Factors affecting the success of corporate social responsibility programmes in South Africa

- Description: Corporate social investment expenditure by the private sector in South Africa for the 2016 / 2017 financial year realised R9 billion. As a developing country, South Africa has immense social development needs and understanding the scope of the problem becomes important when establishing how best to address it. The key players in the field of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) are the donors who provide the funding, the implementers of projects and the recipients who benefit from the interventions. Identifying critical success factors for implementing CSR projects is essential as this will contribute towards developing effective protocols and best practice in the field. The primary objective of this study was to contribute to the knowledge and operational understanding of CSR programmes in South Africa and to identify protocols to facilitate effective business implementation strategies for CSR. The study sought to answer the research question: What are the critical success factors for CSR programmes in South Africa? An empirical, quantitative study was conducted by surveying implementers of CSR projects in South Africa (n=81). The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationships between the independent variables, namely conceptualisation, implementation, reporting and evaluation, and the dependent variable, namely success of CSR. The empirical research was underpinned by stakeholder theory relating the practice of CSR to a multi-stakeholder context, and project management of life-cycle phases as the implementing arm of CSR projects. The key findings indicated that conceptualisation and implementation were positively and significantly related to success of CSR and that reporting, and evaluation had no significant relationship to success of CSR. Furthermore, recommendations were made to managers and implementers of CSR projects to facilitate and enhance the life-cycle phases of conceptualisation, implementation, reporting frameworks and evaluation of CSR projects.

A hybrid model for managing personal health records in South Africa

- Description: Doctors can experience difficulty in accessing medical information of new patients. One reason for this is that the management of medical records is mostly institution-centred. The lack of access to medical information may negatively affect patients in several ways. These include new medical tests that may need to be carried out at a cost to the patient and doctors prescribing drugs to which the patient is allergic. This research investigates how patients can play an active role in sharing their personal health records (PHRs) with doctors located in geographically separate areas. In order to achieve the goal of this research, existing literature concerning medical health records and standards was reviewed. A literature review of techniques that can be used to ensure privacy of health information was also undertaken. Interview studies were carried out with three medical practices in Port Elizabeth with the aim of contextualising the findings from the literature study. The Design Science Research methodology was used for this research. A Hybrid Model for Managing Personal Health Records in South Africa is proposed. This model allows patients to view their PHRs on their mobile phones and medical practitioners to manage the patients’ PHRs using a web-based application. The patients’ PHR information is stored both on a cloud server and on mobile devices hence the hybrid nature. Two prototypes were developed as a proof of concept; a mobile application for the patients and a web-based application for the medical practitioners. A field study was carried out with the NMMU health services department and 12 participants over a period of two weeks. The results of the field study were highly positive. The successful evaluation of the prototypes provides empirical evidence that the proposed model brings us closer to the realisation of ubiquitous access to PHRS in South Africa.

An evaluation of a performance management and development system with reference to the Department of the Premier, Provincial Government Western Cape

- Description: We are living in a changing world. Performance management is becoming a major challenge for organisations. The aim of this study is to review the current status of the Performance Management and Development System at the Department of the Premier and to look into the reasons why it has become a pain rather than a gain to both the organisation and its employees. This document will also look at the possible causes of the failure of the performance management system and will then propose useful guidelines to overcome obstacles to the benefit of all the affected parties. To achieve this objective a comprehensive literature study was performed to the Department of the Premier to determine the views on performance, and on performance management programmes. The study also included an investigation into the extent to which a performance management programme should be aligned with Provincial Government Western Cape (PGWC) and individual goals. Questionnaires developed from the literature study, were distributed amongst randomly selected respondents, in order to determine the extent to which a specific directorate manages performance, in line with the guidelines provided by the literature study. The information obtained from the questionnaires were compared with the guidelines provided by the literature study in order to identify shortcomings in the influence that the performance management programme has on the achievement of Department and individual goals at the selected Directorates. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of the current performance management system, in the Department at Provincial Government Western Cape, as a facilitation tool in aiding or assisting management in achieving individual and departmental goals. To achieve this objective a comprehensive literature study was performed to determine the views on performance, and on performance management systems. A questionnaire was designed based on the guidelines in the literature study, in order to establish the extent to which the organisation manages performance. The completed questionnaires were returned and these were processed and analysed using Microsoft Office Excel 2003, running on the Windows XP suite of computer packages. The respondent’s opinion obtained from the questionnaires were compared with the guidelines provided by the literature study in order to identify shortcomings of the influence that the performance management system has on the achievement of individual and departmental goals at the selected organization. The research results indicate that the majority of staff supports and understands the process.
