  • Description: There is some doubt about the origin of this song. The singers claimed that it was a country song before Ntsikana used it as a hymn by the early part of the last century. Others affirm that Ntsikana himself composed it. In the 1700s Ntsikana prphesised that people would be coming from the North (the Fingos) and that the Whites would be coming with the Bible. The song was Ntsikana's own song and Rev. John Knox Bokwe set it in its present form, (information by his son J. T. Bokwe). During the song a man of about 35, danced a stamping dance. He was beautifully dressed in blanket edged with pale blue beads, wearing it like a train. He was also wearing several pounds worth of beads around his neck and torso. This song is sung at the weddings of the "Red Blanket" people. The dancer's beads were mostly in necklaces composed of strands of solid colour. He also wore double-stranded bracelets of pale blue and green beads. He carried a beautiful beaded animal skin, part of which had been sewn up to form a bag with a bead tasselled ornament. The blanket had rows and ornaments of pearl buttons sewn on it and was coloured with red ochre. Wedding song

  • Description: Clapping accampanied by a rapping on the drums greeted Chief Botha whenever he appeared. Each dance song began with the boys kneeling, singing each into his cupped hand, bobbing and swaying to the rhythm whilst the girls stood nearby, exactly like in the previous item. At a given signal the boys rose and went on dancing standing up. The word "Gubura" is pronounced "GHUBUKHA" (Kh as in loch). The peculiar leopard like snarl, or cough or grunt which the Xhosa make in their throats is noticeable throughout these songs. They are very fond of making it out of context, just as an exclamation.   • Description: This dance was performed by the married women standing in a circle. In the second part of the song they say: "The person who grinds the corn for the beer has a lot to say."- Some of the women had painted their faces with pale yellow ochre.- They wore pale blue blankets, were lavishly decorated with beads, mostly in sky blue and white, wore calf length beaded skirts, and a great many brass wire bracelets. In some cases, the typical headring was made of a leather strap (a dog's collar) studded with brass studs, edged and fringed with sky blue and white beads. Umgouzo girl's initiation dance.

  • Description: Some very spirited solo performances were put up by individuals who dashed out of a line to take up a new song, each replacing the last man. The first song indicated that the hero of the song had a case to bring. The second, that he should be caught. The third one that he should be held, and so on. Each of the many singers and dancers liked to come out into the ring, shout his individual cries and introduce his own song. The explanation behind these words is that the people who consult a diviner are always asked to slaughter one of their cattle. They consult diviners frequently and thus become gradually improverished.- The word "yombela" or hand clapping alludes to the custom of clapping at the command of the diviner when he tells a man's fortune.
