Exploring the drivers of co-occurring multiple non-native fish assemblages within an invaded and flow-modified African river system

- Description: Globally, there is growing concern on the negative impacts of species invasions and habitat disturbance because these have been shown to have the potential to disrupt native community structure and function. In some instances, these two stressors can occur in concert, such as in river systems associated with inter-basin water transfer (IBWT) schemes. The Great Fish River in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, is an example of a system affected by both habitat modification and multiple fish invasions largely because of an IBWT scheme. The opening of the Orange-Fish IBWT, which transfers water from the Orange River to the Great Fish River, modified the latter’s natural flow regime from irregular seasonal to perennial. In addition, the IBWT facilitated translocations of five fish species from the Gariep Dam (Orange River system) into the Great Fish River system. Proliferation of these non-native fish species, along with that of other fish species introduced for angling and biological control, raise questions on the mechanisms facilitating their existence within this highly modified river system. This thesis explored mechanisms associated with co-occurrences of these multiple non-native fishes within the Great Fish River. A comparison of historical and contemporary records on the ichthyofauna of the Great Fish River revealed that, of the 11 non-native fishes reported in this system, seven have established successfully, three have failed to establish and the status of one was uncertain. The Orange-Fish IBWT and angling were the main vectors of these invasions, accounting for 36% and 46%, respectively. The study also found that most established non-native fish species were large sized, had high longevity and wide habitat tolerance. Trait-based approaches were employed to investigate the role of functional diversity of non-native and native fishes in relation to their composition, distribution and environmental relationships. Although considerable interspecific variation in body morphology-related functional traits among species were observed, there was no clear distinction in these traits between native and non-native fish assemblages on a trait-ordination space. Furthermore, there were weak species-trait-environment relationships, suggesting that environmental filtering was less plausible in explaining the occurrence patterns of these fishes. Stable isotope-based trophic relationships were evaluated in three invaded sections: the upper (UGFR) mainstem sections of the Great Fish River; and lower (LGFR) mainstem sections of the Great Fish River; and its tributary, the Koonap River. It was observed that native and non-native fish assemblages exhibited variation in isotopic diversity typified by low isotopic diversity overlaps in UGFR and Koonap River, whereas the LGFR was characterised by high isotopic diversity overlap. Within the invaded sections, non-native fishes were found to have isotopic niches characterised by variable isotopic niche sizes and were more isotopically dissimilar with propensity towards trophic differentiation within the UGFR and Koonap River but were mostly characterised by high isotope niche overlaps in the LGFR. Overall, these results provided evidence of trophic niche differentiation as a probable mechanism associated with the co-occurrences of the non-native fishes. However, mechanisms facilitating these co-occurrences within the invaded sections appears to be complex, context-specific and, in some cases, unclear. Lastly, machine learning techniques, boosted (BRT) and multivariate (MRT) regression trees, revealed that the flow-disturbed habitats were invaded by multiple non-native species, whereas the non-disturbed headwaters remained invasion free. In addition, non-native species were predicted to co-occur with native species within the mainstem and large tributary sections of the Great Fish River system. Macroplastics in the environment: are they suitable habitats for macroinvertebrates in riverine systems?

- Description: Emerging pollutants, such as plastics are threat to freshwater ecosystems, and may negatively impact riverine systems. They can modify riverine habitats and affect aquatic organism distribution and composition. Knowledge of how macroplastics alter riverine habitat heterogeneity, and their effects on macroinvertebrate assemblage structure is sparse, especially in Africa. This study examines the effect of hydraulic biotopes on the colonisation, establishment and succession patterns of macroinvertebrates on macroplastic and natural substrates based on the taxonomic and trait-based approach. Four experimental sites from minimally impacted upper reaches of the Buffalo, Kat, Kowie, and Swartkops Rivers in the Eastern Cape of South Africa were selected for the deployment of plastic substrates. Plastics materials, including polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles and natural substrate composed of stone and vegetation, were used to formulate three substrate groups: Group 1: 100% natural substrates (NS), Group 2: 50% natural substrates and 50% plastic material (NP), and Group 3: 100% plastic materials (PD). These substrates were placed in litter bags of equal dimension (25 cm by 35 cm, with 2.5 cm mesh) and deployed randomly in three hydraulic biotopes (pools, riffles, runs) over a period of 180 days (October 2021 to April 2022). A total of 216 substrate bags, 54 bags per substrate were deployed per site in the four experimental sites. Twelve bags from each substrate group were retrieved at an interval of 30 days beginning on day 30 after deployment, and analysed for the establishment of macroinvertebrate communities. Based on composite hydraulic biotope data, Simpson index was significantly higher (P < 0.05) for macroinvertebrate assemblage structure on the 50% and 100% macroplastic substrate groups compared to natural substrates. With the exception of Tabanidae, Glossosomatidae, and Psephenidae, all macroinvertebrate taxa recorded showed non-significant positive correlations with all three substrate groups. However, Tabanidae, Glossosomatidae, and Psephenidae showed significant positive correlation with the 100% natural substrates, 50% plastic substrates and 100% plastic substrates, respectively. The parsimony analysis reveal that, within 30 days, all substrate groups underwent similar succession, with high abundance of pioneer taxa which increased on days 60 and 90, and then decreased from days 120 to 180. For the the pool biotope, Shannon and Simpson indices were significantly higher (P < 0.05) for the macroinvertabrates collected over the natural substates compared with those collected on the macroplastic substrate groups. However, in the riffle and run biotopes, all diversity indices were similar for all substrate groups and no statistically significant difference was observed. Statistically significant higher values for taxonomic richness, diversity, and evenness were found on day 30 to 90 for the riffle biotopes, and day 30 to 60 for the run biotopes. The run biotope presented temporal statistical significant variability in taxonomic composition with different macroinvertebrate communities recorded on days 30 and 60 compared with days 90 to 180. However, in pools and riffles, no temporal variation was observed in the taxonomic composition of macroinvertebrates on all three substrate groups. The trait-based fuzzy correspondence analysis revealed differential spatial-temporal distribution of macroinvertebrate traits on all three substrate group. The early colonisers i.e. day 30 – 60, were dominated by group of taxa characterised by medium (>10 – 20 mm) and large (20 > 40) body size, flat body, collector-gatherers, free-living, and predators. The late colonisers, collected mainly on day 150 and 180 were dominated by taxa with a preference for high flow velocity (0.3 - 0.6 m/s), permanent attachment, and filter-feeding mode. Traits such as oval and flat body shape, medium body size (>10 - 20 mm), skating and clinging/climbing mobility, temporal attachment, shredders, predators, prey, and plastron and spiracle respiration showed positive correlation with the 100% macroplastic substrates. Filter feeding, crawling, permanent attachment, a preference for fast velocity (0.3-0.6 m/s), and coarse particle organic matter were positively correlated with the 50% macroplastic substrates. Overall, the results provided critical insights on the impact of macroplastics on the assemblage structure of biological communities by acting as suitable habitats in stream ecosystems. The study elucidated the role of traits of aquatic organisms in mediating the colonisation of plastics substrates, providing insights into the impact of plastics proliferation on riverine ecosystem functioning. The Role of the courts in the interpretation and implementation of the Right to Basic Education in Section 29(1)(a) of the South African Constitution

- Description: The right to education in section 29(1)(a) of the Constitution was meant to signal a break between an education system divided along racial lines, and a new democratic education system based on equity, equality, and opportunity for all learners. In reality, the South African education system still remains deeply divided along racial lines, with poor, mostly black learners, being under-resourced by the state, while their richer, mostly white, counterparts are being taught in schools that have access to all the resources necessary to realise the right to basic education. As a result, the right to education in section 29(1)(a) of the Constitution has been heavily debated, and between 2010 and 2022, the South African courts have often been called on to interpret the right. In the process, a rich jurisprudence has developed on the core content of the right to basic education, with findings by the courts that the right includes an entitlement to a number of educational resources. These include access to school infrastructure, learner-teacher support materials, desks and chairs, scholar transport, teaching and non-teaching staff, and nutrition. This study examines the way South African courts, between 2010 and 2022, have interpreted and implemented the right to basic education to give effect to section 29(1)(a) of the Constitution. While South African courts have historically shied away from interpreting socio-economic rights to contain a minimum core content and have rather opted for a reasonableness approach, the same is not entirely true for section 29(1)(a). As stated above, courts have been willing to find that the right entails a minimum basket of goods and services without which the right cannot be realised. By examining some of the most important education rights cases during this period, the study proposes that there are five factors that have guided the courts’ interpretation of the right and has assisted in the courts finding that the right contains a minimum core content. These factors are the historical context of the right to basic education; the textual formulation of the right to basic education in section 29(1)(a) of the Constitution; the interrelatedness of the right to basic education and other rights within the Bill of Rights; subsidiary education policies, legislation, and regulations, and lastly, the role of international law. This study seeks to consider the extent to which each of these factors have played a role in courts’ interpretation of section 29(1)(a). The uptake of educational technology in South African Higher Education: a study of the context that conditioned emergency remote teaching in the pandemic

- Description: The study explores the enablements and constraints in the uptake of educational technologies in the South African higher education system. This is a multiple institutional study which considers the differentiated nature of higher education institutions in South Africa and reflects on the implications of this for the use of educational technology (EdTech). EdTech is seen as an important aspect of 21st century education. As an established practice in many universities it has made a significant impact on teaching and learning practices. However, EdTech is often presented as a panacea to educational problems and implemented without consideration of the contexts in which it is used. Data was collected from the educational technology units of 22 of the 26 public higher education institutions and the main sources of this data were an online survey questionnaire related to the uptake of educational technologies and semi-structured interviews. For the research analysis, Archer’s analytical dualism and morphogenetic cycle provided a framework with the understanding that a social phenomenon such as EdTech emerges from a complex interplay of multiple mechanisms rather than through simple unidirectional causality. The framework directed me to analyse structure, culture and agency as separate entities allowing an understanding of the complex and rapidly growing phenomenon of EdTech. Analytical dualism provides guiding principles on how agential actions, structural resources, and cultural practices emerge and allows an understanding of how agents experience and respond to structures and cultures in social fields, for example, the uptake of EdTech for teaching and learning. The morphogenetic cycle reveals the historical nature the EdTech uptake with events happening over a period of time so that past events, which possess structural and cultural mechanisms, condition agency in socio-cultural interaction. The study identified several mechanisms enabling and constraining the uptake of EdTech, and while the findings are not exhaustive, they do indicate important enablements and constraints which the sector would do well to consider as it enters a post-pandemic phase. The data was collected prior to the pandemic and thus provides an understanding of what allowed for the uptake of EdTech when face-to-face teaching and learning was the norm. While the pandemic resulted in a rapid pivot to Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT), and fundamentally changed the face of EdTech in the South African higher education sector and around the world, the findings of this study remain pertinent. Archer argues that when a new person or structure is introduced, it occurs within a pre-existing context and so what emerges should not be seen to be simply caused by that new person or structure. Rather, its emergent properties are exercised within the conditioning effects of the pre-existing structures, cultures and agents. The Covid-19 virus brought about significant effects around the world, but it would be a mistake for us to assume that the effects were the same across different national higher education systems or even across different universities within a country. For us to understand both what occurred during the pivot to ERT and to consider the implications of this for the future of EdTech, it is imperative that we understand the pre-existing conditions in which ERT was implemented. This thesis offers a rich picture of these pre-existing conditions. Key findings include the extreme extent to which universities differed in their resourcing and uptake of EdTech prior to the pandemic. In some universities, there were well-resourced EdTech centres while in others, the implementation of EdTech was seen to be the responsibility of the IT department. Even where EdTech staff were employed, the nature of this employment varied greatly. In some cases, such staff were seen as educational experts who were hired as academics and often worked within academic development centres. In other cases, such staff were employed as administrative support staff. Another difference pertained to whether they were employed on contract (often funded through project funding) or on a permanent basis. These differences in employment and the positioning of the EdTech staff were seen to greatly condition the levels of credibility they enjoyed and the kinds of work they could undertake. If they were employed as support staff, they were more likely to be seen to be responsible for providing academics with end-user technical assistance. If they were employed as academics, they were more likely to be seen to be responsible for providing pedagogical and curriculum development support in using EdTech for teaching and learning. Another set of findings related to the extent to which EdTech was seen to be valued within each university, such as by being included in promotions criteria, mentioned in institutional strategies, and supported by university management. Where this was not the case, this constrained the uptake of EdTech. In all cases, the EdTech staff reported working almost exclusively with academics who sought to develop their EdTech capability on a voluntary basis because it aligned to what Archer terms their ‘personal projects’. At times a departmental champion, especially in the form of the Head of Department as a social actor, led to EdTech uptake spreading across the academic body. There was evidence of some resistance to the use of EdTech and a great deal of anxiety among some academics. This was seen to be implicated in concerns that at times EdTech was seen to be a ‘dumping ground’ and the Learning Management System positioned simply as a repository of materials. Many academics reported being pushed by their students to integrate more technology in their teaching. Many students seem to be adept at using technology and can see its potential pedagogical benefits and so placed pressure for this to be increased. There were however concerns that the notion of ‘Digital Natives’, that is millennial students who were born into a technological era, was only a partial picture of the student body. The ‘Digital Divide’ meant that there was highly uneven access to hardware, data, bandwidth, and technological literacies among the student body. For many students, their only access to technology was while they were physically on campus, a finding that was to have extreme implications for the pivot to ERT. This research will be valuable to the field of educational technology and enhance the understanding of what is needed to enable the uptake of educational technologies in higher education teaching and learning in pedagogically sound ways. - Description: Introduction and background: It is estimated that as many as 12.4 of every 1 000 live births in South Africa, are premature births. Prematurity is the leading cause of death in children under five years old. Furthermore, preterm infants have an increased risk of life-long morbidities. Globally at least 2.5 million premature infants die annually due to complications or lack of proper healthcare. Prematurity and the outcomes of its complications have raised concerns globally, as greater disparity is being seen between rich and poor countries. Lack of resources, poorly skilled health care professionals and poor management of small and pre-term babies, are areas of great concern in especially in poorer countries. Identifying the causes of prematurity will consequently not only help reduce the prevalence but more so the morbidity and mortality rates caused by preterm labour. It is therefore important to highlight and understand the consequences of such a high incidence in preterm births, when identifying these risk factors. Aims and objectives: The aim of the study was to identify which risk factors are associated with the cause of prematurity at Bisho Hospital, a district hospital in central Eastern Cape, South Africa. The objectives of the study were to identify which risk factors between the full-term and pre-term group were more prevalent and therefore associated with prematurity as well as identifying which risk factors could be prevented or even treated at Bisho Hospital. Methodology: A descriptive quantitative correlation study design was used, where premature as well as full-term infants were included in the study. Data was collected by means of a questionnaire. All accessible medical notes of both the mother and infant were used as well. The questionnaire was used to establish which risk factors were most prevalent during the pregnancies of women in each group and whether these risk factors were significant contributors to prematurity. Results: A sample of fifty mothers, with prematurely born babies were included in the study, along with eighty mothers who delivered full-term babies. The four main risk factors associated with pre-term birth within this study population was: a positive 6 HIV status (p=0.022), a poor maternal nutritional status (p=0.031), mothers living far distances from their local clinic (0.041-0.024) and mothers having previously delivered a pre-term baby (p=0.009). Discussion: The four major risk factors identified in this study have shown to have significant effects on pregnancy outcomes in other studies too. Modifiable risk factors such as a poor nutritional status can be identified and addressed as a preventative measurement for prematurity. While the other three risk factors are non-modifiable, mothers who are HIV positive, have previously had a premature baby and those who live farther than 5km (or a walk of 15-30 minutes long) away from their closest clinic, should be identified as a high risk for pre-term births in current pregnancies. While addressing these risk factors is important in attempting to reduce the prevalence of prematurity, improved care of small and premature babies could help combat the growing problem of early infant deaths within this same group. Recommendation: Financial investment and analysis of current policies in the prevention and management of premature delivery should be a priority. Ensuring health care workers are regularly trained as well as equipping nurseries with the basic resources to manage a pre-term baby, can help reduce mortality and morbidity associated with prematurity. , Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Health Sciences, 2022
