  • Description: When asked why they played music like this, they replied, "To give our haters courage." In view of the severe troubles with which they and their people were to be confronted in the years ahead one can only hope that their music did indeed give them and their families that courage to face their ordeals in the Kasai and the Katanga so shortly to overtake them. The flute player uses voiced notes while he blows. The music is sometimes played to the "Sultan", the chief, 'in order to refresh his spirit'. Nyundu Gabriel said that when he was feeling sad, tired of depressed he would play this music to cheer himself up. The Chisanzhi (Mbira) keeps up a fascinating accompaniment.   • Description: The low roaring sound towards the end is produced by the lips and cheeks of the women and is not produced in the throat, (as the Xhosa do). The women usually used a gourd when making this sound, holding their mouths into the orifice of the gourd. They appear to blow through their pursed lips first on one side and then on the other, alternately. No gourds were used on this occasion. This item which was recorded at the Wankie Colliery several hundred miles from the district of origin of the performers, appears to have been influenced by foreign mission techniques, especially in the correct iambic stress at the end of lines.   • Description: The chisanzhi were resonated on gourds (painted and decorated) which are called chilo-o. The chisanzhi-chinene was made out of the central ribs of palm-fronds. The 2 dancers wore tribal dress with colobus monkey-skin belted round their waists, multiple, girdles of black and red twisted thongs and bells slung at the back of the waist. One wore a colobus monkey skin headdress. Panpipes- Shiba. These were end-blown flutes, in small rafts of 2 or 3. Kalombo dance with 1 chisanzhi-chinene mbira (in a raft with bamboo notes), 2 chisanzhi mbira, 4 sets of panpipes, 1 basket rattle and a stick tapped on the side of gourd resonator.

  • Description: One drummer raised and lowered the pitch of his drum by pressing his left elbow on and off the membrane of the drum. This excellent item gives a good impression of the spirit of the Mambala dance, the attractive lift to the rhythm, the sure participation of the dancers and the clever drumming of the men. The tone value of the mirliton placed on the side of the closed drums is well illustrated. The Mambala is clearly an enjoyable dance.   • Description: The bambo slatted instrument made of a raft of palm fronds is called the female instrument- in spite of the fact that it is the bass instrument. The players only played the two lowest notes as if, he said "they were drums." This is one of the many Lulua funeral songs and is sung by those friends and relatives who go to condole with a bereaved parent. Mourning song with 2 box chisanzhi, 1 chisanzhi-chinene, 2 goblet drums, pinned, weighted, closed, with mirlitons and 1 basket rattle (ligazi).

  • Description: The scale of these two instruments is not clear from these examples. It would appear to be heptatonic in one case and hexatonic or even pentatonic in the order. The fact that an adequate number on intervals exist in the lower octave and are not complete in either, argues an ablity to think heptatonically.
