The experiences of patients who absconded from psychiatric hospitals in the Eastern Cape

- Description: When patients abscond from the hospital, it is a taxing experience for everybody involved. The risk of harm to the patient is high. A small risk to the community also exits. This research aimed to explore and describe the experiences of psychiatric patients absconding from psychiatric institutions in the Eastern Cape. Data was collected making use of semi-structured interviews conducted with psychiatric patients that absconded. Data collected were analysed using Tech’s method of data analysis. The experiences and reasons for absconding identified were grouped into three main themes, namely biological factors, psychological factors and social factors. Fourteen sub-themes were identified. The fourteen sub-themes identified were correlated with Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. The participants expressed a number of unmet needs as motivation for their behaviour and the reason for absconding. A description of the profile of a psychiatric patient prone to absconding in the Eastern Cape was developed according to the demographic detail of the participants in this research. The research limitations are discussed. Recommendations were made from the findings to reduce absconding events in psychiatric institutions. Possible education and clinical practice recommendations were made, as well as recommendations provided for future related research. To ensure the quality of the study, the researcher made use of Guba’s four criteria to ensure trustworthiness. The researcher took special care to adhere to high ethical standards and protect the participants from exploitation.

- Description: Ports are the backbone of the economy of countries endowed with shorelines and they spearhead foreign trade through the importation and exportation of goods to and from their domestic markets. The newly constructed Port of Ngqura will be the outlet for exports of semi-finished and finished goods produced in the Coega IDZ and will also receive raw material to be processed. Its position at the center of the world’s main trade routes, equidistant from American, European and the Pacific Rim regions makes the Coega IDZ the ideal location for any manufacturer adding value to raw materials, components and producing goods bound for the world markets. Traditionally the ports have been developed and operated by the government enterprises. Recently all these are changing in many countries all over the world, with more private participation in the development and operations of the ports. This evolution has entrusted Port Authorities in taking control over port planning, broad regulation of shipping and port operations, applying conventions, laws and rules. South Africa is no exception to these winds of change, hence the adoption of the new port bill in managing all ports in the country. The Port of Ngqura will then serve as a benchmark for all other ports, with a new management structure which will help the port to be efficient. The study addresses the model for the efficient strategic management of the Port of Ngqura. The model looks into placing the Port of Ngqura ahead of its competitors through efficiency in port management and operations. Efficient ports are catalysts, facilitators and attractors of international sea borne trade. Competitive efficiency is achieved by employing the best suited port equipments, facilities and technology to cater for customer’s needs and requirements. A successful port must be able to constantly adopt new roles in order to cope with the ever changing market environment.

- Description: With global competition becoming a key concept in the majority of companies worldwide, it is necessary for organisations to develop operations strategies that enable them to meet their customers‘ needs. Organisations will never be capable of reaching future goals without their customers. For this reason it is imperative for organisations to identify what competitive factors are required by the market, and which performance objectives are needed in order to increase the competitiveness of the organisation. In this research, Chapters 1 and 2 were used to identify the main and subproblems of the research, to delimit the research and to provide literature background to operations strategies and related operations topics. The empirical study in Chapter 3 was used to gather information pertaining to the specific requirements of ESA’s customers, and the operations performanceof ESA. Chapter 4 was used to analyse the data gathered from the empirical study. From this analysis it was possible for the researcher to identify the specific requirements of ESA’s customers and the operations performance of ESA. Chapter 5 was used to provide recommendations to bridge the performance gap between the customer requirements and the operations performance of ESA. By effectively implementing all of the recommendations suggested in this research, ESA will be able to improve its operation performance and meet the specific requirements of its market and its customers.
