- Description: The South Asian women’s diaspora engages in spatio-temporal interactions and power differentials in a variety of narratives, articulating agency, multiplicities of belonging and culturally integrative practices, highlighting homing paradigms. The sense of alienness in a new homeland, rather in worldwide home places, triggers rethinking of diasporic conceptions and epistemes of individual and group histories, personal and collective experiences. Some of the questions that this anthology seeks to consider are: How do women from the South Asian diaspora represent cultural negotiations and alienness of the adopted homeland in various narratives? What are the themes/issues they select to portray their perceptions of foreignness? How do culture, history and politics intervene in their portrayal of lived experiences? How do they locate themselves in the matrix of foreignness and diaspora? The contributors to this anthology examine narratives depicting South Asian women, their complexly positioned voices, gesturing at the proliferating challenges and reflecting the grim realities of a globalized world.

A Critical Evaluation of Validation Practices in the Forensic Acquisition of Digital Evidence in South Africa

- Language: English
- Type: text , book
- Identifier: http://hdl.handle.net/10962/440174 , vital:73754 , ISBN 9783030660390 , https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-030-66039-0_9
- Description: Accepted digital forensics practice requires the tools used in the forensic acquisition of digital evidence to be validated, meaning that the tools perform as intended. In terms of Sect. 15 of the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act 25 of 2002 in South Africa, validation would contribute to the reliability of the digital evidence. A sample of digital forensic practitioners from South Africa was studied to determine to what extent they make use of validated forensic tools during the acquisition process, and how these tools are proven to be validated. The research identified significant concerns, with no validation done, or no proof of validation done, bringing into question the reliability of the digital evidence in court. It is concerning that the justice system itself is not picking this up, meaning that potentially unreliable digital evidence is used in court.

African Foreign Policies: Selecting signifiers to explain agency
- Authors: Bischoff, Paul, 1954-
- Date: 2020

- Language: English

- Description: This book explores, at a time when several powers have become serious players on the continent, aspects of African agency, past and present, by African writers on foreign policy, representative of geography, language and state size. In the past, African foreign policy has largely been considered within the context of reactions to the international or global 'external factor'. This ground-breaking book, however, looks at how foreign policy has been crafted and used in response not just to external, but also, mainly, domestic imperatives or (theoretical) signifiers. As such, it narrates individual and changing foreign policy orientations over time - and as far back as independence - with mainly African-based scholars who present their own constructs of what is a useful theoretical narrative regarding foreign policy on the continent - how theory is adapted to local circumstance or substituted for continentally based ontologies. The book therefore contends that the African experience carries valuable import for expanding general understandings of foreign policy in general. This book will be of key interest to scholars and students of Foreign Policy Analysis, Foreign Policy Studies, African International Relations/Politics/Studies, Diplomacy and more broadly to International Relations. , Introduction / Paul-Henri Bischoff -- What Next? Past and present African foreign policy concepts and practices / Paul-Henri Bischoff -- The African Union as a Foreign Policy Player: African Agency in International Cooperation / Tshepo Gwatiwa -- Unprincipled Pragmatism and Anti-Imperialist Impulses in an Interconnected World: The Zuma Presidency, 2009-2017 / Mzukisi Qobo -- Towards A Strategic Culture Approach to Understanding and Conceptualising Ethiopia's Foreign Policy Towards Israel and the Middle Eastern Arab Countries / Makonnen Tesfaye -- Nigeria's Foreign Policy and Intervention Behaviour in Africa: What Role for Agency? / Olumuyiwa Amao -- Zimbabwe and New Signifiers: Towards a cultural political economy of Foreign Policy Making / Mike Mavura -- Realist Conceptions of Kenya's Foreign Policy and Foreign Policy Behaviour: A Theoretical and Contextual Disposition / Korwa Gombe Adar and Mercy Kathambi Kaburu -- Addressing the Conceptual Void of African Small State Foreign Policy in Orthodox Theory: A Case Study of Botswana's Principled Pragmatism / Kabelo M. Mahupela -- Tunisia's Foreign Policy Towards France Before and After an Undemanding 'Revolution': A Theoretical Explanation of the An-Nahdha-led Interim Governments' Soft Policy / Ahmed Ali Salem -- Straddling Between Convergence and Divergence: A Constructivist's View of Malawi's Foreign Policy in Post-independence Africa / Eugenio Njoloma -- Strategies of a Small State Between Realism and Liberalism: Sixty Years of Guinea's Diplomacy and Foreign Policy (1958-2018) / Issaka K. Souaré -- Rethinking SADC's Collective Policymaking Processes on External Relations and Non-state Participation for Region-building / Cecilia Lwiindi Nedziwe -- Towards an Understanding of the Interplay Between Ghana's Foreign and Defence Policies / Kwesi Aning and Kwaku Danso -- Conclusion / Paul-Henri Bischoff

Anger, Pain and the Body in the Public Sphere:

- Language: English
- Type: text , book
- Identifier: http://hdl.handle.net/10962/158459 , vital:40188 , ISBN 9781776145898
- Description: In this timely, original and sophisticated collection, writers from the Global South demonstrate that forms of publicness are multiple, mobile and varied. The notion that societies mediate issues through certain kinds of engagement is at the heart of imaginings of democracy and often centers on the ideal of the public sphere. But this imagined foundation of how we live collectively appears to have suffered a dramatic collapse across the world, with many democracies apparently unable to solve problems through talk – or even to agree on who speaks, in what ways and where. In the 10 essays in this timely, original and sophisticated collection, writers from southern Africa combine theoretical analysis with the examination of historical cases and contemporary developments to demonstrate that forms of publicness are multiple, mobile and varied. They propose new concepts and methodologies to analyse how public engagements work in society.

- Description: Ways of conceptualising the world around us and being in this world are defined by an ontological understanding. Within a Eurocentric ideological understanding, nature is positioned to be opposite to culture, ie, nature is considered as “other” of which humans are not a part. Modernity is perceived as the antithesis of nature as processes of production, metabolism and expansion of modern cities represent attempts to tame and control nature. In turn, cities have become viewed as agents of development and change, promoting ideals of progress, thinking and innovation (Jayne 2005). Eurocentric ideals are framed as the forerunners of these processes and have come to influence international policies, global governance, alliances and networks which have in turn informed the design and governance of cities and influenced all aspects of urban liveability (Bouteligier 2011), including how urban natures are defined and constructed and the wellbeing benefits derived from them.

Detecting Similarity in Multi-procedure Student Programs Using only Static Code Structure

- Description: Plagiarism is prevalent in most undergraduate programming courses, including those where more advanced programming is taught. Typical strategies used to avoid detection include changing variable names and adding empty spaces or comments to the code. Although these changes affect the visual components of the source code, the underlying structure of the code remains the same. This similarity in structure can indicate the presence of plagiarism. A system has been developed to detect the similarity in the structure of student programs. The detection system works in two phases: The first phase parses the source code and creates a syntax tree, representing the syntactical structure of each of the programs, while the second takes as inputs two program syntax trees and applies various comparison algorithms to detect their similarity. The outcome of the comparison allows the system to report a result from one of four similarity categories: identical structure, isomorphic structure, containing many structural similarities, and containing few structural similarities. Empirical tests on small sample programs show that the prototype implementation is effective in detecting plagiarism in source code, although in some cases manual checking is needed to confirm the presence of plagiarism.

- Description: Invasive alien plant species negatively affect agricultural production, degrade conservation areas, reduce water supplies, and increase the intensity of wild fires. Since 1913, biological control agents ie plant-feeding insects, mites, and fungal pathogens, have been deployed in South Africa to supplement other management practices (herbicides and mechanical controls) used against these invasive plant species. We do not describe the biological control agent species.

- Authors: Cocks, Michelle L , Shackleton, Charlie M
- Date: 2020
- Language: English
- Type: text , book
- Identifier: http://hdl.handle.net/10962/175733 , vital:42619 , ISBN 9781000215182
- Description: The different geographic regions represented in the book have brought to the fore the diversity of ways in which nature is conceptualised, which have in turn influenced the types of nature found in urban areas. Through processes of urbanisation, colonialism, immigration and migration a diversity of cultural groups now live in urban areas and consequently, biocultural relationships have been suppressed, reshaped or enriched. Accordingly, a diversity of uses, experiences, cosmologies, interactions and engagement with the nature are now found which, for many, offer opportunities to strengthen a sense of wellbeing and belonging. Within these diversities of ontological framings of nature and ways of being, conflicting tensions emerge which are further impacted upon by micro and macro social, economic and political processes.

- Description: This chapter examines current knowledge relating to the human and social dimensions of biological invasions in South Africa. We do so by advancing 12 propositions and examining the evidence for or against each using South African literature. The propositions cover four broad issues: how people cause invasions; how they conceptualise them; effects of invasive species on people; and peoples’ responses to them.

The Transformative Power of Language: From Postcolonial to Knowledge Societies in Africa
- Kaschula, Russell H, Wolff, H Ekkehard

- Date: 2020
- Language: English
- Type: text , book
- Identifier: http://hdl.handle.net/10962/174514 , vital:42484 , ISBN 9781108498821
- Description: Language has played a pivotal role in societal transformation in postcolonial Africa towards the creation of globally competitive knowledge societies; however so far, this role has been under-researched and under-estimated. This volume addresses this gap in the literature, by bringing together a team of globally-recognised scholars to explore the effect of language on African postcolonial societies, and how it has contributed to achieving 'mental decolonisation'. A range of languages are explored, both imported (ex-colonial) and indigenous African, and case studies from different spheres of public discourse are investigated, from universities to legal settings. Demonstrating that multilingualism is a resource for, rather than barrier to, successful transformation, this book brings the intellectualisation and institutionalisation of African languages to the forefront of development discourse, and provides an insightful snap-shot of how current academic research, public discourse, political activism and social community engagement have contributed to societal transformation in South Africa.

Tracing the Voice of Protest in Selected Oral Literature:
- Authors: Kaschula, Russell H

- Language: English
- Type: text , book
- Identifier: http://hdl.handle.net/10962/174452 , vital:42479 , ISBN 9783030555177
- Description: This chapter aims to present the notion of “protest” as a contested arena in the production of oral literature, against the backdrop of continued and contested sociopolitical change in Africa. This contestation can be politically based, gender based and sometimes even based in religion. The chapter looks specifically at poetry, songs and the folktale to establish how the “voice of protest” has been presented over time in relation to specific African countries such as Senegal, South Africa, Somali, Guinea, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Zimbabwe and Lesotho. Poetic protest as part of political protest is also discussed. Furthermore, the chapter seeks to explore how this “voice of protest” has been received, both from an audience point of view and from the point of view of those who control power.

- Language: English
- Type: text , book
- Identifier: http://hdl.handle.net/10962/174502 , vital:42483 , ISBN 9781108498821
- Description: There is a disjuncture between the intentions of the South African constitutional provisions as contained in Section 6, which prescribe that all eleven official languages be treated equitably, and what is happening on the ground at the institutions of higher learning. In these institutions, English remains the primary language of instruction. African languages are encouraged as support languages in certain instances, but no institution has an African language as a medium of instruction (see for example the Rhodes Language Policy, 2019). This chapter calls into question the use of language and argues for purposive interpretation and practical implementation of the constitutional provisions on language. A proper and linguistically sound understanding of multilingualism as a developmental resource–educational, legal and societal–needs to emerge (Wolff, 2016). The constitutional aspects are explicated in the legislative and policy frameworks discussed in this chapter.

Transnational Crime in Deon Meyer’s Devil’s Peak and Santiago Gamboa’s Night Prayers:

- Description: Naidu argues that transnational crime wreaks havoc on global, national and personal levels in the postcolonial crime novels Devil’s Peak (2007) by South African author Deon Meyer and Night Prayers (2016) by Colombian author Santiago Gamboa. As postcolonial crime novels, they critique sociopolitical instability and corruption harking back to colonial times. Using mobility studies, Naidu interrogates the novels’ rendering of complex relations between the local and the global, and the past and the present. Despite stylistic and generic differences, both novels engage with the pervasive, transnational nature of criminal syndicates and current crimes which are a result of turbulent and unjust histories. Naidu examines the mobility of hapless victims, postcolonial anti-detectives and subversive heroines and comments on the ironic hope afforded by such figures.
