- Description: A large proportion of the human population, their settlements and socioeconomic activities occur on land directly adjacent to the coastline. The increased demand for coastal leisure and tourism has interfered with natural landscape features and their associated processes. The Cape St Francis/St Francis Bay peninsula located on the southeast coast of South Africa was rapidly developed and transformed from a little fishing village into an urban coastal developed area over a 50-year period (1961-2014). A system that once existed in a state of dynamic or non-equilibrium was interfered with through anthropogenic disturbances, resulting in more frequent and intense natural events, which ranged from floods to debris flows, decreased sand supply and resulting beach erosion. The aim of the project was to identify and map landscape features and changes on the peninsula using an interdisciplinary approach. The triangulated methods of a desktop study using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and media reviews, a crowdsourcing/participatory approach based on interviews, and a one year land surveying period of measurable field based surveys of physical features gave a well balanced view. The research showed that the natural landscape has been altered dramatically by settlement and associated infrastructure development. In particular, the loss of dunefields and the artificial modification of river paths were major impact areas. Beach erosion is a continual issue for the peninsula residents, particularly in St Francis Bay.

- Description: This project has been concerned with the application of the Baylis-Hillman methodology to the synthesis of medicinally important diketo acid analogues (cinnamate ester-AZT conjugates and 3-hydroxy ester-AZT conjugates) as dual-action HIV-1 IN/RT inhibitors; and on exploratory studies in the preparation of 3-(amidomethyl)-(1H)-2-quinolones as PR inhibitors; and (1H)-2- quinolone-AZT conjugates as dual action IN/RT inhibitors. A series of Baylis-Hillman adducts has been prepared, typically in moderate to excellent yield, by reacting 2-nitrobenzaldehyde with methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate and methyl vinyl ketone in the presence of 1,4- diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO). Subsequently, various transformations that include conjugate addition of primary and secondary amines to the α,ß-unsaturated moiety to obtain 2- (aminomethyl)-3-hydroxy-3-(2-nitrophenyl)propanoate derivatives, effective SN2´ substitution of the BH ß-hydroxy by a Vilsmeier-Haack in situ-generated chloride to afford Baylis-Hillman allyl chlorides, iron in acetic acid-catalyzed cyclisation to 3-acetoxymethyl-(1H)-2-quinolone derivatives were achieved. Thus, using the Baylis-Hillman methodology, two nuanced classes of diketo acid analogues were constructed. These involved conjugating appropriate propargylamine derivatives with AZT using the „click‟ reaction. In an exploratory study, the quinolone derivative, precisely 3-acetoxymethyl- (1H)-quinol-2-one, was transformed into 3-hydroxymethyl-(1H)-quinol-2-one using potassium carbonate in a mixture of methanol and water (1:1). Following successful hydrolysis, the resulting alcohol was transformed to the corresponding chloride, 3-chloromethyl-(1H)-quinol-2- one, using thionyl chloride. Subsequent nucleophilic substitution afforded 3-(aminomethyl)- (1H)-2-quinolone derivatives which were subsequently transformed to 3-(amidomethyl)-(1H)-2- quinolones; and 3-[(propargylamino)-methyl]-(1H)-quinol-2-one as precursors to quinolone- AZT derivatives. - Description: In 1994, racial domination in the form of apartheid ended in South Africa and the first postapartheid government was elected through a non-racial and democratic franchise. The new government inherited an entrenched system of racial inequality as well as widespread poverty amongst the formerly oppressed population, and it sought to address these challenges through policies of redistribution based on a new progressive constitution which emphasised the realisation of socio-economic rights. At the same time, and despite its redistributive measures, the post-apartheid government has pursued a macro-economic strategy with pronounced neoliberal dimensions. One of its critical redistributive measures focuses on social assistance to poor blacks, and this has entailed the construction and expansion of a massive social grant system including the child support grant which is received by millions of black South Africans on a monthly basis. The objective of this thesis is to examine and understand the livelihoods of child support grant recipients (or caregivers) in the context of conditions of extreme vulnerability marked by poverty. It does so by focusing on the small town of Riebeek East located in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Though undoubtedly child support grant caregivers are victims of poverty, the thesis demonstrates that they are not without agency. They exist in structural conditions of vulnerability and poverty, but they nevertheless seek to manoeuvre and negotiate their way in and through their conditions of existence. This does not necessarily alleviate their poverty in any significant manner but it does show evidence of reflexivity, decision-making and responsibility in the pursuit of livelihood practices and outcomes. In making this argument, I draw upon the mega-theory of Margaret Archer (specifically, her morphogenetic approach) and the more middle-level perspective of the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework. Beyond contributing to the prevailing academic literature on the child support grant in South Africa, this thesis also hopefully makes a small contribution to controversies about structure and agency within sociology.

- Description: To support current and emerging database applications, Object-Relational Database Management Systems (ORDBMS) provide mechanisms to extend the data storage capabilities and the functionality of the database with application-specific types and methods. Using these mechanisms, the database may contain user-defined data types, large objects (LOBs), external procedures, extensible indexing, query optimisation techniques and other features that are treated in the same way as built-in database features . The many extensibility options provided by the ORDBMS, however, raise several implementation challenges that are not always obvious. This thesis examines a few of the key challenges that arise when extending Oracle database with new functionality. To realise the potential of extensibility in Oracle, the thesis used the problem area of image retrieval as the main test domain. Current research efforts in image retrieval are lagging behind the required retrieval, but are continuously improving. As better retrieval techniques become available, it is important that they are integrated into the available database systems to facilitate improved retrieval. The thesis also reports on the practical experiences gained from integrating an extensible indexing scenario. Sample scenarios are integrated in Oracle9i database using the data cartridge mechanism, which allows Oracle database functionality to be extended with new functional components. The integration demonstrates how additional functionality may be effectively applied to both general and specialised domains in the database. It also reveals alternative design options that allow data cartridge developers, most of who are not database server experts, to extend the database. The thesis is concluded with some of the key observations and options that designers must consider when extending the database with new functionality. The main challenges for developers are the learning curve required to understand the data cartridge framework and the ability to adapt already developed code within the constraints of the data cartridge using the provided extensibility APls. - Description: The advancements in virtualization technologies have provided a large spectrum of computational approaches. Dedicated computations can be run on private environments (virtual machines), created within the same computer. Through capable APIs, this functionality is leveraged for the service we wish to implement; a computer power service (CPS). We target peer-to-peer systems for this service, to exploit the potential of aggregating computing resources. The concept of a P2P network is mostly known for its expanded usage in distributed networks for sharing resources like content files or real-time data. This study adds computing power to the list of shared resources by describing a suitable service composition. Taking into account the dynamic nature of the platform, this CPS provision is achieved using a self stabilizing clustering algorithm. So, the resulting system of our research is based around a hierarchical P2P architecture and offers end-to-end consideration of resource provisioning and reliability. We named this system μCloud and characterizes it as a self-provisioning cloud service platform. It is designed, implemented and presented in this dissertation. Eventually, we assessed our work by showing that μCloud succeeds in providing user-centric services using a P2P computing unit. - Description: Austroglanis gilli and A. barnardi are endemic to the Clanwilliam-Olifants System in the Western Cape, South Africa. The populations of each of these species are considered to be threatened by various anthropogenic activities, which include inappropriate agricultural practice and impacts of alien invasive fish species. The purpose of this thesis was to assess the life-history of these two endangered species in order to contribute to understanding their biology. Such information is vital for the development of strategies for their conservation. Marginal zone and marginal increment analyses from sectioned lapilliar otoliths of both A. gilli and A. barnardi showed a unimodal peak, suggesting a single annulus formation. The oldest specimens of A. gilli and A. barnardi were 12+ and 14+ years, respectively. The growth of A. gilli and A. barnardi was relatively slow and was best described by the von Bertalanffy growth curve as: L, = 131.56(1 - exp(- 0.27(t - 1.18 ))) for male and L, = 113.86(1 - exp(- 0.43(1- 0.74))) for female A. gilli from the Rondegat River. In the Noordhoeks River, growth was L, = 99.67(1 - exp(- 0.53(t - 0.35))) for male and L, = 96.60(1 - exp(- 0.64(t - 0.11 ))) for female A. gilli, and L, =71.02(1-exp(-0.26(1-3.07))) and L, = 69.50(1-exp(-0.36(1 - 1.88))) for male and female A. barnardi, respectively. The average natural mortality for the combined sexes was estimated using catch curve analysis at 0.37 ± 0.12 per year for A. gilli from the Rondegat River, and at 0.71 ± 0.05 and 0.39 ± 0.04 per year for A. gilli and A. barnardi from the Noordhoeks River, respectively. For A. gilli in the Rondegat River, the first maturity was estimated at 3.3 years (97.3 mm SL) for males and 3.1 years (94.3 mm SL) for females. In the Noordhoeks River, the first maturity for A. gilli was estimated at 2.0 years (71.9 mm SL) for males and 1.7 (66.4 mm SL) for females, and for A. barnardi at 2.0 (55.0 nun SL) for males and 2.9 years (58.9 mm SL) for females. Maturity corresponded closely to the asymptotic sizes from the von Bertalanffy curves, suggesting a shift in energy use from somatic growth to gonad development. Macroscopic assessment of the state of gonads, the Ganado-somatic index and histological examinations revealed that both A. gilli and A. barnardi have a single spawning season. The presence of oocytes in different stages of development in each of the ovaries of mature females collected between November and January suggested asynchronous, iteroperous serial spawning. The resorption of yolk was observed from ovaries collected between February and March and no vitellogenic oocyte was visible from ovaries collected between April and August. A similar trend was observed for males, with spermatozoa filling the lumen between November and January and some residual spermatozoa being present in the lumens soon after the breeding season. Spermatocytes and spermatids were dominant in the testes until October. An Index of Relative Importance revealed that A. gilli feeds predominantly on the benthic macroinvertebrate larvae of Ephemeroptera (particularly Baetidae), Diptera (particularly Chironomidae and Simuliidae) and Trichoptera. Austroglanis barnardi feeds predominantly on dipteran larvae (particularly Chironornidae and Simuliidae). Chi square contingency tables showed a significant difference in the dominant prey items of A. gilli and A. barnardi in the Noordhoeks River (X₂= 53.79, d.f. = 4, p > 0.001) and A. gilli between Rondegat and Noordhoeks rivers (x₂ = 34.74, d.f. = 4, p > 0.001). The Spearman's rank correlation test showed no shifts in the diet of A. barnardi from Noordhoeks River and A. gilli from Rondegat River with a change in size and season (p>O.OS). However, there was a shift in the diet of A. gilli from the Noordhoeks River which could suggest a distinct patchiness of benthic macroinvertebrates between the riffle feeding areas used by juveniles and other biotopes used by adults. The occurrence, in stomach contents, of other prey items from a wide variety of taxa and the presence of allochthonous material from the terrestrial environment could suggest an opportunistic feeding guild for both Austroglanis species. The life-history traits of A. gilli and A. barnardi, which are charaterized by slow growth, long life span and low relative fecundity, indicate that both species are relatively precocial and K-selected. The population of a precocial species is relatively stable and if population numbers were to be greatly reduced, they would require a long time to rebuild. An urgent conservation intervention is therefore recommended for Austroglanis spp. so as to maintain the diversity of populations within these species. The creation of protected river reserves and raising public conservation awareness may minimise activities that result in altered river hydrology and the destruction of complex benthic habitats.

Towards sustainable utilisation of the fishery resources of the Kowie Estuary, South Africa

- Description: The annual biomass of fish caught from estuaries in South Africa is currently estimated at over 24,800 tons. These estuarine fishes are caught by over 73,000 fishers, most of them recreational. Annual income derived from South Africa’s total estuarine fishery was worth approximately R430,000,000 in 1997. There is increasing concern that unless our estuarine fisheries are effectively managed, we will not be able to sustain these benefits into the future. Two factors that contribute to inadequate management of the estuarine fisheries in South Africa are a lack of data on which to base management decisions, and the lack of indicators by which to assess trends towards sustainability. The main aims of this study were to provide a description of the Kowie estuary fishery, identify suitable indicators of sustainability for this fishery, and assess its sustainability. Boat-based and shore-based roving creel surveys were carried out on the Kowie estuary between July 2000 and June 2001; 1,091 interviews were conducted with linefishers, and 277 interviews with bait collectors. In the boat-based interviews, data were collected on fisher demographics, fishing site, fishing method, choice of bait, fishing duration and catch statistics. In the shore-based surveys, additional data were collected from shore-based linefishers and bait collectors on their perceptions, attitudes, and knowledge of fishery regulations. Total annual fishing effort on the Kowie estuary was estimated at 30,952 angler hours (SD=154); 84% of it recreational, and the rest subsistence. Most fishing occurred during December and January, and decreased during winter, especially June and July. The annual yield of fish from the estuary was estimated at 16,240 fish (SD=667) or 5.99 tons (SD=0.81). By number, recreational anglers caught 69% of the annual catch. Three species dominated the catch by number: Rhabdosargus holubi (62%), Pomadasys commersonnii (17%) and Argyrosomus japonicus (7%). By mass, the dominant species caught were Argyrosomus japonicus (60%) and Pomadasys commersonnii (19%). Overall catch rate on the estuary was 0.57 fish.ang.⁻¹h⁻¹ (SD=0.24), or 0.298 kg ang.⁻¹h⁻¹ (SD=0.31). Overall catch rate by number was highest in the subsistence sector at 1.13 fish.ang.⁻¹h⁻¹(SD=0.70), while the boat-based recreational sector recorded the highest overall catch rate by mass (0.427 kg.ang.⁻¹h⁻¹, SD=0.625). Argyrosomus japonicus had the highest overall catch rate by mass on the estuary (0.496 kg ang.⁻¹h⁻¹), and Rhabdosargus holubi the highest overall catch rate by number (1.233 fish.ang.⁻¹h⁻¹). Only 19% of the catch of R. holubi was above the minimum legal size, while the estimates for P. commersonnii and A. japonicus were 21% and 25%, respectively. The annual number of bait collecting outings on the estuary was estimated at 2,889, of which 75% were subsistence. The highest numbers of bait collecting outings were recorded in December and April. The Bay of Biscay was the most popular site for bait collecting. A total of five invertebrate species were collected from the estuary to be used as bait, of which the mud prawn Upogebia africana was the dominant species. Total annual number of mud prawns collected from the estuary was estimated at 260,648; of which 41% was collected by subsistence bait collectors. Thirteen indicators were selected to assess sustainability in three fishery sectors on the Kowie estuary: namely, the shore-based recreational linefishery, the subsistence linefishery and the subsistence bait fishery. Social sustainability was evaluated on the basis of the use fishery resources to fulfil Maslow's basic human needs of food and employment, safety and security, affiliation, self-esteem and selfactualisation. Indicators of ecosystem sustainability assessed the productivity, diversity, disturbance and degree of water quality in the estuary. Institutional sustainability was assessed on the basis that management systems in the fishery should be results-oriented, consent-based, truth-seeking and adaptable. Data on indicator performance was collected during the shore-based roving creel survey, and from published literature. Arbitrarily set reference points were used to assess indicator performance, which was graded on a scale from 1 (indicating minimum probability of sustainability) to 4 (indicating maximum probability of sustainability). Sustainability was illustrated with the aid of amoeba plots. Overall sustainability was low in all three fishery sectors investigated. Nine of the 13 indicators in the shore-based recreational fishery performed poorly, while 11 of 13 in the subsistence line fishery, and 10 of 13 in the subsistence bait fishery, performed poorly. In all three fishery sectors all four selected indicators of institutional sustainability performed poorly. The probability of social sustainability was higher in the shore-based recreational line fishery, where the performance of two of the five selected indicators was very good. The probability of ecological sustainability was lowest in the shore-based recreational linefishery, while in the subsistence linefishery only one selected indicator performed very well. Recommendations made towards assessing sustainability in small-scale estuarine fisheries include the formulation of national policy for assessing sustainability in fisheries, the involvement of fishers in the assessment process, use of fisher perceptions where data gaps exist, and the use of research results to guide future management decisions. Management changes recommended for the Kowie estuary fishery include the formulation of an effective and integrated management plan, identification of the key stakeholders in the fishery, inclusion of fishers in management, the protection of the estuary’s Zostera capensis beds, and the establishment of a programme to increase research and monitoring in the fishery.

Biology and management of the Cape gurnard, Chelidonichthys capensis (Order Scorpaeniformes, Family Triglidae) in South Africa

- Description: The South African demersal trawl fishery, as with most trawl-directed fisheries worldwide, has a substantial bycatch component. With increasing commercial emphasis being placed on retained bycatch, an urgent need has arisen to investigate these species. In the past the bycatch component has received little research or management attention. Members of the gurnard family Triglidae make up up to 2.4 % of the South African hake-directed demersal catch and are thus considered an important bycatch species. The catch history and biology, including population structure, reproduction, feeding, age, growth and mortality, of the Cape gurnard, Chelidonichthys capensis, sampled from the Agulhas Bank, South Africa, were thus investigated. Males (mean TL = 366mm) were significantly smaller than females (mean TL = 411mm). The sex ratio was close to parity, males being more dominant in commercial trawls and less dominant in research trawls. Gonad maturation and gonadosomatic indices showed this species to have an extended spawning period with peaks in reproductive activity during September, January and April. First approximations of size at 50 % maturity were similar for females (349mm TL) and males (348mm TL) but differed significantly in terms of age (3.6 years and 4.6 years respectively). Otolith growth marks were validated as annuli using marginal zone analysis. The maximum age estimated was 16 years for a female of 675mm TL and recruitment to the commercial fishery was estimated as taking place in the fifth year of growth for both males and females. Gut content analysis showed C. capensis to be an opportunistic feeder preying preferentially on the benthic crustaceans Goneplax angulata and Mursia cristimanus. Landings from the commercial linefishery were insignificant whilst those for the commercial trawl fishery ranged from 500 tonnes to 3250 tonnes between 1984 to 1995, and indicated that this species forms an important component of the South African trawl fishery bycatch. A first approximation of fishing mortality (0.36 year⁻¹) for the inshore commercial trawl fishery was higher than that of natural mortality (0.25 year⁻¹) suggesting some fishing pressure on this species on the Agulhas Bank. However this fishing mortality value was significantly less than that for F₀·₁ (4.78 year⁻¹) that was estimated using a yield-per-recruit model.

- Description: The purpose of this research project was to explore the English communicative competency of management and supervisory level employees within the South Mrican hospitality industry. The Pro lit English Written Assessment, a competency-based assessment tool, was used to establish a relatively objective measure of the English communicative competency of nineteen managers and supervisors. Thereafter thirteen of these respondents were interviewed to determine their perceptions of their English communicative competency and the impact thereof on their work situation, as well as their perceptions of their learning needs and recommendations for intervention. The researcher selected a multi-method approach to the investigation and sought both quantitative and qualitative data. The assessment revealed that the English reading and writing ability of the respondents is distinctly lower than their recorded education level and inadequate in relation to the tasks they are expected to perform at work. The interviews indicated that the respondents are not aware of their lack of English communicative competency or the implications thereof. However, the respondents expressed important insights into the factors that should be taken into account when planning an educational intervention III an organization. These included the need to incorporate English second language learning principles, to treat the learner as an individual, to involve the learner in the decision-making process, to consider the practical concerns of the learner and to ensure that the programme content is appropriate. Recommendations for human resource practices and research in the hospitality industry are presented.

- Description: In tropical areas, the high rainfall induces severe-and pervasive weathering, producing a thick soil cover. The lithologies underneath may b~ recognised using geochemical mapping, which is based on certain elements that have the ability to differentiate between various lithologic units. Elements that are independent of the weathering process are normally selected for this purpose. The chemistry of mobility of base metals is an important factor to take into account when evaluating the mobility and distribution of these elements in a soil profile. Factors such as pH, Eh, organic material, clay minerals, Fe and Mn oxides are normally key aspects to be considered. When iron-rich rocks undergo deep weathering, lateritic profiles are developed. These are widespread in a belt bordering the equatorial zone, including the Brazilian shield, West and East Africa, parts of India and Northern Australia. In these profiles, the high rainfall promotes intense leaching of the different horizons. Where the pre-existing profiles are mostly preserved, the base metals are distributed throughout the profile: in the upper ferruginous horizon, goethite and hematite can adsorb large amounts of Mo, resulting in large dispersion halo. Other base metals such as Cu and Zn are less resistant in these freely-drained profiles and, therefore, they may be partly leached from the profile. In the lower horizons, Cu, ,zn, Ni and Co are retained, hosted in kaolinite and smectite, and thus, a high geochemical contrast will be identified in this horizon at the expense of a decline in the size of the dispersion haloes. The pre-existing profiles can be truncated, with a thin stone line developing at the contact between the lateritic profile and the recent soil. The conditions in these environments favour the retention of most of the pathfinder and target elements in all soil horizons, with the B horizon showing the highest contrast. If the primary rock is rich in AI, a bauxitic profile will be developed. The world distribution of bauxites closely resembles that of laterites. The behaviour of Co and Ni is very similar to that of iron during the bauxitization. Furthermore, the factors that induce residual enrichment of Al with removal of Fe in the soil profile will cause significant depletion of Co and Ni in these profiles. These metals are then concentrated at the base of the profile because of precipitation from downward percolating solutions. Many karst bauxite deposits in Southern Europe are enriched with Ni and Co in the basal horizon. Such horizon is mined as nickel ore in the bauxites of the Lokris region in Greece. Copper and molybdenum are strongly enriched.in bauxitic profiles. Concentration ratios are 8 and 3.2 for Cu and Mo respectively. Molybdenum is closely related to goethite and hematite, and therefore, the high concentration of Mo in a bauxitic profile will be consistent with the horizon where iron is concentrated. Copper concentrates at the base of the iron rich-horizon but also appears enriched in the saprolite together with Co. When sulphide bodies occur, in this environment, deep and penetrative weathering has resulted in considerable near-surface mobilization of iron and silica. The supergene alteration commonly obscures the identity of the primary sulphides at the surface. In this case, geochemical assessment of the resulting gossan has proved to be crucial in mineral exploration. A search in the secondary mineral assemblage, volatile and precious metals may lead to the information on the composition of the primary sulphide assemblage. The conclusion that will be reached is that if the geochemical properties (mobility, affinities with Fe or Mn oxides and/or clay minerals) of each of the base metals are understood, an appropriate sampling (optimum size-depth combination) will then be done. In such cases, a subdued, weak, but significant, geochemical response will be identified in the surface horizon.

It hosts a significant amount of gold mineralization and just over 1000 kg of gold have been produced from Its various reefs and secondary deposits. The greenstone belt is interpreted as an Archean ophiolite complex. It comprlses a volcano-sedimentary succession (the Pletersburg Group) which Is subdivided Into a basal greenstone sequence, interpreted as oceanic crust, and an upper sedimentary cover sequence. A number of major shear zones, which are thought to represent thrusts that developed during the subduction of the greenstone sequence, form an integral part of the stratigraphy . Four stages of deformation (D₁-D₄) and four phases of metamorphism (H₁-H₄) (three of which are correlatable with the peak stages of deformation) are recognized. The primary gold deposits are all shear zones related. but they are subdivided into greenstone, sedimentation and granIte-hosted types. Geographically, they occur In three distinct goldfields: Eerstellng, Roodepoort and Marbastad. The greenstone-hosted · Plenaar-Doreen shear complex Is In the Eersteiing goldfield and hosts eight gold occurrences. Within the complex, Girlie North Reef is the 640m-long "pay" section of the Girlie North shear zone. This reef is characterized, macroscopically, by a Quartz-carbonate-chlorite-sulphlde assemblage and, mlcroscoplcally, by the presence of tourmaline, arsenopyrlte and Au. Geochemical evidence Indicates that mineralizing fluids were H₂O and CO₂-bearing and rich In S, K and Al. The wall rock alteratlon was Isochemlcal but Is manifest as a change In mineralogy from a hornblende + plagioclase assemblage to an actlnollte/tremollte + Quartz + clay assemblage. This Is best developed In the hangIng wall of the reef and is thought to have been caused by hydrogen ion metasomatism. The Arsenopyrite Reef was one of the main sediment-hosted shear zone gold producers In the Harabastad goldfield. This reef Is Interpreted as the basal margin of a shear zone whose top contact Is probably represented by the Quartz Vein Reef. The shear zone consists predomonantly of quartz and carbonate, and the two "pay" reefs are characterized by tourmallne. arsenopyrite and Au. These magmatiC fluids were channelled up shear zones whIch had already been mineralized with a quartz-carbonate-chlorlte - sulphide assemblage by previous metamorphic fluidS. generated during the dynamic (D₂-related) H₂-phase of metamorphism. The development of a method for the determination of microgram amounts of magnesium by atomic absorption

- Description: This thesis includes a description of modifications of the Hilger atomic absorption apparatus, which was used for most of the work. These modifications were restricted to the atomiser and burner, which were replaced by a modified "Eel" flame. photometer atomiser-burner and resulted in improved sensitivity and instrumental stability for the atomic absorption of magnesium. A comparison of the performance of this unit with that of the unmodified Hilger apparatus is given. A "Handigas" butane-propane mixture)-air flame was used for most of this work, but a coal-gas-air flame was also studied and found to give slightly greater sensitivity. The method was found to be subject to interference from many elements. Strontium salts, employed as releasing agents to overcome the effect of other elements, were not completely effective as milligram amounts of several elements interfered even when strontium was present. Among the more serious interfering elements are: aluminium, iron, manganese and zirconium (less than 20 p.p.m. interfere); the alkali and alkaline earth metal salts (more than 200-500 p.p.m. interfere); phosphate (more than 100 p.p.m. P₂0₅ uranium (more than 4,000 p.p.m.); arsenate and vanadate. An attempt is made to explain the mechanism of some of these interfering effects. A combination of strontium salt and acetyl acetone was found to over-come the effects of small amounts of several elements that form complexes with acetyl acetone (e.g. iron and aluminium) far more effectively than strontium alone. Larger amounts of many interfering elements are removed by a solvent extraction procedure employing acetyl acetone and chloroform. Elements which cannot be removed by this means may be separated by anion-exchange, volatilisation, electrolysis or precipitation. A spiking technique, which compensates JT/GB for the effects of small amounts of interfering elements, is described and enables many samples to be analysed without prior separations. The method described has good sensitivity (the limit of determination is approximately 1 microgram of magnesium in 50 ml. of solution). It has been applied to the analysis of clay samples, iron ore, limestone and uranium metal, oxides and processing solutions. The coefficient of variation of the method was determined using two clay samples and results of 2.0 and 4.6 percent, at magnesium oxide concentrations of 0.65 and 0.22 percent respectively, wore obtained. The speed of the method compares favourably with others described for the determination of microgram amounts of magnesium, but increases if large amounts of interfering elements are present.
