A framework to implement information security awareness, education and training within the Limpopo economic development agency group

- Description: Cybersecurity awareness, education and training of employees is key in reducing and preventing cyber-attack opportunities. The ignorance and/or lack of understanding of employees about the information security risks around them might expose the LEDA Group to cyber-attacks. This led to the problem that the level of awareness of employees regarding information security was not known. The implication of this not knowing was that an argument for the nature of an intervention to ensure awareness, as well as to educate and train employees regarding information security was not possible. The aim of this treatise was to develop a framework as an effective guideline for the implementation of cybersecurity awareness, education and training of employees. In the study, the LEDA Group employees were surveyed to determine their cybersecurity knowledge gap. An online questionnaire was randomly sent to 314 LEDA Group employees. The survey was voluntary and confidential. One hundred and thirty seven (137) employees completed the survey. The results of the survey were analysed to determine the gap between the current cybersecurity knowledge of the LEDA Group employees and state-of-the-art cybersecurity knowledge. The gap was used in the development of the framework for the implementation of the cybersecurity awareness, education and training (F-CSAET). Central to F-CSAET is the governance principles guided by best practices such as King IV, COBIT5, ISO27001, ISO27005, ISO27008 and ISO27032 and the compliance requirements to POPIA, the Copyright Act and the Cybercrimes and Cybersecurity Bill. The F-CSAET has six steps, namely Assess, Analyse, Create, Plan, Implement and Reinforce. The framework was evaluated for applicability by the team called the cyber security interest team, which was established specifically for the purpose of the F-CSAET.

- Description: Since 1994, South Africa has been revamping its higher education system as part of a broader national reform movement aimed at overcoming the inequities and divisions caused by the now obsolete apartheid regime (Sedgwick, 2004). This treatise firstly describes and then explores if students identify themselves with the EMC corporate identity. Thereafter, it firstly explores and then describes the corporate identity awareness level of EMC students. An exploratory-descriptive research design was used. The researcher used two types of data. One was secondary data and the other one was primary data. The former were collected by means of an extensive review of the related literature. The latter were obtained by means of online questionnaires. The level of brand awareness among students is considered to be low. - Description: The retention of knowledge workers has become an increasing challenge both locally and internationally. This study focusses on the factors contributing to the retention of knowledge workers at an Industrial Development Zone in the Eastern Cape. The aim of the study was to investigate the factors that would facilitate the retention of knowledge workers in the IDZ. This was explored through the employee value proposition framework which includes affiliation, career development, work content, compensation, company benefits, work-life balance and performance and recognition. The sample consisted of 30 employees from the IDZ from all business units. Three categories of employee levels were selected namely the executive managers, managers and specialists and professionals. Thematic analysis was used to analyse data which was gathered through semi-structured interviews. The literature reviewed explored the various retention strategies used by organisations. From the literature review it is realised that employee retention strategies vary from one organisation to another. In most cases they are very similar. Although this is the case, not all strategies will work for all organisations, each organisation requires preferred and unique strategies for its employees. The findings indicate that the majority of employees were satisfied with the employee value proposition dimensions in the organisation. The exceptional areas of satisfaction were retirement benefits, career development, performance recognition, relationships with colleagues, health benefits, relationships with direct manager or supervisor and relationships generally within the organisation. Areas of dissatisfaction were also raised on long service incentives, autonomy to do work, relationships with other business units and the performance review process. In order to retain employees at the IDZ, it is recommended that the organisation should focus on enhancing long service incentives. It is also recommended that employees should be given greater autonomy to do their work. Relationships with business units also need to be strengthened. Work-life balance of employees and performance review process also need to be revised.

- Description: It is becoming increasingly important for companies to be responsive to global demands and in order to remain competitive, many companies are looking at lean manufacturing to help them achieve this. Lean manufacturing is however more than just a set of tools as it also requires a change in the organisational culture of the company involved. The creation of an organisation that has a culture of continuous improvement and achieving results through its various principles and philosophies is a main factor in Toyota’s Toyota Way Model. It was the aim of this research study to analyse and determine the factors relating to the impact of an organisation’s culture on the concepts of lean manufacturing based on the Toyota Way model. This was achieved by analysing how conducive the current organisational culture at Freeworld Automotive Coatings to the implementation of Lean Manufacturing principles? The method used for the research study was the questionnaire method using a lean culture assessment questionnaire that has been designed by the researcher that was aligned to the principles important to the Toyota Way model. It can be concluded from the research findings of this study indicates that the existing organisational culture of Freeworld Automotive coatings is relatively conducive to the implementation of lean manufacturing principles within the company.

- Description: The concepts of editorial independence and public accountability are necessary in public broadcasting service as they help make a distinction between a public service broadcaster, a government and a commercial service broadcaster. This is because public service broadcasters are tasked with the responsibility of serving the interests of the general public. To do this, the above mentioned concepts have to be in place. This study examines these issues (editorial independence and public accountability) with reference to a case study of the editorial policies of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). Using public broadcasting theory, policy theory and qualitative research methods, the study examines the genesis of these editorial policies in 2003/2004 and how they provide the SABC with a means of balancing the tensions of editorial independence and public accountability. In analysing the SABC’s editorial policies, the study deals only with those policies whose principles are directly related to editorial independence and public accountability. Although some of these policies are found to be in line with public broadcasting service trends, others are found lacking. Various recommendations are made. The case study demonstrates the importance of an integrated and elaborated policy perspective in setting out how a public service broadcaster can manage editorial independence and public accountability. It also highlights the importance of using international ‘role models’ in ways that are appropriately adapted for the specific country concerned.
