The effects of household agricultural income on the adoption of electrical appliances and energy security among rural households in Mnquma Local Municipality

- Description: Energy security is critical to global economic development and agricultural activities. Electricity is one of the most beneficial types of energy for rural household livelihoods and smallholder producers in South Africa. This study aims to examine the effects of household agricultural income on the adoption of electrical appliances and energy security among agricultural households in Mnquma Local Municipality. The study employed primary data obtained from 224 households using simple random sampling technique across three electrification stages. Descriptive statistics, and binary logistic regression was used to determine the relationship between socio-economic and demographic characteristics of the household and the household agricultural income on the adoption of new electrical appliances and energy security across the three electrification stages. Descriptive statistics results indicated that non-electrified (67.1percent) and recently electrified (54.3percent) villages are dominated by female-headed households, while in electrified households there are more male head households (58.3percent). The results also show that among the households that have the highest total monthly income (greater than R15000), 34.5percent were electrified, 17.1 percent were recently electrified, and 4.3percent were non-electrified. The Binary logistic regression model's findings for the second objective revealed that household head factors such as age, monthly total household income, household size, and household agricultural income have significant effects on energy security. The study's findings revealed that household agricultural income has a significant impact at a 5 percent significant level on the adoption of electrical appliances. Binary logistic regression findings for the third objective revealed that on new electrical appliance adoption there was a significant effect of gender (at 5percent level), household size, energy security, and household agricultural income at a 1percent significance level. Binary logistic regression revealed that the coefficient of household size variable is positive and significant at a 1percent significant level on energy security and electrical appliance adoption. In this study, household agricultural income on the adoption of electrical appliances has been found to be the most critical factor influencing the energy security status of households among the selected rural households in Mnquma Local Municipality. As a result, policies must be put in place to facilitate access to electrical appliances through electrification programs, invention of affordable electric appliances, encourage participation in agricultural production and agricultural market access, that will provide households with social benefits. - Description: The words “concurrent jurisdiction” essentially means that there is more than one court which has the power to hear a matter and therefore, a party may choose which forum to approach.1 The High Court (hereinafter referred to as “HC”) may exercise jurisdiction, together with the Labour Court (hereinafter referred to as “LC”), in enforcing purely contractual and other common law claims as well as for breach of fundamental rights to which the Labour Relations Act (LRA)2 (or other labour statutes) do not give effect to.3 However, this is not without limitations. The HC and the LC have concurrent jurisdiction over claims relating to the lawfulness of dismissal or other conduct by the parties, whereas all claims based on fairness falls within the exclusive jurisdiction of the LC.4 The practical implication of the approach taken by the Constitutional Court (hereinafter referred to as “CC”)5 is that jurisdiction may, to a certain extent,6 be based on the pleadings, and a litigant may in fact have simultaneous claims arising from the same circumstances.7 However, where the basis of the action and the relief sought is clearly identifiable as being part of the machinery of the Labour Relations Act (hereinafter referred to as the “LRA”) or other labour legislation, then the HC will not have jurisdiction and it is up to the LC to remedy the wrong and give effect to the primary objects of the LRA , Thesis (LLM) -- Faculty of Law, Mercantile Law, 2021

- Description: The purpose of this study was to investigate parents’ and teachers’ perspectives towards the teaching and learning of intellectually impaired learners at Foundation Phase in Mthatha Education Sub-District. This study explored the lived experiences of parents and teachers of intellectually impaired learners in this special school. It determined parents’ and teachers’ understanding of intellectual disability, the challenges they face in working with such children and strategies they use to deal with intellectually challenged learners. The research was limited to one special school in Mthatha, which is the only special school in this sub-district. The study used the qualitative research approach in the form of case study research design. The sample consisted of twelve participants, four parents of learners who are intellectually impaired and eight Foundation Phase teachers in this special school. These are some of the findings: The Education White Paper 6 on building an inclusive education and training is effective even though it is moving slowly. There has been no preparation on how it should be implemented in terms of human and other resources, knowledge and skills on special needs education. The challenges teachers face in teaching learners who are intellectually impaired include: learner-teacher ratio that is not followed, hence overcrowded classes; classroom management; lack of learner support materials; no special curriculum designed for intellectually impaired learners; confining subject matter and teachers not participating in skills development. The mechanism that were suggested to assist learners who are intellectually impaired included: equipping teachers with skills necessary for learning and teaching of intellectually impaired learners, establishing institutional level support teams, making more learning and teaching resources available, providing qualified human resources, mobilizing public support, government understanding impairment and therapists being employed (psychologists, physicians, nurses, doctors and social workers). Some of the recommendations are: conducting workshops on effective coping strategies for teachers, public awareness campaigns in communities about intellectual disability, school governing bodies working with the government to supply the school with adequate learner support materials, proper infrastructure, School Based Support Teams support service, the District taking responsibility for establishing networks that promote effective communication between learners, teachers and parents as well as with non-governmental organizations and welfare, health and justice departments and Supporting teachers on site. , Thesis (M.Ed) -- Faculty of Education Sciences, 2019
