The friction sticks are held in the left hand, the serated parts downwards and scraped with a small stick. The song was originally sung by Matengo people, a small tribe who were overrun and absorbed by the Ngoni people, it is said. If the explanation of the singers is correct, the song must be about 60-70 years old. Who Lile may have been, no one knew. M'kwenda dance with 5 Umkwenda friction sticks.
