Bridging cultures in science education: leveraging lesson study approach for indigenous knowledge integration in a township school

- Description: The South African Curriculum Assessment and Policy Statement (CAPS) encourages science teachers to use culturally responsive pedagogies in their teaching. This should be done by integrating Indigenous Knowledge (IK) in science teaching to make it accessible and relevant to learners. However, the policy falls short of giving clear details on how this ought to be done. For instance, the school textbooks hardly contain any IK and there are few or no readily available teaching resources either. To complicate matters, many science teachers have not been trained on how to integrate IK into science teaching. As a result, most of them do not integrate any IK during their science lessons. It is against this backdrop that this study aimed to leverage the use of a Lesson Study approach when working with science teachers on how to integrate IK to mediate learning of the topics of waves and sound and redox reactions in a township school. Underpinned by the indigenous research and transformative paradigms, a qualitative case study approach in a form of participatory action research was adopted. Six science teachers from a township school, five Indigenous Knowledge Custodians1 (IKCs), one critical friend (isiXhosa and English teacher from the same school) and three university lecturers and a school principal from Zambia who conducted various workshops, and I were the participants in this study. Qualitative data was generated using interviews (semi-structured and stimulated recall interviews), document analysis, workshop discussions, observations (participatory and classroom observations) and journal reflections. Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, Shulman’s pedagogical content knowledge, specifically Topic-specific Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TSPCK) and Ogunniyi’s Contiguity Argumentation Theory (CAT) were used as complementary theoretical frameworks. A thematic approach to data analysis was employed to come up with sub-themes and themes. The main findings of the study revealed that through collaboration with Indigenous Knowledge Custodians and tapping into their cultural heritage the integration of IK into science lessons was possible. Thus, this study showed that leveraging the use of a Lesson Study approach when working with science teachers on how to integrate IK to mediate learning of the topics of waves and sound and redox reactions in a township school, shifted the science teachers’ Zone of Proximal Development and Pedagogical Content Knowledge positively. Also, this study revealed that the integration of IK promotes learner talk or argumentation. Moreover, the use of isiXhosa our home language proved to be an invaluable cultural tool for effective communication in this study. The study thus recommends that transformational professional learning communities (PLCs) be established in township schools and that teachers should work in collaboration with IKCs to learn about IK which could be integrated into other science topics. Furthermore, the study recommends that teachers should be trained in document analysis and how to use the TSPCK components to unpack the curriculum. This might help the teachers to understand the curriculum needs better, plan better, and hopefully teach better. Umzi ka Mama Family property transfer practices and the historical significance of title deeds to African female heads of household in Fingo Village: a participatory theatre approach

- Description: Many everyday stories and experiences of African women remain underrepresented and undocumented. For example, the omission of Fingo Village women’s names from official deeds records silenced their voices. African women faced gender and racial discrimination that denied them fundamental human rights and limited their participation in urban life. Title deed records constitute one type of public record where African women’s names were omitted for centuries by the colonial and apartheid governments. Under apartheid, African women occupied the social status of minors; hence, the government denied them urban land rights. This African feminist study enlists narratives of a sample of seven African female heads of households residing in Fingo Village who are also property owners. Fingo Village is an atypical environment where African people had a rare legal advantage of owning title deeds dating back to 1855. This study employed an interdisciplinary approach by mixing oral history methodology and applied theatre methods to record, interpret and present Fingo Village women’s narratives of family property inheritance and the significance of title deed documentation in the suburb. The multiple technique approach created opportunities for authentic dialogue between the researcher and the participants beyond the inherent limitations of public history oral interviews. The traditional oral history interview and the participatory theatre methods helped uncover unconventional practices in family property relations. Though customary transfers of family homes to custodians were prevalent, title deed registration of family property was also acknowledged as a vital practice that empowered women legally. The researcher used participatory theatre techniques inspired by playback, image and forum theatre to enhance the researcher and participants’ relationship. These methods encouraged the researcher and respondents’ shared authority as they embarked on an extended participatory research project. In this regard, through dialogical and performance-based activities, the participants and the researcher became co-creators of untold Fingo Village stories. Moreover, the theatre techniques became interpretation and analysis tools that ensured that the participants’ untold stories were well represented. The first phase of the research involved engaging with the literature about the title deeds history of Fingo Village and conducting oral history interviews that served as data. In the second phase, the interviews were analysed and packaged in a documentary format. The third phase was a playback theatre inspired session in a 10-minute performance based on themes from the participants’ filmed interviews. Additionally, the performance was a catalyst for forum theatre activities that allowed the participants to interact with the performer and suggest solutions to the dilemma posed by the performer regarding family property use. The participants were decision-makers and family property relations experts within this imagined context. In the fourth phase, the image theatre adaptation and memory work activities were essential tools. The tools aided the visuals and information from an existing Fingo Village exhibition as additional resources that prompted dialogue and discussions. The exhibition encouraged participants to share their personal experiences and memories of the Group Areas Act (GAA) era. The findings showed that the GAA era saw many families revert to communal tenure practices as a strategy to evade forced sales; as such, this gave rise to undocumented family property transfers. Additionally, the findings revealed that though customary practices are often patriarchal, there are circumstances favouring women as the preferred family property custodian. These are embedded in the social status of women who are traditional healers, firstborn daughters, and those from families with just daughters. This study contributes to the growing literature that advocates for positive representation of African women’s stories by using active research methodologies that strengthen partnerships and shared authority between the researcher and the public. This methodology could inspire other researchers to explore theatre techniques to create more profound and meaningful engagements with their participants. - Description: A series of core-functionalized borinic acids was synthesized from Grignard reagents and tributylborate and reacted with ethanolamine, amino acids, 2-pyridylmethanol as well as 2-(ethyl amino ethanol). Among the borinic acids synthesized were the ones bearing: para-(2, 15, 16, 22, 27)-methyl, (3, 20, 25)-chloro, (4, 23, 26)-fluoro, (5)-methoxy; meta-(7, 17)-methyl, (9)-fluoro; ortho-(6)-methyl, (8)-chloro, (10, 18, 19)-methoxy substituents on their respective aromatic systems. All compounds obtained by condensation of the borinic acids with the aforementioned nitrogen-containing substrates were characterized structurally by means of diffraction studies based on single crystals and found to constitute chelate esters/amides featuring covalent B-O and dative N→B bonds. A series of characteristic metrical parameters for the compounds in the solid state as well as typical NMR shifts for the chelate target molecules was established that allowed for the determination of the coordination induced shift. The carbon atom bonded to the oxygen atom shifted upfield, while the carbon atom bonded to the nitrogen atom shifted downfield. Factors mentioned in the literature that has an influence on the hydrolytic stability on the heterocyclic borinate motif have been taken into consideration and verified for the systems researched in this study. The substitution at the nitrogen atom with one ethyl group caused the greatest increases in the N→B bond length (27) 1.714 Å, due to the increase in the nitrogen Lewis basicity, making it the least hydrolytically stable, these include compounds (24-26). Furthermore, DFT calculations were performed by employing Becke’s three parameter hybrid exchange functional with Lee–Yang–Parr functional (B3LYP) method using the Gaussian 16 program package (Rev. B01) employing the basis set 6-311++G(d,p), to corroborate and correlate the experimental findings, which gave a general R-squared value of 0.9978 for calculated vs experimental 13C chemical shifts. Immunobiosensor technologies aimed to accomplish the highly sensitive, rapid and low-cost detection of TAAbs can improve the early-stage detection of lung cancer. Immunobiosensors for the detection of anti-P53-tumour associated autoantibodies have been developed in this work. The design of sensing interfaces with immobilized P53 protein (P53ag) as a sensing element layer on a solid interface was investigated. Several methods of detecting anti-P53-antibodies (anti-P53ab) were investigated. These methods are label-free detection using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and two label techniques. The label-free electrochemical techniques utilize gold electrode pre-modified with a conducting layer of electrochemically grafted phenylethylamine for covalent immobilization of P53ag. The limit of anti-P53ab detection with the label-free EIS was 103.0 pg.ml-1. The labeled technique developed utilizes fluorescent, and peroxidase-like nanomaterial labeled antibody as a detection probe. For the fluorescence detection, fluorescent silica nanoparticles were synthesized by overloading FITC into the silica matrix and conjugated to detection antibody (anti-IgG). The detection of the anti-P53ab was based on the dissolution of the silica nanoparticles to release the loaded dye as a signal amplification strategy. The fluorescence detection was carried out on a microplate, and magnetic bead modified P53-antigen platforms and limit of detection (LoD) were 42.0 fg.ml-1 and 3.3 fg.ml-1 for anti-P53ab; respectively. Fe3O4@SiNP-APTES-Au@Pd hybrid nanoparticles were synthesized, and their peroxidase-like activity and colorimetric detection were evaluated. The Fe3O4@SiNP-APTES-Au@Pd exhibited comparable activity to HRP. The Fe3O4@SiNP-APTES-Au@Pd was conjugated to protein-G-anti-IgG for the detection of anti-P53ab on a microplate and cellulose paper platforms. The LoD was 20.0 fg.ml-1 and 63.0 fg.ml-1 for the microplate and cellulose paper platform; respectively. The potential application of the designed immunobiosensor was evaluated in simulated serum samples. The developed sensors showed higher detection sensitivity, stability and had a lower detection limit for anti-P53ab when compared with the ELISA based detection. The results have provided alternative and effective quantification approaches to ELISA and a promising future for multiplexed detection of tumor-associated autoantibodies. The developed methodologies in this thesis could be applied for the detection of other autoantibodies in other cancer types and auto-immune diseases.

Municipal governance and the space for meaningful engagement: local government, citizenship and public participation in Amahlati and great Kei Municipalities

- Description: Since the dawn of democracy in 1994 and the subsequent adoption of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa in 1996, new forms of “wall to wall” municipalities were created throughout South Africa in 2000 and given a mandate of a local developmental sphere. The founding blocks of this was through the creation of the three spheres of government mechanism, namely national, provincial and local, each sphere of government was regarded as distinctive, interrelated and interdependent from one another. The local government sphere however has since mid-2000’s been marred by persistent service delivery protests throughout the country, in recent years the service delivery protests have been accompanied by violence and intimidation. The Eastern Cape Province has not been spared from this phenomenon, media reports, independent monitoring think tanks and yearly statistical results released by the South African Police Service (SAPS) through the ‘Gatherings Act’ indicates that service delivery protests in the province has been on an upward trend on yearly basis since the mid-2000’s. But much more detail is required in understanding the causes behind what are sometimes termed “civil unrest.” The thesis attempts to highlight trends regarding reasons for protest, methods of protest, and the profiling of areas where the protests occur. The findings would meaningfully contribute to the local government discourse and foster alternative mechanisms of engaging communities through better governance and development mechanism by local authorities. The ultimate goal is to create alternative solutions in addressing communities’ needs at local level for policy makers. Currently there is an existing gap in investigating service delivery protests especialy in rural municipalities, most of the municipal research findings and policies are predominantly urban oriented and are not tailor made in addressing rural community’s needs on governance and development. Although the South African Constitution makes provision on steps to be followed on governance and development at local level both vertical and horizontal integration, the Constitution is however silent on addressing governance and development needs of rural communities. As a result of this silence, rural municipalities are confined to develop policies that are not specific to their local needs. Hence the research was conducted in rural communities of Amahlathi and Great Kei municipalities respectively through mixed methods between quantitative and qualitative research. The thesis primarily sought to assess the actual nature and content of forms of engagement in the current public participation discourse at the two municipalities and perceptions thereof of communities on this matter. The information gathered in this research is intended to provide policy makers and those with interests on local government with a better understanding on the dynamics of public participation involvement and service delivery protests on rural based municipalities. The research also seeks to generate new information, insights and perspectives on service delivery protests in order to develop alternative strategies in addressing and minimising service delivery protests.
