- Description: Traditionally, parents were able to protect, monitor, guide, and support adolescents within the microsystem. However, in a society where the technosystemic digital world has entered microsystemic parent-adolescent interactions and the developmental process of adolescents’ identity formation, it is crucial to understand how parents experience and perceive the role that social media plays in their adolescent children’s identity development and safety. The primary aim of this study is to understand parents’ perceptions and experiences of social media use in adolescent identity formation and safety. The researcher utilised a qualitative research approach with an exploratory descriptive design. A non-probability purposive sample was employed, and telephonic semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 participants. All of the participants were parents of adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18. Interviews were conducted until data saturation was reached. The participants’ responses were analysed using thematic analysis. Four categories arose from the data analysis and demonstrate that social media was perceived to have both a helpful and unhelpful impact on adolescents’ identity formation and safety. The first category refers to the perceived role social media plays in adolescents’ development of physical, gender, sexual, and social identity. The permanence of social media, the role parent-adolescent relationships play in adolescents’ online identity experiences, and identity commitment and exploration maturity emerged as key themes. The second category of key findings associated with social media and adolescents’ safety include social media violations, the mental health of adolescents, emotional regulation, identity formation, and reality illusion as themes that emerged from the data. The third category encompasses the resources that parents perceive to be of assistance in maintaining and enhancing safe social media use among adolescents, namely parent-adolescent relationships, remaining educated, and adjusting monitoring in a developmentally appropriate manner. The fourth category refers to a network of resources that parents apply to maintain and increase safe social media use by their adolescent children. The major reason adduced for this disturbing development is the increasing reduction of pupils because of poor performance. However, it is not clear whether all stakeholders are involved in the school rationalisation programme. Schools are custodians of children’s education and thus stakeholders such as parents, teachers, learners, community members and traditional leaders are important stakeholders in the education system and therefore, should participate fully in policy development and implementation processes. This study investigated how stakeholders in the school system such as teachers, learners, parents, and traditional leaders participated in the implementation of the school rationalisation policy. Using a qualitative approach within the interpretive research paradigm, the study investigated the case of two secondary schools that were closed and merged in the Amatole West Education District of the Eastern Cape Province. The researcher adopted this research approach because of its exploratory, descriptive, and contextual nature. A non-probability purposive sample was selected from the categories of teachers, learners and parents including traditional leaders of the communities of the two schools that were investigated. Data was collected using semi-structured face-to-face interviews and focus group discussions, while the content analysis technique was used to analyse the data. The data collected and analysed was also tested for its trustworthiness and ethical imperatives were also considered. The study revealed a lack of proper consultation of stakeholders prior to and during the implementation of school rationalisation policy. The DoE, to give an impression that stakeholders participated, in order to comply with the legislation, adopted a pseudo-participation strategy. This lack of consultation and pseudo-participation of stakeholders declared their participation as undemocratic. As a result, many challenges emerged and there were also unintended consequences that manifested themselves in the process. These findings were then translated into conclusions. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that the authorities should consult with the relevant stakeholders and create platforms that will allow them to express their views about any proposed school rationalisation policy before it can be implemented. The DoE should also consider all relevant legislative imperatives before embarking to the implementation of its decision to close or merge schools. In compelling situations where school closures are necessary, the anticipated social and economic impacts and unintended impacts on learners must be planned and mitigated before the school closure policy can be implemented. Lastly, the relevant authorities should develop an alternative policy framework to address the gaps and challenges that manifested themselves during the implementation of the current school rationalisation policy framework. - Description: Video is a prominent teaching and learning tool within foreign language (FL) textbook media packages in the 21st century. While studies undertaken in the Global North highlight that video materials in the FL classroom have the potential to influence learning and cultural knowledge acquisition, there is a lack of research on the manner in which pedagogically designed videos influence adult FL learning and cultural knowledge acquisition in a South African context. In this study, I explore the opportunities and challenges in terms of language learning and cultural knowledge acquisition that arise from three pedagogic videos in the Menschen A1 textbook which is used in teaching students registered for the German Studies 1 course at Rhodes University. I compare and contrast two sets of data to examine the relationship between pedagogic video and student knowledge acquisition: the results of a digital multimodal discourse analysis (DMDA) of these videos, and questionnaires and transcriptions collected from semi-structured group interviews with German Studies 1 students. These questionnaires and transcriptions were analysed thematically. Findings in terms of the language learning experience indicate that actor over-exaggeration and visual aids assist students when learning German at this level with this type of video. However, these visual aids can be distracting and confusing without balanced representation and contextual information. Differences between videos in terms of speech rate seem to affect students’ perceptions of their ability to comprehend the videos. Students reported forming only positive impressions of German culture(s) on the basis of the videos. In general, students find Germans portrayed as friendly and helpful in the videos. The results of this investigation provide recommendations for the optimal use of this type of teaching and learning resource, for example, teachers/ lecturers/ facilitators should allow for focus group discussions on cultural discourse to occur in order to balance stereotype formation and should consider the speech rate of videos for language learning. , Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Humanities, Linguistics and Applied Language Studies, 2021

An increase in cyberbullying results in an increased prevalence of the occurrence of psychological distress in the form of short-term consequences as well as long-term chronic impacts such as depression, anxiety, and decreased life satisfaction. This qualitative study aimed to explore and describe the experiences of young adults who have experienced cyberbullying and the perceived impact of this experience on their psychological well-being. Qualitative research is a flexible exploratory and descriptive approach to understanding the lived experiences of an individual and their subjective view of a specific phenomenon through an interpretivist paradigm. This study utilised purposive and snowball sampling of Nelson Mandela University students aged 18 – 25 years old to gain a total of 6 participants for data gathering through semi-structured interviews. This research process followed a retrospective perspective which focuses on the specific meaning-making and understandings which that individual places on that experience, in relation to their psychological well-being. Thematic analysis was employed to analyse the data and trustworthiness criteria and was utilised throughout to ensure the credibility of the study. It was found that cyberbullying, through multiple forms and methods, has various short-term and long-term perceived impacts in several spheres. The perceived psychological impacts occurred in the short-term and were internalised to extend to long-term impacts on psychological well-being, of which the majority were negative. There are influencing factors to the development, coping and management of perceived long-term impacts which reflect the outcomes on well-being. The Positive Seed scenario portrays a positive image of hope and determination, with positive institutional innovations, as well as positive innovative learning methodologies. While the Shankar scenario also portrays positive institutional innovations, it is lacking in terms of innovation learning methodologies. The Negative Seed is lacking in both innovation learning methodologies, as well as institutional innovations. Finally, the fourth scenario, that of the ‘What If’ scenario, portrays a scenario whether good innovative learning methodologies exist, or not, but lacks institutional innovativeness. The goal of this thesis was not only to affirm the known and knowable about the skills-development environment, but it is also aimed at exploring its future within the 4IR towards 2060. This was achieved by scenario planning and the Causal Layered Analyses (CLA) methodology, which is designed to help navigate through this creative process. This thesis starts off by identifying the forces of change, which it then combines in various ways to create the set of scenarios about how the future of the skills-development sector could evolve towards 2060. This thesis provides useful insight into drivers for change for the South African skills-development sector and how to anticipate skills-readiness in South Africa within the 4IR towards 2060 in accordance with the CLA and scenario planning methods. - Description: Numerous studies have investigated the use of blended learning by academic staff at tertiary institutions. The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of blended learning by academic staff at the Faculty of Health Sciences at Nelson Mandela University. A related objective was to identify barriers and facilitators to the adoption of blended learning by academic staff. A sequential, exploratory mixed-methods design was adopted for this study whereby Phase 1 (focus groups) was used to inform Phase 2 (questionnaire) of the study. Results were analysed from both phases and organised according to strategies, support, and structure of a blended learning adoption framework. Existing support structures to assist with blended learning adoption, understanding of what blended learning is, confidence in using blended learning tools, and time to attend training were some of the findings of the study. The researcher concluded that academic staff in the Health Sciences Faculty at Nelson Mandela University are positioned in the second stage of the blended learning adoption framework, namely the early adoption stage of blended learning. - Description: The Performance Management and Development System (PMDS) is a human resource management (HRM) strategy utilised for enhancing employees’ performance. The strategy has gained momentum over recent years in the public sector. Much interest in the contemporary world is centred on optimising the performance of both the individual and organisations. As a result, many organisations are introducing and strengthening their PMDS implementation. Effective implementation and evaluation of employees’ performance and continuous development is an essential element for any organisation’s survival and growth. Thus, it is the obligation of any organisation to ensure that its employees are highly motivated to perform so as to obtain organisational goals and objectives. This study explored the perceptions of employees regarding the PMDS in the Department of Social Development in the Eastern Cape (ECDSD), and was underpinned by Herzberg’s (2005) Two-factor Theory, which focusses on the feelings of employees towards their working environments. The study adopted a qualitative research approach with the use of both primary (interviews) and secondary data collection methods in order to gather data that would answer the research questions. Results from the data collection and analysis revealed that the employees within the ECDSD are knowledgeable about the PMDS and that the majority of participants perceive the strategy as appropriate for enhancing employee performance. This study also found that employees currently face a myriad of challenges regarding PMDS implementation within the Department that include a lack of feedback, a lack of transparency, insufficient training, and a lack of fairness. Training, strengthening communication, providing feedback on performance, and a migration away from financial rewards were identified as strategies that could enhance the proper implementation of the PMDS that best serves the interests of employees. The study recommends that the ECDSD work closely with its Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) in order to constantly monitor and evaluate PMDS implementation. - Description: The Performance Management and Development System (PMDS) is a human resource management (HRM) strategy utilised for enhancing employees’ performance. The strategy has gained momentum over recent years in the public sector. Much interest in the contemporary world is centred on optimising the performance of both the individual and organisations. As a result, many organisations are introducing and strengthening their PMDS implementation. Effective implementation and evaluation of employees’ performance and continuous development is an essential element for any organisation’s survival and growth. Thus, it is the obligation of any organisation to ensure that its employees are highly motivated to perform so as to obtain organisational goals and objectives. This study assessed the perceptions of the role of L. camara on the well-being and rural livelihoods of local communities in the Vhembe Biosphere Reserve using household surveys. A total of 300 surveys were administered in six villages. The study further used a two-pronged approach to examine invasion extent and management options. The two-pronged approach included (i) detailed vegetation surveys in 50 household yards within each village, and (ii) focus group to solicit local knowledge of invasion extent and managing L. camara by the rural communities. The results of the study showed that almost all the respondents knew L. camara and could describe it. Most of the respondents were of the view that L. camara had no negative impacts on their livelihoods. Other respondents stated costs associated with L. camara were more than benefits and wanted a reduction in L. camara densities in the area. Most respondents wanted more government intervention to help in managing L. camara, this is because of the perceived future impacts of L. camara. Vegetation survey results showed no significant difference in L. camara abundances and plant heights among the six study villages. The average number of L. camara counted per household yard in all villages was (2.41 ± 0.20) plants, with average plant basal diameter of (0.94 ± 0.02 cm). There were significant differences in canopy width of L. camara among the six study villages. Plant basal diameter was high in Tshakhuma (1.05 ± 0.04 m) and Duthuni (1.00 ± 0.04 m) villages, and low in Ha Mutsha village (0.82 ± 0.03 m). Lantana camara canopy width at household level across all villages averaged 1.34 ± 0.03 m. Canopy cover was high in Tshakhuma village (1.70 ± 0.09 m) and low at Ha Mutsha village (1.03 ± 0.03 m). In all six village focus group discussions, it was noted that mechanical clearing of L. camara was the most used method, but they reported minimum help from the government particularly Working for Water (WfW). The study concludes that L. camara has no substantial adverse impacts to most of the respondents. The study further noted that L. camara is dominant in most household yards ii and that management is taking place however current control options are not enough on their own. Suggestions for further research are to explore more alternative indigenous species present or easily accessible to the community members which may offer the same benefits as IAS. In this context, the study investigated the stakeholders’ perceptions of Shared Value (SV) within the mining industry of South Africa. This included establishing antecedents and outcomes of SV within the South African mining industry. The study also aimed to fill the research gap and contribute to the existing body of knowledge regarding the mining industry and SV in South Africa. The comprehensive literature review in this study included discussion on the overview of the South African mining industry, theories related to SV, theoretical perspectives on SV, and the experiential studies supporting the study’s hypothetical model. The empirical investigation conducted by means of a survey was undertaken under the unprecedented conditions of COVID-19 pandemic. The primary data was statistically examined in six phases: exploratory factor analysis (EFA); Cronbach’s alpha; descriptive statistics; Pearson’s product correlation; and regression analysis. The ANOVA was also conducted to determine the influence of demographic factors on SV perceptions. The empirical results confirmed that automation and innovation (through three pillars, namely, innovation for value chain inclusivity, automation and business model innovation, infrastructure development) and employment conditions are the antecedents of SV. The study illustrated three approaches of SV: reconceiving the product/service and markets, reimagining value chain productivity and development of the enabling environment. Furthermore, the study revealed competitive advantage and sustainability performance as the outcomes of SV. The synthesized complexes include axially modified porphyrins quaternized through an axial ligand. All the asymmetrically substituted porphyrins were linked to the NPs via an ester bond and the symmetrically substituted porphyrins were linked (peripherally and /or axially) via self-assembly (Ag-S and/or Ag-N). The impact of axial modification, peripheral substituents, conjugation to the NPs, the number of positive charges, and the chain length of the alkyl halides quaternizing agents on PACT efficacy and photophysicochemical properties of porphyrins were studied. High singlet oxygen quantum yields and antimicrobial log reductions were observed. Lipophilicity and hydrophilicity of the porphyrins were also studies, where the complexes quaternized with methyl iodide showed relatively high hydrophilicity character. Upon in vitro PACT studies, the quaternized complexes were observed to have 0% viable colony, signifying their effectiveness. Moreover, the highest log reductions of 9.27 were observed against S. aureus and 9.58 were observed against E. coli. The findings from this work delineate that singlet oxygen generation alone is not a distinct factor on the PACT efficacy of the porphyrin complexes, since some of the complexes have practically the same singlet oxygen quantum but different PACT activity. Physical activity, physical fitness, sedentary behaviour and screen time profiles of primary school children in a school within the Makana Municipality, Eastern Cape, South Africa

- Description: There is a lack of data on the physical activity, physical fitness and sedentary behaviour of children in South Africa. Furthermore chronic diseases such as type II diabetes and coronary heart disease have been linked to childhood inactivity, and improving cardiorespiratory fitness and increasing levels of physical activity has been shown to be beneficial in reducing the risk of such diseases. In South Africa more broadly there is a lack of information on levels of physical activity and sedentary behaviour as well as physical fitness measures particularly in children. Objective: The purpose of this study was to enhance the existing body of knowledge on this, by measuring the prevalence of physical inactivity, sedentary behaviour and screen time of primary school children in a private school from the Makana Municipal region in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, where the evidence is most sparse. A secondary aim was to assess levels of physical fitness in this cohort, as well as to compare across grades and sexes. Method: After ethical approval was granted, stature and body mass measurements were taken and body mass index was computed for primary school children (Grade one to seven) from a private school in the Makana Municipality. Sitting stature was measured in order to determine each child’s peak height velocity and maturity offset. Five different physical fitness tests were conducted on the children and blood pressure and heart rate values were measured at rest. Physical activity and screen time questionnaires were completed by the children’s parents for a seven day period. Results: Females were found to mature faster than males. In addition females were more physically active (Females= 916 min/week; Males= 669 min/week) while also accumulating more sedentary time (Females= 1241 min/week; Males= 970 min/week) as compared to males, although no significant differences were found between males and females for these variables. The sample participated in more than 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and less than two hours of screen time daily, which is in accordance with guidelines. No differences were found between grades and sexes for accumulated screen time. Strength increased significantly with grade and age, and there were also statistical differences between the sexes for all three strength measures with males being stronger than females. Females were more flexible than males and no statistical differences were found between sexes for the shuttle run test. Blood pressure correlated positively with mass, as did all the strength measures as well as maturity offset. No correlations were found between screen time and all other variables. A negative relationship was recorded between screen time and physical activity, although not significant. For females a strong positive correlation was found between sedentary behaviour and physical activity. Conclusion: The study was successful in adding to the body of knowledge regarding the prevalence of physical inactivity, sedentary behaviour and screen time within school children from the Makana Municipality in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The sample was considered physically active as they accumulated on average more than 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily (Males= 96 min/day; Females 130 min/day), which is in accordance with guidelines recommended by the World Health Organization (World Health Organization, 2018). The sample accumulated more sedentary behaviour than physical activity, although not significant. Screen time was below regulations of two hours daily, indicating this population participated in more non screen related sedentary behaviour. More research is needed into the risks presented with different forms of sedentary behaviour. Physical fitness increased with increasing grade and age and males were considerably more fit. The current study did not present any concern with regards to the effects of increased physical activity and fitness levels within school aged children. Furthermore chronic diseases such as type II diabetes and coronary heart disease have been linked to childhood inactivity, and improving cardiorespiratory fitness and increasing levels of physical activity has been shown to be beneficial in reducing the risk of such diseases. In South Africa more broadly there is a lack of information on levels of physical activity and sedentary behaviour as well as physical fitness measures particularly in children. Objective: The purpose of this study was to enhance the existing body of knowledge on this, by measuring the prevalence of physical inactivity, sedentary behaviour and screen time of primary school children in a private school from the Makana Municipal region in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, where the evidence is most sparse. A secondary aim was to assess levels of physical fitness in this cohort, as well as to compare across grades and sexes. Method: After ethical approval was granted, stature and body mass measurements were taken and body mass index was computed for primary school children (Grade one to seven) from a private school in the Makana Municipality. Sitting stature was measured in order to determine each child’s peak height velocity and maturity offset. Five different physical fitness tests were conducted on the children and blood pressure and heart rate values were measured at rest. Physical activity and screen time questionnaires were completed by the children’s parents for a seven day period. Results: Females were found to mature faster than males. In addition females were more physically active (Females= 916 min/week; Males= 669 min/week) while also accumulating more sedentary time (Females= 1241 min/week; Males= 970 min/week) as compared to males, although no significant differences were found between males and females for these variables. The sample participated in more than 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and less than two hours of screen time daily, which is in accordance with guidelines. No differences were found between grades and sexes for accumulated screen time. Strength increased significantly with grade and age, and there were also statistical differences between the sexes for all three strength measures with males being stronger than females. Females were more flexible than males and no statistical differences were found between sexes for the shuttle run test. Blood pressure correlated positively with mass, as did all the strength measures as well as maturity offset. No correlations were found between screen time and all other variables. A negative relationship was recorded between screen time and physical activity, although not significant. For females a strong positive correlation was found between sedentary behaviour and physical activity. Conclusion: The study was successful in adding to the body of knowledge regarding the prevalence of physical inactivity, sedentary behaviour and screen time within school children from the Makana Municipality in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The sample was considered physically active as they accumulated on average more than 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily (Males= 96 min/day; Females 130 min/day), which is in accordance with guidelines recommended by the World Health Organization (World Health Organization, 2018). The sample accumulated more sedentary behaviour than physical activity, although not significant. Screen time was below regulations of two hours daily, indicating this population participated in more non screen related sedentary behaviour. More research is needed into the risks presented with different forms of sedentary behaviour. Physical fitness increased with increasing grade and age and males were considerably more fit. The current study did not present any concern with regards to the effects of increased physical activity and fitness levels within school aged children. In this respect, there are two schools of thought regarding the question whether the exercise of such a power may be the subject of a judicial inquiry, and if so, to what extent. This thesis provides insight into the nature and origin of the President’s power to appoint cabinet members. It also delves deeply into issues raised by the doctrine of separation of powers surrounding the exercise of this power. The core focus of the thesis is on the extent to which the President can be held accountable for making cabinet appointments. The main argument advanced is that because South Africa is a country founded on the principles of constitutional supremacy and the rule of law, every exercise of public power should be subject to the Constitution, including the President’s power to appoint cabinet members. The determination of whether public power is in line with the dictates of the Constitution calls for an independent judiciary, with the power to rule on any aspect of societal disputes. In pursuit of the above, the thesis analyses the constitutional provisions and case law relevant to the President’s powers as Head of State. The research highlights, amongst others, the President’s duty to give reasons for cabinet appointments. On this point it is submitted that the President does have the constitutional obligation to give reasons for cabinet appointments. Comparisons with other jurisdictions on cabinet appointment processes and oversight mechanisms regarding the exercise of that power form the backdrop against which recommendations are made in the thesis. Proposals are advanced for increased legislative oversight in cabinet appointments. Such oversight should focus on inter alia, the President’s duty to furnish reasons for cabinet appointments. The thesis also proposes a constitutional framework in terms of which Parliament plays a role in the selection of appointees to cabinet. The rationale behind this recommendation is the minimising of instances in which the judiciary is accused of overreaching on the powers of the political organs of government. The problem is that in SA there is a limited amount of research available regarding these complex investigations into the problems of governance of SMEs in South Africa. The objectives of this study were to conduct an extensive literature review on governance of small businesses, and the factors which affect the governance of such small businesses and what key resources could be identified and built up for the successful adoption of innovations in the sector, to lead to an understand of weaknesses in the current capacity-building of SMEs. It also sought to determine the current situations contributing to the weaknesses of SMEs; to understand challenges in the governance of small businesses in South Africa, to determine the types of financial support that exists and the contribution of financial support to the development of SMEs and to understand the ways government can help and develop SMEs. Qualitative research was used because it is more subjective and relies on experiences and opinions of participants. The study used exploratory research. An interview protocol for semi-structured face-to-face interviews was designed and used to obtain the views of SME owners and managers. The findings of the study showed that a lack of financial support is one of the challenges in the current capacity-building of small businesses. Moreover, the findings of the study showed that access to information on available markets and on the creation of new opportunities is another weakness in the current capacity-building of small businesses. SMEs need access to buyers, information on product demand, pricing knowledge and standards. The findings of the study also showed that the lack of support through business management knowledge is one of the weaknesses in the current capacity-building of small businesses. The findings showed that, most small business owners do not have the needed business management knowledge to transform their businesses. The study recommends that the government assist small businesses with financial support. It is also suggested that small businesses have human resource management knowledge to manage people who help them develop their businesses. Moreover, the study recommends that small businesses embrace new technology to boost their business by easy operations using new technologies. Product-dust levels released from pharmaceutical manufacturing equipment and related health-based exposure risks

- Description: The study evaluated the product-dust levels that were released from manufacturing equipment during routine manufacturing of highly potent active pharmaceutical ingredients. The study was performed at a high containment manufacturing facility for Product X. These assessments are necessary to evaluate the level of containment performance in correlation with health-based exposure limits; and from this, to develop proper control strategies for the workplace. The equipment that was evaluated in this study included barrier systems (isolators, isolation boxes), dust-proof decanting systems (split valves), soft connections covered with continuous liners, and airtight intermediate bulk containers. Methodology The amount of uncontrolled product-dust that was released during the manufacturing process was quantified by establishing an air and surface monitoring programme. This was then compared to health-based exposure levels (HBEL’s) to ensure operator safety and to implement an effective control strategy. Air monitoring involves the sampling of airborne particles through filtration of the air with a filter using a sampling pump to draw a quantifiable volume of air through the filter. The filter is then tested in a laboratory which extracts and quantifies the amount of highly potent active pharmaceutical ingredient (HPAPI) on the filter. Surface monitoring is used to assess the level of product contamination on a surface. The technique uses a suitable adsorbent material to physically adsorb surface contaminants from the surface by wiping or swabbing. Protocols were designed based on a risk assessment that took the manufacturing process, literature, and facility design into consideration. Results The HBEL level of 0.2 μg/m3 that was calculated for the manufacturing process of Product X was found to be lower than the HBEL of 1.4 μg/m3; and consequently, the level of operator exposure was well within the acceptable occupational exposure limits. All surface monitoring results passed the acceptance criteria of less than 0.032 mg/100 cm2 except for excursions that occurred during breaches in containment. Conclusion The air monitoring programme facilitated the quantification of the product-dust levels that were released into the primary manufacturing areas; which could then be verified against the HBEL of Product X. The surface monitoring programme facilitated the quantification of the product residue on non-product contact surfaces in the facility; which could then be verified against the HBEL of Product X. The objectives of the study were met for Level 2 of the high containment suite as it was possible to calculate the product-dust released from the manufacturing equipment and the product residue on external equipment surfaces and non-product contact surfaces in order to verify these levels against the relevant HBEL’s. The aim of this study is to understand the potential meanings attached to PTSD symptoms and the role of culture on these meaning ascriptions. These meanings are explored through the perception of Mental Healthcare Practitioners. The study uses qualitative methodology; specifically, an exploratory and descriptive design. The sample is identified through non-probability purposive sampling, and the data is collected through semi-structured interviews. The data is analysed using thematic analysis which identified major themes of understanding and acceptance. These themes followed a non-linear and interactive process, and present participants ascribing varying meanings to their trauma experience, PTSD symptoms and/or PTSD diagnosis. These meanings are discussed through the interpretivist lens of social constructionism. These themes followed a non-linear and interactive process, and present participants ascribing varying meanings to their trauma experience, PTSD symptoms and/or PTSD diagnosis. These meanings are discussed through the interpretivist lens of social constructionism. - Description: SMMEs are the backbone of both established and developing economies with their ability to contribute to a country’s GDP, create employment, stimulate innovation and create new revenue streams. In South Africa the majority of SMMEs do not reach the critical threshold period for sustainability, defined by the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA) as three years. This study explores twenty-five barriers and influences (nine external and sixteen internal) as experienced by small businesses operating in the city of Port Elizabeth, and their effect on the sustainability and success of the small business. The internal barriers and influences are ranked according to their relative importance to business sustainability and success as viewed by small businesses in the city of Port Elizabeth. The research is exploratory in nature and was conducted using a structured questionnaire. The findings show that the nineteen barriers and influencers that are controllable within the business are all important to the success and sustainability of small businesses. - Description: My thesis is a collection of poems that focuses on black mothering and motherhood, within the context of the Eastern Cape’s violent history, its oppressive patriarchal cultural traditions and religious structures. Drawing from my own experiences, my poems explore what Toni Morrison calls the historical ‘wounds’ of black women which are transferred to their daughters within everyday spaces like the kitchen and the lounge, through objects like tea cups, chair backs and the various foods that every black girl needs to be able to prepare in order to be ‘marriagable’, and how these continue to hurt and emotionally disfigure us. I also draw influence from Saidiya Hartman, Christina Sharpe and Tina Campt on black lives and the effects of slavery within their daily existences. And I am inspired by the intimacy and care with which Tadeusz Rosewicz writes about his relationship with his mother in Mother Departs and Sandra Cisneros’ use of interconnected vignettes to engage childhood, culture and community within marginalized space. Stylistically I am influenced by the structural innovations in Fred Moten’s The Little Edges and the dreamy landscape in the poetry of Federico Garcia Lorca. My collection includes prose and lyrical poetry, combining more formal sound and rhythmic structures with free verse, to bring to life motherhood and the narratives we carry from childhood into our adult lives.

Rheology behaviour of slurries as a function of particle size and ion concentration

- Description: In this work, the rheological properties of alumina slurries milled to different particle sizes were investigated. Viscosity increases as the particle size decreases. When increasing amounts of calcium hydroxide, strontium hydroxide or barium hydroxide are added, the viscosity first goes down and then goes up. This can be explained in terms of changes in pH and changes in ionic strength impacting on the surface potential of the particles in suspension. Adding the same concentration of different cations results in different viscosities, with the order being (from high to low viscosity) Ba>Sr>Ca. Effects of partial dissolution of and structural changes to the alumina particles at high pH cannot be excluded. In order to better understanding the different effects, it was attempted to measure the zeta potential of the slurries at different pH values. This resulted in highly positive zeta potential values over the complete pH range, without the observationof an iso-electric point. This does not fit to the observed changes in rheology and contrasts withliterature data.
