- The purpose of this study was to do a comparative investigation on the acid- and heat catalysed polymerisation and resinification of furfuryl alcohol and the effects of these polymerisation conditions on the mechanism, morphology, molecular weight and thermal properties of the polyfurfuryl alcohol resins. The formation of furfuryl alcohol polymers was confirmed using size exclusion chromatography (SEC); the synthesised polymer resins were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR,), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The effects of polymerisation conditions on the mechanism of polyfurfuryl alcohol polymerisation was a major focus of this study. The obtained results confirm that the surface topology, mechanism of polymerisation, thermal behaviour and molecular weights of polyfurfuryl alcohol polymer resins are dependent on the polymerisation condition. The acid and heat catalysed polyfurfuryl alcohol resin polymers presented interesting and promising results.
