- Description: Using a methanol assisted thermal decomposition approach, sphere shaped NaYGdF4:Yb/Er upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) were successfully synthesized. The chemical, spectroscopic and fluorescence properties of the UCNPs were fully characterized. Characteristic upconversion fluorescence emissions were produced by the NPs in the green, red and NIR regions and the NPs were also shown to possess paramagnetic properties. The influence of the UCNPs on the spectroscopic and fluorescence properties of an aluminium octacarboxy phthalocyanine AlOCPc was investigated. Covalent conjugation to an AlOCPc resulted in a large blue shift of the phthalocyanine’s Q band, which was accompanied by a decrease in the Pc’s fluorescence lifetime in DMSO. By combining the phthalocyanine and upconversion nanoparticle, we present a system capable of multimodal imaging, using both the upconversion nanoparticle’s and phthalocyanine’s emission, and magnetic resonance imaging (as a result of doping the upconversion nanoparticles with Gd3+ ions).

A South African PlxyGV was recently recovered from an overcrowded laboratory P. xylostella colony and identified as a genetically distinct isolate by sequencing of the granulin gene and restriction endonuclease (REN) analysis of genomic DNA. In this report, PlxyGV-SA was further characterised by PCR amplification and sequencing of egt, lef-8 and lef-9 genes, and several amino acid substitutions were observed. The PstI REN profile of PlxyGV-SA was different from that of PlxyGV-Japan in terms of band size and number, thereby confirming its novel genetic identity. Surface dose bioassays showed that PlxyGV-SA is pathogenic to neonate but not late instar larvae at the same and higher virus doses, indicating that a biopesticide should be targeted at early larval stages in the field.

- Description: Understanding the rates and causes of land-use change is crucial in identifying solutions, especially in sensitive landscapes and ecosystems, as well as in places undergoing rapid political, socioeconomic or ecological change. Despite considerable concern at the rate of transformation and degradation of the biodiversity-rich Albany Thicket biome in South Africa, most knowledge is gleaned from private commercial lands and state conservation areas. In comparison, there is limited work in communal areas where land uses include biomass extraction, especially for firewood and construction timber. We used aerial photographs to analyze land use and cover change in the high- and low-use zones of an urban commonage and an adjacent protected area over almost six decades, which included a major political transition. Field sampling was undertaken to characterize the current state of the vegetation and soils of the commonage and protected area and to determine the supply and demand for firewood and construction timber. Between the 1950s and 1980s, there was a clear increase in woody vegetation cover, which was reversed after the political transition in the mid-1990s. However, current woody plant standing stocks and sustainable annual production rates are well above current firewood demand, suggesting other probable causes for the decline in woody plant cover. The fragmentation of woody plant cover is paralleled by increases in grassy areas and bare ground, an increase in soil compaction, and decreases in soil moisture, carbon, and nutrients.

- Description: We measured stable isotope signatures and fatty acid profiles in dominant consumers and basal food sources to assess spatial and temporal changes in the trophic structure within an estuarine ecosystem. The consumers analyzed included zooplankton, benthic invertebrates and fishes from the upper, middle and lower reaches of the estuary collected over four seasons. The contributions of different food sources to the consumers were assessed using the isotopic mixing model stable isotope analysis in R (SIAR). Our stable isotope and fatty acid data indicated that the food webs differed significantly among reaches and seasons within the estuary. Benthic invertebrates exhibited lower carbon isotopic (δ13C) values in the upper reaches of the estuary during all seasons, with lowest values occurring during autumn. In contrast, nitrogen isotopic (δ15N) values of consumers were higher in the upper reaches of the estuary and were highest during summer and spring. SIAR models and fatty acid compositional data both indicated greater utilization of marsh grass by consumers inhabiting the lower reaches of the estuary, particularly during autumn and winter. Our data indicated that differential inputs of detritus contributed to spatial changes in the benthic estuarine food web structure and that the trends changed throughout the year.

In addition, their influence on the spectroscopic properties of an unsubstituted tetrathiophenoxy phthalocyanine (H2Pc) was investigated. The UCNP were found to produce characteristic upconversion luminescence emissions in the blue, green, red and NIR regions. Simple mixing with an H2Pc in toluene was found to exert no obvious changes in the spectroscopic properties of the Pc, although a considerable increase in the radiative lifetimes is observed for the Pc in the presence of the UCNPs. The singlet oxygen generation mediated by the red light excitation of the H2Pc mixed with UCNP was found to decrease in the presence of the NPs.

The powdered mixture was activated by compression into a tablet by applying a force of 300 kN, followed by re-grinding into powder and heating it to high temperatures (1000°C). The activation by compression resulted in more than 50% debundling of SWCNTs as judged by transition electron microscopy. Acid functionalization of the SWCNTs was confirmed by the increase in the D:G ratio from 0.56 to 0.87 in the Raman spectra and the observation of an average of one carboxylic acid group per 13 carbon atoms from thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). TGA also showed that the initial decomposition temperatures for the activated and non-activated mixtures to be 205°C and 245°C, respectively. Hence, activation leads to the lowering of the pyrolysis temperature of the phthalocyanines. X-ray diffraction, electronic absorption and Fourier transform infrared spectra were also employed to characterize the SWCNT.

We note some of the theoretical and methodological developments and social changes witnessed over the last three decades. We highlight challenges facing feminist researchers in academia as well as international feminist publishing. Samples of sediments and sources of organic matter [i.e., particulate organic matter, microphytobenthos (MPB), macrophytes, salt marsh plants, and terrestrial leaves] were collected during spring and summer 2012, and autumn and winter 2013 from the upper, middle, and lower reaches. A Stable Isotope Analysis in R (SIAR) mixing model was used to identify the organic matter sources contributing to sediments in each estuarine reach and season. We found that diatom-associated fatty acids (20:5ω3; 16:1ω7) increased toward the upper reaches, while long-chained terrigenous fatty acids (24:0) tended to be more prevalent in lower reach sediments. In support of the FA results, the SI mixing model showed a substantial contribution from the marsh grass Spartina maritima in sediments of the lower estuary during periods of low-freshwater discharge (autumn and winter), while MPB was the main component in sediments from the upper and middle reaches during all seasons. Our results have implications for evaluating estuarine food webs since the spatial and seasonal variability in the organic matter deposited can influence estuarine community structure.

Despite the acknowledged importance of family, the association between family functioning and individual well-being outcomes have remained unexplored in the current body of knowledge. This paper explores the association between family functioning and reported levels of life satisfaction and happiness in South Africa. The paper employs the Family Attachment and Changeability Index (FACI8) to measure family functioning, using data from the 2011 South African Social Attitudes Survey. Four measures of family functioning are utilised, namely the aggregate FACI8 scale, the attachment and changeability sub-scales, and family functioning type. Improvements in the level of family functioning as well as in the levels of attachment and changeability are positively associated with life satisfaction and happiness. In addition, individuals living in midrange or balanced family functioning types are more satisfied with life and happier compared to persons living in extremely or moderately dysfunctional families. The findings highlight the importance of supportive intra-family dynamics in fostering greater individual well-being. This in turn places emphasis on the investigation of likely correlates of family functioning and impact evaluations of family-focused social work interventions’ impact on family functioning as areas for future research.

- Description: Trees in urban areas are important sources of ecosystem services and benefits. In most towns the bulk of urban biodiversity, and trees specifically, are found in homestead gardens. But there is only limited understanding of the tree holdings in such gardens, and how they vary within and between towns, especially for developing countries where rapid urbanisation and high poverty influence the use of and reliance on land and local resources. We report on the nature of tree holdings in private gardens of poorer suburbs in three medium-sized towns along a gradient of decreasing mean annual rainfall in northern South Africa. A total of 3 217 trees were enumerated across 450 randomly selected homesteads. Most (90 %) households had at least one tree on their homestead, with an average of 7.7 ± 6.1 trees. Most householders had planted the trees themselves. The density of trees declined along the moisture gradient. Within towns, tree density was positively related to garden size, which in turn was related to relative affluence and age of the suburb. Newer and poorer suburbs had the fewest trees per household. Sixty-two tree species were recorded, which were dominated by alien species, especially fruit trees. There was no relationship between the moisture gradient and tree species richness per household, but within towns there was a difference between suburbs, being lowest in the newest suburbs. Numbers of trees and species per household was positively related to age of the household head.

Since then the species has spread across the length and breadth of the country. Attempts to control Lantana in India have not been successful. In this study, we analysed the use of Lantana by local communities in southern India and identified the possible causes and consequences of its use through the use of a household survey of the socio-economic profile of the user and nonuser households and an analysis of the ecological history of the communities. Communities have been using Lantana for over 25–30 years and apparently such use was not prompted by external agencies. The characteristics of user and nonuser households were similar, except that Lantana users were more literate and had a greater number of occupations per household than nonusers. Per capita income was similar between user and nonuser groups. For nonuser groups, their main income sources were from trading (44 %), wage labour (32 %) and forest resources (23 %). In contrast, the Lantana user groups substituted their loss of income from forest resources (7 %) by income from Lantana (46 %). The ecological history revealed that Lantana was adopted as a resource at a time when it was increasing in the landscape and traditional bamboo resources were in decline because of overuse by commercial enterprises and mast flowering. This change in ecological resource availability prompted a major shift in livelihoods for some in the area.

Addition of cremophore EL in aqueous solution resulted in partial disaggregation and increased photoactivity. - Description: Fatty acid profiles were determined in rocky intertidal suspension-feeders (mussels and polychaetes) and grazers (limpets and sea urchins) on a monthly basis over 1 year to assess potential dietary overlap between consumers occupying the same trophic guild, and any temporal shifts in diets. Both reproductive and non-reproductive tissues were assessed in an attempt to separate influences of food quality with those of life cycle. Relative variability in fatty acids over time could not be predicted from the feeding guild occupied by a consumer, and influential factors of the temporal shifts included both dietary and reproductive dynamics (even in muscle tissues). Species in the same trophic guild occupied separate trophic niches throughout the year, hence minimising competitive interactions regarding food acquisition. Based on overall variation in fatty acid profiles of muscle tissues, the suspension-feeders Perna perna and Gunnarea gaimardi and the grazing limpet Cymbula oculus occupied narrower feeding niches relative to the grazing sea urchin Parechinus angulosus. Our results provide compelling evidence for potentially large changes in the lipid composition of intertidal invertebrate populations over relatively small temporal scales (i.e. month to month), and these have important implications for short-term field collections intended for assessing invertebrate diets.

- Description: We report on the design and application of fluorescent nanoprobes based on the covalent linking of L-glutathione-capped CdSe@ZnS quantum dots (QDs) to newly synthesized unsymmetrically substituted nickel mercaptosuccinic acid triazatetra-benzcorrole (3) and phthalocyanine (4) complexes. Fluorescence quenching of the QDs occurred on conjugation to complexes 3 or 4. The nanoprobes were selectively screened in the presence of different cations and Hg2+ showed excellent affinity in “turning ON” the fluorescence of the nanoprobes. Experimental results showed that the sensitivity of QDs-4 towards Hg2+ was much higher than that of QDs-3 nanoprobe. The mechanism of reaction has been elucidated based on the ability of Hg2+ to coordinate with the sulphur atom of the Ni complex ring and apparently “turn ON” the fluorescence of the linked QDs.
