In practice the focus of recruitment is often solely concerned with the person-job fit in so far as hard-skills of the individual applicants are relevant and suitable to the position that must be filled. It is the belief of the researcher in this treatise that a more holistic approach in filling leadership roles most be adopted in order to increase the successful placement of leaders based not only on the person-job fit, but also on the person-team and person-organisation fit. Certain leadership brands are more suitable in certain environments and this must be tested for as part of the recruitment and placement process. This qualitative case study is exploratory in nature and hopes to gain a deeper understanding of predictive capability of the NBI in relation to leadership branding.

This study is specifically concerned with the effect of leadership and staff capacity on the implementation of gender mainstreaming. The study was aimed at improving how the local government approaches gender mainstreaming and shed light on how it can be used as an all-inclusive developmental strategy. The data for this study were collected through document analysis and purposively selected in-depth interviews. The subjects of the study were selected from strategic units within the municipality which were identified to be the key stakeholders in gender mainstreaming in terms of the institutional arrangements. The results illustrate that despite a commitment to gender mainstreaming in the OR Tambo District Municipality, the institution still faces many challenges in its implementation. These challenges are linked to the absence of an institutional gender mainstreaming policy, poor understanding of gender mainstreaming and sectoral institutional arrangements that hinder the process of implementation. The data confirmed that a lack of skilled human resources hinders the implementation of gender mainstreaming.

The key drivers of grain commodity prices in South Africa: a market intelligence approach

- Description: Grain forms a staple part of the majority of the global populations’ diets and it is used a raw material for animal feed in many countries. The envisaged increase in population in years to come can be expected to increase the demand of grain globally. Grain production is expected to fulfil energy requirements since developed countries are increasingly utilising grain as an alternative energy source to reduce the negative environmental effects caused by energy derived from fossil fuels. The grain value chain in South Africa consists of grain producers, input suppliers, millers and processors, as well as traders and speculators. The majority of the grain producers in South Africa are commercial farmers who play an important role in the economy of the country. South Africa trades their grain commodities on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange where grain prices are controlled by different social, economic and political factors. This gives rise to grain commodity price volatility because of its sensitivity to market changes. This study focuses on the difficulty faced by the grain producers and stakeholders in the value chain, like traders and speculators, who are exposed to price related risks as a result of the volatility of the grain commodity. It presents the current mitigation strategies that are available to hedge against these risks. Research shows that the current mitigation strategies are not being fully utilised by the grain producers because of their lack of skills and the time to search through and make sense of the datasets on the abundance of factors that influence the grain commodities market. This study presents a market intelligence approach as a solution to the grain volatility price risk. Market intelligence is utilised to enable the prediction of grain prices and to discover the factors that are driving the market at different periods. This is achieved by utilising neural networks and relative importance statistical techniques. In this study, it was found that the impact of the different factors changes from time to time. It proposed a technique for making sense of the changes in the prices of grain commodities. A framework for the implementation of market intelligence to mitigate against price volatility risks is proposed as an output of this study. The impact of the findings of this study to the grain producers and stakeholders in the value chain is that they can have insight on which factor is driving the market at a given period. This would enable then to adjust their activities and enable increased profitability.

- Description: The term automotive industry is an umbrella term for concerns and undertakings contributing to the manufacturing of motor vehicles. This includes components such as engines, electronics, harnesses, interiors and shells, but excludes consumables such as tires, batteries and fuel. The local automotive industry is one of South Africa’s most profitable industries, funding more than 7% of the country’s GDP and contributing towards almost 12% of South Africa's manufacturing exports. Many multinational automotive manufacturers have invested in South Africa. This has allowed them to be strategically placed with the intention to source components, assemble and produce vehicles locally for the South African and other world markets. Due to the current contributions and its potential to grow the South African economy, the South African administration has recognised the automotive industry as an important sector. The South African government introduced the Motor Industry Development Programme during 1994 and the Automotive Production and Development Programme since 2013 to further stimulate the market and investment and further aims to increase the local production of vehicles to 1.2 million units per year as part of its 2020 vision. When considering the global competition, from China and Eastern Europe, it is imperative for the South African manufacturers to pursue and implement innovative practices to ensure that they can be competitive in the global arena, to retain and attract more multinational manufacturers to invest in the country and to ensure the future of existing multinational manufacturing facilities. Many scholars agree that intrapreneurship, also known as corporate entrepreneurship, is an approach which has the ability to help organisations to be more innovative and can guarantee competitiveness. Intrapreneurship is a valid and important aspect of entrepreneurial research. The subject of intrapreneurship can be divided into several key areas: 1. The individual operating as an intrapreneur within an organisation, focusing on his or her traits and the acknowledgement and support received within the organisation; 2. The conceptualisation and implementation of innovative projects from inside the organisation, focusing on the different departments and business units within the organisation’s corporate structure; 3. The entrepreneurial organisation, focusing on the core characteristics of the organisation. This study explores the concept of intrapreneurship, by consulting existing literature and then measuring the levels of intrapreneurship at a German automotive manufacturing plant in the Eastern Cape. To ensure anonymity of the organisation in which the study is conducted, it will be referred to as Company X. Currently no studies focused on intrapreneurship have been conducted within Company X. Innovative practices are not demonstrated as much as desired at the local manufacturing plant of company X and the levels of intrapreneurship within the manufacturing plant are currently still unknown. With the automotive industry being such an important contributor to the South African economy, it might be beneficial to do a similar study pertaining to multiple companies within the industry and value chain. This can assist in creating a bigger awareness within the industry, so that the affected organisations can have a more intrapreneurial approach towards business. The study can furthermore be adapted to consider a more technical approach of production facilities within South Africa and the intrapreneurial approach and innovations implemented to insure productivity and future investments, locally and international, within the production sector of South Africa.

- Description: South African employees have found a wide range of stressors prevalent in their working experience. The impact of these stressors on the lives of the employees adversely affects the organisational effectiveness of any organisation. The 21st century business world has become more stressful and risky because of the daily workplace demands, coupled with internal competitive challenges, placed on employees. The effect of this stress on employees is seen in an increase in absenteeism, a loss in employee productivity, increased insurance premiums, reduced workforce efficiency and an increase in training and employment costs. As a result, organisations are compelled to commit their management team to ensuring their employees health and wellness. This can be achieved through the implementation of a structured wellness programme or policy. This study's intention, forming the main problem, was to determine the wellness programmes that would be required by the pharmaceutical company, Bodene (Pty) Ltd, in order to enhance, maintain and develop its organisational wellness. This resulted in the development of a wellness programme. The approach taken to resolve this problem began with an intensive literature survey to determine the critical wellness factors that literature indicated as necessary for employees to be successful and happy in their work environments and outside of them. This was followed by an empirical study undertaken within the Small Volume Parenteral department of the organisation. The study was undertaken by the administration of a structured employee questionnaire to blue collar workers and a select number of middle managers in order to determine the level of wellness present amongst the employees. In addition, a structured management questionnaire was administered to the Sister-on-site and the Industrial Relations manager in order to determine whether any wellness programmes currently existed within the organisation, the extent to which they had been implemented, the extent to which they are successful within the organisation and the role, if any, that management play in actively promoting employee wellness. Among the main findings, on the negative side, the study revealed that employees within the department are close-lipped when it comes to revealing information of a personal nature. This has resulted in a difficulty in assessing their sexual and financial wellness, in particular. With regards to management, findings revealed that the employees felt that there is not enough trust between the employee and management. It was also indicated that management is not as open as possible with the employees. In addition, employees indicated that they felt that there was a lack of communication among team members as well as various forms of discrimination existing in the organisation. On the positive side, the study has indicated that a respect for all cultures exists within the organisation. It has also indicated that a minimal amount of conflict is experienced between superiors and subordinates and that the majority of employees feel a sense of belonging within the organisation. Findings from the literature survey undertaken and the empirical study done within the organisation were integrated and a coherent organisational wellness programme was developed. The organisational wellness programme has been recommended to the management of Bodene (Pty) Ltd. If the programme is considered viable, it will be implemented within the organisation.
