews. For this study, small scale and manageable sample was used. The sample was selected with the view that all the participants selected were experienced and directly involved in the policy and decision-making as well as in implementation of corporate governance in the state-owned entities. The secondary data was collected through the audit reports, performance, and annual reports of the different public entities. The findings of this study revealed that some Board of Directors are unable to play the effective role in the implementation of corporate governance due to lack of experience and skills required. The research has also revealed that the Boards are not effective in their role due to lax in enforcing accountability by the shareholder. The findings on poor performance management of the Boards is because of no standardized performance management system for the Eastern Cape Province public entities in place. Political deployment of board members had an impact in the independency and objectivity of the boards. The study recommends the appointment of skilled and qualifying board members, training and induction of newly appointed be conducted. Development of accountability framework for all the boards of the public entities in the Eastern Cape. For the Boards to successfully play an effective role in the implementation of corporate governance, adequate budget should be allocated to the public entities. Lastly, the development of the standardized performance management system and framework with prescribed key responsibility areas for all the Boards of the state owned entities will assist the Boards in knowing what is expected of them.

The MNPs, 2-[5-(phenoxy)-isophthalic acid] 9(10), 16(17), 23(24)-tris (tertbutyl) phthalocyaninato Zn (II) (2) and 2, 10, 16, 24 – tetra 5-(phenoxy)-isophthalic acid phthalocyaninato] Zn (II) (3) as well as their respective conjugates are embedded into electrospun polyamide-6 (PA-6) fibers for support and catalyst regeneration. The resulting photocatalyts (CoFe/PA-6, 2/PA-6, 3/PA-6, CoFe-2/PA-6, and CoFe-3/PA-6) were compared based on their photophysical properties and photocatalytic efficiencies in degrading azo dyes; Methyl Orange (MO) and Orange G (OG). CoFe-2/PA-6 and CoFe-3/PA-6 were found to be more effective photocatalysts than their respective electrospun Pcs and MNPs. The degradation of OG was found to follow pseudo first order kinetics and the Langmuir–Hinshelwood model while that of MO does not.

A limited amount of research has investigated the association between attachment and personal meaning while no studies have investigated the association between attachment, personal meaning, and sources of meaning. The current study aimed to investigate the association between different attachment styles, personal meaning, and sources of meaning in order to develop a deeper understanding of their relationships. A quantitative exploratory-descriptive design was used to collect the data using standardized questionnaires from 226 participants. Statistical analysis of the data suggests that a secure attachment style is positively associated with personal meaning and presented with meaning sources consisting of breadth and depth. A fearful attachment style was associated with a lack of personal meaning and sources of meaning while a preoccupied attachment style was associated with a lack of personal meaning and presented with sources of meaning lacking in depth and breadth. No significant association was found between a dismissive attachment style and personal meaning, but associations were found with sources of meaning, including feeling financially secure, experiencing personal growth, meeting basic everyday needs, and leaving a legacy for the next generation. Recommendations for psychotherapy based on the findings of the study were offered.
