- Description: Situational leadership is relevant to any organisation responsible for the delivery of services. Senior public sector leaders must cultivate the characteristics necessary to drive the implementation of initiatives geared towards meeting the developmental objectives of local government. The introduction of the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) of the municipality for the political term beginning in August 2016 provided a prospect of investigating the management of the implementation of this strategic blueprint in the context of the type of leadership styles prevalent in the local government environment. This dissertation therefore elucidates the idea of situational leadership as a key competence in driving the implementation of the IDP. This is through an examination of the understandings of twelve managers involved in driving this implementation. This research took the form of an evaluation case study. The critical incident technique was used to establish from the managers, as part of the interviews, a particular incident relevant to the delivery of services in line with the IDP. The focus in engaging with research participants was on their exercise of leadership as managers through the various contexts/ situations that arise within their working environment. The perspective gleaned from the participants is one which demonstrates the application of the model of situational leadership in a given sector. Furthermore, the study pinpointed the need to consider situational leadership through situation-specific lenses that take on board the role of relationships, organisational culture and its perceived impact on the performance of the organisation. The Case Study of the application of situational leadership provides insight into the myriad of challenges faced by local government leaders in driving service delivery imperatives. This is achieved through interviews with participants and the use of inductive thematic analysis as a tool of analysis. It provides an example of the value to be derived from situational leadership for leaders wanting to reach new frontiers in the work that they do. Ultimately, the service delivery expectations must be satisfied by those on whom this responsibility falls.

- Description: Using the theoretical framework of symbolic interactionism, this research sought to analyse and explore how Rhodes University students, both depressed and not depressed, understand depression, and how their understanding influences their interaction with people who do suffer from depression. For the purposes of this paper, eight participants were involved in an in-depth interview process. Out of the eight participants, six of them suffered from depression while the other remaining two participants had never suffered from depression, but they were close to someone who had depression. The findings of this research varied, some understood depression as a mental disturbance, others understood it as a condition that affects your emotions, and others understood it as a multifaceted condition that is highly subjective and cannot be understood using standardized measures. The participants’ personal experience and introduction into a new environment, in this context, university, changed their understanding of depression. The change in how they understood depression correlated with the change in how they interacted with depressed people.

- Description: My collection of isiZulu poems is based on my rural and traditional upbringing. It draws on language and customs which have shaped and defined me as a woman born in the South of KwaZulu-Natal. I write about how I have to conform to both a rural life and an urban one that forms my second world. I find myself having to switch between these lives, which benefits me a lot, and I feel a responsibility to bring hope to young people especially from the rural side, that nothing is wrong with being who and where they are. My writing is influenced by authors such as Nazim Hikmet, Mafika Gwala, and Mazisi Kunene who encourages black writers to write about their own customs and stories rather than embracing ‘western civilization’ and foreign languages. I also like the contemporary subjects and the humour in Dr Nakanjani Sibiya’s work.

- Description: Increased CO2 production and the consequent ocean acidification (OA) have been identified as one of the greatest threats to both calcifying and non-calcifying marine organisms. Traditionally, marine fishes, as non-calcifying organisms, were considered to have a higher tolerance to near-future OA conditions owing to their well-developed ion regulatory mechanisms. However, recent studies provide evidence to suggest that they may not be as resilient to near-future OA conditions as previously thought. In addition, earlier life stages of marine fishes are thought to be less tolerant than juveniles and adults of the same species as they lack well-developed ion regulatory mechanisms for maintaining homeostasis. This study follows up on previous studies examining the effects of near-future OA on larval Argyrosomus japonicus, an estuarine-dependent marine fish species, in order to identify the tipping point of tolerance for the larvae of this species. These previous studies showed that elevated pCO2, predicted for the year 2100, had negative effects on growth, development and metabolism and ultimately, survival of larval A. japonicus from post-flexion stage. Larval A. japonicus in the present study were reared from egg up to 22 DAH (days after hatching) under three treatments. The three treatments, (pCO2 353 μatm; pH 8.03), (pCO2 451 μatm; pH 7.93) and (pCO2 602 μatm; pH 7.83) corresponded to levels predicted to occur in year 2050, 2068 and 2090 respectively under the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Representative Concentration Pathways (IPCC RCP) 8.5 model. Size-at-hatch, growth, development and metabolic responses (standard and active metabolic rates and metabolic scope) were assessed and compared between the three treatments throughout the rearing period. Five earlier larval life stages (hatchling – flexion/post-flexion) were identified by the end of the experiment. There were no significant differences in size-at-hatch (P > 0.05), development or the active metabolic (P > 0.05) or metabolic scope (P > 0.05) of fish in the three treatments throughout the study. However, the standard metabolic rate was significantly higher in the year 2068 treatment but only at the flexion/post-flexion stage which could be attributed to differences in developmental rates (including the development of the gills) between the 2068 and the other two treatments. Overall, the metabolic scope was narrowest in the 2090 treatment, but varied according to life stage. Although not significantly different, metabolic scope in the 2090 treatment was noticeably lower at the flexion stage compared to the other two treatments, and the development appeared slower, suggesting that this could be the stage most prone to OA. The study concluded that, in isolation, OA levels predicted to occur between 2050 and 2090 will not negatively affect size-at-hatch, growth, development, and metabolic responses of larval A. japonicus up to 22 DAH (flexion/post-flexion stage). Taken together with the previous studies of the same species, the tipping point of tolerance (where negative impacts will begin) in larvae of the species appears to be between the years 2090 and 2100.

- Description: Global ecosystems face unprecedented crises in habitat fragmentation, destruction and ultimately extinction (Groves, 2003), and of all the vary-ing ecological systems rivers are the most neglected and endangered (Groves, 2003; Driver, et al., 2005; Roux et al., 2005). The greatest threat to these systems is the loss or degradation of natural habitat and processes (Driver et al., 2005), and water temperatures, after flow vol-umes, are a primary abiotic driver of species patterns within river sys-tems. Stuckenberg (1969) highlighted the links between temperature, topography and faunal assemblages, while Rivers-Moore et al.(2004) highlights the major impacts of water temperatures on organisms, and illustrate how water temperatures are one of the primary environmental drivers structuring fish communities in the Sabie River, arguably the most icthyologically species-rich river in South Africa.

- Description: In the employment context employers may view certain conduct/behaviour committed by an employee or a group of employees to be repugnant and unacceptable resulting in the disciplinary action that may lead to a dismissal sanction taken against such employee or employees. Even though the employer has a right to discipline the employees for a contravention of a rule or a policy and even dismiss the employee/s involved, such a disciplinary action and dismissal must be based on a certain procedure where the principle of fairness must be adhered to. The Labour Relations Act 66 of 1995 (“the Act”) and Schedule 8 of the Code of Good Practice deals with the aspects of dismissals related to conduct and capacity, however, each case is unique, it has to be approached on its own merits. Schedule 8(3) states that, “formal procedures in disciplinary measures do not have to be invoked every time a rule is broken or a standard is not met”. It is therefore necessary that there should be a disciplinary code which guides the workers and the employers, it must be clear and be understood by all the parties. The disciplinary code of conduct serves as the foundation of good discipline because everybody knows the consequences of his/her contravention of those guidelines enumerated in the Code of Conduct. The Code of Good Practice under Schedule 8(3), states that “while employees should be protected from arbitrary action, employers are entitled to satisfactory conduct and work performance from their employees”, so a very good relationship between the two parties is most important if there is to be stability and industrial peace in the workplace.
