"I began felling trees in my youth, and did not have a son-in-law to help me (i.e. he had no daughter to be married). So I took my axe and did the work alone. People belonging to the "Sand" clan (totem) are clever, because they choose a specially large tree and worship there, considering it to be a great work of God." "There are women who despise those men who stay at home in the country, so let me go to the town to marry a wiser man." The tribe being matrilineal inherits through the female side.   • Description: Although the slit drum, or gong, is used for sending messages among this Congo tribe which lives beside the Bushimaie tributary of the Sankuru, itself a tributary of the Kasai, the great southern aem of the Congo River, it is also used as an accompaniment for dances. It is not known for certain whether it is used to communicate with the dancers during the course of a dance, as is the common practice in West Africa; but from present evidence this appears to be unlikely among the Kanyoka. Kalibambo dance song with 2 Silimba xylophones, 1 slit drum, 3 gobolet drums, handbeaten and 2 basket rattles.

  • Description: The leader of this Timbila Orchestra is a well known player and composer, Hafu Kumbani, who has a large number of new Timbila tunes to his credit. The title Bandametu womgeniso appears to be commonly used by the eastern rather than the western Chopi. The Chopi clans which live to the east of the main body of the tribe of the Inhambane District and to speak a distinctive dialect. Those who know the Chopi well, claim that this can also be detected in the style of their plyaing and dancing and in the tunings of their Timbila xylophones. Regulo Nyankowango is considered to be one of the minor chiefs under Regulo Mikumbi of the Inharrime District. Living as they do to the east of the central Chopi, their dialect is distinctive and influenced by the GiTonga of the Inhambane District. Movement from the Ngodo xylophone orchestral dance of Regulo Nyankowongo with 14 xylophones, 2 rattles and one horn.
