Cooperatives in Mhlontlo Local Municipality, Eastern Cape Province : an examination of the ablers and disablers of grassroots development

- Description: Scholars and policy makers often see cooperatives as agents of rural economic development. However, experiences have showed that cooperatives in some rural communities have not brought sustainable rural development as levels of poverty and unemployment are still staggeringly high. It is against this background that this study examines the enablers and disablers of cooperatives in Mhlontlo Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape. In order to achieve this aim, the study adopted qualitative research design. Oral interviews and Focus Group Discussions were used to collect qualitative data from the purposively selected participants. Also, official documents on the roles of cooperatives to rural development were used to complement primary sources of data collection. Thematic analytical technique was used to analyse data obtained. The result of the analysis revealed that lack of basic infrastructures, inadequate value addition and inefficient monitoring and evaluation of the programmes have disabled the cooperative societies in Mhlontlo Local Municipality from achieving the goals of rural development. Based on the analysis of data, the study concluded that cooperatives in Mhlontlo Local Municipality are faced with immense challenges, which are hampering their contributions to achieving sustainable rural development in the municipality. Based on this conclusion, the study recommended that in order to improve the efficiency of cooperative societies in terms of achieving rural development, government needs to engage relevant stakeholders such as the local government officials, private sector, community members and the NGOs in the formulation and implementation of strategies to be adopted by the cooperative societies in bringing about sustainable rural development.

While working in the Oliver Reginald Tambo district in the Eastern Cape Department of Health, the researcher noticed that late booking was the norm in all sub-districts, especially in the King Sabata Dalindyebo (KSD) sub-district, resulting in impaired antenatal care and an increased potential for adverse outcomes such as maternal mortalities. Purpose of the study: The purpose of the study was to explore and describe the reasons for late booking for antenatal care by pregnant women in the KSD sub-district. Objectives: The objective of the study was to determine reasons why women were booking late for antenatal in KSD sub district. Methods: Thirteen in-depth, unstructured interviews were conducted with late bookers (i.e., those who sought antenatal care (ANC) after twenty weeks of pregnancy) between July and August 2015. The interviews were recorded and, subsequently, transcribed by a reputable linguist from Walter Sisulu University (WSU) and analysed using Creswell’s thematic analysis model. Findings: The average gestational age of booking was 22 weeks (ranging from 22 to 28 weeks). Most women were teenagers and young unmarried women, most of whom were still attending school. All were unemployed. Most had experienced previous pregnancies. All these women delayed attending clinic early due to their ignorance of the exact gestational period for one to start the clinic. Although most of the women did not have direct reasons, the bulk of their reasons for delays were linked to long distances being travelled, leading to the payment of expensive taxi fees. This may also be attributed to cultural factors that seem to promote a veil of secrecy regarding pregnancy, the desire for visual evidence of pregnancy first and the practice of married women having to care for sick relatives. Conclusion: Poor access to clinics is a fundamental systemic failure and a major contributor and one of the reasons why women delayed in attending antenatal care clinics. Low socio economic status and cultural beliefs, coupled with long distance and expensive taxi fare, are other reasons for late booking.

Use of fungicides for the management of Uromycladium acaciae in Acacia mearnsii plantations, South Africa

- Description: South Africa has ca. 110 000 ha planted to Acacia mearnsii with 85% of the revenue from the species obtained from the timber, and 15% from the bark. Since its detection in 2013, wattle rust (recently identified as Uromycladium acaciae) has spread throughout the black wattle plantation area in KwaZulu-Natal, and from 2015 it was recorded in southern Mpumalanga. The pathogen affects trees of all age classes, causing a reduction in growth, as well as mortality with severe infection. Research has been initiated to determine a number of strategies for the management of the pathogen. These strategies include understanding wattle rust biology and epidemiology, planting tolerant or resistant black wattle, the testing and use of fungicide for management, and remote sensing and process based modelling to assess black wattle loss and high risk areas. These, with the outcomes from this research, will be combined into an overall Integrated Pest Management plan. Of the various strategies, the management of wattle rust with the use of fungicides is important, not only as it will have the potential to reduce the negative impacts of wattle rust, but it will also provide an interim solution until the other research areas provide alternative solutions. To address the current lack of fungicides available (and knowledge around their application) for the management of wattle rust, a series of trials were implemented to screen fungicides for their potential use, extend periods between the re-application of fungicide (if possible), the linking of symptoms to Disease Expression to aid with the timing of application, and the cost:benefits associated with fungicide use. Prior to the initiation of research into managing wattle rust, no fungicides were registered in South Africa for the control of wattle rust. In October / November 2014, three A. mearnsii trials were initiated in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands and SE Mpumulanga where fungicides were tested at varying rates for the control of wattle rust. Wattle rust had a significant and negative impact on tree growth, irrespective of site and/or previous infection. All fungicides tested and at all the rates applied, proved effective for control. For the most effective control of wattle rust, fungicides should be applied as a preventative, rather than corrective measure. In October 2015 a trial was initiated in southern KwaZulu-Natal to determine the effectiveness of varied application schedules and adjuvants of fungicides for the management of wattle rust. Two trials had initially been initiated but one had to be abandoned due to browsing damage. Wattle rust had a significant impact upon Groundline Diameter and Biomass Index but not Height. All of the adjuvants used and application schedules were effective in managing wattle rust. The most effective fungicide application used will therefore be based upon cost and in a manner that will reduce the likelihood of acquired resistance developing in wattle rust populations. The timing of fungicide application is necessary for optimal use of these fungicides. Fungicide applications could potentially be linked to the emergence of different wattle rust symptoms to optimize fungicide use. Wattle rust symptoms were analysed from the untreated control plots of two trials, one in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands and one in southern KwaZulu-Natal, to determine whether wattle rust Disease expression could be linked to black wattle tree growth. Regression trees were used for the analysis, as linear and multiple regression techniques would be unsuitable for the data. Regression trees were overfitted and attempts at testing the robustness of the model by cross-validation were unsuccessful. No individual symptom emerged as a significant predictor of tree growth, indicating that fungicide application should take place with the onset of any of the wattle rust symptoms tested. The results from six trials testing the use of fungicides for managing wattle rust were compared to assess costs associated with fungicide use. Relative growth for Biomass Index was compared to untreated controls to obtain comparisons within and between sites. Costs versus benefit were compared using a two-way table to determine the most optimum treatment. The largest portion of treatment costs was attributed to the cost of fungicide. No single treatment was found to be optimal for the recommended rate of application. The use of adjuvants increased the cost of treatment, without additional benefit in growth. Control of wattle rust is beneficial, although costly if over-applied. Rotation-end data is required to determine whether fungicide use is economical for managing wattle rust over an extended period of time. As a limited number of fungicides, from a limited number of fungicide groups were screened, the screening of additional fungicides from different fungicide groups will provide an additional selection of fungicides. If these are used in combination or alternation, the likelihood of acquired resistance developing among wattle rust populations will be reduced. Linking fungicide applications with wattle rust epidemiological and climatic data will aid in optimal use of fungicides, by timing applications to coincide with epidemiological and climatic cues. An investigation of servant leadership within Rhodes University sports clubs

- Description: This research investigates the level of servant leadership within Rhodes University sport clubs. The goals of this research are to assess the perception the club members have of their chairperson and to key identify areas of development. The sport clubs at Rhodes University are partially run by chairpersons who are voted into the position by his or her peers of a sports club. The chairpersons work alongside Rhodes University employees who are a part of the Sports Administration team to oversee the running, scheduling and finances of the club. The sports clubs are representative of Rhodes University and it is the chairperson’s responsibility to ensure the club is lead and run effectively. Robert Greenleaf coined the term servant leader in the 1970s (Greenleaf, 1997). The servant leader is a leader who is driven by his or her followers, as leadership involves a leader serving his or her followers first and foremost (Greenleaf, 1977). The leader takes on a role that is supportive and contributes to their personal as well as their professional achievements (Smith, Montagno and Kuzmenko, 2004). A questionnaire consisting of 27 questions was drafted, of which were four demographic questions. A 5-point Likert Scale was used in order for the participants to respond to the questions. The questionnaire was drawn from a number of questionnaires available in literature on leadership and adapted to suit Rhodes University sports clubs. The questionnaire was distributed personally by the researcher, as well as through an online questionnaire. There were a total of 153 candidates who participated in the study. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse the data. The majority of the respondents had the perceptions that their chairperson displayed characteristics of a servant leader. Majority of the participants were in agreement of the questions asked in the questionnaire, which focused on many servant leadership qualities. The results will be handed over to the Head of Sports Administration in order for them to get an idea of their leaders’ characteristics and areas where they can improve upon.

- Description: As managers with direct contact with workers on the floor, line managers are responsible for implementation of the performance appraisal system at Kansanshi Mining plc. Commonly, implementation of performance appraisal is affected by how line managers interact with their subordinates before, during and after an appraisal interview. Notably, no study has been conducted at Kansanshi mine to understand how line managers conduct performance appraisals since their introduction. This qualitative study aims to build an understanding of how line managers at Kansanshi conduct performance appraisal interviews and what enablers and barriers they face in this process. In pursuit of the research aim, line managers from all the ten departments of the mine were considered as eligible for the study. Using stratified random sampling, ten of the 30 line managers from all ten departments across the mine site were selected. A total of fifteen semi-structured, in-depth, face-to-face interviews were conducted with ten line managers to gather data. These individual interviews were conducted on the mine site in the interviewees' offices as well as other convenient places such as the Kansanshi main boardroom. On average, each interview took between 45 to 60 minutes. All these interviews were audio recorded, transcribed and thereafter analyzed using open coding and constant comparison technique to induce themes. Findings of the study show a variety of barriers and enablers of line managers in their conduct of performance appraisal interviews at Kansanshi mine in Zambia. All ten line managers unanimously highlighted that (a) lack of clear job descriptions and set of individual targets as well as (b) lack of adequate refresher training on how to conduct performance appraisals affected how they conducted performance appraisals. Eight of the ten line managers highlighted that (c) perceived subjectivity of the system while seven of the ten highlighted that (d) predominant production focus and priority were barriers to them in how they conducted performance appraisals. On the other hand, ten line managers highlighted that (a) top management commitment to the implementation of a performance appraisal system, seven highlighted that (b) employees' hope for rewards and five line managers highlighted that (c) spring for career development and progression were perceived as enablers in their implementation of performance appraisals. - Description: Since the dissolution of apartheid, corporate governance in South Africa has evolved from being a soft mainly ethical issue to a hard knowledge-based technological issue, recognised as pivotal to the success and revitalisation of the country’s capital markets and, ultimately, the prospects of the corporate economy. These high stakes have produced a succession of measures aimed at transforming corporate governance in the economy. As such, South Africa’s corporate managers are consistently faced with the seemingly unassailable obstacle of discerning and implementing technologically progressive and culturally/racially unbiased management strategies/systems. The focus of this thesis is the latter of these two obstacles. Ubuntu acts as the scope via which the issues embedded within the incumbent management strategies/systems are viewed. Ubuntu philosophy embodies a socio-cultural framework that applies to all individuals and institutions throughout the continent. It embodies collectivism and teamwork, creation of synergies and competitive advantages, humanist leadership styles and maturity, consensus in decision-making systems, effective communication, and community-based corporate social responsibility. Ubuntu is pervasive in almost all parts of Southern African continent – it is integrated into all aspects of day-to-day life throughout the region. This thesis reviews and analyses some of the lessons that can be learned through the inception of African management, more specifically Ubuntu management, within South Africa’s corporate sphere. This thesis aims to prove that there exists a need for a new South African corporate management system, one which is able to harmoniously integrate the incumbent, western-orientated management strategies and systems with one of African origins.

- Description: False codling moth is a known pest of economic importance to many cultivated crops in South Africa and Africa south of the Sahara, and is particularly severe on citrus. If the fruit is infested just before harvest the chances of detecting signs of infestation are very low. As a result, the risk of packaging infested fruit and exporting them as healthy fruit is high. It is therefore a priority to develop a post-harvest technique for detection of False codling moth in citrus fruit at different levels of infestation in order to reduce phytosanitary risk. Compounds released and detected were indicative of infestation and were not insect produced but naturally produced fruit volatiles emitted at higher levels as a result of the insect within the fruit. Five major volatile compounds of interest were released by the infested oranges. These major volatile compounds include D-limonene, 3,7-dimethyl-1,3,6-octatriene, (E)-4,8-dimethyl-1,3,7-nonatriene, caryophyllene and naphthalene. Limonene was one of the most abundant volatile compounds released by the infested citrus fruit. Naphthalene, which is possibly produced due to larval feeding and development within the fruit maintained higher concentrations than controls throughout the infestation within the fruit. Naphthalene would be a good indicator of False codling moth infestation, however, not primarily for early infestation detection. A significantly higher concentration of D-limonene, 3,7-dimethyl-1,3,6-octatriene, (E)-4,8-dimethyl-1,3,7-nonatriene and naphthalene was detected using the SEP over the SPME technique. The application of an SPME procedure and the utilization of this method for detection of volatiles present in the headspace of intact infested fruit are evaluated and the possible volatile compounds diagnostic of Thaumatotibia leucotreta infestation of orange fruit and differences in volatile compound response in different orange varieties is discussed.

- Description: In terms of the South African Government Structure, Local Government is entrusted with the service delivery mandate. Furthermore, Local Government, being the closest sphere of government to the people, is expected to enhance service delivery to the communities within its jurisdiction. Local Government has for the past four years, undergone numerous transformation processes, ranging from Local Authorities, to Transitional Local Councils and to Municipalities. Having mentioned that, Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, in particular, has recently acquired metropolitan status, which requires another transformation protocol. At the same time this automatically raises the bar on the service delivery expectations by the communities. In general, Local Government has been extensively supported by the National and Provincial Governments to deliver superior services to communities. This has happened through numerous pieces of legislations such as the Municipal Structures Act 117 of 1998, the Municipal Systems Act 32 of 2000, the Municipal Finance Management Act 56 of 2003 and the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, act 108 of 1996. In 1997, the South African Government introduced a White Paper on the Transformation of the Public Service. This was to re-emphasis on the performance enhancing role of both the political and administrative leadership in the implementation of service delivery mandates. The need was identified that communities require an assurance that their needs are taken care of by the leadership of the municipalities. It is therefore the role of leadership to ensure effective implementation of service delivery initiatives and to promote a culture of performance among the administrative officials of the municipality. The aim of this study is to critically investigate the role of leadership: A case study of Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCMM), with the view that BCMM is considered one of the high capacity municipalities within the Eastern Cape Province. During the literature review, it became evident that different people and scholars, dating back in the early 90’s, view leadership in different forms. In sourcing the information for this research, structured interviews were conducted with five Directors, five Executive Mayoral Councillors and five Ward Councillors. The interviews were an extensive consultation process which resulted in over 30 hours of engagement with research participants, with an average of 2 hours per structured interview. A four week period was allocated and effectively utilised for this exercise. The research provides recommendations for further research on other related components of the subject such as the intended role as compared to the current role fulfilled by both administrative and political leadership, and suggested solutions to the current problems in Municipalities, in order to ensure their sustainability within Local Government. The research findings identified the need for the leadership to take the leading role in service delivery initiatives in order to address the service delivery challenges in local government. Political leadership need to enhance the public participation process to ensure the community is on board regarding the progress of their respective projects and planning processes.

- Description: Research studies and the review of academic literature has found that strategic leadership had a direct impact on organisational climate, and that climate in turn accounted for nearly one third of the financial results of organisations (Goleman, 2000). The conclusion from research conducted across 13 industries established that over a 20 year period, leadership accounted for more variations in performance than any other variable (Northouse, 2006). This thesis confines its research to a case study on Famous Brands. Famous Brands is currently one of Africa’s leading Quick Service Restaurant and Casual Dining franchisors and is also represented in the United Kingdom. The Group also has a manufacturing arm and supplies its franchisees, the retail trade and the broader hospitality industry with a wide range of meat, sauce, bakery, ice cream, fruit juice and mineral water products. At the time when the company’s name changed from Steers Holdings to Famous Brand in 2004, Kevin Hedderwick was appointed as Chief Operating Officer. The research examines how Kevin Hedderwick has exercised strategic leadership and thereby influenced Famous Brands’ performance. Hedderwick displays qualities, attributes and behaviours that are characterized by the phenomenon of “strategic leadership”. A quantitative analysis of Famous Brands financial performance (between 2005 and 2009) was undertaken. Further qualitative descriptions were used to further give meaning to the financial results. The success experienced by Famous Brands since Hedderwick’s appointment, seem to suggest that strategic choices and initiatives have been met with great success. The research is presented in the form of a case study that can be developed into a teaching case to be used in the classroom to illustrate the exercise of strategic leadership. The researcher explored a qualitative research framework by collecting and assimilating data from available documentation, and from a formal interview that was conducted with Mr Hedderwick. Information was also obtained from interviews that were conducted with other senior executives and influential personnel. This research concludes that the success of organisations is dependent on the interventions of a strategic leader who displays a specialist set of skills and behaviours. These strategic leaders have the ability to successfully influence their employees, thereby creating an enabling environment for the implementation of their strategic choices.

It explains how the money market rate is transmitted to the retail interest rates both in the long-run and short-run and tests the symmetric and asymmetric interest rate pass-through using the Scholnick (1996) ECM and the Wang and Lee (2009) ECM-EGARCH (1, 1)-M methodology. This permitted the examination of the impact of interest rate volatility, along with the leverage effect. An incomplete pass-through is found in the short-run. From the entire sample period, a symmetric adjustment is found in the deposit rate, which had upward rigidity adjustment, while an asymmetric adjustment is found in the lending rate, with a downward rigidity adjustment. The relationship between leadership style and employee engagement in Sasol Gas, South Africa

- Description: The main purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a significant relationship between leadership styles of Sasol Gas leaders and their followers’ level of employee engagement. The instruments used in the study were the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) (Form 5X) and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES 9). The MLQ (5X) was completed by the followers and leaders of Sasol Gas to determine whether Sasol Gas leaders use transactional, transformational and/or laissez-faire leadership styles. The work engagement instrument was completed by each follower to determine current levels of employee engagement. Descriptive statistics were obtained and correlations completed for the data to determine whether the different leadership styles exhibit different levels of engagement. The MLQ survey results indicate that leaders of Sasol Gas have more transformational than transactional leadership styles. The UWES 9 measured the three factors of vigour, dedication, and absorption; dedication had the highest mean compared to vigour and absorption, indicating that Sasol Gas employees strongly identify themselves with their work because it is experienced as meaningful, inspiring, and challenging. This research found a statistically significant, albeit weak, relationship between transformational and transactional leadership styles and employee engagement. This is a positive reflection of the current Sasol Gas leaders because empirical evidence shows that transformational leadership behaviours are more successful for attaining and fulfilling goals during organisational change.

- Description: The main purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a significant relationship between leadership styles of Sasol Gas leaders and their followers’ level of employee engagement. The instruments used in the study were the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) (Form 5X) and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES 9). The MLQ (5X) was completed by the followers and leaders of Sasol Gas to determine whether Sasol Gas leaders use transactional, transformational and/or laissez-faire leadership styles. The work engagement instrument was completed by each follower to determine current levels of employee engagement. Descriptive statistics were obtained and correlations completed for the data to determine whether the different leadership styles exhibit different levels of engagement. The MLQ survey results indicate that leaders of Sasol Gas have more transformational than transactional leadership styles. The UWES 9 measured the three factors of vigour, dedication, and absorption; dedication had the highest mean compared to vigour and absorption, indicating that Sasol Gas employees strongly identify themselves with their work because it is experienced as meaningful, inspiring, and challenging. This research found a statistically significant, albeit weak, relationship between transformational and transactional leadership styles and employee engagement. This is a positive reflection of the current Sasol Gas leaders because empirical evidence shows that transformational leadership behaviours are more successful for attaining and fulfilling goals during organisational change.

Furthermore, the study will further prove that balancing is very important and that too much or too little of any given form of social capital is counterproductive. In recent years Port Elizabeth townships have been flooded by Somali traders. The informal sector is dominated by Somali traders. Social networks can affect business and economic performances. Social networks enable Somali traders to succeed where Xhosa traders have failed. The Somali traders are succeeding because they are emphasizing both bonding and bridging social capital. Xhosa traders are failing because they are placing too much emphasis on bonding social capital. Chapter Two has focused on the literature review and theory of social capital. In Chapter Three the research methodology was provided. Chapter four has focused on the report on empirical findings. Finally Chapter Five has focused on the implications of the findings and provide the summary, conclusion and recommendations.

This project set out to assess gambling behaviour, and more so responsible gambling practices, to be able to conclude how, and in what form, responsible gambling takes place. The research was conducted USll1g a sample of one-hundred-and-thirty-seven gamblers from Hemingway's Casino in East London to develop data and establish norms on general gambling behaviour over a week, by administration of a survey questionnaire. The analysis of the data focussed on areas such as the link between gender and gambling behaviour, amount earned and amount spent on gambling, age and gambling trends as well as belief in luck and chances to win. Finally, the strategies (if any) used by gamblers to avoid problem gambling or overspending were assessed, and described by the gamblers themselves, and added to the results of the research. The results indicate that the majority of gamblers in the Eastern Cape are responsible, but many do still exhibit cognitive distortions and other behaviours that might put them at risk for problem gambling. With these results it is possible to provide basic data and information about the nature of gambling in the East London area that can be added to previous (as well as subsequent) studies, in order to build a clearer and more representative picture of the gambling situation in the Eastern Cape, South Africa.

- Description: A study to evaluate the effect of feeding a high energy diet on the productive and reproductive characteristics of young bulls was carried out at two different locations in the Free State Province. Two trials were conducted with the aim of evaluating the effect of level of dietary energy and age of the bulls on their productive performance and reproductive characteristics. In the first trial, two levels of energy were fed to two groups of young (343 ± days) Bonsmara bulls. The high energy group HE (n=36) bulls were Phase-C performance tested in an official performance testing center and received a high energy diet for 112 days (28 days adaptation and 84 days testing). The medium energy group ME (n=18) bulls were phase-D performance tested and received a medium-energy diet for 140 days (28 days adaptation and 112 days testing). At the end of both performance testing periods, the productive performances and reproductive characteristics of the two groups were compared. The productive parameters compared included final live body weight (FLW), average daily gain (ADG), average daily gain per day of age (ADA) and body condition score (BCS). The reproductive parameters compared between groups included scrotal circumference (SC), semen volume (Vol) and concentration (SConO), mass movement (MV), linear motility (LM), percentage live sperm (LS), as well as percentage of total abnormalities: major (MD) and minor (MinD). The results of this trial indicated that in general, bulls from the HE group showed a significant (p<0.01) higher FLW, BCS, ADG and ADA, but a significant (p<0.01) lower volume and concentration of the ejaculate, lower mass movement and linear motility, lower percentage of live sperm and higher percentage of major defects and significantly (p<0.05) higher percentage of minor defects than the bulls from the ME group. In the second trial, 36 young Bonsmara bulls were divided into two groups according to their age at the arrival at an official Phase-C performance testing center. Older bulls (OB) (n=19) and younger bulls (YB) (n=17) all received a high energy diet for 112 days (28 days adaptation and 84 days testing). At the end of the Phase-C test the productive performances and reproductive characteristics of the two groups were compared. The animals from both groups that did not pass the Phase-C test, either due to poor performance or not meeting the breed standards, were slaughtered at an official abattoir and their scrotums and carcass characteristics were also compared. The productive parameters compared between the two groups included final live body weight (FLW), average daily gain (ADG), average daily gain per day of age (ADA), body condition score (BCS), feed conversion ratio (FCR), carcass weight both warm (CWW) and cold (CWC), as well as dressing percentage (CDP) and fat grade (CFG). About half of the bulls in each group showed clear signs of depressed spermatogenesis in their seminiferous tubules, during the histological examination of testicular tissue. The results of this study indicates that high energy diets are beneficial for the productive performance of young bulls (growth rate, BCS and carcass characteristics), but have a detrimental effect on the reproductive characteristics of young bulls. The effect of high energy diets on both the productive and reproductive performances of young beef bulls are more pronounced at a younger age. High energy diets resulted in heavier scrotums in the younger bulls when compared to the older bulls, as a direct result of a higher fat deposition in this region without any relevant effect on testicular size. No intra-testicular fat deposition was observed. The scrotal fat observed in high energy fed young bulls accumulated mainly in the neck of the scrotum, although subcutaneously. These fat deposits may impair testicular thermoregulation and negatively affect the spermatogenesis in the seminiferous tubules, reducing both sperm quantity and quality. Further studies on the effect of high energy diets on bull fertility (as well as on rams and buck) are recommended, to evaluate the extension and duration of its detrimental effects on subsequent fertility.

- Description: I have examined the relationship between the art institution and its social base, and the way in which legitimacy is sought and maintained under changing social circumstances. The social pattern of 'avante garde artist' vs. 'philistine public' has tended to be the context within which 20th century art has developed. The consequent disjuncture between the public art institution and its social base was subsequently accepted as the natural condition of Fine Art production. During the 1980's, two significant factors were to influence this 'natural' condition: i) The demise of 'modernism' internationally, ' which broadened the scope of allowable objects for consideration as Fine Art. ii) Political mobilisation in South Africa was accompanied by calls for democratisation and charges of 'elitism' being levelled against many public institutions. These factors have combined to make the S.A. art institutions (public galleries, tertiary teaching institutions and national art competitions) re-assess their legitimacy, particularly in terms of 'accountability' and 'representativeness' . A close examination of these two factors is essential if one is to gain insight into the current condition of the public art institutions. This research is an attempt to understand the history and the current nature of the shifting relationship between the art institutions and the 'public' in South Africa. A further goal is to assess the extent to which concepts that are valid within the realm of the polity can be transposed into the cultural realm: A tendency prevalent within the cultural debate in South Africa during the 1980's. The emphasis of this mini thesis is on the artworld's perception of its social role. I therefore look at the way changing attitudes are reflected in the statements and writing of leading figures within this sector. The method is to critically analyse texts that pertain to my chosen area of research.
