- Description: The aim of the study was to investigate the implementation of the Back-to-Basics (B2B) programme in Raymond Mhlaba Municipality. The study used qualitative research design and data was collected using in-depth interviews. The finding of the study revealed that the municipality was able to sufficiently implement the appropriate B2B programme in the community areas. Moreover, the findings identified corruption and mismanagement of funds, improper understanding of the municipality’s IDP and the roles of different government departments, poor communication skills between the municipality ward councillors and the community members, as well as poor service delivery as some of the challenges faced by Raymond Mhlaba Municipality in implementing the Back-To-Basics programmes. Importantly, in respective community areas, the findings revealed that water crises, empty promises and unrealistic/fake promises are some of the negative impacts the community members experienced during the implementation of the B2B programme, which brought little growth and development to the communities. Besides, the findings revealed that the implementation of this programme created employment opportunities for the unemployed youths in the communities. The study, however, concluded that the municipality is not doing enough in the implementation of B2B programme as many communities still complain of poor service delivery. Hence, for effectiveness in the implementation of B2B programme, it is important that the municipality delegates powers to the ward councillors. Furthermore, municipality management needs to refrain from making empty promises to the communities, they must be honest and deliver qualitative services to communities. However, community members should show signs of appreciation to all municipal activities, as well be supportive and ii show lots of interest and willingness attending the municipality’s manifestoes. Finally, the municipality management should ensure transparency, effective communication with the community members, provision of good service delivery, fulfilment of promises, honesty, proper budgetary allocation and spending, effective monitoring and evaluation of the municipal officials, as well as avoiding of nepotism in awarding tenders for the purpose of achieving a smooth running of the municipality.

Carbon and nutrient storage of the Swartkops Estuary salt marsh and seagrass habitats

- Description: Coastal wetlands play an important role in filtering nutrient contaminants from water bodies and are also effective carbon sinks. These systems are known as blue carbon ecosystems. Blue carbon is defined as the carbon stored and sequestered by coastal vegetated habitats such as seagrasses, salt marsh and mangroves. These habitats are being lost on a global scale due to climate change and other anthropogenic pressures. Quantifying ecosystem services provided by these habitats may lead to better conservation and restoration strategies. Research on this topic has escalated over the past decade but there are no published studies in South Africa. The aim of this study was to quantify the carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus stocks in the above and below ground tissues of Zostera capensis, Spartina maritima, and Salicornia tegetaria — a seagrass, salt marsh grass, and salt marsh succulent. This was done in both summer and winter to understand the variability of carbon and nutrient storage. The organic carbon stock of the sediment beneath these three species was also quantified. Results showed that S. maritima, S. tegetaria, and Z. capensis stored 16 ± 2.9 Mg C. ha-1, 4.3 ± 0.7 Mg C. ha-1, and 2.1 ± 0.5 Mg C. ha-1 in their respective biomass, and 247 ± 48 Mg C. ha-1, 212 ± 44 Mg C. ha-1, and 224 ± 38 Mg C. ha-1 respectively in the sediment beneath these habitats. This was determined by elemental analysis and the loss on ignition method (LOI). The sediment made up the dominant carbon pool in the estuary and there was very little seasonal variation, however spatial variation was evident. The sediment carbon stocks were similar to the global mean for salt marsh (255 Mg C. ha-1) and greater than the global mean for seagrass (108 Mg C. ha-1). The Swartkops Estuary stored a total (biomass and sediment carbon combined) of 14 094 Mg C in the Z. capensis area of 62 ha, 25 286 Mg C in the S. maritima area of 96 ha, and 5 916 Mg C in the S. tegetaria, covering an area of 27 ha. This is significantly less than what has been found globally in estuaries, but this is largely due to the smaller area cover of these macrophytes. The amount of carbon stored per hectare is much larger in this South African system than in many international studies — possibly due to the high levels of pollution coming into the system. Nitrogen and phosphorus stocks in the plants fluctuated seasonally in relation to the nutrient input to the estuary, with the greatest stocks found in winter in Z. capensis, S. maritima, and S. tegetaria (0.42 ± 0.03 Mg N. ha-1, 1.6 ± 0.13 Mg N. ha-1, and 0.37 ± 0.02 Mg N. ha-1, respectively; and 0.4 ± 0.03 Mg P. ha-1, 1.2 ± 0.10 Mg P. ha-1 in Z. capensis and S. maritima respectively) because nutrient inputs to the system were highest in winter, however the P stocks in S. tegetaria were greatest in summer (0.35 ± 0.04 Mg P. ha-1). The reason for this difference is because of their ability to store phosphorus better than nitrogen and for longer periods of time due to luxury uptake. Salicornia tegetaria N and P stocks were also lower than the other two species, possibly due to its placement along the intertidal gradient, as it is not tidally inundated for as long as the other two species. The Z. capensis and S. maritima at Site 1 showed extremely high amounts of nitrogen in their tissues (105.3 ± 1.6 g kg-1 and 74.91 ± 4.1 g kg-1 respectively). This is due to the area being a depositional site as it was an old oyster farm and experiences little tidal flushing from the sea despite its proximity to the mouth. Nutrient ratios and N: biomass were determined as an indication of nutrient pollution. The N: biomass was low in both seasons in Z. capensis, S. maritima, and S. tegetaria (0.08, 0.02, 0.04 respectively) indicating consistant eutrophic conditions in the estuary. Plant biomass was a better indicator of nutrient pollution than epiphytes which were very low in the Swartkops Estuary and did not prove as a useful indicator of nutrient enrichment. These results can inform local management plans of the ecosystem service potential of these species and how they should be protected for future and current sustainable use as filters for nutrient pollution to keep the water quality in a better state. It also outlines the current state of blue carbon and nutrient stocks in an urban South African estuary.

Evaluating Livestock Development Programmes through the Production Risk Interface: Case of the Kaonafatso ya Dikgomo (KyD) Scheme in South Africa

- Description: Livestock is significant in the livelihoods of the rural poor, providing a plethora of benefits. Livestock Development Programmes (LDPs) can transform smallholder farmers’ production for increased production and poverty reduction. The Kaonafatso ya Dikgomo (KyD) Scheme is a LDP implemented in South Africa with the aim of assisting smallholder farmers to attain economic and sustainable beef production. The literature shows that most evaluations of LDPs have been quantitative based on measurable and quantifiable metrics. Furthermore, various socio-economic and institutional factors have a bearing on the decision to participate in LDPs and eventually adopting the practices. Impact assessments of LDPs have been devoid of risk consideration as well as ascertaining how risk introduced by participating in LDPs has impacted productivity. The overall objective of the study was therefore to evaluate LDPs, focussing on benefits, participation and risk. The specific objectives of the study entailed developing a conceptual tool for measuring the qualitative and secondary benefits. Secondly, it was to determine factors influencing participation decisions in the KyD Scheme. Thirdly, the study sought to measure and compare calving rate and off-take rate risk between KyD Scheme participants and non-participants. Lastly, the study highlighted the variability (risk) introduced by participating in a LDP and its impact on production. The study utilised a cross-sectional survey of KyD Scheme participants and nonparticipants in KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and Eastern Cape Provinces of South Africa. Non-probability convenience sampling method was utilised in selecting a sample of 164 KyD Scheme participants and 81 non-participants. A semi-structured questionnaire was the data collection tool utilised. A conceptual “Livelihood Effect Benefit Index”; Probit, Tobit and Ordered Probit models; Just and Pope Production function; Propensity Score Matching; and Monte Carlo Simulations were utilised to analyse data. Statistical Package for Social Scientists version 24, STATA 13 and @Risk Decision Tool were the analytical packages utilised in analysing the data. The study found that the Scheme provided low qualitative benefits, mainly through social capital. Furthermore, socio-economic and institutional factors have significant impact on the decision to participate in the Scheme, extent of participation and decision to continue practicing Scheme experiences. In comparing the two groups of Scheme and Scheme non-participants, calving and off-take risk for KyD Scheme participants was lower than that of Scheme non-participants. In comparing individuals with similar characteristics between the two groups, Scheme participants reduced calving risk whilst increasing the off-take risk. Page | vi The study concluded that the Scheme exhibited low qualitative benefits. Furthermore, the decisions to participate and the extent of participation in the KyD Scheme were influenced by various socio-economic and institutional factors, which were however more favourable to resource endowed smallholder farmers. In addition, the Scheme had significant impact on production risk. The risk reducing determinants appeared to also favour more resource endowed smallholder farmers who had more farming experience. The study’s recommendations were subdivided into short term, medium term and long term. The short term recommendations included targeting farmers within a distance of between 30km and 90km from a formal market, promoting dipping services-based training and extension, and providing information and training concerning calving i.e. animal health, husbandry and breed selection for herd maximization. Participation in the Scheme and the extent of participation can be improved through enhancing awareness of the Scheme at various points where stock feed are available to farmers. Furthermore, enhanced cooperation with extension workers provides a conduit in improving awareness of the Scheme and enhancing participation. The medium term recommendations pertained to initiatives such as promoting other livelihood options to enhance benefits of the programme, and promoting social capital enhancing initiatives such as mentoring and providing social capital objectives that can be integrated into the overall livestock sector strategy. The long-term recommendations include initiatives such as subsidizing increase in herd size to between 50 and 120 cattle, maintaining a monthly frequency of farmer-extension contact of between 2 and 5 times per month, as well as incorporating calving and off-take risk in policy formulation, implementation and evaluation

- Description: Domestic violence and abuse also known as Gender-based violence (GBV) including rape, mutilation, murder and sexual abuse, is a profound health problem for women across the globe. Although domestic violence and sexual abuse is a significant cause of female morbidity and mortality, it is almost never seen as a public health issue. Domestic violence and abuse can happen to anyone of any race, age, sexual orientation, religion or gender. This study draws attention on exploring victim’s narrative perspectives on domestic violence and abuse against women in East London at Masimanyane Women’s Support Centre (MWSC) in Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The study employed a qualitative research approach, with In-Depth Interviews (IDI), Focus Group Discussions (FDGs), and review of related literature for data collection. The findings of this study were based only from participants who were victims of domestic violence and abuse, as some of the views were stated by visitors. This resulted in some situations where the witnesses of domestic violence and abuse, just like victims themselves did not want to report their incidents. Women may not reveal that they are suffering from domestic violence and abuse, as they fear of the image that they may be portraying about themselves and their family as a whole like social pressure and stigma of defamation. Although domestic abuse and violence increases all the time women are encouraged to open up on such cases about abuse. Real change in these cases can only be brought by changing the mind-set of society through education and better law enforcement. This study was anchored by both the Social Learning Theory and Feminist Theory. Upon recommendations, this study has seen that there should be government interventions and programs that help victims of domestic violence and abuse and also to work in a way of preventing the domestic violence and abuse.

This study made use of qualitative research method. Five focus group discussions and nine interviews were successfully conducted. In each focus group discussions, both the academic and administrative employees were presented. The nine interviews conducted consisted of senior management only. The aim of this study was to ascertain the role of effective communication on employee performance and service delivery at Ingwe TVET College. Findings of this study suggest that there are communication challenges at Ingwe TVET College such as lack of communication policy, ineffective communication methods, and perceptual barriers. Some of the recommendations of this study suggest that Ingwe TVET College should develop and implement a communication policy and that there should be marketing and communications department to develop communication strategies of the organisation under study. The recommended suggestions will help to improve communication challenges, and enhance employee performance and service delivery at Ingwe TVET College.

- Description: The world education system is faced with many challenges. Learners’ performance in mathematics in particular is one of the main areas of concern. Over decades, Mathematics has become an indispensable tool in the march towards technological breakthrough. The use of Mathematics reveals how people deal with their various private, social, and civil lives. The indispensable implications of Mathematics in the society made it to become a compulsory subject in the primary and secondary education in most countries of the world. Nevertheless, despite its wide application of Mathematics in the society, there are still many learners particularly in secondary schools who struggle to achieve the best knowledge of Mathematics. As applicable to most countries of the world, the performance of learner in South Africa is not encouraging. For example, the performance of Grade 9 learners, Pinetown Education District in particular, is not improving. Attitude is one major factor identified among learners that gravely affects learner’s performance in Mathematics. The study adopted qualitative approach which is rooted in interpretive paradigm to frame and focus the study. Interpretive paradigm is consistent with the assumption that experience of the world is subjective and best understood in terms of individuals’ subjective meanings rather than the researcher’s objective definitions. The sample included 15 participants (which include three Mathematics educators and twelve Grade nine learners) selected purposefully across three secondary schools, with attitudes and performance as inclusion criteria. Data were obtained through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews conducted with the selected Mathematics educators and learners of the selected schools to obtain their views on the impact of the attitudes of Grade nine learners on their performances in the subject. The study found that the learners perceived difficulty in Mathematics because of the information that was passed to them through their parents or guardians, seniors and peers who have negative attitudes towards Mathematics; their previous performances at early grades; the nature of Mathematics itself; and that learners were not well prepared from primary schools. It was also indicated that many learners have negative attitude towards Mathematics whose behaviours in the classroom affected others who would have loved to enjoy Mathematics. The study also revealed that all stakeholders (the educators, school managements, policy makers and parents) have part to play in motivating the learners to engage more in Mathematics. Also the study found that qualified educators who will develop good and friendly classroom environment, employing a highly interactive teaching method and as well giving adequate homework and assignments to the learners are needed to teach Mathematics in secondary schools. The study revealed that learning resources are not made available to the learners. There study therefore potentially provides that, educators can help mould the learners with negative preset mind about Mathematics through their classroom behaviours. The study further provides that learning materials such as textbooks and other geometry tools be made available for the learners use at home. The study also, provides that consideration be given to Mathematics class in the morning hours. The study concluded by giving general recommendations for improving learners’ participation and attitudes towards learning Mathematics.

Developing an attractant for monitoring fruit-feeding moths in citrus orchards

- Description: Fruit-piercing moths are a sporadic pest of citrus, especially in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, where the adults can cause significant damage in outbreak years. Currently the only way in which to successfully control fruit-feeding moths within the orchards is the use of repellent lights. However, growers confuse fruit-piercing moths with fruit-sucking moths that don‘t cause primary damage, and there is no way of monitoring which moth species are attacking the fruit in the orchards during the night. In a previous study, banana was shown to be the most attractive bait for a variety of fruit-feeding moth species. Therefore the aim of this study was to determine the population dynamics of fruit-feeding moths develop a cost-effective alternative to the use of fresh banana as a bait for fruit-piercing moths. Fresh banana was compared to nine alternative synthetic attractants, frozen banana and a control under field conditions in several orchards in the Eastern Cape Province. Once again, banana was shown to be the most attractive bait. Some 23 species of fruit-feeding moth species were sampled in the traps, but there was only two fruit-piercing species, Serrodes partita (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and Eudocima sp. Surprisingly S. partita, which was thought to be the main pest, comprised only 6.9% of trap catches. Serrodes partita, is a sporadic pest, only becoming problematic every five to 10 years after good rainfall in the Little Karoo region that causes flushes of their larval host, wild plum, Pappea capensis (Ecklon and Zeyher). During these outbreaks, damage to fruit can range from 70 to 90% and this is especially so for soft skinned citrus. A study on the morphology of the proboscis confirmed that only two species of fruit-piercing moths were present. Trap catches over three citrus growing seasons was linked to fruit damage found within several orchards. Once again fruit-piercing moth damage was relatively low in comparison to other types of damage such as mechanical and undefined damage. There was a very weak correlation between S. partita trap catches and damage, but generally damage was recorded two to three weeks after a peak in S. partita trap catches. Climatic conditions were also recorded and compared to weekly trap catches of S. partita, and while temperature and wind direction had no influence on moth populations, precipitation in the orchards was weakly correlated with trap catches. This study has shown that in non-outbreak seasons, the main fruit-piercing moth, S. partita comprises a small percentage of fruit-feeding moths in citrus orchards, but that growers are unable to determine the difference between fruit-piercing species and the harmless fruit-sucking species. Further fresh banana remains the best method for attracting fruit-piecing moths to traps, but this is not cost effective and thus a commercially viable protocol for monitoring these species remains elusive.

- Description: Animal behaviour is especially sensitive to environmental variability and prey availability during the breeding season, and this is particularly true for non-volant, central place foragers such as the endangered African Penguin (Spheniscus demersus). Individual sex and morphology, as well as the level of assortment within mated pairs can influence both the behaviour and the reproductive success of species exhibiting biparental care. This study made use of a large biometric database and nest attendance video footage to determine the influence of intrinsic (assortative mating, brood size and chick age) and extrinsic (environmental conditions, anthropic disturbance) factors on breeding behaviour and performance of African Penguins on Bird Island, Algoa Bay, during peak breeding (March - July) in 2013. While sexual dimorphism in African Penguins is subtle, the colony-specific discriminant functions presented here provide an accurate sexing tool when only bill and flipper length are available. Despite the premise that selection of a large, high-quality mate in this longlived, monogamous seabird governs lifetime fitness, only low levels of assortative mating were found, and this only for earlier breeders, when larger females (but not males) bred. The 2013 season was a particularly successful one, coinciding with above-average sardine and anchovy abundance, and almost 80 percent of monitored nests were double-brooded, with very low levels of mortality. A- and B-chicks of double broods and singleton chicks grew at similar rates and exhibited similar body condition indices. In these conditions, chick developmental rates were independent of parental size, assortment or provisioning behaviour. Females raising a double brood were significantly lighter and in poorer body condition than those raising a single chick, although the same trend was not evident in males. Offspring sex ratio in 2013 (2.27:1) favoured male chicks, suggesting that there is potential to over-produce the larger sex when resources are plentiful. Peak nest arrival and departure times of parents did not change over the course of monitored breeding attempts (March-June), nor were they different for disturbed and undisturbed nests or for a single or double brood. The increase in CCTV-observed provisioning rate as chicks grew larger was best explained by brood size, at-sea chlorophyll a concentration, and maximum air temperature, but was unrelated to parental morphology or assortative index. Importantly, parental absenteeism commenced earlier and was markedly greater in nests frequently handled by researchers than in undisturbed nests. Both the time spent together by parents, and absenteeism were measurably affected by maximum afternoon air temperatures, the effects of which are expected to be exacerbated by poorer foraging conditions and climate change. A third of manually-monitored nests shared chick-guarding duties unequally, although this phenomenon was independent of parental sex or morphology. The adaptive benefits of mating patterns and division of labour during chick-rearing may only become apparent in a year of below-average food availability and it is highly recommended that this study be repeated in a year of scarce food resources. These findings augment past foraging ecology studies and demonstrate that investigator disturbance and environmental conditions can affect the nesting behaviour of this highly threatened seabird.

- Description: The Namibian government’s language policy for schools has opted for English as the official language of education. But the use of English in Namibian schools has nevertheless presented certain challenges. Although the Ministry of Education has chosen English as the language of instruction from upper primary (Grade 4) up to the tertiary level, it has been found that English proficiency is poor among both learners and teachers. It is against this backdrop that this study sought to investigate how Grade 7 Natural Science teachers mediate learning through code-switching from English to Silozi in the Zambezi Region of Namibia. The study explored Natural Science teachers’ perceptions and experiences of code-switching, how they and their learners make sense of concepts in science classes when code-switching is applied, and lastly, how code-switching from English to Silozi enables or constrains learning in Natural Science classes. The main question is: How do Grade 7 Natural Science teachers mediate learning through code-switching from English to Silozi? A qualitative case study underpinned by an interpretive paradigm was carried out at Zebra School (pseudonym) in the Zambezi Region of Namibia with two participant teachers. My unit of analysis was mediation of learning through code-switching, and data were obtained from lesson observations, questionnaires, interviews and document analysis. A variety of data gathering technique was employed for triangulation purposes to enhance the validity and trustworthiness of the data. During the data analysis process, data were grouped into common themes and subsequently organized into analytical statements in relation to the research questions. It was found that code-switching was widely employed in Grade 7 Natural Science classes in the Zambezi Region. It was also found that teachers code-switch to help learners understand the subject content, to explain concepts, to emphasize points and to include learners’ participation in the subject. The findings also revealed that some few teachers were against code-switching because examinations are written in English and the language policy does not recommend code-switching. Notwithstanding this, since the majority of teachers do code-switch to support their learners’ understanding in science classes, I recommend that education curriculum planners should include code-switching in the curriculum guidelines, and that the practice should be officially acknowledged as a legitimate strategy for teachers.

- Description: Mobile Commerce (MC) can be defined as any transaction carried out over a wireless network, using a wireless device, such as a mobile phone, and that has monetary value (Wang and Liao, 2007). MC is a rapidly developing industry in tenns of its technological capabilities. With these increasing developments, come greater forecasts of potential benefits to societies, economies, industries and individuals. However, the growth and development ofthe underlying MC technology, has not been met by the creation and adoption of the services meant to accompany MC. It is said that the success of MC will ultimately lie in its services. As MC Service Providers (MCSP) are responsible for delivering these MC Services (MCS), the success ofMC can be said to rest on them. In order for MCSs to be successfully adopted, both the initial use and continuous use thereof should be targeted. In other words those that have used MCSs (users) and those that have yet to use MCSs (non-users) should be targeted. It is thus pivotal that an understanding of the factors that generate MCS adoption be sought. This research purposed to uncover the factors that generate MCS adoption within the user and nonuser group. In defining successful adoption ofMCS's, two separate measures were used for each group. User satisfaction is a well accepted construct among researchers for measuring system success among users. User satisfaction is also accepted to be a detenninant of service re-use and loyalty. Intention to use is a measure used for MC success among non-users and is accepted to be a detenninant of actual use. Factors affecting both detenninants, user satisfaction and intention to use, were investigated. After a review ofliterature and current models, ten (10) factors were hypothesised to be significant factors in determining user satisfaction and intention to use namely: ease of use, cost, speed, personalisation, pennission, privacy, security, convenience, relationship (with MCSP) and awareness. A questionnaire was developed to test the hypothesised factors. Not all factors were proven to have a significant impact on both user satisfactions and intention to use. One main recommendation is that both initial and continuous adoption should be the focus ofMC strategy. Services that cater to specific user needs and offer convenience at a low cost should be offered. MCSPs can use the factors proved to be significant to generate and evaluate their service offering, to users and non users, to increase the probability of successful adoption from initial to continuous use. The research concludes that MCSPs need to begin to offer MCSs that meet user needs and add value to their lives in order to realise the professed potential ofMC.

- Description: This thesis provides a detailed consideration of the family in Shakespeare’s canon and the engagement therewith in three South African novels: Hill of Fools (1976) by R. L. Peteni, My Son’s Story (1990) by Nadine Gordimer, and Disgrace (1999) by J. M. Coetzee. The study is divided into an introduction, three chapters each addressing one of the South African novels and its relationship with a Shakespeare text or texts, and a conclusion. The introductory chapter provides an analysis of the two strands of criticism in which the thesis is situated – studies of the family in Shakespeare and studies of appropriations of Shakespeare – and discusses the ways in which these two strands may be combined through a detailed discussion of the presence of power dynamics in the relationship between parent and child in all of the texts considered. The three chapters each contextualise the South African text and provide detailed discussions of the family dynamics within the relevant texts, with particular reference to questions of authority and autonomy. The focus in each chapter is determined by the nature of the intertextual relationship between the South African novel and the Shakespearean text being discussed. Thus, the first chapter, “The Dissolution of Familial Structures in Hill of Fools” considers power dynamics in the family as an inherent part of the Romeo and Juliet genre, of which William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is but a part. Similarly, the impact of a socio-political identity, and the secrecy it necessitates, is the focus of the second chapter, “Fathers, Sons and Legacy in My Son’s Story” as is the role of Shakespeare and literature within South Africa. These concerns are connected to the novel’s use of Shakespeare’s Sonnets, King Lear, and Hamlet. In the third chapter, “Reclaiming Agency through the Daughter in Disgrace and The Tempest”, I expand on Laurence Wright’s argument that Disgrace is an engagement with The Tempest and consider ways in which the altered power dynamic between father and daughter results in the reconciliation of the father figure with society. Identification of novel marine algal compounds with differential anti-cancer activity: towards a cancer stem-cell specific chemotherapy

- Description: Breast cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related death in women worldwide. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that the treatment-resistant ER-PR-HER2/neu- sub-type is more common among women of African descent, necessitating the search for novel chemotherapies for this form of the disease. The secondary metabolites produced by marine algae represent a rich source of structurally unique compounds with chemotherapeutic potential, particularly in South Africa, whose oceans allegedly host 15 % of the total number of species in the world. Indeed, a recent study reported the isolation of a range of novel compounds from South African red and brown algae of the Plocamium, Portiera and Sargassum genera which displayed cytotoxicity against oesophageal cancer cells in vitro. The molecular mechanisms mediating this toxicity were unknown, as was the effect of these and similar compounds on metastatic ER-PR-HER2/neu- breast cancer cell lines or breast cancer stem cells. The current study aimed to address these questions by screening a library of twenty-two novel marine algal compounds for the ability to inhibit MDA-MB-231 and Hs578T breast cancer cells, while having no adverse effects on non-cancerous MCF12A breast epithelial cells. While twelve of these were toxic in the micromolar range against breast cancer cells, only the polyhalogenated monoterpenes RU004 and RU007, and the tetraprenylated quinone sargaquinoic acid (SQA) were identified as hit compounds based on the criteria that their cytotoxicity was specific to breast cancer and not healthy breast cells in vitro. On the other hand, the halogenated monoterpene RU015 was found to be highly toxic to both breast cancer and non-cancerous breast cell lines, while the halogenated monoterpene stereoisomers RU017 and RU018 were non-toxic to either of these cell lines. The mode of action of RU004, RU007, RU015 and SQA, together with the previously characterized carotenoid fucoxanthin (FXN), was assessed in terms of the type of cell death induced and the effect on cell cycle distribution of these compounds. Flow cytometric analysis of the extent of Hoescht 33342 and propidium iodide staining along with PARP cleavage studies suggested that SQA induced apoptosis in MDA-MB-231 cells. On the other hand, the highly toxic compound RU015 appeared to induce necrosis as evidenced by 50 kDa PARP cleavage product in MDA-MB-231 cells. The flow cytometry profiles of MDA-MB-231 and Hst578T cells treated with the hit compounds RU004 and RU007 were suggestive of the induction of apoptosis by these compounds. Cell cycle analysis by flow cytometry with propidium iodide staining revealed that both SQA and FXN induced G0-G1 arrest together with an increase in the apoptotic sub-G0 population, which agreed with previous reports in the literature. The molecular mechanism of action of SQA and FXN were further investigated by the identification of specific signal transducer molecules involved in mediating their anti-cancer activities. SQA was found to require the activity of numerous caspases, including caspase-3, -6, -8, -9, -10 and -13, for its cytotoxicity and was demonstrated to decrease the level of the antiapoptotic protein Bcl-2. On the other hand, FXN was shown to require caspase-1, -2, -3, -9 and - 10 for its toxicity. This, together with the ability to decrease the levels of Bcl-2, pointed to the involvement of the intrinsic pathway in particular in mediating the activity of FXN. The screening of algal compounds against non-cancerous breast epithelial cells carried out in this study, together with the investigation into their mechanisms of action, represent one of the few reports in which characterization of algal metabolites goes beyond the initial cytotoxicity assays. Finally, in order to assess the potential anti-cancer stem cell activity of the marine algal compounds, a subset of these was screened using a mammosphere assay technique developed in this study. The cancer stem cell (CSC) theory proposes that cancers arise from and are maintained by a specific subpopulation of cells able to undergo asymmetric cell division and termed CSCs. These CSCs are capable of anchorage-independent growth in serum-free culture conditions, such as those in the mammosphere assay. Using this assay, the novel halogenated monoterpene stereoisomers RU017 and RU018 were demonstrated to possess putative anti- CSC activity as evidenced by their ability to completely eliminate mammosphere formation in vitro. Furthermore, since RU017 and RU018 were non-toxic to both breast cancer and healthy breast cells, it appeared that the activity of the compounds was potentially specific to the CSCs. The results require further validation, but represent the first report of selective anti-CSC activity.

- Description: Changes in assessment practice in education are a global issue. Colleges of Education in Namibia also need to accommodate these changes in their training programs for student teachers, to model their practice of all modes of assessment in teaching and learning. Emphasis should be placed on assessment for learning, which is formative in nature. This qualitative case study investigated the following questions: How do teacher educators understand the principles and strategies of formative assessment and how do teacher educators implement formative assessment in their own teaching, which in turn serves as an example to their student teachers. I used three methods of collecting data: interviews, observation and document analysis. The data identify a range of findings in the teacher educators' professed understanding of formative assessment and how it is implemented in their own practice. The data also identify challenges facing the teacher educators in terms of setting a good example to their student teachers in the area of formative assessment. This study also offers suggestions for further studies on formative assessment. These include a suggestion for teacher educators to look at their own practice of formative assessment principles and strategies. A major cross department study could be conducted that includes teacher educators from different subject areas to see to how the implementation of formative assessment in the college varies from one department to another. A third possibility suggests a study involving student teachers from various areas of specialization in the college to see to what extent the implementation of formative assessment in the college affects their future assessment practices.

- Description: The current study examines the extent and magnitude by which global and regional shocks are transmitted to the volatility of returns in the stock markets of South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, Botswana, Mauritius and Egypt. This is done so as to make inferences on the level of the domestic market‟s integration into the regional and world capital markets. By applying multivariate and univariate GARCH models, using weekly data from June 1995 to May 2010, the main empirical findings are threefold. Firstly, the volatility analytical framework finds statistically significant and time-varying volatility spillover effects from the regional and global markets to the South African market. Global shocks are generally stronger and account for up to 23.9 percent of the volatility of South Africa‟s equity market compared to weaker regional factors which account for less than 1 percent of domestic variance. Only in countries with strong bilateral trade and economic links with South Africa, such as Botswana and Namibia, is it found that regional factors are more dominant than global factors for domestic volatility. Compared to the other African markets, the joint influence of foreign shocks on domestic volatility is highest in South Africa and Egypt, two of Africa‟s largest and most developed markets. The results further demonstrate that for all the African markets the explanatory power of both regional and global factors for domestic volatility is not constant over time and tends to increase during turbulent market periods. Secondly, the analysis of the determinants of South frica‟s second moment linkages with the global market suggests that the volatility of the exchange rate plays a cardinal role in influencing the magnitude by which global shocks affect domestic volatility. The increased global integration in the second moments cannot be attributed to either increased trade integration, convergence in inflation rates or to convergence in interest rates between South Africa and the global markets. Lastly, tests were conducted to examine whether there have been contagion effects from the regional and global markets to South Africa from the 1997 Asian crisis and the 2007/8 global financial crisis. The results show no evidence of contagion during either the East Asian currency crisis or the recent global financial crisis to South Africa, while some African markets, such as Egypt, Mauritius and Botswana, exhibit contagion effects from either crisis. Overall, the empirical findings generally support the view that African markets are segmented both at the regional and global levels as domestic volatility is more influenced by local idiosyncratic shocks (the proportion not attributable to either global and regional factors). However, the volatility of South Africa, and to a lesser extent Egypt, remains relatively more open to global influence. This implies that the potential for gains from international portfolio diversification and the scope for success of policies aimed at the stabilisation of equity markets in these markets exist.

- Description: This thesis looks at language as the medium of all our ideas and sentiments. The thesis represents a position statement regarding the development of isiZulu as an academic language. The field of Economics is used to merely illustrate and support the points that are being made in this work. It is argued that each language is viewed as the means of expression of the cultural heritage of its people, and it remains a reflection of cultural groups who speak that particular language. It is a fact that indigenous African Languages have been, for obvious reasons, blatantly understudied during the apartheid years in South Africa (Rudwick 2004). Languages have market value and the desirability of English as the most important global language today has an effect in most Black learners in South Africa. The study examined the development of indigenous African languages, isiZulu in particular, in Zululand University where ninety percent of students and lecturers are isiZulu first language speakers, and came to a conclusion that there is an urgent need for Black South African students to learn academic subjects through their mother tongues. This would help them in thorough understanding and interpretation of analytic text presented in a foreign language such as English. The study advocates that isiZulu, which is the mother-tongue of many students at the University of Zululand, should be a language for upward mobility to these students, but as the situation stands, isiZulu becomes a neglected or marginalised language since it is not the normal medium of instruction and it is not used for effective communication in their education system.

- Description: This research is an investigation of the potential means to make the Information Systems (IS) course more accessible to Walter Sisulu University (WSU) students. As some IS students at this institution are unable to attend classes on a regular basis, this study aims to establish if and how the WSU Accounting Department (which offers the IS course) could use e-Iearning to support the teaching, learning and assessment of IS. This qualitative study was approached from an interpretive perspective. The study has undergone one cycle of an action research approach. The methods used in the study include surveys, an expert review and focus group interviews. The data was elicited from participants using questionnaires and an interview schedule. A staff questionnaire was used to elicit information from IS staff from four contact universities in South Africa to determine their experience of using Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for e-learning in an IS course. A student questionnaire was used to determine the WSU IS students' reasons for absenteeism, their learning needs, and their current computer access and skills. Data from both of these surveys informed the development of the WSU IS pilot website. An expert review questionnaire ascertained the subject expert's opinions about the newly developed WSU IS pilot website. The website was found to be of good quality with respect to the four aspects that Harvey and Green (J 993 cited in Lomas 2002) use to define quality. Some modifications were made to the WSU IS pilot website as a result of the expert's comments. After the website was used by the IS students, two focus group interviews were conducted to determine the students' perceptions of the value of the website. The data was analyzed, interpreted and linked to the literature surveyed. The main findings indicate that the WSU IS pilot website could be part of a more globalised higher education offering than the paper-based IS course offered before. However, the staff and the student surveys revealed that ICT has opened the gap in equity at the higher education institutions, highlighting that access to a university does not mean equal access to lectures and computers. The WSU IS pilot website endeavoured to capitalise on students' physical access to computers by supporting epistemological access to the curriculum, by encouraging them to exercise control over their learning. This study has ideally enabled the Accounting Department to deliver its services to students and this in turn will hopefully help WSU retain its part-time students and improve the student pass rates.

- Description: An empirical study of HRD, women, HIV and AIDS, and sustainable community development has been undertaken. Women make up approximately half of the population in the world. Taking this into account, there are many places where women do not have the same opportunities as their male counterparts. This is also true for most of Africa. Many people in Africa are deprived of basic education and often the majority of these are women. Even though the situation has improved for many girls and women in many areas, there is still a great deal that needs to be done in order to ensure equal opportunities for everyone within the labor market and society. In order to achieve this, it can be argued that sustainable development and sound human resource (HRD) policy implementation and strategies must be employed. HIV and AIDS damage society just as it does the human body: it begins by killing those parts responsible for building society: the women and breadwinners who sustain and look after the community as a whole. In this proposal, an outline of the structure of the dissertation will be given. The outline of four articles will be presented, as will the uniqueness and the similarities of the articles. For the purpose of this dissertation; different methodological research techniques will be employed according to the themes of the different articles in addition to the desired purpose of the research being conducted. Regarding the data collection, qualitative research will be used in the expectation of uncovering issues relating to women and HRD in Gqebera Township, Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The need for skills development and training in Sub-Saharan Africa is increasing in an area where unstable economies and high unemployment create challenges on many levels. Sub-Saharan Africa is faced with great poverty, skills migration, and HIV and AIDS, which are depleting the region of skilled workers in their prime working years. The region is facing numerous challenges in the development of skills and the ability to make use of the available human resources. It can be argued that the Sub-Saharan African region needs to increase the skilled labor pool and to develop communities. Perhaps most importantly, there is an urgent need for the region to face the impact of globalization on its own terms. This involves the fusion of African philosophy and management styles with the traditional Western theories with HRD strategies and policies that will be suitable for the developing economies in the region. Women in Africa face many difficult and complex situations in society, including difficulties entering the labor market. HIV and AIDS is a major challenge for South Africa and it brings people in the region much grief, sorrow and confusion as the rate of prevalence continues to rise. This article explores the social aspects of the HIV and AIDS pandemic in the communities and in the labor market and the extent to which women are affected on an individual, community and labor market level. HRD in relations to HIV and AIDS is examined in order to get an understanding of the role that HRD should play in the deprived South African communities that struggle to find resources to battle the social consequences of HIV and AIDS. An examination of feminist theory and HRD in Africa indicates the need to incorporate African feminism in the cause of advancing HRD theory. Because they are subject to multiple levels of discrimination, and because there are no country-specific policies to ensure their advancement, African women need to be protected from the patriarchal domination that prevails in the majority of African countries. Despite higher female involvement in African economies, they are denied opportunities and equal rights. If the development goals of Africa are to be achieved, HRD theory needs to incorporate both Western and African feminist theory, specifically related to gender inequalities that women experience in the realm of work. The level women’s understanding of sustainable development in Gqebera Township, South Africa is explored. Further the challenges and opportunities for sustainable HRD in the Sub-Saharan region is examined. Sub-Saharan African is facing numerous challenges including poverty, inequality, HIV and AIDS and high unemployment. All these factors are important to consider when planning HRD policies and strategies in the region. Sustainable development is a worldwide aim and on the agenda of many countries; especially the developing and least developed, the countries on the African continent. The conditions under and the degree to which women in Sub-Saharan Africa have been participating in the development process in the past have often not enabled them to fully develop their capacity in order to take part in the work towards sustainable development.

- Description: This research is an interpretive case study, which investigated the relationship between the development and use of the teaching and learning support material, “A Year of Special Days”. An in depth investigation was conducted in South Africa and Zimbabwe where developers and users of the booklet were asked to contribute their experiences with the booklet through questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and workshops. Developers contributed on the purpose for which the booklet was produced while the users explained how the booklet was being used in different contexts. The research also tracked the development and use of booklet in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region through a workshop held at the Environmental Education Association of Southern Africa (EEASA) Conference in Lusaka, Zambia, in May 2005. Some personal interviews and informal encounters with people who have used it in the past and those using it now were also conducted at EEASA. This case study explored the axes of tension between the development and use of the resource material, “A Year of Special Days”, with the view to informing development and use of materials at the SADC Centre. A long-term intention is to use the framework developed, for similar work in the wider SADC region. The research recommended on how the SADC Centre can track the relationship between the materials developed at the Centre and their use in different contexts. The study established that the booklet “A Year of Special Days” was initially developed for informal education by faith communities mainly in the Anglican Church but turned out to be a resource more applicable for formal education mainly in the national school system of South Africa for environmental learning. That the resource material lacked effective monitoring support from the developers for the initial intended users where there was no formal education structure was an important link in materials development. It is important for resource materials developers to facilitate the participatory monitoring and evaluation of resource materials when they are in use. The study also established that SADC resources materials are easily adaptable and that the process of resource materials development offers important networking opportunities, which allow the adaptation and adoption of similar resource materials for local contexts. The booklet was adapted and adopted by at least eight countries in the form of a booklet, a calendar or a poster. This study provides some recommendations that may be used to guide the Southern African Development Community Regional Environmental Education Programme (REEP) to enhance processes in the development and adaptation of teaching and learning support materials by environmental educators in southern Africa.
