Possible futures for the health system of South Africa towards 2030

- Description: The South African health system is in crisis. To improve access to health services and move towards universal health coverage the South African government has decided to implement National Health Insurance (NHI). The implementation of such health reforms to the health system of SA is further complicated by the rapidly changing technological environment in the form of the fourth industrial revolution. The NHI and the fourth industrial revolution are expected to impact on the health system of the country, but what the impacts will be remain unclear. A review of the theory and practice of future studies support the notion that change management for healthcare organisations operating within the SA health system must be approached differently. The volatility introduced by the NHI within the context of the fourth industrial revolution necessitates the creation of strategic foresight using futures methodologies. The research has attempted to gain an understanding of the impact of National Health Insurance and the fourth industrial revolution on the health system of SA through the creation of possible futures for the health system, in the form of four alternative scenarios, towards 2030. The six pillars of future studies as stated by Inayatullah (2008) were used as a research methodology and assisted in the mapping, anticipation and timing of the issues facing the health system. The future was deepened using causal layered analysis and alternative futures were constructed through double-variable scenario creation methods using the worldviews identified during the causal layered analysis. From the constructed scenarios the research attempted to identify the preferred future for the health system of South Africa. The preferred future was used in the development of the Future Vision for the Health System of South Africa towards 2030. It is clear to achieve the desired health system towards 2030 the private and the public sectors must collaborate to create a hybrid health system which is supported by fourth industrial revolution technologies.

Intelligence based error detection and classification for 3D measurement systems

- Description: For many years 2D machine vision has been used to perform automated inspection and measuring in the manufacturing environment. A strong drive to automate manufacturing has meant improvements in robotics and sensor technologies. So has machine vision seen a steady movement away from 2D and towards 3D. It is necessary to research and develop software that can use these new 3D sensing equipment in novel and useful ways. One task that is particularly useful, for a variety of situations is object recognition. It was hypothesised that it should be possible to train artificial neural networks to recognise 3D objects. For this purpose a 3D laser scanner was developed. This scanner and its software was developed and tested first in a virtual environment and what was learned there was then used to implemented an actual scanner. This scanner served the purpose of verifying what was done in the virtual environment. Neural networks of different sized were trained to establish whether they are a feasible classifier for the task of object recognition. Testing showed that, with the correct preprocessing, it is possible to perform 3D object recognition on simple geometric shapes by means of artificial neural networks.

- Description: Creativity is seen as the driving force behind innovation. It can even be said to be the same process. It is critical to implement the creativity in order for innovation to actually take place. This combination of creativity and innovation is required for economic growth, sustainability, continuous improvement and competitive edge for organisations. Creativity is more than just artistic ability but includes scientific and problem solving steps and basic everyday creativity. This combination would be key in government departments, organisations and universities today. People’s perception on creativity could hamper their growth and development in this key area, not only for themselves but of others that they come into contact with. People’s perception on creativity is that it is either a genius form in either artistic or musical terms or it is not at all creative. They do not necessarily view the everyday tasks as creative. The research approach for this study is positivistic and deductive. The students’ perception of creativity is gathered using a quantitative questionnaire, where they rank their perceptions. The questionnaire was from an international study and it was made available to all students at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. The data analysis will be both descriptive and inferential in nature. The research seeks to examine students’ perception of their own creativity and how they rate various creative products or services. Students are on their way to the pinnacle in their fields and the creativity should therefore be at its peak to be able to take full advantage and to get maximum benefit from it. The research will gain insight into their perception via a questionnaire where they need to rate themselves. The literature review will investigate creativity, innovation and the links between them. It will analyse the importance of innovation to business and the unlocking of creativity. There are many differing ways to unlock and stimulate creativity and some of these are addressed.
