- Description: The global working environment has transformed significantly over the last two decades, with rapid advancements in technology and information as well as the levels of diversity in the workplace. This process of adaptation, the failure to adapt or weaknesses in adaptation can be an underlying cause of conflict within organizations. For an organization to be successful, there must be effective conflict management techniques in place in order to resolve or keep the conflict at a minimum. The aim of this exploratory case study was to therefore explore the management of conflict between employees in an Information Technology company in Johannesburg. The human needs theory, which states that the deprivation of human needs is a major source of conflict, was used as the theoretical framework guiding this study. A mixed methods approach, also known as methodological triangulation, was used, which involved combining qualitative and quantitative research methods in order to achieve triangulation of data. The qualitative research method that was used comprised individual semi-structured interviews with two Human Resources managers and the quantitative research method involved the completion of self-administered questionnaires by 94 employees of the IT company. The researcher used a purposive sampling design for the interviews and simple random sampling for the questionnaires. Ethics permission for this research was received from Nelson Mandela University’s Research Ethics Committee and the study was conducted in accordance with the university’s Policy on Research Ethics. The findings of this study have revealed that the type of conflict mainly experienced in this organization was employee conflict, due to interpersonal clashes relating to personality differences. The employees were unanimous that conflict can have both a positive and negative effect. The interviews confirmed that the IT company makes use of negotiation and mediation to resolve workplace conflict, with the literature review providing evidence that negotiation and mediation are useful means of managing conflict between employees. However, the results from the completed questionnaires revealed that employees attempt to manage conflict by avoiding the conflict, which could be due to employees having limited awareness of the organization’s procedures to address conflict. This study can therefore potentially be beneficial to organizations and assist the latter in developing conflict management skills and practices, which can enhance organizational performance, productivity and employee retention.

- Description: This study is focused on Advanced Programme English (AP English), which is an additional subject registered through the Independent Examinations Board. The subject is aimed at grades ten to twelve and it is dedicated to the study of English literature. This study explores the AP English experience from the learner perspective, thus it highlights the potential opportunities of learner participation in AP English. In a traditional school context, emphasis is placed on assessment. As a response to this achievement driven focus, this study instead seeks to understand the social context of AP English, and the way in which the AP English experience has been integrated into the learners’ lives. The focus of this study is to understand the AP English perspective through the lens of identity, and the way in which identity permeates all experiences of AP English as a whole. The construction of identity is explored through the activities of reading and writing. These are integral to the AP English experience. By incorporating a number of different perspectives from educational and literary spheres to make sense of the AP English experience, this study broadens conceptualisations of the learner perspective. It also complements traditional conceptualisations of education by including commentary from a diverse range of voices. This study characterises AP English as an alternative space that has the potential to provide a sense of belonging for its learners. The AP English social context offers learners the opportunity to construct their identities in relation to the literature they study, and to their classmates. This meaningful learner engagement may provide learners with the space and freedom to construct their identities in an authentic, self-reflexive manner. Various theories on identity support how AP English can provide a platform for learners to inhabit multiple voices or perspectives. By using literature as a reference point, learners have the opportunity to make sense of themselves through a multiplicity of perspectives. This study therefore provides insight into the way AP English might facilitate a flexible approach to conceptualising identity, which is often overlooked in the education context, thus this study advocates the AP English experience as an important aspect of identity construction. On a larger scale, it places the learner perspective at the forefront, and in this way offers an alternative conceptualisation to traditional, assessment focused schooling methods.

Microalgae and macrophytes as indicators of ecological health in the Great Brak Estuary

- Description: The Great Brak temporarily open/closed estuary was subjected to a drought during the spring and summer of 2009/2010 resulting in the mouth remaining closed for a prolonged period. According to the Great Brak Estuary management programme, the mouth of the estuary had to be open for a total of 308 days during spring and summer of 2009/2010, respectively, but was closed for almost the entire two years (693 days). The aim of this study was to assess monthly changes in the abiotic characteristics (salinity, temperature, oxygen, pH and nutrients) and the biotic responses of phytoplankton and macroalgae; identify sources of nutrient input into the estuary and determine the response of the salt marsh to water level and salinity changes. The results indicated that physico-chemical parameters were similar to that previously recorded during the closed mouth condition. However mouth closure combined with elevated nutrient concentrations led to a shift from rooted submerged macrophytes to one where either microalgae or macroalgae were dominant. Soluble reactive phosphorus concentrations were significantly higher in bottom compared with surface waters. There was a significant negative correlation with SRP and dissolved oxygen for the sampling period indicating potential release of phosphorus from the sediment during closed mouth conditions. Microalgal biomass increased in response to remineralised nutrients and freshwater pulses. Flagellates were the dominant microalgal group (21718 ± 3336 cells m l-1, p < 0.05) because of their morphological ability to migrate vertically within the water column. The macroalgal cover was highest during the closed mouth state but only during winter (August 2010) when temperatures were below 20 oC. Five major point sources of nutrient input into the Great Brak Estuary were identified during rainfall periods. Point sources 4 and 5 in the upper reaches of the estuary had the highest DIN input whereas point source 3 in the middle reaches of the estuary had the highest DIP input. As a result of the drought and low water level, the salt marsh was never inundated for longer than 3 months. Die-back of Sarcocornia decumbens (r 2= -0.62, p < 0.05) was related to smothering by dead macroalgae whereas dieback of Sporobolus virginicus was related to decreasing nutrient (r2 = 0.59, p < 0.05) and salinity (r2 = 0.55, p < 0.05) levels. The physico-chemical characteristics alone did not convey the true health status of the Great Brak Estuary for the duration of the sampling (April 2010-April 2011). The study showed that microalgae and macroalgae are valuable indicators of the status of the estuary. Therefore it is suggested that bio-indicators are incorporated into the management/monitoring plan in order to assist in improving the health assessment of the Great Brak Estuary.
