An overview of normative frameworks for the protection of development-induced IDPs in Kenya.
- Authors: Juma, Laurence
- Date: 2013
- Language: English
- Type: text , article
- Identifier: http://hdl.handle.net/10962/127112 , vital:35957 , https://doi.org/10.1163/17087384-12342016
- Description: Based on the assumption that development induced displacement brings new challenges that the existing protection frameworks may not be aptly suited to deal with, this article analyses how the existing laws have met this challenge and the prospects for further improvement. While its focus is on Kenya, it evaluates the normative quality of protection and standards offered by regional instruments against the existing, as well emerging, parameters for implementation at the domestic level. In this regard, the article examines the propriety of Kenya’s newly promulgated law on internal displacement in providing for protection for the development induced IDPs, the implementation programme that it establishes and its prospects for furthering the vision of the UN Guiding Principles on Internally Displaced and other regional instruments.

Dynamic geometry software as a dynamic tool for spatial exploration:
- Holzl, Reinhard, Schäfer, Marc
- Authors: Holzl, Reinhard , Schäfer, Marc
- Date: 2013
- Language: English
- Type: text , article
- Identifier: http://hdl.handle.net/10962/140871 , vital:37925 , https://hdl.handle.net/10520/EJC146065
- Description: Dynamic Geometry Software (DGS) such as GeoGebra, Geometer's Sketchpad and Cabri Geometry offer a wealth of opportunities for an exploratory style of teaching and learning Mathematics, particularly in the exploration of space and shape. The new Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) foregrounds the use of spatial skills and properties of shapes and objects "to identify, pose and solve problems creatively and critically" (South Africa. DBE, 2011, p. 9). Although the South African Mathematics curriculum no longer places importance on traditional Euclidean construction by means of straightedge and compass, DGS can nonetheless be used to engage with fundamental ideas relating to geometric shapes, symmetry and transformations. This was the impetus behind encouraging the use of GeoGebra in four township schools in the Grahamstown Education District whose Mathematics teachers participate in an ongoing in-service research and development programme hosted by Rhodes University.

Karoo volcanic and intrusive rocks: Lesotho and Eastern Cape
- Authors: Marsh, Julian S
- Date: 2013
- Language: English
- Type: text , article
- Identifier: http://hdl.handle.net/10962/144890 , vital:38388
- Description: The Karoo Igneous Province is one of the classic Mesozoic continental flood basalt provinces. At present erosion levels it comprises numerous eroded remnants of an extensive, thick volcanic sequence (largely lava flows) and a well-exposed subvolcanic intrusive complex of dykes and sheets which are particularly abundant in the underlying Karoo sedimentary strata.

Knockdown of Hop downregulates RhoC expression, and decreases pseudopodia formation and migration in cancer cell lines:

- Description: The Hsp90/Hsp70 organising protein (Hop) is a co-chaperone that mediates the interaction of Hsp90 and Hsp70 molecular chaperones during assembly of Hsp90 complexes in cells. Formation of Hsp90 complexes is a key intermediate step in the maturation and homeostasis of oncoproteins and several hormone receptors. In this paper, we demonstrate that knockdown of Hop decreased migration of Hs578T and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells. Hop was identified in isolated pseudopodia fractions; it colocalised with actin in lamellipodia, and co-sedimented with purified actin in vitro. Knockdown of Hop caused a decrease in the level of RhoC GTPase, and significantly inhibited pseudopodia formation in Hs578T cells. Our data suggest that Hop regulates directional cell migration by multiple unknown mechanisms.

Waiver of the right to judicial impartiality: comparative analysis of South African and Commonwealth jurisprudence

- Description: This paper investigates whether judicial independence and impartiality entrenched in written constitutions and recognised by the common law as fundamental requirements of fair administration of justice can be subjected to the private law principles of waiver, estoppel or acquiescence. In an attempt to answer this question, the paper suggests that the starting point should be the interrogation of whether the right alleged to be waived emanates from the constitution or administrative law. At common law, a right can be waived, insofar as the party involved had knowledge of the right and failed to assert it.

- Description: publisher version , The rapid expansion of social protection in the South provides a rich diversity of experiences and lessons on how best to reduce poverty and ultimately eradicate it. Knowledge on how best to ‘grow’ social assistance, understood as long-term institutions responsible for reducing and preventing poverty, is at a premium. This article examines the expansion of social assistance in Brazil and South Africa, two of the middle income countries widely perceived to have advanced furthest in ‘growing’ social protection. It examines three aspects: the primacy of politics in explaining the expansion of social protection and assistance, the tensions between path-dependence and innovation in terms of institutions and practices, and the poverty and inequality outcomes of social assistance expansion. The article concludes by drawing the main lessons for other developing countries.

“A road that may lead nowhere”: JM Coetzee, Tayeb Salih, and the Hospitality of Vagrant Writing

- Identifier: http://hdl.handle.net/10962/144072 , vital:38308 , https://dialnet.unirioja.es/servlet/articulo?codigo=4568814
- Description: In this article, I argue that Coetzee's writing, being alienated from history but unable to transcend it, is forced to treat its own representations with a measure of suspicion. By extension, the Coetzee text is always divided against itself. It is, in the idiom of hospitality, never quite at home with itself because it is aware that home is premised on exclusion, on the existence of an outsider, one for whom home is not a home.
