- Description: For eons, traditional medicine was the dominant medical system for millions of people in Africa. It plays an important role in health care for the majority of rural folk in Africa, who often do not have access to modern medicine. The high cost of modern health care systems has prompted the integration of traditional African medicine into the continent’s national health care systems. In Swaziland, a small kingdom located in Southern Africa, 85% of the people rely on traditional medicine for their primary health care. For Swazis, traditional medicine is anchored in their cultural and religious beliefs. In traditional African medicine, it is believed that illness is caused through spiritual or social imbalance and diagnosis is reached through spiritual means.

In preparing the ethics protocol for an ethnographic study of an anti-rape protest, we gave careful consideration to the potential ethical challenges in accordance with the University ethics code. However, this process did not prepare the first author for the dynamic and reciprocal positioning she encountered in relationships in the field or the ‘ethically important’ moment-by-moment decision-making which this required of her. Drawing on the philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas, a feminist reading of the contemporary ‘turn to affect’, and examples from our research, we show how ethical decision-making in ethnographic research is always relational and dialogical, both in our direct interactions with participants and in the ways in which we approach our ‘data’.

In addition, we encountered discrepancies between our research aims and assumptions made by the University Ethical Standards Committee, managers, healthcare providers, teenaged participants, and other service users. These complexities have implications for ethical engagement of researchers and call for nuanced means of data collection and analysis. We discuss how critical researchers can mitigate social injustice by questioning entrenched ways of thinking about participants and negotiating the contradictory positionings of self and others.

- Description: The extracellular matrix (ECM) serves as a scaffold for cells within tissues and is composed of an intricate network of glycoproteins, growth factors and matricellular proteins which cooperatively function in cell processes such as migration, adhesion and wound healing. ECM morphology is constantly undergoing remodelling (synthesis, assembly and degradation) during normal cell processes and when deregulated may contribute to disease. Heat shock proteins (Hsps) are involved in regulating processes that determine the assembly and degradation of the ECM at multiple levels, in both normal and diseased states. These roles include mediating the activation of ECM-degrading enzymes, maintaining matrix stability and clearing aggregated/misfolded proteins. Hsp may serve as chaperones and receptors or have cytokine-like functions. In this chapter, we review how Hsp90, Hsp70, Hsp40 and a number of ER resident chaperones contribute to ECM regulation. The role of the non-Hsp chaperones, SPARC and clusterin in the ECM is also discussed.

Heat shock proteins (Hsps) are involved in regulating processes that determine the assembly and degradation of the ECM at multiple levels, in both normal and diseased states. These roles include mediating the activation of ECM-degrading enzymes, maintaining matrix stability and clearing aggregated/misfolded proteins. Hsp may serve as chaperones and receptors or have cytokine-like functions. In this chapter, we review how Hsp90, Hsp70, Hsp40 and a number of ER resident chaperones contribute to ECM regulation. The role of the non-Hsp chaperones, SPARC and clusterin in the ECM is also discussed.

- Description: Around 1000 different species of indigenous and naturalized vegetables contribute to the dietary diversity, food security, and livelihoods of populations across sub-Saharan Africa. These foods are also a part of alimentary traditions and cultural identity, but have suffered as neglected and underutilized species. Slowly, African vegetables are beginning to gain the attention of universities, research centers, and development organizations; however, the terminology used to describe the plants is characterized by widespread disagreement and redundancy. Key terms and concepts used such as indigenous, traditional, and leafy have different interpretations and are used interchangeably, creating a challenge for coordinated research and extension efforts. Through analyzing a broad set of peer-reviewed journal articles on African vegetables, we (1) provide an overview with respect to definitions and terms used in the literature, (2) propose a definition of the term traditional African vegetable (TAV), (3) create a typology to classify the main groups of African vegetables, and (4) identify trends and gaps for further research and extension on African vegetables. We propose not only a unified way to categorize these vegetables but also a way for a more holistic and interdisciplinary systems approach to further the research agenda and practical management of African vegetables.
