- Description: The Agile software development methodology has progressed over time and has become the most popularly used methodology for many projects owing to its adaptable and advanced nature. Agile is an iterative and incremental method that supports project teams to maintain the growing demands of present-day organisations. In software development, it is imperative to build software that ensures a holistic user experience and meets requirements. Software Developers and User Experience Designers focus on users’ preferences and requirements while navigating an application through an approach called user-centred design (UCD). The purpose of Agile user-experience (UX) methods is to build user-centric software solutions using the Agile methodology. Literature indicates a scarcity of Agile-UX models to integrate user experience design processes effectively within Agile software development. Hence, the motivation for this study was to create a practical model for integrating user experience design processes into Agile software development for implementation by software development teams. Initially, the study defines the problem that formed the basis for the initiation of this research, followed by the research questions and objectives that are the fundamental portion of the development of this study. This study highlights the benefits and challenges of Agile-UX methods through a case study of Agile software development teams in South Africa. Furthermore, additional best practices are recommended. A survey questionnaire was distributed to software development teams to identify the various factors that lead to implementing Agile-UX methods. The distribution of the survey questionnaire supported the theoretical perspective of this study. Furthermore, Agile development (AD) and UCD are not easy to combine as UCD aims to understand users before software product development, and no activities are performed before development starts in AD. Its provisions include but are not limited to the usage of personal information for marketing purposes. While it was announced that enforcement of the law would commence in July 2021, many organisations are still in the process of reorganising themselves to comply with this important piece of legislation. Although the Information Regulator’s guideline document is available for utilization, organisations are struggling to develop POPIA compliance frameworks tailored to their operational requirements. As stated in section 6.2.1 of the Information Regulator’s guideline document, the act calls for the appointment of the an Information Officer by organisations who is required to develop, implement, monitor and maintain a POPIA compliance, framework. With that stated, this study aims to reports about developing a POPIA compliance framework for the City of Tshwane’s Fresh Produce Market. The study’s primary objective was to develop a POPIA compliance framework for the City of Tshwane’s Fresh Produce Market (TFPM) as a collector and processor of personal information. The study had three sub-objectives which were achieved using three research methods, namely literature review, content analysis and semi-structured interviews. Through a literature review, conditions that should be adhered to in relation to collecting and processing personal information were identified. Shifting the focus to the second sub-objective, a vigorous content analysis was performed to investigate the TFPM’s current method of collecting and processing personal information. The process involved evaluating the TFPM’s SOPs, Service Level Agreement, License Agreement, and the city of Tshwane’s Information Communication Technology Framework using the Nexia POPIA checklist. The evaluation results revealed a huge non-compliance gap with regard iii to POPIA and personal information conditions. An appraisal of RDP housing quality in sustaining the needs of the inhabitants: a case of Mount Ayliff, Chithwa Village in Umzimvubu Local Municipality

- Description: When the South African democratic government gained power in 1994, its focus was on improving the lives of all the citizens, especially the ones who were the victims of apartheid laws. Providing adequate housing and proper access to government goods and services to poor citizens were perceived as an excellent initiative to better the quality of life of the previously disadvantaged people. This initiative gave birth to essential programmes such as the Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP). The South African government embarked on an RDP housing programme to address the imbalances of apartheid spatial planning and unequal access to government goods and services. However, many studies have criticised this housing programme, stating that the government prioritised quantity over quality when constructing the subsidy houses. The purpose of the study was to appraise the quality of the RDP housing programme in sustaining the needs of the inhabitants in Mount Ayliff, Chithwa village, in Umzimvubu Local Municipality. The study employed a qualitative research method and used an interview guide to collect data from ten study participants. The findings show that the RDP housing programme has assisted many individuals in the community of Chithwa village in Mount Ayliff to get out of shacks and own proper houses. However, due to the cheap materials used and poor workmanship, the RDP houses in Mount Ayliff, Chithwa village are defective. Corruption and inconsistencies in the municipality's allocation of RDP houses have left people furious and disappointed in the RDP housing programme, as they believe their municipality is cheating them out of RDP houses. The RDP beneficiaries of Chithwa village in Mount Ayliff do not have title deeds even though they have occupied their houses for more than two decades. Lastly, the RDP beneficiaries had huge expectations about their RDP houses. However, they were disappointed when the houses they received did not meet their expectations. However, there are also risks and vulnerabilities associated with this, thus cyber threats. Cybersecurity has been put in place to safeguard the internet from these cyber threats, yet there is an ever-growing concern regarding the implementation of cybersecurity, both globally and in South Africa. With the increase in cyber threats, there is a growing need and demand for IT professionals with the requisite cybersecurity skills and knowledge to combat and mitigate these threats. However, an ever-increasing cybersecurity skills gap has been identified both globally and in South Africa. Yet the specific cybersecurity skills demand, needs and challenges of IT professionals in South Africa are currently unknown. This study therefore investigated the cybersecurity skills demand, needs, and challenges of IT professionals in South Africa by reporting on IT professionals’ perceptions in this regard. An online questionnaire was used to gather information for this and was distributed to IT professionals using various online platforms. According to the findings of the study, there are several challenges such as lack of time, lack of funding and a lack of resources that South Africa must overcome in order to address the cybersecurity skills gap. From the survey results it was also found that neither tertiary institutions, nor organisations, nor the South African government are investing enough in cybersecurity skills development. Without the right cybersecurity skills set or investment in the development of cybersecurity skills, cyber threats will continue to increase and will potentially become more harmful to South African organisations and to the South African society at large. Furthermore, this study addresses the extent to which cybersecurity-related skills are required and currently used by IT professionals in South Africa to address the cybersecurity skills gap. The study adopted a quantitative research approach; the sampling technique that was used for the current study is the convenience sampling technique. This technique is also referred to as availability or accidental sampling. The population for the study consisted of respondents from the construction-consulting firms and contractors such as the Aurecon Group, Haw and Inglis Civil Engineering, the Metro Bay Municipality, and the National Home Builders Registration Council. The number of questionnaire that was distributed is about thirty-three (33) and about 36.4% response rate received. The findings of the study revealed the impact of the late payment on the progress of building infrastructure projects. The study indicated that, delayed payment to the contractor can affect the can affect the productivity adversely. It is also established that delayed payment includes unrealistic cash flows, error in clams, financial challenges and disagreements relating to the valuation of work. This implies that, payments that are processed on time to the contractors can be of critical importance on the success of the project, whilst on the other hand non-payment or delayed payment have a negative impact on the implementation of construction projects. The study investigated the most prominent leadership skills among the City of Cape Town project managers, the most prominent project success factors, and the relationship between the prominent leadership skills and project success factors. Lastly, it determined the strategy to be used to enhance the leadership skills of the City of Cape Town construction project managers. The research was established upon the problem statement from which the sub-questions and hypotheses were derived. The research followed the explanatory sequential mixed method whereby primary data was first collected through a quantitative method and followed by a qualitative method. A pragmatism paradigm philosophy was used for its flexibility to combine both quantitative and qualitative research. The deductive and inductive approaches were used because they suited both qualitative and quantitative data. The research survey determined that communication is the most prominent leadership skill among the City of Cape Town project managers. Concerning the project success factor, quality was identified to be the most prominent project success factor among the City of Cape Town construction projects. The Pearson correlation analysis was subsequently undertaken to determine whether there is a relationship between leadership skills and project success factors. The results illustrated a strong and positive relationship between leadership skills and project success, indicating leadership skills lead to project success. The qualitative research portion of the study investigated what strategy can be implemented to enhance the leadership skills of City of Cape Town project managers. The findings confirmed that training and support-structure strategies are appropriate to improve a construction project manager’s leadership skills and that training does not guarantee good leadership performance; however, applying the training, monitoring, and mentoring leads to good leadership performance. The study also revealed that a support structure involves utilising consultants who are leadership experts. Recruiting professional officers for all departments within the City who would work in conjunction with project managers and senior managers is another form of a support structure to be used. Lastly, setting up one-on-one support sessions with project managers can also be useful. This research focuses on the securing of home networking devices, which with faster, always-on networking technologies, are increasingly vulnerable to attack. To develop interventions that aim to assist home users with securing their home networking devices, it is imperative to understand why they protect or do not protect their home networking devices. Therefore, this research study models the factors that motivate home users to protect their home networking devices. The study limits data collection to South African fibre users, a fast-growing segment of the South African population. Following a comprehensive literature review, the study adopted the Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) as the primary framework for the conceptual research model. Factors from the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) and the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) were included to enrich the theoretical model. A measurement instrument consisting of 53 questionnaire items measuring thirteen (13) constructs was developed. After that, a structural model that hypothesized fifteen (15) relationships between constructs was created. The conceptual research model was evaluated through structural equation modeling (SEM) using empirical data gathered from a sample of 392 South African home fibre users. Interestingly, trust in the service provider did not significantly impact perceived vulnerability or severity. This implies that initiatives from the service provider will not necessarily have the desired impact on home user behavior. Additionally, trust in technology did not impact perceived severity and only partially impacted perceived vulnerability. This suggests that home users did not think that the security features of their home networking devices helped much. Of course, these results are in the context of this study and may not necessarily be generalizable to other populations or contexts. Further work to understand the role of service and technology providers may be helpful. The negative relationship between technology anxiety and both perceived task anxiety and self-efficacy supports the call for more or better security awareness interventions. The positive relationship between social influence and perceived vulnerability and severity suggests that these awareness interventions may be best delivered through community involvement. The value proposition of the wholescale BIM adoption in South Africa is irrefutable, given the widespread adoption by other nations. The Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) has maintained that the initial adoption of BIM in South Africa must be market and client driven. This study explores the issues surrounding the implementation of Building Information Modelling (BIM) through the research lens of built environment professionals based in Durban by ascertaining the state of BIM implementation amongst role players in the local construction industry. An understanding of the relative level of knowledge of BIM and its potential uses will be analysed. It explores the barriers to BIM and how it affects its uptake in organisations and pervasive use in the local construction sector. The methodology for this paper is based on a literature review of the key global trends relative to BIM implementation and thereafter a quantitative research methodology was then employed. A key finding was that the lack of knowledge about what BIM is and its potential uses, which is pervasive among the built environment professions affects the extent of its adoption. Other important outcomes were found to be the prevalence of the notion that scarcity of appropriately trained or experienced professionals in BIM in organisations retards its adoption and implementation, and the overarching perception that the implementation of BIM is constrained by resistance to change by staff and leadership at an organisational level. Hence, the problem defined for this study is that, without a common lexicon of the cybersecurity knowledge, skills, abilities, and tasks (KSATs) required of IT professionals as they relate to specific IT job roles in South Africa, the cybersecurity skills gap cannot be sufficiently addressed. Such a lexicon could help drive the development of skills in South Africa and, in so doing assist in alleviating the cybersecurity skills gap. This study therefore presents a common lexicon by collecting job postings over a four-month period from 1 October 2020 to 31 January 2021. These job postings were analysed using a thematic content analysis. The results identified 20 common IT job roles, together with the specific KSATs relating to each job role identified. As a result, these job roles form part of a proposed cybersecurity skills framework for South Africa (CSFwSA) which could help and guide South Africa towards more targeted cybersecurity skills development. A major number of the 770 million people who lack access to electricity reside in regions with abundant sun irradiation. Electrification is a practical key to unlocking socio-economic development in impoverished regions. PV systems with batteries have a disadvantage of requiring high capital costs, with batteries being the most expensive component in such a system. Accumulation of maintenance and replacement costs of batteries are high throughout the lifespan of a PV system with batteries due to limited lifespan of batteries, typical 1-3 years. A batteryless PV system for daytime commercial purposes is proposed in the dissertation. An experimental set up of the proposed batteryless PV system was constructed and tested in a laboratory. A load controller for the batteryless PV system was implemented, loads were given priority levels and schedule times to be operated during the day. A DC dump load regulates DC bus voltage and also acts as a water heater. Furthermore, a simulation model was developed on MATLAB Simulink. The simulation model consisted of two case study scenarios, 3 solar panel system and 7 solar panel system of an internet café business. Better system performance was noticed when loads were given priority levels with no schedule times. The office of the 20th century disregarded well-being and was focused on efficiently accommodating the functions of the workplace in an effort to increase productivity. Today, many of these buildings inadequately provide for the basic biological, psychological, and social needs required for the work force of the 21 st century. The nature of the office has shifted to a more socially interactive and flexible environment which attempts to obtain productivity targets through nurturing the well-being of occupants. Research has determined that biological health can be supported through the optimization of building performance; psychological health can be supported through considering environmental psychology; and social health can be supported through instilling a robust corporate culture. This treatise takes a qualitative research approach to thoroughly interpret the informants and constraints of the site in order to design additions and alterations to the existing administrative headquarters for the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. Through this disconnect, nature is bearing the consequences and is in a state of decay. As part of the cosmos, the natural envi-ronment is inherently imbued with sacredness; this sacred nature often manifesting itself within the very structure of the earth. Importance is then placed on how we po-sition ourselves and our holy places within their natural environment in order to set a precedent for the rest of our built environments. This treatise positions itself within ecology and the sacred. It focuses on the particulars of sacredscapes and pilgrimages within a context of Afri-can landscapes and African religions. This encompasses both the built and unbuilt elements of sacred architecture as well as sacredscapes through the reflection of cosmic rhythms, manifest order and harmony in order to create a holistic living organism aware of both the “real” and the sacred. Through its roots in holistic design, is sacredscapes align very closely to that of the ecological paradigm and the creation of integrated ecosystems. Sacred place often realised through the continuation of ritual practice. These rituals are a crucial part of African religions and most often find themselves in or associated with their natural environment. Thus, this is where the focus of the treatise lies - in the ritual cleansing ceremonies of the Zion Christian Church carried out in the Swartkops River. - Description: Lerotholi Polytechnic is an institution of higher learning located in the heart of Maseru, Lesotho, and it was established in 1905, by the then paramount chief of Lesotho, Chief Lerotholi. Through time, the Polytechnic has seen growth in infrastructure as new needs arose. According to (Dewar and Louw, 2017), universities fall within institutions with great importance to society therefore, physical environments for these institutions should be functional and inspiring to the end user. Though this haphazard growth was perceived as good by the institution, there is little evidence of rational thought in the design throughout the campus and this expansion resulted in extremely isolated buildings on site, creating vast amounts of unused spaces, lack of attention to pedestrian movement and the lack of attention to existing green areas. The study employed in this document uses both primary and secondary data gathered from desktop research. This was gathered with site visits and observations made at Lerotholi Polytechnic, Maseru, Lesotho. This thesis document is aimed at investigating and understanding the notions of identity and place in university. campus architecture.The findings reveal that the building to be designed needs to act as an edge towards the undefined side of the campus that sits on the busy road passing adjacent to campus. This should also work as an activator to the abandoned buildings that are still structurally sound near the chosen site. Furthermore, this building should act as a gateway while promoting more of the pedestrian activity.It can be concluded that “Identity” and “Place “ in campus architecture are of utmost importance and are the two elements which will be improved with the new design. - Description: The post-apartheid city is an unfinished product. It is simultaneously being made and unmade. South African urban environments reinforce and reflect urban segregation and inequality. They are characterised by the remanence of the apartheid city defined by sprawl, placelessness and monotony. Nowhere else has this reality been truer and more visible than in township settlements. Townships settlements are the polar opposite of suburbia. They are typically situated on the outskirts of urban environments with unpleasant living conditions characterised by the lack of public facilities and spaces, adequate resources and under-utilised left-over space. The poor urban conditions in township settlements is where this treatise has decided to position itself. The treatise will use both primary and secondary data resources collected from site visits, observations made, analytical maps and diagrams. The secondary data, includes books, precedent studies, articles and academic journals.
