- Description: Since the adoption and implementation of the South African Schools Act of (1996), School Governing Bodies (SGBs) have been provided with the powers to recommend the employment of teachers in schools. Moreover, SGBs are also required to have an impact on the promotion of diversity in schools through the employment of teachers in a non-discriminatory way. However, two decades since SASA of 1996, Foundation Phase teaching remains dominated by females. Literature in the South African context posits that gendered schooling practices still exist in the differentiated opportunities of the employment of teachers. Particularly male teachers eager to teach in the foundation phase in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and North West Province. The study sought to explore the perceptions of SGB members towards foundation phase male teachers in the Eastern Cape schools. This study employed Participatory Visual Research Methodologies (PVRM), as its research design and was underpinned by the critical paradigm. It utilised a participatory method, collages and a focus group discussion to generate data with five SGB members from three purposively selected schools in the Eastern Cape. The study utilised a feminist post-structural theory in the analysis of findings. The findings revealed three themes, which are; (1) Males are not seen as good caregivers, (2) Foundation phase male teachers are seen as multifaceted and lastly (3) Male teachers are seen as not suitable for Foundation Phase teaching. Each of the above findings offers recommendations to the following stakeholders, the Department of Basic Education (DBE), Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and for future research.

- Description: The purpose of this qualitative research study is to comment on the visual representation of women between the ages of twenty and thirty within white contemporary Afrikaans culture. This will be achieved through an analysis of stereotypes evident in Afrikaner culture. Examples of this include but are not limited to the text and visuals in the Goeie Maniere en Etiket (1981) book by Emsie Schoeman and dated Afrikaans magazine issues by Huisgenoot (Issue XLII, 2 June 1961) and Sarie Marais (Issue 17/19, 30 March 1966). Interviews were conducted with five white young Afrikaner women using a collaborative approach, to gain a better understanding of the influences that cultural and visual stereotypes have on an individual. The research aims to comment on how the emerging post-apartheid generation of young Afrikaner women are responding to the cultural expectations and engaging with their Afrikaner identity in the way they choose to represent themselves through tableau portrait photography. The study is based on a practice-based research method, which encompasses two components: a written output and a practical output. These function as a unity, where the written component guides the development of the practical body of work. The written document provides the foundation and framework in which the practical work functions, creating a conceptual framework that guides the process of collaboration between the visual artist and subject to construct a contemporary visual representation that focuses on how young Afrikaner women react to traditional cultural roles and develop an understanding of self. The study makes use of Gillian Rose’s visual analysis framework as a critical analysis tool to determine the visual representation that emerges from the collaboration between the visual artist and the subject. Ultimately, the aim of this research is to facilitate the potential for the subject to critically engage with visual identity by collaborating with the visual artist. This research presents a unique approach to communicate an evolving post-apartheid identity and has contributed to an understanding of the feminine identity construction of the emerging Afrikaner generation in a democratic South Africa.

Therefore, it can be seen from this study that it is critical for business owners and management to be innovative in their business to achieve competitive advantage and, as such, remain sustainable. Stakeholder relationships are critical to achieving a competitive advantage. Financial Analysis, Technology Management, Innovation, Organisational Design and Risk Management are interrelated and are very inter-dependent when seeking to avoid business failure. However, innovation and technology management have a significant influence on business failure and, as such, are critical to the success of the business.

Biological activity of macrofungi in South Africa against respiratory and lung disease

- Description: Macrofungi represent an untapped source of natural bioactive compounds for various diseases, which have been targeted as potential therapeutic agents. The medicinal uses of macrofungi discovered to date include anticancer, antidiabetic, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and immunomodulatory properties. The knowledge regarding the medicinal uses of macrofungi in Africa is limited; however, it is believed that Africa may contain a large number of unidentified species of macrofungi. The objectives of this study were to: (i) screen the macrofungal extracts for antimicrobial activity against microorganisms responsible for respiratory diseases (e.g. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, HIV-1), (ii) determine the effect of macrofungal extracts on bacterial morphology, (iii) investigate the cytotoxicity of macrofungal extracts against human lung carcinoma cells, and to elucidate the mechanism/s of action of cytotoxicity/anticancer activity. In vitro bioassays for antimicrobial activity included: ρ-iodonitrotetrazolium chloride assays and microplate alamar blue assay (MABA), while the HIV-1 reverse transcriptase colorimetric ELISA and HIV-1 protease fluorometric assay kits were used for anti-HIV activity. Cytotoxicity of the macrofungal species against A549 lung cancer cell line was measured using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, and the IC50 values determined for the most cytotoxic macrofungal spp. The mechanism of cytotoxicity was investigated by cell cycle analysis and fluorescent staining to observe morphological and biochemical changes (i.e. acridine orange, caspase activation). Ethanol extracts of Amanita foetidissima, Gymnopilus junonius, Pisolithus tinctorius, Fomitopsis lilacinogilva, Stereum hirsutum and Pycnoporus sanguineus showed higher antimicrobial activity against the Gram-positive bacteria than aqueous extracts, with S. pneumoniae being the most susceptible. The ethanol extracts of Agaricus campestris, Chlorophyllum molybdites, Gymnopilus penetrans, Pseudophaeolus baudonii and Laetiporus sulphureus exhibited anti-TB (tuberculosis) activity with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) ranging between 500-1,000 μg/mL. C. molybdites ethanol extract inhibited HIV-1 protease activity (IC50: 49.7 μg/mL). The macrofungal extracts did not inhibit HIV-1 reverse transcriptase activity. Ethanol extracts of F. lilacinogilva, G. junonius, P. sanguineus and the aqueous extract iv of P. baudonii were cytotoxic against A549 lung cancer cells at IC50 values of 69.2±3.6, 57±5, 7.4±1.1 and 53.6±1.1 μg/mL, respectively. Cell cycle arrest was observed in the G2 phase for both P. sanguineus and P. baudonii, and G2/M and early M phases for G. junonius and F. lilacinogilva, respectively. Apoptosis induced by macrofungal extracts was confirmed by fluorescent staining. Morphological and biochemical changes included chromatin condensation, membrane blebbing, loss of cytoskeletal structure, caspase activation and phosphatidylserine translocation. This study demonstrates the biological activities of selected macrofungal extracts and their potential mechanisms of action. Isolation and identification of active compounds require further analysis.

- Description: Rationale: It cannot be denied that there has been improvement in demographic representation in South Africa since the implementation of the Employment Equity Act 55 of 1998. Whilst there may still be room for improvement, especially on employer attitudes towards the implementation of employment equity, improved representation of the Previously Disadvantaged Groups has evidently appreciated, however, marginally. Research purpose: This study sought to explore stakeholder perceptions as to why Engcobo Local Municipality had not successfully implemented the Employment Equity Act. Research design, approach and method: This exploratory study was conducted at Engcobo Local Municipality on Councillors, Managers, Key Employees and representatives of Organised Labour. Main findings: a) Engcobo Local Municipality was found not to have complied with various aspects of the Employment Equity Act; b) Respondents mainly believed that failure to implement the Employment Equity Act by Engcobo Local Municipality was due to lack of capacity on the part of the municipality‟s stakeholders; c) Different countries followed different models in the implementation of their Employment Equity, depending on the peculiarity of their circumstances; and d) The most appropriate change management model on which the implementation of the South African Employment Equity is modelled is Hayes‟ Generic Change Management Model. Managerial implications: Future research may be that the municipality can benefit from the recommendations made by the respondents with regard to what they believe needs to be done to remedy the situation. Some of the suggestions include the intensification of communication, establishment consultative structures to facilitate communication and the capacitation of stakeholders to ensure that they understand their responsibilities regarding the implementation of the Employment Equity Act. Contribution: The contribution of the research is supporting the current knowledge base of stakeholders towards the implementation of the Employment Equity Act. Proactive implementation measures should be taken to ensure that people who should benefit from the implementation of the Act are not disadvantaged by the municipality‟s failure to implement the Act. The introduction of the alignment with human resource management practices that complement the implementation of Employment Equity, could overcome the barriers currently being experienced in the effective implementation of the Employment Equity Act.

- Description: Technology and the boom of the internet have encouraged people to connect with each other, share information and build relationships (Stelzner, 2009; 2010) and the social web has presented a new form of communication through social media which allow people to interact and converse with each other (Evans, 2010). This presents marketers with the opportunity to affect consumers purchase decisions through online marketing and social media. This social engagement by consumers has significant impact on marketing activities as marketers need to be aware of the factors affecting consumer’s purchase decision (Evans, 2010). Continental Tyre South Africa (CTSA), a local tyre manufacturer, is embarking on a social media marketing strategy. No other local tyre manufacturer has a presence on social media platforms. As a result CTSA would have first mover advantage. The main objective of the research that follows is to establish if South African tyre purchasers are supportive of social media as an online research tool to learn more about tyre brands. The significance of this research study is that marketing communications has taken on a different dimension with the growth of online market places and the natural step for CTSA is to engage in social media marketing. The literature review revealed that many modern consumers sought peer advice over social networks thus social media has promoted consumer-to-consumer communication and has made it possible for consumers and brands to interact with each other (Mangold and Faulds, 2009). It was concluded that whilst social media marketing presents marketers with a more cost effective form of marketing, further research regarding South African’s online purchasing activities would be required to assess if the time, money and resources required to manage social media marketing for CTSA would be beneficial to the organisation. As a result a qualitative empirical study was conducted by means of a questionnaire. The research elements were broken down into three segments; the internet and social media, consumer-brand engagement and online iv recommendations. The research revealed that social media marketing is an appropriate strategy for CTSA. The main findings further revealed that CTSA would need to engage in an aggressive traditional marketing campaign in order to drive consumers to engage in the social media campaigns. Strategies must include dedicated social media fan pages, online banners, and online advertisements. Based on the research analysis it is recommended that that most appropriate social media platforms for CTSA to launch social media marketing activities are Facebook and Twitter.
