Dietary preference and perceptions of the health implications: A qualitative study on perspectives from outpatients and health care providers at Nontyatyambo Community Health Centre, Eastern Cape, South Africa

- Description: Introduction and background. Poor dietary choices are resulting in an increase of mortality and morbidity rates globally. Epidemiological studies reveal that diets high in animal-sourced foods (ASF) lead to an increased risk of developing cardio-metabolic diseases (CMD). On the other hand, plant-based foods (PBF) have been shown to reduce this risk. Making well informed dietary choices plays an important role in reducing the burden of these diseases. To this end, this study further explores the role that diet plays in maintaining good health by exploring current dietary preferences, perceptions of the health implications of these dietary choices and perceptions of the benefits of PBFs vs ASFs of people in a local South African context. Methodology. This qualitative study was conducted at Nontyatyambo Community Health Centre, Mdantansane, Buffalo City Metropolitan district in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. A sample of 42 participants was enrolled for the study. A question/interview guide was used to collect data through key-in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. Two audio recorders were used to record the verbal responses of participants. The recorded interviews were transcribed and translated to English. The transcribed data was systematically and thematically analyzed. Results. It was found that all participants in this study were following an omnivorous dietary pattern. A number of participants expressed that they did not like vegetables. In this study, most participants felt that PBFs were healthier than ASFs. Even though they felt PBFs were healthier, none followed exclusively plant-based diet. Conclusion. Transforming dietary patterns to contain more plant-based foods may be a critical factor in reversing harmful effects on public health and the environment. This calls for urgent public health intervention to improve nutritional uptake as a strategy to reduce potential CMD. , Thesis (MPA) -- Faculty of Health Sciences, 2022

- Description: Over the past decades, cash cropping had been dominant in many developing economies. In Zimbabwe, tobacco has been an important cash crop for the majority of smallholder farmers. The crop generates large profits as compared to the next best alternative cash crop and it is an important source of government revenue. Many smallholder farmers have thus resorted into tobacco farming because of accrue benefits attached to the crop. In addition to large profits, the availability of incentives which support production of this crop has also been a motive for many smallholder farmers in Zimbabwe. Contrary to the availability of incentives to support tobacco production, the lack of government subsidies has discouraged smallholder farmers to engage into food crop productions. However, despite their increased interest in tobacco farming, many smallholder farmers have remained poor. They continue to live in poverty, even though they produce an important cash crop for export. Food security in the country has been deteriorated because of concentrations in cash cropping. Therefore, this study has been undertaken to investigate whether the commercialization of the peasant farmer has been responsible for the food crisis that the country is experiencing at present. The study utilized the neo-classical theory of farm production to clarify the reasons why peasant producers engage into certain types of production. - Description: This study seeks to investigate the Life Orientation (LO) Learning Outcomes the selected educators teach in the Intermediate and Senior Phase. It focuses on two Junior Secondary Schools (J.S.S.) in Butterworth Education District of the Eastern Cape Province. According to the Department of Education (2002) Life Orientation is mandatory for all learners in the Senior and Further Education and Training phases of Basic Education. It offers possibilities for equipping learners in South Africa with the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values to develop confidence within themselves and to become responsible citizens. In this inquiry, the study used qualitative research methods to explore how teachers and learners perceive the implementation of LO. The research on both teachers and learners has testified that the most looked part in LO is its importance on the developmental aspect of learners. The finding also draws strongly from what the literature has revealed, that Life Orientation curriculum expressly revolves around learners achieving outcomes, which are identified and assessed through the acquisition and demonstration of knowledge, skills, attitudes and value. The educators affirmed that LO was an important subject but was looked down by many teachers as less interesting and boring. The interviewees argued that LO contributes to best understanding of challenges facing our youth. One major recommendation was that grade teachers must draw insights from various teaching approaches and move beyond using one approach to deliver LO. - Description: This study attempted to identify realistic strategies that are accepted by those in the Jua Kali sector of Kenya’s informal economy. The strategies were seen as being relevant, practical and achievable in integrating the sector, or some parts of it, in the formal economy. Special attention was given to export potential as the driving force in socio-economic development. Since Jua Kali enterprises are widely spread throughout an area covering all the more heavily populated regions of Kenya, including many small villages as well as major towns, a comprehensive, nationwide study was out of the question. For this reason, the study was limited to the following areas with known and readily accessible concentrations of Jua Kali entrepreneurs. This included key suburbs of Nairobi and key regional towns like Machakos, Athi River and Mlolongo. The objectives of the study were to establish the problems faced by the informal sector in Kenya, to find out how such problems have affected the relevant artisans, to investigate if the artisans were aware of those problems and what they were doing if anything, to solve the problems they encountered. Finally, the study sought to establish what the other stakeholders were doing to improve the informal sector. The bulk of the literature reviewed underscored the facts that: the manufacturing sub–sector of Kenya’s informal economy has immense potential as an engine for driving the nation’s economy. Secondly, the full potential of the informal sector will only be realised if the manufacturers concerned are empowered to develop their own strategies for developing the informal economy. Such strategies should aim towards the goal of producing and marketing high quality products that are sold to both local and at the international markets via exports. The study adopted critical ethnography as its research method. Critical ethnography as a method requires a plan for the conducting of field research that is reflexive in nature whereby the researcher facilitates a consensual process in which the subjects reflect on their own situation and develop their own solutions to problems. In the present case the process was a communal one with a consensual decision making and actions by the subjects. All interpretations and meaning to activities and actions to be taken were thereof informed by the subjects being studied. At the end of the study, the findings of the analysis were presented to each of the participating subjects for their final comments with those comments being incorporated in the report. The principles of critical ethnography therefore, were seen as providing an ideal framework for exploring the possibilities of self–empowerment that enabled the subjects of the study to fulfil their potential within this important sector. Data analysis and presentation have been presented using tables. Finally, the study’s conclusions and recommendations have been presented in the relevant and subsequent chapters therein.
