A personality-based surveillance model for Facebook apps

- Description: The surveillance of data through the use of Facebook Apps is an ongoing and persistent problem that impacts millions of users. Nonetheless, limited research has been conducted investigating to what extent a Facebook user’s personality influences their awareness of such surveillance practices. Thus, to understand this situation better, the current study inductively developed four propositions from secondary data sources as part of a detailed content analysis. Spanning three search and analysis phases the content analysis led to the development of the research model. Guided by the propositions and research questions, a questionnaire was developed based on the relevant constructs prescribed by the Theory of Planned Behaviour. This questionnaire was used, and a total of 651 responses were collected from Facebook users over the age of 18 years old and residing in the United States of America. Primary data took place at both a univariate and multivariate level with a specific focus on the development of a structural model. Interpretation of the structural model revealed that out of all the Big Five personality traits, Conscientiousness exhibited the strongest relationship with information security awareness followed by Openness to Experience and Neuroticism, respectively. The results further indicated that the model constructs based on attitude, social norms and awareness significantly influenced the intended use of Facebook Apps. The study also contributes by indicating which personality traits are most vulnerable to Facebook App surveillance. For example, it was found that individuals high in Conscientiousness are the least vulnerable with individuals high in Extraversion being the most vulnerable. Since the results indicate that not all the personality traits are significantly related to the model constructs, additional factors may contribute to App surveillance in this context. Concerning this, factors such as user apathy, information privacy, privacy concerns, control and Facebook dependency are discussed as a means to argue why this might be the case.

- Description: This thesis is divided into three parts, united under the general theme of bioinformatics tool development and variation analysis. Part 1 describes the design and development of the Job Management System (JMS), a workflow management system for high performance computing (HPC). HPC has become an integral part of bioinformatics. Computational methods for molecular dynamics and next generation sequencing (NGS) analysis, which require complex calculations on large datasets, are not yet feasible on desktop computers. As such, powerful computer clusters have been employed to perform these calculations. However, making use of these HPC clusters requires familiarity with command line interfaces. This excludes a large number of researchers from taking advantage of these resources. JMS was developed as a tool to make it easier for researchers without a computer science background to make use of HPC. Additionally, JMS can be used to host computational tools and pipelines and generates both web-based interfaces and RESTful APIs for those tools. The web-based interfaces can be used to quickly and easily submit jobs to the underlying cluster. The RESTful web API, on the other hand, allows JMS to provided backend functionality for external tools and web servers that want to run jobs on the cluster. Numerous tools and workflows have already been added to JMS, several of which have been incorporated into external web servers. One such web server is the Human Mutation Analysis (HUMA) web server and database. HUMA, the topic of part 2 of this thesis, is a platform for the analysis of genetic variation in humans. HUMA aggregates data from various existing databases into a single, connected and related database. The advantages of this are realized in the powerful querying abilities that it provides. HUMA includes protein, gene, disease, and variation data and can be searched from the angle of any one of these categories. For example, searching for a protein will return the protein data (e.g. protein sequences, structures, domains and families, and other meta-data). However, the related nature of the database means that genes, diseases, variation, and literature related to the protein will also be returned, giving users a powerful and holistic view of all data associated with the protein. HUMA also provides links to the original sources of the data, allowing users to follow the links to find additional details. HUMA aims to be a platform for the analysis of genetic variation. As such, it also provides tools to visualize and analyse the data (several of which run on the underlying cluster, via JMS). These tools include alignment and 3D structure visualization, homology modeling, variant analysis, and the ability to upload custom variation datasets and map them to proteins, genes and diseases. HUMA also provides collaboration features, allowing users to share and discuss datasets and job results. Finally, part 3 of this thesis focused on the development of a suite of tools, MD-TASK, to analyse genetic variation at the protein structure level via network analysis of molecular dynamics simulations. The use of MD-TASK in combination with the tools developed in the previous parts of this thesis is showcased via the analysis of variation in the renin-angiotensinogen complex, a vital part of the renin-angiotensin system.

- Description: This thesis is an exploration of the concept of Mphahlele’s African Humanism, against the backdrop of the life and work of Peter Tshobiso Mtuze, well-known author of isiXhosa books, critic, academic and spiritual leader. Mtuze’s commitment to the collective rather than the individual is clearly illustrated in the thesis, suggesting that his early life of struggle, his belated development as an acclaimed academic, as well as his spiritual growth are all intertwined and underpinned by African Humanism and an Afrocentric ethos.The thesis consists of six chapters with each chapter focusing on a particular aspect of the research topic. Chapter One deals with the introduction to the research topic. Part of the introductory material consists of conventional preliminaries such as a research statement, aim of study, methodology, main assumptions of the study and the significance and benefit of the study. Chapter Two is the theoretical foundation of the thesis. It covers the origin of African Humanism as consciousness and as a system of society, oral and written literature in Africa and the early Xhosa literary humanism. Chapter Three is an overview of the biographical background of Peter Tshobiso Mtuze, his Pass Law battles in different towns of South Africa, how he joined the African National Congress (ANC) and his working life and writing life. Chapter Four analyses two major novels, UDingezweni and Alitshoni lingaphumi, and a short story book, Amathol’ eendaba. The analysis aims at revealing African consciousness and African way of life with specific reference to Xhosa people. Chapter Five deals with Xhosa spirituality, its aspects and symbols, Mtuze’s Spirituality and Anglicanism and his writings. Chapter Six is a general conclusion that highlights the main aspects of the thesis, the African personality and the prospects of African humanism in today’s world.
