  • Description: The research problem addressed in this study was to identify what management skills do middle managers require to manage the organisational units effectively. To achieve this objective a theoretical model of management skills required by middle managers to effectively manage a public hospital was developed, using relevant literature in which management skills are identified. The theoretical model consisted of the following categories of management skills whose correct application can promote managerial effectiveness in managing organisational units: General management skills; Technical skills; Human skills; Leadership skills; Financial management skills; Computer skills. Each category of the management skills was broken down into elements that were then analysed using literature identified during the literature study. The model was then used to develop a questionnaire to assess the degree to which managers responsible for running the clinical, nursing and paramedical departments of a public hospital in the Eastern Cape rate the elements in terms of importance. The empirical results obtained indicate that a wide variety of skills are regarded by middle managers as important to performance of their managerial roles. This resulted in the theoretical model being confirmed and the identified management skills being accepted as management skills required by middle managers to effectively manage a public hospital in the Eastern Cape.

Impact of fire frequency on woody community structure and soil nutrients in the Kruger National Park

  • Description: Although fire is recognised as an important determinant of the structure and function of South African savannas, there are few studies of long-term impacts. Controlled burning blocks of contrasting fire season and frequency have been maintained throughout the Kruger National Park for almost 50 years. This paper reports on a quantitative study of the Satara plots to determine the long-term impacts of fire frequency on woody community structure and soil nutrients. Increasing fire frequency significantly decreased woody plant basal area, biomass, density, height, and mean stem circumference. The number of stems per plant and the proportion of regenerative stems increased with increasing fire frequency. Effects on species richness of woody plants were inconsistent. There were no significant differences attributable to fire frequency for any of the soil variables except organic matter and magnesium. Organic carbon was highest in the fire exclusion treatment and lowest in soils from plots burnt triennially. Magnesium levels were greatest in the annually burnt soils and least in the triennial plots.

  • Description: The research problem addressed in this study is to determine what affect current labour legislation has on small, medium and micro-enterprises (SMME’s), in particular with regard to the procuring of Government contracts. To achieve this objective a literature study was undertaken to ascertain what knowledgeable people believed was the affects of labour legislation on SMME’s. The literature study included all relevant labour legislation promulgated by the Government since 1994 The literature study was then used to develop a questionnaire to test the degree to which SMME’s, operating in the Municipal areas of East London and King Williams Town, abided by the relevant labour legislation. The empirical results, in general, indicated a strong adherence to labour legislation. Those organisations that had not strictly adhered to labour legislation were, in most instances, not successful in securing contracts offered by Government or parastatals. The results indicated that all the role-players, namely businesses, trade unions and knowledgeable people have valid arguments both for and against labour legislation. Each group, is however, still concerned and suspicious that in one way or another, they will be placed at a disadvantage with respect to the others positions, and this places a serious strain on the South African economy.

  • Description: Rinderpest, the most dreaded bovine plague, struck the cattle of the BaSotho in British Basutoland early in 1897. By December the murrain had spent itself, having reduced the cattle population by half As it did so, the rinderpest claimed the primary historical significance of an epidemic. By sharpening behaviour and illuminating latent or developing tendencies, the rinderpest helped to reveal the nooks and crannies of contemporary historical processes that would have otherwise eluded historical visibility. This thesis brings out the complexities and ambiguities surrounding the epidemic. It uses the crisis occasioned by the panzootic in its multifaceted manifestations as a prism through which we might view the complex aspects of contemporary historical processes. It goes beyond the narrow limits of the crisis itself to discerning the broader and wider historical patterns that the rinderpest helped to highlight.

  • Description: Fisheries-dependent and independent data have a strong spatial component. These data are also multi-dimensional, making them difficult to visualize and analyze, prompting the use of spatial analysis to facilitate an understanding of their relationships. One aspect of fisheries data that is often ignored is the distribution and abundance of a particular resource and the fishing patterns of its harvesting fisheries. In order to improve management advice, stock assessors need to incorporate the spatial component of these data into an existing assessment framework. This paper presents a three-dimensional visualization of the age-structure and fishery dependent and independent data associated with the sparid fish Pterogymnus laniarius on the Agulhas Bank, South Africa. A spatially-referenced spawner biomass per-recruit model is developed to illustrate the applicability of incorporating spatially referenced information in providing management advice. The model provided evidence that, even on a spatial scale, fishing mortality is significantly correlated to fishing effort. Areas of high levels of spawner biomass are noted, all of which corresponded to those geographic areas with a combination of low fishing effort and high adult biomass.

  • Description: The Motor Industry is set in a highly competitive and dynamic global arena constantly shaped by both external and internal forces. From an organisations point of view many of the external or macro forces are largely uncontrollable. Against this backdrop, players in the South African Motor Industry need to find new methods of differentiating themselves from competitors – One manner of performing this strategy is for Motor Dealerships to understand, meet or exceed customer requirements. In this research, the literature survey revealed the concepts of Total Quality Management (TQM) and fail-safing, the meaning of superior customer service and the importance of customer loyalty and retention. Customer service excellence levels of three Williams Hunt dealerships in the Port Elizabeth – Uitenhage metropole were measured by utilizing the SERVQUAL instrument for calibrating service quality. Customer expectations and perceptions were determined by means of the empirical study which yielded a service quality “gap.” From analysis of this gap and related findings, suggested improvements were suggested as a guideline for dealerships to utilise with the aim of improving customer service levels.

  • Description: This work reports on the kinetics of interaction of iron(II) tetrasulfophthalocyanine, [FeTSPc]4−, with dopamine (DA) and serotonin (5-HT). The interaction results in the coordination of dopamine and serotonin to [FeTSPc]4−, followed by internal electron transfer and the formation of [(DA+)FeITSPc]4− and [(5-HT+) FeITSPc]4− complexes, respectively. The rate constants for the coordination of dopamine or serotonin to [FeTSPc]4− and the formation of the FeITSPc species were found to be kf=6.8 and 9.3 dm3 mol−1 s−1, respectively. The equilibrium constants were 2.2×103 and 1.5×103 dm3 mol−1, respectively, for the interaction of dopamine or serotonin to [FeTSPc]4−.

  • Description: The interaction of nitric oxide (NO) with cobalt(II) tetrasulfophthalocyanine [Co(II)TSPc]4−) has been studied. Coordination of NO is accompanied by electron transfer from the central metal in [Co(II)TSPc]4−, the resulting complex being represented as [(NO−)Co(III)TSPc]4−. The rate constant for the formation of this species is kf=142±7 dm3 mol−1 s−1 and an equilibrium constant of 3.0±0.5×105 dm3 mol−1 was obtained. When adsorbed to a glassy carbon electrode, [Co(II)TSPc]4− catalyses the oxidation and reduction of NO, with a detection limit of the order of 10−9 mol dm−3. Ammonia and hydroxylamine are some of the reduction products obtained for the reduction of NO on [Co(II)TSPc]4−-modified glassy carbon electrodes.

  • Description: Binding of aluminium to acetylcholine has important biological implications particularly in Alzheimer's disease. An electrochemical technique, adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry, has been employed in this study to investigate the in-situ formation of a complex between aluminium and acetylcholine. The stability of the resulting complex was compared with that of the in-situ complexes formed between acetylcholine and sodium or calcium. From the shifts in the reduction potential of the metals on addition of acetylcholine it is concluded that a strong complex is formed between acetylcholine and aluminium. Much weaker complexes are formed between calcium or sodium and acetylcholine. These results have important implications in the aetiology of Alzheimer's disease-in which brain aluminium concentrations are known to be high and brain cholinergic function is lower than normal.

  • Description: The intertidal population structure of the large edible gastropod Turbo sarmaticus was examined at four sites along the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. One site was free from exploitation, two were subjected to low levels of exploitationand one was heavily exploited. Within the intertidal zone at all sites there was a size-related distribution, with smalleranimals being found towards the upper mid-shore and larger animals occurring in a downshore direction. The mean shore densities (1.2–animals/m2) and biomass (4.4–9.4 g/m2) of T. sarmaticus at the sites where there was no, or minimal, exploitation of animals were not significantly different (P0.001). However, the largest animals (up to 110mmshell length) were found at the unexploited site, an offshore island. The lowest density (0.2 animals/m2) and biomass (0.4 g/m2) of T. sarmaticus was recorded at the site where the exploitation of this gastropod was intense. In addition, no animals of a legally exploitable size (>70 mm shell length) were found. It is suggested that intense over-exploitation is threatening the population at this site.

  • Description: In this research customer service excellence in First National Bank in the Port Elizabeth metropole was investigated. From the industry and competitor analysis it can be concluded that banking is a highly competitive industry that is undergoing constant change because of fierce competition. The literature survey was aimed at placing the concept of service quality, excellence and customer loyalty which lead to customer retention into perspective. The concept of total quality management outlining the specific requirements of how the concept can be utilised and how a service quality programme can be implemented was discussed. The purpose of the empirical study was to test customers’ perceptions of service provided by First National Bank and to contribute with useful information to the bank studied. From these findings improvements and recommendations were suggested as a guideline for any bank to follow to improve customer service levels. The empirical study results were satisfactory and informative. The meaningful positive responses that were identified can be utilised as competitive marketing strategies by FNB. The meaningful negative concerns the bank should consider improving upon and attention should be given to the language and SBU differences outlined.
