- Description: The hypothesis of attaching and realising market values as one means of conserving biodiversity has gained ground over the last decade. This has been challenged recently after examination of a number of case studies, largely from tropical Amazonia, on high value logging, marketing of non-timber forest products, and bioprospecting. The conclusion was that market-orientated conservation has seldom generated the financial returns envisaged, and as such cannot be used as an incentive to prevent land transformation. This paper reviews the basis of the challenge to market-orientated conservation on a number of grounds, drawing on examples largely from southern Africa. It concludes that generalizations from tropical Amazonia regarding the failure of market-orientated conservation are probably premature, and that it should remain an option, amongst a number of options, for conservation of biodiversity. Additionally, the prerequisite criteria identified as necessary to create an enabling framework for the success of market-orientated conservation are insufficient. Case studies are presented where the prerequisites do not apply, yet current extraction for market purposes is sustainable. Other potential prerequisites are also considered. There is a need for multivariate analysis, based on a large sample size drawn from across a range of environments and resources, of which factors are important prerequisites for successful market-orientated conservation, and under which circumstances.

- Description: Plasmodesmal connections are unique, highly dynamic intercellular structures that are lined by the plasmamembrane. They are believed to be a vital intercellular communication channel between living cells, linking numbers of living cells into interconnected, highly specialised cellular domains, thus enabling the plant to act as an integrated organism. Their evolution in the higher plant was inevitable. It is accepted that cell heterogeneity rather than cell divergence pressurised developing plant systems along a route that led to the development of intercellular passages and connections. With time these connections have evolved to allow some degree of regulation and traffic control. This paper explores some of the structure/function relationships in plasmodesmata. Attention is focused on the potential role of the neck region of these remarkable structures and discusses models which may explain the processes involved in regulating the movement of substances from cell to cell.

- Description: Avian systematics in southern Africa has been heavily dependent on a small number of museum-based specialists. They produced bird checklists which prescribed the names to be used by other scientists. After an initial phase of cataloguing the avifauna, a major preoccupation was the description of geographical variation, which was documented in an extensive subspecific nomenclature. Until recent years, few African ornithologists have been involved in systematics as a biological discipline. This historical overview considers the contribution of particular individuals from Andrew Smith to Phillip Clancey.

A continuous process for the biological treatment of heavy metal contaminated acid mine water

- Description: Alkaline precipitation of heavy metals from acidic water streams is a popular and long standing treatment process. While this process is efficient it requires the continuous addition of an alkaline material, such as lime. In the long term or when treating large volumes of effluent this process becomes expensive, with costs in the mining sector routinely exceeding millions of rands annually. The process described below utilises alkalinity generated by the alga Spirulina sp., in a continuous system to precipitate heavy metals. The design of the system separates the algal component from the metal containing stream to overcome metal toxicity. The primary treatment process consistently removed over 99% of the iron (98.9 mg/l) and between 80 and 95% of the zinc (7.16 mg/l) and lead (2.35 mg/l) over a 14-day period (20 l effluent treated). In addition the pH of the raw effluent was increased from 1.8 to over 7 in the post-treatment stream. Secondary treatment and polishing steps depend on the nature of the effluent treated. In the case of the high sulphate effluent the treated stream was passed into an anaerobic digester at a rate of 4 l/day. The combination of the primary and secondary treatments effected a removal of over 95% of all metals tested for as well as a 90% reduction in the sulphate load. The running cost of such a process would be low as the salinity and nutrient requirements for the algal culture could be provided by using tannery effluent or a combination of saline water and sewage. This would have the additional benefit of treating either a tannery or sewage effluent as part of an integrated process.

- Description: A system known as the MIDINet system has been created, which routes MIDI messages between MIDI-compatible source and destination devices. These devices are attached to nodes which in turn are linked into an Ethernet network. Message routing is facilitated by the MIDINet protocol, which is a layer above standard Ethernet. The performance of the system has been measured and documented. In order to address the nondeterminism of Ethernet, a token bus protocol layer has been introduced between the Ethernet and MIDINet layers. The MIDINet system is being used to enhance MIDI routing in a music studio network where studio resources are shared between remote music stations.

- Description: This paper describes an ongoing investigation into the use of networking technology to provide access to shared music studio resources. The goal of the investigation is to see whether it is possible to provide remote, shared, and centralized access to studio resources. The investigation has followed an evolutionary path along which three configurations have been identified and completely or partially implemented. The configurations provide various paths for the flow of MIDI, audio, and studio control data.

- Description: From introduction: Topical corticosteroids are still the most widely used drugs in the treatment of dermatological conditions. Early corticosteroid dosage forms consisted of simple creams or ointments where more emphasis was placed on the potency of the drug molecule than on the intrinsic delivery potential of the vehicle. More recently, the effect that the composition of the semisolid base has on the extent of drug delivery has been researched to a much greater extent. These advances in the science of dosage form design have necessitated the refinement of precise and accurate methods for testing the drug delivery efficacies of the developed products. Obviously, the best method for the assessment of the effectiveness of corticosteroid formulations is in a therapeutic situation. Clinical trials, however, are fraught with methodological problems that make duplication of a trial impossible. Alternatively, a number of pharmacological models4 exist for this type of assessment, but it is often problematic to obtain correlation with the true dermatological conditions. The human skin blanching assay is one of the most reliable and reproducible of the ill vivo methods available for the assessment of topical corticosteroid formulations. The skin whitening (blanching or vasoconstriction) side-effect that follows corticosteroid application was first utilized in 1962 as a measure of the percutaneous absorption of corticosteroids from topical formulations. Optimization of this initial procedure7.s has produced a reliable and precise bioassay methodology for the assessment of the efficacy of topical corticosteroid formulations. One criticism of this assay has been the subjective nature of the observation procedure. Although these points have repeatedly been addressed in the literature, it has been suggested that it would be beneficial to have some ill vitro penetration data to supplement ill vivo observations, as this would strengthen the assessment of the topical equivalence of similar delivery formulations. With this objective in mind, a comparison of hydrocortisone release from two proprietary cream formulations was compared by in vivo and ill vitro techniques to determine if any correlation could be established between the methodologies.
