- Description: This study explores the spiritual relationship of water and uluntu lwase (people of) Port St. Johns, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Particularly the people that reside or regularly visit Isinuka sacred springs. This is done through an analysis and observations of the ritual practises performed at Isinuka sacred springs in Port St. Johns. This spring has provided sacred water used for healing, cleansing, and drinking for decades. Therefore, in this research we use the sacred water as an analysis point to understand the genesis of the ecological relationship of indigenous people and the environment. More so, this study uses the sacred water of the spring as an access point into indigenous knowledge systems (IKS) that have been passed on and maintained throughout history by the African elders. µRitual archives¶ have proved to carry indigenous knowledge systems on the history and philosophies of native regions and countries. Therefore, folktales, rituals, idioms and songs are didactic, and were intended to teach and sustain Isintu sakwa Xhosa (customs). This study uses observations ritual practises and face to face interviews to uncover the importance of nature and indigenous understanding of the environment from AmaXhosa residing in this area. The study was conducted in Port St. Johns in the rural parts of the Eastern Cape. Port St. Johns is a region of residing amaMpondo, which is an isiXhosa dialect. Therefore, amaMpondo and AmaXhosa are used in the study interchangeably. The researcher spent weeks visiting the spring daily and conducting qualitative semi-structured interviews. Observations and partaking in rituals were also used as a methodological approach to understand and capture the full experience of the sacred spring. The study uses the concept of as a medium to examine the relationship of water to spiritual ritual practises. The study literature shows a huge disjuncture between the literature written about the spring and the sociological meaning of the spring to the people that visit the spring. The results showed that the healing properties in the spring were caused by elements such as sulphur(s) and not the only the ritual practises that are performed at the spring. The study shows that, it is in the ritual practises that native Africans show their knowledge of the historical cosmological relationship between people and the environment. This is indicated in their use of sacred sites such as caves, rivers and ocean water to communicate with their ancestors. This study hopes to contribute towards a richer understanding of spirituality, ritual and archival work, for a holistic policymaking when dealing with water policies through an inclusive African indigenous perspective. , Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Humanities, School of Sociology and anthropology, 2022

- Description: The inception of this treatise is derived simply from the identification of the current inefficient public transportation facilities in Nelson Mandela Bay. This is especially experienced in the Korsten precinct as there is a scattering of transport nodes and none of them can be particularly identified as the key transport node in the fabric. With the 2010 World Cup behind us and many infrastructures such as the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium working as urban anchor of activity, the question still at hand is how the issue of integration between commuters and transportation can be addressed. This sets the scene for the application of an architectural resolution through the design of a transport interchange of the Korsten region. At present there are two functional informal taxi ranks that service the commuters of Korsten; the primary informal taxi node located on Attwell Street and the secondary informal taxi node on Cottrell Street. Currently they operate independently providing a service to people from different destinations, for instance Kleiner and Kempton Park. The first concern that arises is the proximity of the two taxi ranks in respect of the surrounding urban landscape. For these taxi nodes to be of service to the urban nomad they must be positioned in a more concentrated location to integrate efficiently with the urban fabric. Secondly, a thorough investigation into the informal trade is necessary to ascertain how it can enhance the street life and keep the edges activated and integrated. This treatise proposes the integration of the two independent taxi nodes with the proposed BRT system that has been implemented by the NMBM. This amalgamation would strengthen the urban landscape and create a place for the urban nomad. According to an article by Ian Ollis (2013) there is a dire need for accessible, affordable mass transport across South Africa .The bus rapid transit system was supposed to cure this woe, but implementation has been slow and mismanaged, especially in municipalities like Nelson Mandela Bay.

- Description: This study deals with the conceptual analysis of the challenges experienced by military peacekeepers in the United Nations (UN) operations. The research focused on the problems that military personnel encountered during the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) between 2005 and 2011. Many findings summarised from the respondents and through documents reviewed elucidated various challenges peacekeepers in UN missions experience. This study’s specific objectives were to assess the necessary preparations that made military peacekeepers operationally ready for the UNMIS Peace Support Operations (PSO); to determine whether there was any pre-deployment training conducted for military peacekeepers during the UNMIS; to investigate whether there were command and control issues in the mission; and finally, to examine whether military peacekeepers were acquainted with the fundamental UN principles and core values. The study used the purposive sampling technique to identify relevant subjects best suited to provide informed feedback through interviews and a questionnaire. Most of the respondents were from Botswana and Malawi, with additional valuable subjects from the different countries who participated in the UNMIS as staff officers, formed units, and observers. The level of operational readiness of individual military personnel was found inconsistent among participants from different countries due to the varying level of attention given to pre-deployment training and planning. Some individuals did not know about the UN core values, principles and critical resolution documents such as the Status of Mission Agreement (SOMA), Status of Force Agreement (SOFA), Rules of Engagement (ROE), and the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that were critical towards operationalising the UNMIS mandate to achieve the operational objectives. The concepts of command and control and reporting procedure continue to cause severe rifts between uniformed personnel and their civilian counterparts. - Description: The study investigated the factors influencing retention of academic staff at South African Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). The Job Embeddedness theory and Herzberg’s theory on retention were used to explore the retention of employees with special focus on the challenges and strategies of enhancing retention. The study adopted desktop research to explore the retention of academic staff in HEIs. This study discussed the challenges and factors influencing staff retention in universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training colleges (TVETs) in South Africa. The findings of the study revealed that the challenges that impede staff retention include a lack of capacity; massification of tertiary education; transformation of higher education; redressing historical imbalances; staff turnover; a lack of mentoring and coaching; and the impossibility to satisfy everyone’s needs. The study identified strategies that can be adopted to enhance staff retention that focus on remuneration and compensation; professional development; workplace climate; appointments and promotions; institutional governance; institutional infrastructure and adaptation to change. Factors that contribute to effective staff retention were also identified as organisational culture; the rewards system; mentoring and development programmes; retention tracking, recruitment; selection; the life cycle of an employee; onboarding; performance management systems, career management, bureaucratic organisational structures; and effective support from Deans and Vice-Chancellors. - Description: South Africa has one of the most disturbing joblessness rates in the world, especially among young people and black women. In 2018 the country’s narrow unemployment rate was at 26.7%, while by broader definition was anticipated to be at 35.1% (www.statssa.gov.za, 2018). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the role of the National Development Plan (NDP) in reducing unemployment in South Africa. The NDP was selected because it is the latest employment growth strategy the country has adopted. The National Development Plan targets economic growth, as the main factor for generating employment. To achieve the goal of this study, the researcher adopted the qualitative research methodology. Secondary data was gathered, analysed and interpreted to establish facts about the issue of high unemployment in South Africa and to determine if the National Development Plan is achieving its goal of reducing unemployment. This research established that the high unemployment rate in South Africa continues to be a major challenge, despite the introduction of the National Development Plan. The Plan projected that the rate of unemployment in South Africa will decline from 25% in 2013 to 14% by 2020. However, the unemployment rate in the country has increased from 25% in 2013 to 27% in 2018. In addition, this study established that unemployment in South Africa is structural, and it is caused by these four factors: Firstly, poor education, secondly, skills mismatch, the third factor which contributed immensely to unemployment in the country was the forceful removal of black people from places close to economic activities. This happened during the apartheid era. The fourth and last factor that led to increase in unemployment in South Africa was the 2008/2009 global recession. Structural unemployment is the type of unemployment that persists even when the economy is on the rise, as it is not caused by slow growth in the economy but by factors such as skill mismatch or complete unavailability of skills required in the economy. Therefore, targeting economic growth as a key mechanism for job creation will not yield any positive outcomes for South Africa. - Description: The study sought to inquire about the youth’s knowledge and understanding of diabetes in relation to its different types with regards to determined societal components such as education, culture, healthcare and socioeconomic status. It then became important to establish what the youth in Humewood, Port Elizabeth, understand about diabetes in relation to its three different types with regard to education, culture, healthcare and socioeconomic status in Humewood, Port Elizabeth. Previous studies have failed to inquire about knowledge construction and understanding of diabetes in Port Elizabeth, this provided an opportunity to do so, especially since diabetes is growing rapidly and is a lifelong illness. Most studies tend to focus on disseminating information to those that already have diabetes, overlooking the importance of diabetes education as a preventative strategy. The research followed a qualitative approach which included semi-structured individual face-to-face interviews as a method of data collection amongst ten participants using convenience sampling. The data revealed the importance of diabetes education and representation, and showed that financial standing and healthcare are interconnected. Complex inferiorities and social stratification hinder the betterment of the general welfare and therefore signifying social injustice. This research is an important contribution to medical anthropology in the context of Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

Programme management by South African city governments is investigated and evaluated, as related to inner-city decay and problem (derelict; hijacked; dilapidated; overcrowded) buildings. A case study approach, focusing on the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, is utilised to understand the phenomenon, and to answer the research question. The significant challenge of inner-city and central business district problem buildings in major South African cities has prompted the study; no scientific research has previously been conducted or published on this topic The study started out with this research question, asked in a case study context: to what extent are programmes dealing with inner-city problem buildings and decay managed effectively by city government in South Africa? In the literature review the researcher focused on programme management theory, emphasising the usefulness of project management principles and practice in public sector programme management contexts. In a subsequent chapter the applicable constitutional and legislative frameworks were presented. The researcher developed, as outcome, strategic remedial legal options available to city governments when dealing with transgressing owners of problematic buildings. Problem building by-laws were dealt with in detail. A qualitative research approach, including semi-structured in-depth interviews with political and managerial leaders at the case study city government, assisted the researcher in effective data generation. Data analysis was performed with vigour, based on thematic content analysis.relevant coding practices were utilised in analysis and interpretation of data.

- Description: This study evaluates the Integrative Propositional Analysis (IPA) (Wallis, 2015), and its usefulness as a complementary model for analysing and evaluating public policy and policy implementation. The IPA model is evaluated in this longitudinal study and seeks to establish the validity of the correlation between the historically implemented results of the Drakenstein Local Municipality Housing Policy against the complexity and systemicity scores of the policy between 2010 and 2017. The IPA model predicts that the higher the complexity and systemicity of the internal logic structure of a policy, the more useful and effective the policy will be, and for its successful implementation. The model is premised on the idea that policies are more useful when they have some level of structure and has been accepted widely for some time (Wallis, 2018). The study thus is an evaluation of the usefulness of the model as complementing policy analysis and evaluation for successful implementation based on the policy internal structure. The research study provided a brief historical background on the development of the IPA and locates it as a ‗science two‘ model based on its systems thinking and Complexity Theory properties to policy analysis. An extensive literature review was undertaken, and secondary data was gathered and analysed to gauge the policy‘s historical success. In examining the Drakenstein‘s housing policy outcomes for evaluating the IPA model, the study adopted both qualitative and quantitative approaches for this exploratory descriptive report. The diagnosis indicated that the revised targets, introduced during the implementation altered the vision of the policy. This allowed for an analysis of the low structure of the policy and its inability to create integrated sustainable human settlements.

- Description: The two health systems are currently functioning parallel to one another as it seeks to contribute towards improving the health care delivery systems in South Africa. The myriad of literature available on the topic has nudged this phenomenon into the spotlight, and this realisation became even more apparent since South Africa’s transition from a system of separate development (also known as apartheid) to a democratic dispensation in 1994. Traditional Medicine, also known as folk medicine or complementary and Alternative Medicine (also known as CAM), is regarded as the oldest form of health care system that has been around since the dawn of time. It is in ancient cultures that method of healing have used to cope and deal with various diseases that have threatened their existence and survival (Abdullahi, 2011). Botha (2004) puts it succinctly as she notes that the clash between traditional methods of healing and Western medical science in places like South Africa requires that we ask questions like “What is health?” “What does healing mean?” and outlines that the contemporary move towards the recognition of alternative medicine is concurrent with a shift in Western thinking on the nature of science, healing and human being. These concepts namely; “What is health?” and “What does healing mean?” will be expounded in the chapters that follow. The researcher concurs with Botha (2004) views in that access to basic health services, as well as related infrastructure, such as water supplies, sanitary works and roads, generally remains one of the biggest problems on the continent and this has a huge impact on health care delivery systems, particularly in South Africa.

- Description: This study aimed to assess the implementation of citizen centric strategies for social grant service delivery in the Chris Hani District and if SASSA is still living up to its promise. SASSA claims it will always pay the right social grant, to the right person, at the right time and place. This study aimed to understand and assess the different strategies of SASSA towards enhancing citizen experience in delivering social grants. The study’s objective was to assess citizen experience regarding the SASSA social grant payment systems, the social grant application processes, and SASSA communication and advocacy programmes. To conduct this study, a qualitative research methodology was employed. The population sample comprised of SASSA officials in the Chris Hani District. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with SASSA officials. The findings of this study reveal that SASSA did well to improve application turnaround time from 90 days to one day. Even so, payment methods must be improved. The recommendations suggest that SASSA should consider insourcing the function of paying social grants and consider opening the closed pay-points, as beneficiaries are struggling to travel to the remaining opened pay-points. The findings also proposed aligning the SocPen and MIS.

- Description: The research study in Vuwani Vhembe district sought to investigate demarcation disputes, the relationship between service delivery and demarcation disputes. The study further investigates the role of municipal demarcation board and local government adherence to sound governance principles and the causes of the demarcation dispute in Vuwani. The study additionally examines the conceptions and misconceptions, their impact on the current demarcation disputes in Vuwani. It further intended to establish the role and involvement of Vuwani stakeholders such as traditional structures/ leaders, civil unions, community members etc. in the processes of demarcating Vuwani. “What is the cause of Vuwani community member’s rejection of the re-demarcation, which is said to correct the past spatial injustices and promote municipal sizing, thus enabling better performance in service provision by municipalities?” The study employed a mixed-method involving the use of both quantitative (mini-survey) and qualitative (use of in-depth, semi structures interviews and focus group discussions). Research findings suggest that re-demarcation is a sensitive aspect/process in South Africa, mainly due to the past Apartheid era. There was forceful removal of people from their land supported by Apartheid legislation such as the Native Land Act 1913, Group Act 1950, Native Resettlement Act 1954 etc. Thus, fears of the past Apartheid system cloud any attempt to correct spatial injustices of the country. The new democratic South African government, therefore, needs to be cautious in its acts to correct the spatial injustices, thus adhering to sound governance principles. Findings reveal that several misconceptions and lack of adherence of good governance principles by the Municipal Demarcation Board and Local government have, to some extent, fueled the demarcation disputes in Vuwani. Municipal performance in the rendering of service delivery has a major impact and contributes to the community’s acceptance or rejection of demarcation/ amalgamations. The study further reveals that in Vuwani municipal performance with the establishment of the new Collins Chabane municipality has been clouded by fear of the unknown as this form of “demarcation of establishing a new municipality” altogether is relatively new. Rural land authority, the role of traditional leaders, ethnicity ties have all been found to have contributed to the disputes in Vuwani. Limpopo Province is home to three ethnic groups, namely, vaVhenda, baPedi and xiTsonga. The study findings have presented traits of tribalism as contributing to on-going demarcation disputes in Vuwani.

- Description: This study is based on the proposition that the respective philosophies of Nietzsche and Deleuze, including his collaborative work with Guattari, provide a way to rethink the underlying structures that inform ways of thinking about food and eating. In Nietzschean and Deleuzian terms, many of the dominant ways that humans currently think about food and eating are fraught with multiple anxieties that lead to passivity and despair, as well as obsessive concerns and feelings of guilt. This can be understood as various ways to say No to life and to difference‘. For the sake of overcoming (or at least addressing) such forms of eating-related nihilism, or life-denying attitudes, I argue that there is an urgent need for philosophical research that deals critically with the underlying food values‘ that lead to contemporary nihilistic ways of thinking about food. Further, I argue that critiquing contemporary dominant nihilistic food discourses and values from a Deleuzian and Nietzschean perspective, as well as exploring what produces nihilism, opens up Avenues/possibilities for shifts in approaching the problem of food and eating in a more life-affirming way. Specifically, Nietzsche‘s work on active and reactive forces, coupled with Deleuze and Guattari‘s account of concepts, allows for an exploration of what a starting point for overcoming nihilism might look like. In this case I argue that in order to think in a new way about the different aspects of eating, a more life-affirming and active concept of a body‘ should be produced.

- Description: Rock ‘n’ roll and, by extension, the electric guitar, is widely considered as a “gendered field of practice” (Leonard 2015: 184), governed by the hyper-masculine ideal (Hartman and Schmid 2014: 60). Both function as extensions of masculinity, representing an ideological binary of male superiority and female inferiority. This manifests concretely in the perceived disparity regarding gender representation amongst rock musicians, particularly guitarists, and often leads to somewhat one-dimensional views about the misogyny associated with the genre (Gracyk 2001: 182-183). However, by applying a post-structural reading and deconstructing the binary according to a theoretical framework inspired by the works of Julia Kristeva -- presented in a Hegelian dialectical model, with additional insight drawn from the works of Jacques Lacan and Sigmund Freud- it becomes apparent that the male claim to, and overrepresentation within,the genre is a multifaceted issue, born of a combination of natural and social constructionist factors.

- Description: Universities, like other organisations, are challenged to manage corporate identity and reputation to maintain a competitive edge. Few studies in Africa focus on the impact of internal communication on corporate identity and reputation management during organisational transformation. Thus, this study interrogated how a transforming and complex university in Kenya managed the corporate identity, image and reputation for competitive advantage. The purpose of the study was to establish how Multimedia University of Kenya (MMU) management communicated with its employees to nurture the corporate identity, image and reputation during a ten-year period of transformation. The study draws insights from in-depth interviews with 23 university management members, 178 self-administered questionnaires through random stratification of MMU employees, and content review of two MMU strategic plans ranging from 2011 to 2021. The findings suggest that MMU management used formal and interactive channels to create awareness of organisational transformation. These channels included face-to-face engagements, formal meetings and mediated communication through telephone conversations and intranet that facilitated record keeping. The management engaged in top-down and bottom-up communication to build employee trust, while employees expressed reservations of bottom-up information accuracy, suggesting information exclusion. On the contrary, the employees preferred digital and interpersonal channels for internal communication, which included telephone conversations, social media, personal visits by MMU management, and university events. Publicity activities were to disseminate information to prospective students and sponsors through selected private television, vernacular radio, and MMU radio stations, traditional print media, and the MMU website to communicate the MMU brand and image. Employees acknowledged that MMU brands itself as a leader in telecommunication, technology, mechanical, manufacturing, and media training through state-of-the-art equipment, robust faculty, and problem-solving ventures through research. The current study proposes stronger employee involvement, executive packaging and positioning, coaching successful faculty members as brand ambassadors, retraining employees, and employee participation in policy formulation to enhance new culture. In addition, these opositions will enhance the corporate identity, brand, as well as university performance, product quality, policy and processes to enrich the corporate reputation during transformation. The findings challenge university management to actively engage the corporate communication function, emphasise employee participation, and focus on the continual improvement of corporate identity and reputation management practices for competitive advantage. The current study proposes a participative, multi-layered and multi-dimensional communication model for efficient and excellent internal communication. The current study recommends that corporate communication practitioner be strategically positioned to coordinate employee engagement, utilise appropriate communication channels and counsel university management on corporate identity, image and reputation management during organisational transformation.

- Description: Transportation is a fundamental element of human existence. As urban areas continue to grow at a rapid speed public transport increasingly takes on the role of providing citizens with access to participate in activities of the city. Research has shown that individual perception of public transport is influenced by passenger response to collective mobility when on board modes of transport. This study aimed to investigate the minibus taxi commuters’ constructions and relevance of their taxi commuting experiences in the Port Elizabeth Northern Areas. Building on existing work it asks: How do commuters in the Northern Areas of Port Elizabeth describe and narrate their taxi commuting experiences? This thesis is interested in the experience of public transport as told by those who make use of the industry. The study focuses on both commuters and drivers and the way they characterize the social experience of commuting in taxis. These individuals provide first-hand experience and insight of the industry. The purpose of this study is to foreground the voices of those who have first-hand experience of dependency on the public transport industry.It is these voices that must be heard and considered in policy formation. The study found simultaneous vulnerabilities exist between taxi drivers and taxi commuters resulting in both groups being held captive by the taxi industry.

- Description: The study sought to examine the skills needed by public officials for effective and efficient public procurement management. Supply Chain Management (SCM) is one of the key mechanisms enabling the government to implement policies and strategies, and to realise set objectives. However, there is a series of reported cases of incompetence by South African public sector practitioners when it comes to implementing duties they are designated to do, which have raised many concerns and led to the failure of SCM policies in the public sector. The Eastern Cape provincial government has been seen to be affected by poor procurement, and public procurement officials in the province face challenges such as redundant spending and misinterpretation of contracts and needs. These problems in the Eastern Cape provincial government have been especially highlighted in the Auditor General of South Africa’s reports. The study adopted a qualitative approach, and desktop research was used in a bid to ascertain the competence and skills required by public sector SCM practitioners in the Eastern Cape. Results showed that the logistics and supply chain sector have skills shortages, both in terms of soft and hard skills.Numerous studies have been done around the world to determine the types of skills that are required for successful supply chains. These results showed that there are skill categories that can be valuable in properly determining management effectively and efficiently in any institution. The study, therefore, recommended that the government provide funds for public sector employees to take professional education in the area of SCM. The government can also send its employees to education institutions that offer supply chain course.

- Description: The success of service delivery heavily relies on how satisfied employees are with their jobs, and how they are treated within the South African public sector. A number of deliberations can be described and linked to the importance of job satisfaction. Firstly, job satisfaction contributes to the mental health and general life satisfaction of employees. This may happen through acquiring self-esteem, which is a person's overall sense of self-worth and/or personal values. Organisations depend on the health, skills, knowledge, and ability of their human resources in order to stay abreast with technological developments and remain competent on the global stage as they pursue organisational goals and objectives. This dependence has given rise to the need to assess the importance of employee job satisfaction in the South African public sector. To that end, this study employed a desktop research method by reviewing journal articles, government gazettes, conference papers, and relevant books to gather data and conduct content analysis in order to establish facts about employee job satisfaction in the public sector. The study found that emotional, cognitive, and behavioural components make up job satisfaction. The feelings that an employee has regarding his or her job form the emotional component of job satisfaction n. In addition, boredom, anxiety, and excitement are the most common feelings experienced by employees when they perform their jobs. Actions such as coming late to work and pretending to be ill form the behavioural components and types of actions that employees display in relation to their levels of job satisfaction.
