- Description: The Department of Basic Education (DBE) examiners’ diagnostic reports for 2012-2019 indicate that National Senior Certificate (NSC) learners mostly perform poorly in examination questions based on scientific investigations. The low performance by learners in these questions has been attributed to the failure by teachers to effectively mediate the learning of scientific concepts due to lack of science laboratories or poorly resourced laboratories in most rural schools. As a result, most learners are finding that scientific concepts are decontextualized and hence abstract. Thus, this study explored making use of Virtual Lab to mediate learning of scientific investigations using the topic Energy transformations. The study was located within an interpretive paradigm and a qualitative case study approach was employed. The study was conducted in four different rural schools in the Joe Gqabi district and seven Grade 11 Life Sciences teachers participated. Data was generated using semi-structured questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, lesson observation, workshop discussions, and journal reflections. The study was informed by Vygotsky’s (1978) Socio-Cultural Theory (SCT) as the theoretical framework, and Thompson and Mishra’s (2006) Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) as the analytical framework. The results of this study showed that most educators have a positive predisposition towards the integration of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in their practice. The study found that using the Virtual Lab to teach Life Sciences has several benefits such as safe environment for conducting experiments; convenience and accessibility; positive teacher and learner attitudes and improvement on learner performance; elimination of physical limitations of a real lab; and availability top-class lab equipment and up-to-date reagents. The study also revealed some shortcomings that were associated with the use of the Virtual Lab. These are; lack of lab partner and peer-learning; and lack of direct supervision by a more knowledgeable facilitator. This study concluded that using the Virtual Lab enhances the quality of teaching scientific experiments in the selected under-resourced rural secondary schools. The study recommends the adoption of the Virtual Lab as a viable alternative to the conventional lab.

Perceptions of the sugar-sweetened beverage tax in South Africa: a comparative study

- Description: This exploratory, comparative study aimed to investigate perceptions of the participants in the study in South Africa regarding the tax on sugar-sweetened beverages. The study further aimed to compare these perceptions with perceptions identified in selected foreign jurisdictions that have levied the tax on sugar-sweetened beverages. A voluntary, paper-based, anonymous survey questionnaire that included both closed- and open-ended questions was selected as the primary method of data collection. This questionnaire was administered to post-graduate Bachelor of Commerce Accounting and Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting students, aged twenty-one years and older, studying at three residential universities in South Africa, during the 2018 academic year. An extensive analysis of literature available on sugar-sweetened beverage taxes, both locally and internationally, was conducted. The two main constructs (construct 1: perception of the sugar-sweetened beverage tax and the price of sugar-sweetened beverages and construct 2: the social impact of the sugarsweetened beverage tax) were then analysed using descriptive statistics. This study found that there is a significant association between gender and perception that the sugary beverage levy will be beneficial to health, with female perceptions of the benefit of the sugary beverage levy being greater than that of males. Respondents appear to have a positive perception of the sugary beverages levy, understand the sugary beverage levy, as well as the health benefits that will be derived from the levy. Respondents supported the tax on sugar-sweetened beverages if the revenue generated was used to improve the health care system and if the price of healthy foods decreased. Female respondents were found to drink fewer sugarsweetened beverages than male respondents, but females reported higher sugar-sweetened beverage consumption during stressful periods. The current study can possibly provide policy makers with more information regarding acceptance of the sugar-sweetened beverage tax and shape guidelines for future amendments of the tax imposed.

- Description: The Zambezi area in north-western Zambia is underlain by Neoproterozoic Katanga Supergroup and older, Archean to Mesoproterozoic Basement Supergroup rocks. The area lies within the Domes Region, which is a structural domain of the Lufilian Arc. The stratigraphic succession within Zambezi area is dominated by the Grand Conglomerate Formation (GC) and Mwashia Group which are the most extensive units, and the less abundant Lower and Upper Roan Groups of the Katanga Supergroup. They wrap around the domal Basement Supergroup units. The mineral assemblage of the Mwashia and the GC schists commonly contains garnet, anthophyllite and biotite. GC rocks show remnants of primary structures such as clasts and sedimentary features. Anthophyllite, garnet and biotite are the dominant Mg-Fe rich metamorphic minerals. However, these are iron rich for each mineral phase and has been attributed to iron rich protoliths. The earliest recognised deformation episode (D1) formed NE-SW S1 foliations within GC which is consistent with the regional structural trend in the western Lufilian Arc. S1 was later affected by D2 that generated downward facing F2 folds and S2 foliations. The other associated feature to D2 is garnet that grew as the result of pro-grade metamorphism. The D3 deformation fabric is not developed and did not affect much of the structural geometry of the Zambezi area. The peak assemblages of the Basement Supergroup and the Katanga Supergroup formed at mid-amphibolite facies conditions of 590 °C and 630 °C at an average pressure of 4.0 kbar. The Basement Supergroup has undergone retrograde metamorphism to greenschist facies condition indicated by presence of chlorite and also determined by biotite-anorthite isopleth in THERIAK DOMINO. At the eastern part of Zambezi area, the Katanga Supergroup rocks were retrogressed in the upper greenschist facies at about ~470°C and ~4.0 kbar due to isobaric cooling.

- Description: Background and aim: Flight attendants forms a significant part in 24-hour aviation industry. Flight attendant fatigue is a significant problem in the aviation industry as it continues to jeopardize the ability to fulfil important safety and security roles which is critical in performance duty of a flight attendant. However, little attention has been accomplished to the workload, working conditions and fatigue of flight attendants crew in transport aircraft. In addition, there is currently less research that have also embraced the problematic of smaller regional/commercial operation (short-haul flight operations) inducing fatigue among short-haul flight attendants as the nature of this operation are often characterised with high productivity expectations in a demanding environment with high time pressures resulting in high workloads and fatigue. Thus, flight attendant fatigue and workload is a worldwide challenge in this operational environment and less attention has been given to the determining factors. Therefore, the aim of the study was to determine the workload factors contributing to flight attendant fatigue during short-haul flight operations. Methods (System analysis): To achieve the research aim, the work system analysis, based on the Smith and Carayon-Sainfort model was chosen as the main research approach which was conducted in two ways; based on existing literature and secondly based on expert interviews. This method provided a systemic aspect to understand the whole work system of flight attendants work during short-haul operations in order to identify all the contributing factors to flight attendant fatigue and workload. Results: The literature analysis and the data from the expert interviews highlighted significant findings to flight attendant fatigue and workload. The reasons for flight attendant fatigue operating short-haul flights can be found at organizational, task, individual, environmental levels and tools and technologies and due to the interaction of the factors. The main factors of flight attendants’ fatigue are thought primarily as a function of scheduling due to irregular, mixed schedules with early starts and late finishes, extended duty days (long working hours), as well as high workload, due to the short turnaround flights, the number of sectors flown in a single duty period and duty length and high jobs demands. In addition, flight duty and rest regulations, confined work space in the cabin, vibrations, noise and lighting, sleeping in an unfamiliar environment, family responsibilities all add to additional stress placed on the body which can influence workload and sleep and consequently influencing fatigue. Conclusion: Overall the study determined that flight attendant fatigue is a significant problem in modern industry of short-haul operations. Using this systematic approach (work system analysis based on the framework of the work system model developed by Smith and Carayon-Sainfort (1989) allowed for an accurate representation of the complexity of flight attendant work environment in short-haul aviation industries, thus contributed to an increased understanding of fatigue and risk factors that span the entire work system and aid in identifying the patterns in combination of work system variables that are associated with increased risk to flight attendant fatigue. Overall flight attendant fatigue is a product of interactions with the short-haul environment. It can have a negative impact on safety, performance and well-being. Therefore, it needs to be managed and dealt with in the near future.

- Description: Breweries are major consumers of water and produce nutrient rich wastewater. Therefore, it is important to research technologies that optimise the reuse and recycling of this waste. This study compared different constructed wetlands (CWs) in terms of their potential for cleaning brewery effluent and simultaneously producing crops Beta vulgaris and fish Oreochromis mossambicus. Filling and draining times (FDT; 15 min, 30 min and 60 min) in tidal CWs were compared in Experiment 1. The 15 min FDT (6.52 ± 0.09 mg/l) and 30 min FDT (5.74 ± 0.09 mg/l) had higher dissolved oxygen (DO) than the 60 min FDT (5.40 ± 0.09 mg/l; p<0.05). This resulted in the 15 and 30 min FDT treatments reaching ammonia effluent discharge standards sooner than the 60 min FDT. Total plant harvest increased with increasing FDT; therefore, 15 min FDT was used as the FDT in tidal treatments in the following experiments. The aerated CW (5.81 ± 0.07 mg/l) and tidal CW (5.67 ± 0.07 mg/l) treatments had higher DO concentrations than the unaerated CW treatment (3.76 ± 0.07 mg/l; p<0.05) in Experiment 2. This resulted in lower ammonia concentrations on day 5 in the aerated and tidal CWs compared with the unaerated treatment (p<0.05). The tidal CW (23.97 ± 2.57 kg) had a total harvest that was approximately four times higher than the unaerated CW (p<0.05), which had the highest frequency of chlorosis and plant mortality; and was unable to treat ammonia to discharge standards. In Experiment 3, the aerated and tidal CW were compared with municipal-water as water sources for aquaculture. There were no differences in fish growth (p > 0.05). However, there were differences in water quality; with the municipal treatment having the lowest pH, EC and nitrate concentration (p<0.05); but all water quality parameters remained in a range suitably for fish production. Due to the tidal CW having the highest plant harvest and lowest frequency of chlorosis and mortality; it was the most suitable CW technology to clean the brewery effluent, and to produce B. vulgaris and water that could be used downstream in aquaculture.

The study was conducted in the offices of Amathole District Municipality (ADM) in the Eastern Cape Province, including the cooperative project in Alice as one of the projects that was coordinated by the ADM. Concerning the research design and methodology, a qualitative research design was used. The data collection process involved conducting unstructured interviews with the officers from the Amathole District Municipality office (the ADM officers / the municipality officers) and the members of cooperative projects (cooperatives/projects). Mainly, an ethnographic approach was used; it involved embracing participant observation in the ADM offices for approximately 6 months. As the researcher, I participated as one of the ADM’s officers in different activities, namely: attending meetings and one workshop, and accompanying the development officer while conducting an observation of various projects in Butterworth. The findings in the study disclose that the disjuncture between policy planning and implementation may be attributed to 4 factors, which are associated with the ADM office as the development agency for the Amathole region. These are: the incapability to respond to policy implementation complexities, failure to exploit policy implementation complexities as learning opportunities, the insufficient understanding of ‘process monitoring’ as a tool that could be integrated in projects management, as well as the execution of policy implementation in the absence of policy documents as a guide in implementation processes. Moreover, these factors are examined as being related to each other, and they will be discussed in detail in the course of the thesis.

- Description: The new science and technology framework has challenged higher education institutions in South Africa to create research partnerships with industry, to contribute to growing a national system of innovation. Through detailed case studies, this monograph explores how one new organisational form typical of the knowledge society, the network, is currently being created in practice, in all its complex and contingent reality, in three high technology fields. It is the third volume in the Working Partnerships: Higher Education, Industry and Innovation series. The case studies show that knowledge networks are primarily shaped by the competitive dynamics of the industrial sub-sector within which partner enterprises operate, intersecting with the levels of scientific and managerial expertise within higher education partner institutions, and facilitated by government policy steering mechanisms and intermediary partners. The intersection of interests gives all partners a stake in the research project at the heart of the knowledge network, and builds the levels of trust required to succeed. The analysis highlights some of the possibilities and constraints evident in the current policy context, suggesting that state attempts to steer the system need to be more nuanced and targeted, informed by the specificity of sectoral dynamics, and it suggests that universities need to identify their own strategic solutions to develop a flexible and adaptive institutional approach to networks.

- Description: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is on the increase globally, with further increases expected in developing countries, such as South Africa. World Health Organization (Medical Chronicle, 2006:14) estimations indicate that the number of DM sufferers will double over the next 30 years. This increasing number of diabetics is expected to have enormous economical implications. One of the consequences of the increase in DM sufferers is the increase in deaths due to diabetes related complications. In 2000, 3.2 million people died of DM and diabetes related complications compared with 3 million who died from HIV/AIDS related illnesses (William & Pickup, 2004:64). Health services are financially burdened by DM complications that result in heavy demands in both direct costs of hospitalization and medication as well as indirect costs such as manpower of staff involved in the care of the patient (Leuner, 2000:410). Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a prominent life-threatening complication of type 1 diabetes mellitus and, if not treated medically, it can lead to coma and death. DKA accounts for 14 per cent of all diabetic related hospital admissions and has a mortality rate of 5 to 10 per cent (Pickup & Williams, 2003:1). Rapid identification of DKA is necessary to improve patient care. George- Gray and Chernecky (2002:96) suggest patient outcomes are affected by the nurse’s ability to recognize the clinical features of DKA. It is important, therefore, for the nurses to understand the signs and symptoms and treatment of this diabetes related complication. National health policies and treatment guidelines should be aimed at addressing DKA treatment through setting guidelines for diabetic care (Peters, 2004:22). The main goal of this study was to determine registered nurses’ knowledge of DKA and to develop guidelines to assist registered nurses in providing adequate and effective health care to prevent DKA reoccurrence. The research study is based pm Bergam’s model on quality of care and accountability. Bergman claims that several preconditions must be filled in order to be accountable, including: • Accountability • Responsibility • Authority • Ability (Bergman (1982:8) emphasizes that ability reflects the registered nurses’ accountability, which is composed of values, knowledge and skills.) The study was divided into two phases. Phase one determined registered nurses’ knowledge related to the management of DKA. Phase two of the study included the developing guidelines to assist registered nurses in providing adequate and effective health care to patients with DKA. The design of the study is quantitative, explorative, descriptive and contextual; a survey was performed using a questionnaire based on a literature study. Ethical principals were maintained throughout the study. Permission to the study was sought from the Local Health Authorities and the heads of department where the research was undertaken. Findings of the research were analysed and discussed in the research. The knowledge of the majority of the respondents was found to be average. Out of the thirty- two respondents 52.8 percent possessed adequate knowledge the management of DKA and 63.4 percent possessed adequate knowledge on the management of DM. Two recommendations to assist registered nurses in the implementation of guidelines of the recommendations were also provided.

- Description: This thesis is grounded in the theoretical discourses of art therapy and transpersonal psychology. The focus is on a single session of claywork, where a sculpture was made and discussed, leading to an understanding of some of the sculptor's central psychological issues. The overall aim of the research was to examine different hermeneutic perspectives on art therapy with clay sculpture in terms of how well they open up and do justice to the experience of the sculptor and the nature of the overall process. Within this there are two particular goals: Firstly, to examine the extent to which the holographic paradigm in comparison to other perspectives, allows a deeper access to, and deeper understanding of, transpersonal themes and processes; and secondly, to examine the extent to which processes within claywork can be understood as ritual activities. The research was a phenomenological-hermeneutic case study. The session was reduced to a narrative synopsis, and then a hermeneutically grounded thematic analysis was carried out using the theory of Transpersonal Feminism (Knight, 1997) and Schema-Focused Cognitive Therapy (young, 1990, 1994). The principal conclusions reached were that the holographic paradigm does add to our understanding of the experiences (personal and transpersonal) of the claywork, often beyond the scope of other art therapy perspectives. The image of the shaman is used as a metaphor for understanding the process of healing described within the holographic paradigm. Within the healing process, ritual plays an important role in the meaningful therapeutic activity of art therapy. The claywork expresses that the transpersonal struggle with archetypal forces within the collective unconscious is reflected on a personal level through individual conflicts and dilemmas within the personal unconscious. Indeed, these difficulties are viewed on both levels as 'stepping stones' on the path of spiritual development described by Engler (1984) and Welwood (1986).
