- Description: Illicit drug use is common among patients with mental health difficulties. Illicit drug use is common among patients with mental health difficulties. Psychiatric inpatient services often must provide care for people with mental health difficulties who use prohibited drugs. Admissions to an acute care hospital in the Eastern Cape are done daily, with as many as eight admissions per day. Statistics show that a significant percentage of these admissions are of patients with substance-induced psychosis. These patients are acutely mentally ill and may present with symptoms such as hearing voices, delusions, verbal, or physical aggression where they attack staff and other patients and being restless. Patients with a diagnosis of substance-induced psychosis are difficult to take care of due to their behaviour associated with the above symptoms. These patients are also young and because they are psychotic, they make the acute wards unruly, making it difficult to nurse them. The following research question arises from the above-mentioned problem: What are the experiences of registered nurses working in a tertiary psychiatric hospital with patients admitted with a diagnosis of substance-induced psychosis? The goal of this study is to explore and describe the experiences of registered nurses working in a tertiary psychiatric hospital when caring for patients admitted with substance-induced psychosis. The researcher used a qualitative, exploratory, descriptive, and contextual design. The research population consisted of registered nurses working at a tertiary psychiatric hospital. Purposive sampling was used to identify participants. Data was collected by means of one-to-one interviews and field notes. Data was analysed using Tesch’s model of content analysis to reduce the information to themes or categories. The researcher used Guba’s model of trustworthiness to evaluate the study’s rigour. The researcher also used the three fundamental ethical principles which include: the principle of respect for persons, the principle of beneficence and non-maleficence, and the principle of justice to guide the researcher during the research process. Four main themes with subthemes emerged from the study. The study showed that registered nurses working in a psychiatric hospital found it difficult to nurse patients with substance-induced psychosis. These difficulties included the characteristics these patients presented with, the ward not being conducive to nursing substanceinduced psychotic patients, which resulted in registered nurses feeling emotionally drained when nursing these patients. Recommendations were made as an effort to help registered nurses cope better in caring for substance-induced psychotic patients and prevent staff from experiencing burnout.

- Description: In general there is very little research on the coping styles that the fathers of children suffering from Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) use in order to cope with the day-to-day demands and stressors that result from their child‘s unique condition. The research study focuses on the fathers of children on the autistic spectrum and how they cope with the stressors resulting from their children‘s condition on daily basis. The study made use of Bronfenbrenner‘s Ecosystemic Theory of Human Development as the guiding theoretical framework in exploring and describing this specific research domain. This was a qualitative study and it was phenomenological, descriptive and analytical in nature. The reason for this was to hear the voices of the fathers and explore in-depth how they deal with the daily stressors resulting from their children‘s condition. Semi-structured interviews were utilised where the fathers were asked to respond to an open-ended question. The data that was obtained from the fathers was analysed by means of content analysis. The sample size of the study was small (n=5) and other limitations included a small number of previous studies done on the fathers of children on the autistic spectrum. The literature that is available that focused on the fathers of ASD children are often old and might possibly be out dated. However, this study aimed to hear the voices of the fathers of children on the autistic spectrum and explore how they cope with the daily stressors. Therefore, this study will contribute to the literature on the fathers of ASD children.

- Description: The purpose of this study is to identify why and how the females are marginalized in senior positions. This qualitative case study explores the experiences of women leaders as school principals in Rural Secondary Schools of Butterworth District. It was undertaken in two conveniently selected Rural Secondary Schools of Butterworth that are led by female principals. The data was collected through the use of interviews. This data was collected directly from the female principals. The findings of this study clearly identified that gender has more effectively worked against the women’s success as leaders. Females start to encounter a challenge from even being shortlisted for the senior positions and that becomes worse in being appointed as leaders. Even those few women appointed as leaders are being undermined by fellow colleagues as well as communities around them. It was recommended that in order to improve women representation in educational leadership, great efforts must be made in addressing a number of issues. A significant step would be to disseminate law on gender equality widely written throughout the country to raise public awareness about gender issues. Women should be encouraged and supported to participate in leadership. Also women should be prepared by being offered leadership preparation and leadership programmes so that they feel more self-confident and function effectively once appointed.

- Description: In South Africa, reform policies and frameworks introduced since the 1994 democratic election have sought to bring about change to a highly ineffective and unfair system. In spite of all the changes which have occurred, however, there is evidence to suggest that the system is still not functioning as effectively as it might, given that a relatively large number of graduates remain unemployed in a country with a high skills shortage. This thesis aims to explore the experiences of graduates from one university, Rhodes University in the Eastern Cape, as they enter the job market. It does this through the administration of a first job destination survey administered at the 2009 Graduation Ceremonies held in Grahamstown. Analysis of the survey takes into account the idea that it is not a degree per se, or even a degree from a prestigious university which brings employment, but also the social, cultural and human capital that graduates can bring to their job search.

Assessing the implementation of the performance management system in the Malawian civil service : an application of the Burke and Liwin model

- Description: The research assessed the implementation of the Performance Management System (PMS) in the Malawian civil service using a change diagnostic model called ‘causal model of organisational performance change’ by Burke and Litwin (1992). The motivation for the research topic comes from a background of the Malawi Government’s goal of improving service delivery to the public. The government launched the performance management system as one of the change interventions that would assist in achieving its service provision goal. For the achievement of the service provision goals, the PMS had to be implemented effectively. Using an integrative approach, the research employed both qualitative and quantitative methods to obtain data that was structured around the organisational elements of the Burke-Litwin model. Using purposive sampling, 195 departments in the Malawian Civil Service formed the population from which the sample was drawn. Of the 195 departments, 69 departments, represented by an officer from each department, participated in the study. Three departments namely; The Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC), The Department of Human Resource Management and Development (DHRMD) and The Civil Service Commission (CSC) were included in the sample in addition to the 69 departments. These three departments were chosen due to their involvement in the formulation and implementation of the Performance Management System (PMS). Information from the three departments was obtained through interviews while questionnaires were administered to the remaining sample subjects. The research found that both the transformational and transactional factors were lacking in supporting the implementation of the PMS in Malawian civil service. Fundamental prerequisites like systems’ compatibility, assessment of enabling culture and amendments of relevant laws were not considered before the implementation of the system. Upon commencement of the implementation process the support from political leaders and donors declined and the evaluation process lacked inclusion of key stakeholders. The current research expands the application of the Burke-Litwin model in assessing the ‘post change intervention’ implementation processes. The findings could possibly provide valuable input in the form of the following recommendations: The government should consider working on the culture of the civil servants, the capacity of the implementing structure of PMS, the evaluation of the PMS and the prerequisites for the programme. The government should consider being inclusive when evaluating PMS and in assessing the performance of employees, and lastly, there is need to fully utilise technology and the functional position of stakeholders like the Civil Service Commission.
