  • Description: This lute is peculiar to the district. The stick which forms the neck of the lute is pierced right through the gourd body, protruding about 5" on the opposite side. The single string is attached to the tip of this end, passes over the membrane on the gourd and a bridge (which is also made from pieces of gourd and is attached by means of a short piece of wire to avoid losing it when the instrument is slackened off after playing) and is attached at the end to a short fork in the stick which effectively prevents slipping. It is played by means of a short bow with sisal fibre. Topical song with Mbebe string lute.

  • Description: A song of welcome to a friend. He also warns him not to drink "Enguli" or Nubian gin, which is distilled from 'Jagri', unrefined sugar still in the coagulated stage. 'Jagri' is the Hindustani word for this and the customers for this commodity at Indian stores have taken over the foreign word. This brilliant singer is well known in Buganda. The clarity both of his singing and playing on the harp is delightful. Song with horizontal, arched, 8 stringed harp.

  • Description: A dance for festive occasions. The Buudu is a Bantu tribe which has moved across westwards from the Rwenzori mountains about 300 miles to the present locality. They are unusually dark skinned for Bantu and use a variety of musical instruments, relying mostly on slit drums for their dance music. Slit drums are common because large timber is plentiful but cattle or antelope skins rare for the making of membranes. The membranes of their conical drums are therefore usually made from elephant ears. Party dance with two conical drums, snall slit drum, two pod drums, ivory horn, basket rattles and two metal hand bells.
