Integrating well-known adsorbents with photocatalysts ensures that all the interesting components are preserved and helps to overcome the serious downsides of each material and technique when operated independently. In this work, we introduce a new concept of combining both absorption and photodegradation mechanisms using organic photocatalytic adsorbents for water purification. This was achieved by formulating photosensitizing hybrids based on a newly synthesized chloroindium (III) 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-acetamidophenyl) porphyrin (InTAAP) compound, anchored on oxygen functionalized coconut shell-based activated carbon granules supports. The fashioned integrated photocatalyst adsorbent hybrid (InTAAP(ACO)) was then studied for their adsorption and photodegradation efficiency using methylene blue dye, where InTAAP(ACO) showed excellent photocatalytic activity compared to ACO and unfunctionalized activated carbon granules (AC), with appreciably high and adsorption properties as AC and ACO.

We herein report the synthesis, photophysical properties, and PACT activity of 2-hydroxypyridine axial ligated indium 5,10,15,20-tetrakis-(4-phenylmethylthio) porphyrin (3) and quaternized 2-hydroxypyridine axial ligated indium 5,10,15,20-tetrakis-(4-phenylmethylthio) porphyrin (4). The porphyrin complexes (3 and 4) were further linked to oleyamine (OLM)/oleic acid (OLA) capped Ag/CuFe2O4 and also 6-mercapto-1-hexanol functionalized (MCH-Ag/CuFe2O4) nanoparticles through silver - sulphur (Ag-S) and silver-nitrogen (Ag-N); self-assembly. The PACT studies were carried out using Staphylococcus aureus. While all the synthesized porphyrins demonstrated PACT activity, the quaternized complex and its conjugate showed the highest PACT activity with 0% cell viability after irradiation for 25 min, resulting in a log reduction of 8.31.

- Description: GaCl 5,10,15,20-Tetra(1-pyrenyl)porphyrin (GaClTPyP) was successfully synthesised and encapsulated into Pluronic F127. The unmetallated 5,10,15,20-tetra(1-pyrenyl)porphyrin (H2TPyP) precursor was also encapsulated into Pluronic F127. The fluorescence quantum yield for GaClTPyP at 0.045 was lower than that of H2TPyP at 0.13 due to the heavy atom effect of Ga in the former which encourages intersystem crossing to the triplet state, lowering the fluorescence. Fluorescence quantum yield values increased when GaClTPyP or H2TPyP were encapsulated in Pluronic F127. GaClTPyP/Pluronic F127 showed higher values of the binding constant (Kb) as well as Stern-Volmer constant (Ksv) when compared to H2ClTPyP/Pluronic F127. It was determined from fluorescence quenching studies for GaClTPyP was located more in the inner core (hydrophobic) of Pluronic F127 and H2TPyP more on the outer region. Single oxygen quantum yields (Ф△) were determined to be 0.32 and 0.53 for GaClTPyP and GaClTPyP/Pluronic F127 respectively, an increase for the latter compared to the former.

- Description: The photophysical properties of the conjugate of uridine and zinc mono carboxy phenoxy phthalocyanine (ZnMCPPc–uridine, 4) are reported in this work. The conjugate was also adsorbed onto single walled carbon nanotubes (ZnMCPPc–uridine–SWCNT, 5). The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of 4 showed three N 1s peaks while that of 5 showed four N 1s peak, a new peak at 399.4 eV of 5 was assigned to pyrrolidonic nitrogen, due to the interaction of the pyrrolic nitrogen of 4 with the oxygen moiety of SWCNT–COOH in 5. The triplet lifetime, triplet and singlet oxygen quantum yields of the zinc mono carboxy phenoxy phthalocyanine increased by over 40% in the presence of uridine. SWCNTs resulted in only a small quenching of the triplet state parameters of 4.
