- Description: Mathematics in South Africa is one of the subjects that is considered ‘difficult’ by many learners. The proof of this statement is reflected by the low mathematical pass rate in many South African schools. One of the challenges that has been highlighted by learners and teachers is that the language of mathematics is challenging. This implies that learners find it difficult to understand some of the mathematical terminologies and content that is being taught. The main reason for the challenge of grasping mathematical terminologies that has been cited by learners and educators is the language of learning and teaching (LOLT). Mathematics is taught in English in most South African schools even though many learners speak one of the indigenous South African official languages (if one excludes English and Afrikaans) at home and get to use and be exposed to English as the medium of learning and teaching only at school. While mathematics remains a challenge in South Africa, research shows that when home languages are used in a mathematics classroom, it enhances the learners understanding. However, it is not always simple to transfer mathematics from English to an African language. There are complexities associated with translation that include the lack of vocabulary in the target language which in this case is Xitsonga. The lack of terminologies in Xitsonga is one of the challenges that occur during the process of translation. This purpose of this research is to examine the challenges of translating mathematical terminologies from English into Xitsonga and to find the strategies that can be used to assist learners to improve their understanding of mathematics. As such, a qualitative research method will be used to select the mathematical terminologies extracted froma mathematics bilingual dictionary with the aim of examining the quality of the translation and identifying the challenges that have been experience by translators. , Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Humanities, School of Language, Media and Communication, 2024

Translation strategies and procedures Used in the translation of culture-specific lexical Items from English to Sepedi

- Description: This study investigates effective translation strategies and procedures used in the translation of culture-specific lexical items from English to Sepedi. The premise is that current translations from English to Sepedi are inadequate because they are not culture-specifically grounded. The purpose of this study is to overcome this shortcoming. Culture-specific lexical items such as idioms, proverbs, quotes and other fixed expressions are notorious for their untranslatability and non-equivalence, both of which are cumbersome to the transference of stylistic features and meaning between English and Sepedi as a language pair. The researcher employs a qualitative approach and the interpretivist paradigm, which originates from hermeneutics to investigate the research question. This study adopts a multi-theoretical approach. However, hermeneutics and mainly seven translation procedures proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet (1958/1995: 31-32) are used for analysing and interpreting data. The sample units are drawn using a purposive sampling method. The data collected, reviewed and analysed comprise source and target texts (ST-TT) pairs from various genres. Translation with commentary is also used as a complementary research method to examine the effective application of the investigated translation strategies and procedures to address non-equivalence and pre-empt ambiguity. The results of this study reveal that translation strategies and procedures coincide with the theories from which they originate. Secondly, it was found that the efficacy of translation strategies and procedures employed to translate culture-specific lexical items from English to Sepedi is influenced by the translator’s lexical choice. Thirdly, this study highlights the importance of linguistic and cultural competence in the translation of culture-specific lexical items from English to Sepedi. Lastly, this study discovered that the effective application of translation strategies and procedures to translate culture-specific lexical items from English to Sepedi depends on the translator’s adherence to principles of translation. , Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Humanities, Applied Language Studies, 2021

- Description: This study seeks to find what problems and process of interpreting are experienced by professional interpreters in the criminal justice system in South Africa. This study commences with an outlook of the origins and development of types of interpretation and then proceeds with critical review of scholarly literature dealing with interpretation in multilingual courtroom. This study explores the flawed language policy and its impracticality for the Eastern Cape courtrooms. This study undertakes a critical analysis of the current legislation (Bills & Acts). This study explores the extent to which the court automatic review proceedings act as a gatekeeper in ensuring against prejudice that can result in the non-use and use of indigenous languages in the trial courtroom within the Eastern Cape jurisdiction. Furthermore this study focuses on cases taken for review based on mis-understanding, mis-communication and wrongful interpretation that result in irregularities that appear on court records. This study also investigates the primary barriers for the use of African languages as languages of record in the courtroom. An eclectic sociolinguistic approach which encompasses the ethnography of speaking, and discourse analysis (observation in the courtroom) is used as a methodology in this study. Furthermore, the analysis of case-law forms part of the methodology alongside court observation. This study saw court actors from different spheres of the legal profession give their personal views and encounters with regards the art and the state of court interpreting in the province of the Eastern Cape. This state of affairs may have disastrous and far-reaching effects in that incorrect and/or imperfect translation may relate to the very facts that are crucial for the determination of the case. At the end recommendations are given on how to remedy the current state of affairs.
