- Description: Despite government intervention, a significant proportion of businesses fail within the first few years of operation, and the unemployment rate remains high. If local government is assisting SMMEs in construction, it is important to look at whether it is addressing the primary issues of preventing SMMESs in construction from failing. Because the construction industry employs many unskilled workers, it is also negatively impacted by the number of businesses that are closing or going out of business. Purposive sampling, thematic analysis, and a qualitative approach were used in this documentary research. A total of 50 documents that addressed the role of local government in supporting and developing the SMMEs in construction at NMBM were reviewed. The findings of the study indicate that 86% of the documents reviewed indicate that SMMEs in construction to participate in Support Programmes as one of the potential complementary strategies for local government to support the growth of SMMEs in the construction industry and help them create jobs. Furthermore, the results of the study also indicate that 86% of the documents reviewed state late payments as one of the major challenges leading to the failure of the SMMEs in the NMBM construction industry. This research has also proposed a sub section in the finance department at NMBM that to deal with the payment of SMMEs including SMMEs in the construction industry, as a potential change to the current support structure and legislation of local government that are meant to boost the performance of SMMEs in the construction industry and help them accomplish their stated objectives of creating jobs. , Thesis (MPhil) -- Faculty of Business and Economic Sciences, School of Economics, Development and Tourism, 2024

- Description: Agriculture has been a cornerstone of human society since its inception, evolving significantly regarding its meaning and goals. This study examines the role of agri-preneurship in addressing socio-economic challenges in Nqabane, Mbhashe Local Municipality. Specifically, the study aims to (1) assess the impact of the "triple challenges" (poverty, inequality, and unemployment) on unemployed youth in Nqabane, (2) explore how agri-preneurship can help mitigate these challenges, and (3) recommend strategies for leveraging agri-preneurship to tackle these issues. A quantitative research approach was employed, utilizing a closed-ended questionnaire administered to 100 youth agri-preneurs in Nqabane. Data were analyzed using SPSS (version 27) and AMOS software for structural equation modeling. Confirmatory factor analysis identified the items corresponding to specific factors in the research instrument, while Cronbach’s alpha assessed the reliability of the factor structure. Findings reveal that most youths experience inequality, while unemployment affects all participants. Furthermore, the majority believe that agri-preneurship can effectively address poverty, inequality, and unemployment. The study also found broad support for youth involvement in agri-preneurship, recognizing its role in poverty reduction and its contribution to the country’s GDP. Based on the study’s findings, the study recommends promoting agri-preneurship through targeted training programmes, such as workshops on sustainable farming, business management, marketing, and financial literacy. Partnerships with local governments, NGOs, and educational institutions are essential for providing resources and support to empower youth for successful agricultural careers. The study concludes a pressing need for promoting youth agri-preneurship in rural areas. , Degree: M. Public Administration

Exploring job search and the causes of endogenous unemployment: evidence from Duncan Village, South Africa
- Authors: Duff, Patrick Alexander

- Description: Despite high rates of unemployment in South Africa, there is little consensus about its origins and solutions to the problem. Job search (how and when people search for work)is one aspect of the unemployment problem. Job search is shown to be a complex process strongly linked to the endogenous structure of the labour market. The flaws in traditional methods (theoretical and measurement) highlight this. Using data from a tailor-made survey in Duncan Village (a peri-urban area in Buffalo City, South Africa) the research examines factors that influence the effectiveness of job search. The results show that mode of search (how people look for work) is used as a signal by employers. Degrees of success are stratified amongst searchers using either ‘word of mouth’, place-to-place or formal modes of search. The thesis provides a method-test to reveal a complex body of evidence that has yet to be fully explored by practitioners in this field.
