- Description: The learning and analysis of algorithms and algorithm concepts are challenging to students due to the abstract and conceptual nature of algorithms. Algorithm animation is a form of technological support tool which encourages algorithm comprehension by visualising algorithms in execution. Algorithm animation can potentially be utilised to support students while learning algorithms. Despite widespread acknowledgement for the usefulness of algorithm animation in algorithm courses at tertiary institutions, no recognised framework exists upon which algorithm animation systems can be effectively modelled. This dissertation consequently focuses on the design of an extensible algorithm animation framework to support the generation of interactive algorithm animations. A literature and extant system review forms the basis for the framework design process. The result of the review is a list of requirements for a pedagogically effective algorithm animation system. The proposed framework supports the pedagogic requirements by utilising an independent layer structure to support the generation and display of algorithm animations. The effectiveness of the framework is evaluated through the implementation of a prototype algorithm animation system using sorting algorithms as a case study. This dissertation is successful in proposing a framework to support the development of algorithm animations. The prototype developed will enable the integration of algorithm animations into the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s teaching model, thereby permitting the university to conduct future research relating to the usefulness of algorithm animation in algorithm courses.

The anomalies analysed are the January effect, the weekend effect, the size effect, the value effect, and the dividend yield effect. The empirical analysis uses a number of MSAR with a different number of regimes and lag orders. The results from the investigation of the January effect show the non-existence of the January effect and the value effect on the JSE during the periods 2002 – 2013 and 2004 – 2013, respectively. However, the weekend effect was found significant in the Mid Cap and the Small Cap index, and the size effect was also found significant during the same period 2002 - 2013. Finally the results from a Granger causality test concluded that there is a relationship between the returns on the Dividend Plus index and the ALSI, effectively proving the existence of the dividend yield effect on the JSE between 2006 and 2013. The impact of real exchange rate on exports in South Africa

It would seem imperative for the South African Government and the private sector to pay close attention to studies of this nature that indicate the importance of certain factors on the motivation of employees. In essence this study could assist Government and the private sector in understanding the importance of different factors that influence motivation of employees and the profitability of organisations. Should organisations re-align their focus on motivation of employees by taking cognisance of the elements addressed in this study, it could have a positive effect on the productivity of individual firms as well as on national productivity. The purpose of this study was to establish which motivational factors have an effect on the motivation of employees that would affect their individual, the organisational performance and customer satisfaction. The study aimed at firstly identifying motivational factors that has an influence on organisational performance. Secondly, investigating the effect of employee performance on organisational performance and thirdly investigating the impact of employee performance on customer satisfaction. The primary objective of this study was to establish which motivational factors have an effect on the motivation of employees thus affecting their individual and organisational performance and customer satisfaction. The relationship between work motivation, performance and productivity is complex. Although work motivation seems to have a significant impact on performance and productivity, it is certainly not the only influencing factor (Fisher, Katz, Miller & Thatcher 2003:82). Research has indicated that besides motivation, productivity is influenced by a variety of factors which could include the employee’s ability, skills, training, and availability of resources, management practices and economic conditions. In the light of the above, this study endeavoured to establish which dominant motivational factors have an influence on employee, corporate performance and customer satisfaction. Different motivational factors including hygiene factors, such as attitude, job satisfaction, rewards, leadership styles and communication were discussed as well as their influence on employee and organisational performance Information was gathered through secondary research. The investigation also included an exploration of different research methodologies, methods of data collection and analysis for this specific study. The main empirical research findings indicated that there is a positive relationship between motivator factors and employee performance as well as between management communication and employee performance. It is recommended that a policy and control manual should be compiled and distributed to new employees as part of their induction programme. The policies should be updated annually to incorporate changes in the organisation and to indicate to employees that management is serious about creating positive relationships between employees and employers. There is also a positive relationship between employee performance and organisational performance. It is recommended that organisations implement employee performance management systems that link to organisational performance goals in order to be able to critically access the performance of the employee in relation to the broader goals and results of an organisation. The relationship between motivational factors and customer satisfaction should however be investigated further. There seems to be different views in the literature on whether customer satisfaction surveys (or other measurements) should be used to support this relationship.

The economic contribution of trout fly-fishing to the economy of the rhodes region

- Description: Approximately 24 alien fish species, equivalent to 9 percent of all South African freshwater fish species, were introduced and established into South African waters during the 19th and 20th Centuries (Skelton, 2001). Of the 24 species introduced, the Rainbow trout and the Brown trout have over time become South Africa's most widely spread and used freshwater fish species (Bainbridge, Alletson, Davies, Lax and Mills, 2005). The National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act, no.10 of 2004 has, however, cast considerable doubt on the future of trout as a food source and a recreational fishing resource in South Africa. More specifically, Section 64 of the Act has the following aims: “(a) to prevent the unauthorized introduction and spread of alien species and invasive species to ecosystems and habitats where they do not naturally occur; (b) to manage and control alien species and invasive species to prevent or minimize harm to the environment and to biodiversity in particular; and (c) to eradicate alien species and invasive species from ecosystems and habitats where they may harm such ecosystems or habitats.” The uncertainty surrounding the future of trout in South Africa is mainly underpinned by aim (c) of Section 64 of the Act. Regarding the eradication of trout and in keeping with aim (c) of Section 64 of the Act, three remarks can be made. First, there exists a paucity of published studies which offer validated proof of the impacts which may be ascribed entirely to the introduction of alien trout in South Africa, since no pre-stocking assessments were conducted (Bainbridge et al., 2005). Second, the elimination of trout is feasible in a few limited closed ecosystems, such as small dams, but is highly impractical and untenable from an environmental and cost perspective where open and established river systems are concerned (Bainbridge et al., x 2005). More specifically, there are no efficient or adequate eradication measures which may be used in wide-ranging open ecosystems, which selectively target alien fish species. Moreover, most, if not all, measures have the potential to cause considerable adverse impacts on indigenous aquafaunal species. Finally, the elimination of trout could undermine the tourism appeal of many upper catchment areas in South Africa. The trout fishing industry is well established and is a source of local and foreign income, as well as a job creator in the South African economy (Bainbridge et al., 2005; Hlatswako, 2000; Rogerson, 2002). In particular, the industry provides a two-tier service: first, in food production at the subsistence as well as commercial levels, and second, as an angling resource. Recreational angling, including fly-fishing for trout, is one of the fastest growing tourism attractions in South Africa. Furthermore, the trout fishing industry is sustained and underpinned by a considerable infrastructure consisting of tackle manufacturers and retailers, tourist operators, professional guides, hotels, lodges and B&Bs. The economic case for the trout fishing industry in South Africa has, however, not been convincingly made. The economic benefit provided by trout and trout fly-fishing is priced directly in the market place by expenditures made by fly-fishers, and indirectly in property values, which provide access to fly-fishing opportunities. The benefit of trout and trout fly-fishing can also be valued through non-market valuation techniques. Non-market valuation is used to calculate values for items that are not traded in markets, such as environmental services. There are several non-market valuation methods available to the researcher, namely those based on revealed preference and those based on stated preference. The former includes the hedonic pricing method and the travel cost method, while the latter includes the contingent valuation method and the choice modelling method. Of the available non-market valuation techniques, the travel cost method is the most suitable method for determining the value of trout and the trout fishing industry because travel cost is often the main expenditure incurred. xi The aim of this study is threefold: first, to value the economic contribution of trout and trout fly-fishing to the Rhodes region, North Eastern Cape; second, to determine the willingness-to-pay for a project that entails the rehabilitation and maintenance of trout streams and rivers in and around Rhodes village so as to increase their trout carrying capacity by 10 percent; third, to determine the willingness-to-pay for a project aimed at eradicating trout from streams and rivers in and around Rhodes village so as to prevent trout from harming the indigenous yellowfish habitat. The first aim was achieved by applying the travel cost method, whereas the second and third aims were achieved by applying the contingent valuation method. The study aimed to provide policy makers with information regarding the value of trout fishing in the Rhodes region, so as to create an awareness of the economic trade-offs associated with alien fish eradication. Through the application of the travel cost method, the consumer surplus per trout fly-fishermen was estimated to be R19 677.69, while the total consumer surplus was estimated to be R13 774 384.40. The median willingness-to-pay for a project to rehabilitate trout habitat was estimated to be R248.95, while the total willingness-to-pay amounted to R199 462.20. The median willingness-to-pay for a project to eradicate alien trout from the Rhodes region rivers and streams was estimated to be R41.18, while the total willingness-to-pay amounted to R28 829.36. This study concludes that trout and trout fly-fishing make a valuable economic contribution to the Rhodes region. The extent of the economic benefit provided by trout and trout fly-fishing services in the Rhodes region should be carefully considered in any stream management project.

Valuing preferences for freshwater inflows into selected Western and Southern Cape estuaries

- Description: An estuary is the last stage of a river. It is where the river meets the sea. Estuaries are one of the most significant features of the South African coastline. In recent years, South Africa has witnessed an increase in the demand for freshwater for both industrial and domestic purposes. At the same time, there has been a gradual deterioration of river systems and their catchments. To add to this, there has been a gradual reduction in the amount of recorded rainfall, which is the primary source of freshwater for rivers. This has resulted in decreased freshwater inflow into estuaries, a situation which poses a serious threat to the biological functioning of these estuaries and the services rendered to its recreational users. A deterioration of estuary services reduces the yield for subsistence households and their appeal for recration. This study uses the contingent valuation method as its primary methodology to elicit users' willingness-to-pay to reduce the negative impacts of reduced freshwater inflow into selected western and southern Cape estuaries. Eight estuaries were selected for this study; the Breede, Duiwenhoks, Great Berg, Kleinemond West, Mhlathuze, Swartvlei and Olifants estuaries. The contingent valuation (CV) method is widely used for studies of this nature because of its ability to capture active, passive and non-use values. The CV method involves directly asking people how much they would be willing to pay for specific environmental services. In this case, users were asked what they would be willing to pay to sustain freshwater inflows into selected estuaries in order to prevent the negative impacts of reduced inflows. The travel cost method (TCM) was uesed to generate an alternative comparative set of values for the purposes of convergence testing. This is because convergence testing is highly desirable as a validity test for CV estimates.

- Description: An estuary is the last stage of a river. It is where the river meets the sea. Estuaries are one of the most significant features of the South African coastline. In recent years, South Africa has witnessed an increase in the demand for freshwater for both industrial and domestic purposes. At the same time, there has been a gradual deterioration of river systems and their catchments. To add to this, there has been a gradual reduction in the amount of recorded rainfall, which is the primary source of freshwater for rivers. This has resulted in decreased freshwater inflow into estuaries, a situation which poses a serious threat to the biological functioning of these estuaries and the services rendered to its recreational users. A deterioration of estuary services reduces the yield for subsistence households and their appeal for recration. This study uses the contingent valuation method as its primary methodology to elicit users' willingness-to-pay to reduce the negative impacts of reduced freshwater inflow into selected western and southern Cape estuaries. Eight estuaries were selected for this study; the Breede, Duiwenhoks, Great Berg, Kleinemond West, Mhlathuze, Swartvlei and Olifants estuaries. The latter implies that economic freedom does not have a significant impact on foreign direct investment in the CEMAC. However, the study revealed that economic freedom Granger-causes foreign direct investment but foreign direct investment does not Granger-cause economic freedom. This means that economic freedom precedes foreign direct investments, and foreign direct investments do not precede economic freedom. The study strongly recommends an improvement of institutions in the CEMAC in order to enjoy greater levels of economic freedom and therefore foster economic growth and domestic investment in the region.

Choosing the incorrect supplier could have dire consequences for the retailer’s performance, as suppliers are generally considered an extension of the retailer. Organisations base their operational expertise on the key performance objectives of cost, service, quality, speed, dependability and flexibility, which becomes the basis of their selection criteria when evaluating suppliers. The primary objective of this study was to develop a framework that guides retailers in their supplier selection process with the ultimate goal of formulating strategies to improve Nelson Mandela Bay’s (NMB’s) retail performance. In support of the primary objective, it was necessary to identify the current supplier selection criteria used in the NMB retail industry and the challenges that retailers face when selecting suppliers. The study set out to assess the effects of utilising established supplier selection criteria on retailers’ performance, as well as to identify strategies that retailers should employ to improve their performance. A quantitative research approach was utilised to collect data from a sample of 248 retailers and procurement and logistics managers. The empirical findings of the study identified flexibility, timeous delivery and reliability as the most important supplier selection criteria identified by retailers in NMB. The findings also revealed that utilising established supplier selection criteria has a significantly positive effect on retailers’ performance. Lack of collaboration between suppliers and retailers, lack of transparency between suppliers and retailers and suppliers’ limited knowledge of the criteria by which they are judged were identified as the most significant challenges facing retailers in NMB. The empirical findings also identified an increase in a retailer’s competitive advantage and revenue as the benefits of utilising supplier selection criteria to improve a retailer’s performance. The conclusions and implications of the empirical findings are provided and recommendations made. The study advances a framework to assist in guiding the retailers and procurement and logistics managers, retail researchers and policy makers when selecting suppliers. The study suggests that retailers should identify the most important supplier selection criteria, inform potential suppliers of the importance v of those criteria, select suppliers based on those criteria and utilise those criteria to evaluate the suppliers’ performance.

The restructuring of Higher Education Institutions in the Eastern Cape Province is manifested by inter alia the incorporation of the Port Elizabeth branch of the Vista University into the University of Port Elizabeth as a first phase and, as the final phase, the merger between the University of Port Elizabeth and the Port Elizabeth Technikon. A new, comprehensive university, the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), emerged from this merger on 1 January 2005. The previous institutions each had its own unique brand identity, brand image and brand name. With reference to the newly established NMMU, the question can be raised whether the brand identity of this newly established institution impacts on its perceived brand image among all stakeholders who have an interest in the institution. Given the merger background, the purpose of this research project is twofold: firstly, to analyse the impact of independent variables (‘reputation’, ‘relevance’, ‘personality’, ‘performance’ and ‘relationship’) on brand identity (moderating variable) and the impact of brand identity on brand image (dependent variable); and secondly, to gauge the perceptions of NMMU stakeholders of the brand image of the University in terms of both expectations and actual experiences. In order to give effect to the above, a conceptual model on brand identity and brand image based on secondary sources on branding, was empirically tested. Given the purpose and nature of the research in question, a positivistic research paradigm was adopted. By means of a Likert seven-point scale, primary data was sourced from 1 092 respondents, who shared their perceptions on the expectations and actual experiences of using the NMMU brand. The statistical analysis of the data comprised six phases. Initially, the data was subjected to an exploratory factor analysis to assess the discriminant validity of (xvi) the research instrument. This was followed by an assessment of the reliability of the research instrument through an internal consistency measure (Cronbach alpha reliability coefficients). The items that remained were included in the multiple regression model to assess the impact of brand identity variables on brand identity. The next phase comprised a regression analysis of the impact of brand identity on brand image. Fifthly, to assess any differences between stakeholders’ expectations and actual experiences when using the NMMU brand, pair-wise t-tests were performed. Finally, to gauge the level of satisfaction of NMMU stakeholders when using the brand, a “gap” analysis was conducted by converting the mean scores into relative percentage ratings. The empirical findings did not fully support the conceptual model. The testing of the conceptual model revealed that the independent variable ‘relevance’ did not demonstrate sufficient discriminant validity and, as a result, no evidence of construct validity. This variable therefore had to be removed from the conceptual model before it was subjected to further empirical assessment by means of the multiple linear regression analysis. Based on this finding on ‘relevance’, NMMU marketing communication strategists could perform an in-depth investigation on the positioning of the brand. Further, it was found that the dependent variable ‘brand image’ was not a uni-dimensional construct as suggested in the conceptual model. Ideally, images (in this case, brand images of the NMMU) should feed into strategic vision, serving as a mirror in which a university can reflect on its true standing. This implies that instead of using stakeholder images as exact assessments of brand performance compared with strategic vision, images held by stakeholders of who the university is and what it stands for (e.g. personality and relevance comparisons) should become part of the strategic envisioning process. The linkage between strategic intent and brand image should be evident. The results of the pair-wise t-tests revealed that significant statistical differences (xvii) existed between stakeholders’ perceptions of the expected and actual experiences when using the NMMU brand. To assess the magnitude of a possible ‘gap’ between stakeholders’ expectations and actual experiences of the NMMU brand, mean score differences were converted into relative percentage ratings. The most significant findings on actual experiences (on which the level of satisfaction is based) of the NMMU brand are as follows: All relative rating scores were below 92.05%. These relative satisfaction percentages imply that respondents were not satisfied with the NMMU brand, because their expectations were not fully met. The highest rating percentage (92.05%) was obtained in respect of the statement regarding “The NMMU slogan (‘for tomorrow’) reflects the NMMU brand identity”. The lowest rating percentage (78.33%) was given to the statement “The NMMU brand exceeds expectations in terms of promises”. The second lowest rating percentage (79.67%) was found for the statement “The NMMU brand delivers on promises”. The principal recommendations emanating from this study are summarised in three groups of recommendations, namely: Recommendations pertaining to the strategic implications of the findings for the NMMU marketing communication strategists. Government size, labour productivity and economic growth in South Africa

- Description: This study investigates short-run and long-run effects of fiscal consolidation on labour productivity in South Africa using the autoregressive distributed lag bounds testing approach of cointegration. We use quarterly data collected in the period of 1994Q3 to 2017Q1. We disaggregate government expenditure as well as revenue and find a positive and significant long run relationship between revenue variables and labour productivity. This relationship is also positive and significant in the short run except for net tax variable, which seems to be growth contractive. The results further suggest a positive and significant long run relationship between government expenditure on health, public safety and order, culture and recreation as well as education and labour productivity. Government expenditure on education and health variables are also positive and significant in the short run, whilst expenditure on defense is negative and not significant both in the short run and long run.

- Description: This study investigates short-run and long-run effects of fiscal consolidation on labour productivity in South Africa using the autoregressive distributed lag bounds testing approach of cointegration. We use quarterly data collected in the period of 1994Q3 to 2017Q1. We disaggregate government expenditure as well as revenue and find a positive and significant long run relationship between revenue variables and labour productivity. This relationship is also positive and significant in the short run except for net tax variable, which seems to be growth contractive. The results further suggest a positive and significant long run relationship between government expenditure on health, public safety and order, culture and recreation as well as education and labour productivity. Government expenditure on education and health variables are also positive and significant in the short run, whilst expenditure on defense is negative and not significant both in the short run and long run.

Businesses, as a form of strategic engagement, extend their appreciation and recognition to these key role players with rewards (or incentives) such as prizes, holidays and free goods and/or services. This treatise examines the taxation implications of such rewards and determines that the market value thereof should be taxed in the hands of their recipients. This study also investigates possible indicators (or points of reference) to establish such market value and suggests alternate values that may be ascribed thereto for inclusion in the recipient’s gross income. Where the rewards are passed onwards by the recipient to its employees, fringe benefit consequences are occasioned and this study observes that the market value thereof should be taxed in the employees’ hands. The study goes on further to consider the position of the supplier (or provider) of the rewards and finds that the supplier is entitled to a deduction of the cost of the rewards it has provided to its clients or customers. This study also reflects upon the penal implications of not including the market value of rewards in gross income and notes that such non-inclusion constitutes a fiscal loss and is subject to an understatement penalty. Key recommendations on how such omission may be addressed by the tax authorities are also presented.

- Description: Since the global financial crisis of 2008, attracting investment in a public company has not been a simple task (Krzus, 2011). Public trust in organisations was lost as a result of the crisis, owing to the lingering economic uncertainties that prevailed (Krzus, 2011). Through the full disclosure of all aspects that affect the operations of an entity, investors will be assisted in making an informed decision prior to making an investment in a publicly traded company (Singh, Wei, & Kaur, 2012). Integrated reporting provides investors with the necessary details, by making full disclosure of all aspects that affect the operations of an entity, including both financial and non-financial information, in a single report. Such information will enable investors to make a more informed assessment of the future prospects of the organisation in which they intend to invest (Singh et al., 2012). The purpose of this research effort, therefore, was to determine the relevance of integrated reporting to professional investors when making investment decisions, focusing specifically on JSE-listed construction companies. Grounded theory was used as a research design method. Grounded theory summarises data collected from empirical sources into categories. The data collected were based on the subjective perceptions of the participants in response to investigative interview questions. The researcher focused on a single context, namely an investment made by professional investors in JSE-listed construction companies within the Durban metropolitan in KZN. Non-probability, purposive sampling was used as the findings were not generalised to the entire population but were limited to the opinions and perceptions of professional investors in the Durban metropolitan area. The research effort resulted in valuable insight into how integrated reporting can be a useful decision-making tool for professional investors when undertaking investment in listed construction companies, in an attempt to attract investment in the sector. The researcher experienced a lack of responses from professional investors within the industry who were contacted for interviews. This lack of response could be considered to be a limitation in validating the outcome of the study. “Investors and integrated reporting” was identified as a theme that is material to the current state and potential future development of integrated reporting. Accordingly, this theme was used as a basis for this research effort that will enhance companies’ awareness of the benefits of compiling integrated reports as a tool to attract investors. This will assist in obtaining finance that can be used to develop and grow organisations.

- Description: Taking cognisance of the increasingly important role that copreneurial businesses play in national economies, the unique challenges that they face, and the lack of research attention given to such spousal teams, the purpose of this study was to contribute to the more effective functioning of copreneurships in South Africa by identifying the factors that impact on their success. Consequently, the primary objective of this study was to investigate the factors that influence the Perceived success of copreneurships in South Africa, as well as the conditions required for the effective and harmonious functioning of such spousal partnerships. This study seeks to incorporate previous findings and studies on team effectiveness and spousal relationships into a comprehensive conceptual model. After conducting a comprehensive literature study, as well as examining the different teamwork models proposed and the study by Farrington (2009), it became clear that successful teams have validated their proficiency with regard to two types of factors, namely, relational-based and organisational-based factors. Within these two categories of factors, 14 independent variables were identified and hypothesised to influence the measures of effectiveness of copreneurships, namely the dependent variable Perceived success; and the intervening variable Financial performance. All of the factors in this study were clearly defined and operationalised. Reliable and valid items sourced from Farrington’s (2009) measuring instrument, as well as several measuring instruments used in other studies, were used in the operationalisation of these factors. In addition, several items were self-generated from secondary sources. Respondents were identified using the convenience snowball sampling technique, and a structured questionnaire was made available to them. The data gathered from the 380 usable questionnaires was subjected to various statistical analyses. The validity and reliability of the measuring instrument was confirmed by means of an exploratory factor analysis, and Cronbach-alpha coefficients were calculated for this purpose. The original intervening variable Financial performance could not be confirmed as originally intended in the conceptual model. Instead, Financial performance split into v two separate variables which were named Financial performance and Growth performance. The original dependent variable Perceived success was confirmed by the factor analyses. The relational- and organisational-based factors could not be confirmed as originally intended in the conceptual model. Instead, seven new relational- and seven new organisational-based factors emerged, and where necessary these factors were renamed. The primary statistical procedure used to test the significance of the relationships hypothesised between the independent and dependent variables in this study, was Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). Owing to the sample-size restrictions, the conceptual model could not be subjected to SEM as a whole. Instead, seven submodels were identified and subjected to further analysis. The following independent variables were identified as influencing the dependent and intervening variables in this study: • Spousal relationship • Commitment to spouse • Equal status • Commitment to the business • Emotional attachment • Non-family involvement • Personal needs alignment • Leadership • Competencies • Internal context In order to investigate the influence of the various demographic variables on the intervening and dependent variables, an Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Multiple Linear Regression analysis and t-tests were performed. How leadership occurs in a copreneurial business, the tenure of the business, the location of the business, the status of the copreneurship, the level of spousal involvement in the business and the vi number of employees were found to have an influence on the intervening and dependent variables of this study. By empirically investigating copreneurships, this study has added to the limited amount of family business literature on these complex partnerships. By way of the conceptual models developed in this study a significant contribution has been made towards understanding the factors influencing the success of copreneurships. As a result, this study presents recommendations and suggestions to assist couples in managing their copreneurships in such a way as to nurture their marriage relationships and at the same time enhance the performance of their businesses.

Designing a proxemic natural user interface to support information sharing among co-located mobile devices

Due to constant advancements in mobile computing, mobile devices are able to provide new, more intuitive, and easier solutions to sharing information. Natural User Interfaces (NUIs) primarily focus on the reuse of existing knowledge (from other applications or activities) or human abilities (such as touch, speech, and gestures) to provide a more accurate and usable solution to existing human computer interaction (HCI) systems. The interaction techniques of NUIs have transformed these human abilities. The main research objective was to design a proxemic NUI to provide an accurate and usable solution to support information sharing among co-located mobile devices. The development of MotionShare supported multiple devices to share information simultaneously using NUI interaction techniques. An initial calibration setup allowed MotionShare to calculate the approximate positions and orientations of every device in the environment. Novel NUI interaction techniques were implemented because of the known positions of these devices. MotionShare was evaluated using two evaluation techniques, namely analytical and experimental. The results showed device positioning to have a mean precision, trueness, and recall of 72.21%, 91.39%, and 71.63% respectively. The results showed MotionShare gestures to have a recall of 90.50% and 100.00% for the point gesture and the touch gesture respectively. The experimental technique consisted of a pilot study (formative evaluation) and a usability evaluation (summative evaluation). The results of the usability evaluation showed high user satisfaction and statistical analysis, which revealed MotionShare to achieve the main research objective. These results also showed that participants preferred the touch gesture to the point gesture, but expressed both gestures can be utilised for the tasks of MotionShare.

- Description: With English as the medium of academic exchange, Chinese students are the largest single overseas student group in the English speaking countries (2010). Relative to the outbound education market of other countries, the Chinese education market is large, and it is currently receiving much attention globally. Not only is South Africa one of countries where English is spoken, it has relatively speaking, low study fees and easily-accessed visas compared with countries in Europe and the United States. Therefore, South African universities have a virtually unlimited potential for receiving Chinese students. For South African education providers, particularly NMMU as the host university for the research in question, in order to render the expected education quality and to cater for the Chinese education market effectively, it is of utmost importance that the institutions have a clear understanding of Chinese students’ expectations as well as their actual academic experiences (in the broadest context) when studying at this university. The above is closely linked to the expected educational quality, the actual educational delivery as experienced by Chinese students, as well as the levels of satisfaction they experience as students at NMMU. The purpose of this research project is twofold. Firstly, it aims to construct a theoretical model showing the variables and relationships pertaining to expected and actual educational delivery as experienced by Chinese students. Having assessed the perceptions of the respondents based on the findings, another purpose is to design appropriate educational marketing strategies suitable to address the academic needs and expectations of Chinese students in the broadest context. By designing appropriate education strategies, the potential to develop the Chinese education market in South Africa will be enhanced. Given the purpose and nature of the research in question, methodological triangulation strategies were used. A Likert seven-point scale research instrument was developed and administered. Due to the limited number of respondents (n=61), the Likert scale instrument was further subjected to enrich the data by means of face-to-face interviews with 61 Chinese students (respondents), who shared their perceptions on the expectations and actual experiences of NMMU academic programme quality encounters. By following the methodological triangulation strategies, the validity of the findings is enhanced. The phenomenological dimension of the research was conducted according to guidelines as documented in secondary sources. The findings of the matched pair t-tests indicated that significant statistical differences do exist between the ‘expectations’ and ‘actual experiences’ of Chinese students’ perceived academic programme quality. Sufficient evidence is available at the 95 percent level of significance to support the hypothesis H1, namely: “There are differences between Chinese students’ ‘expected’ and ‘perceived’ academic programme quality (actual experience) of NMMU”. Besides the matched pair t-tests, further statistical analyses were performed by means of calculating Cohen’s ‘d’ values and relative percentage ratings to assess the magnitude of the “gap” between expectations and actual experiences of Chinese students studying at NMMU. The findings revealed that the Chinese students were not completely satisfied with their actual experiences when studying at NMMU. The above statistical findings were endorsed by the qualitative findings. Three sets of conclusions and recommendations were identified for this research. Firstly, conclusions emanating from secondary sources on service quality and students’ satisfaction literature were provided, such that students satisfaction is seen more as a psychological state which reveals an overall feeling of the students’ purchase and consumption experience. Secondly, the conclusions linked to the empirical findings revealed significant statistical differences between the expectations and perceptions (actual experiences) of Chinese students’ perceived academic programme quality. Finally, recommendations on relevant NMMU educational marketing objectives/ strategies can be grouped into four domains: - To build a customer-led education business which adheres to the principles of true marketing orientation with the focus on Chinese students. To achieve this objective a high level of understanding of Chinese students’ specific needs and wants when studying at NMMU is of utmost importance. The effective marketing positioning of NMMU can render leverage benefits to themselves and their clientele. - Findings from the biographic data analyses are significant to the positioning strategies and market segmentation strategies of NMMU. - The decision on a proper positioning strategy entails the choice of target market segments, which will determine where and how the education business competes and its choice of differential advantages. - The South African education providers should have appropriate educational brands to entice the Chinese students’ support.

Having assessed the perceptions of the respondents based on the findings, another purpose is to design appropriate educational marketing strategies suitable to address the academic needs and expectations of Chinese students in the broadest context. By designing appropriate education strategies, the potential to develop the Chinese education market in South Africa will be enhanced. Given the purpose and nature of the research in question, methodological triangulation strategies were used. A Likert seven-point scale research instrument was developed and administered. Due to the limited number of respondents (n=61), the Likert scale instrument was further subjected to enrich the data by means of face-to-face interviews with 61 Chinese students (respondents), who shared their perceptions on the expectations and actual experiences of NMMU academic programme quality encounters. By following the methodological triangulation strategies, the validity of the findings is enhanced. The phenomenological dimension of the research was conducted according to guidelines as documented in secondary sources. The findings of the matched pair t-tests indicated that significant statistical differences do exist between the ‘expectations’ and ‘actual experiences’ of Chinese students’ perceived academic programme quality. Sufficient evidence is available at the 95 percent level of significance to support the hypothesis H1, namely: “There are differences between Chinese students’ ‘expected’ and ‘perceived’ academic programme quality (actual experience) of NMMU”. Besides the matched pair t-tests, further statistical analyses were performed by means of calculating Cohen’s ‘d’ values and relative percentage ratings to assess the magnitude of the “gap” between expectations and actual experiences of Chinese students studying at NMMU. The findings revealed that the Chinese students were not completely satisfied with their actual experiences when studying at NMMU. The above statistical findings were endorsed by the qualitative findings. Three sets of conclusions and recommendations were identified for this research. Firstly, conclusions emanating from secondary sources on service quality and students’ satisfaction literature were provided, such that students satisfaction is seen more as a psychological state which reveals an overall feeling of the students’ purchase and consumption experience. Secondly, the conclusions linked to the empirical findings revealed significant statistical differences between the expectations and perceptions (actual experiences) of Chinese students’ perceived academic programme quality. Finally, recommendations on relevant NMMU educational marketing objectives/ strategies can be grouped into four domains: - To build a customer-led education business which adheres to the principles of true marketing orientation with the focus on Chinese students. To achieve this objective a high level of understanding of Chinese students’ specific needs and wants when studying at NMMU is of utmost importance. The effective marketing positioning of NMMU can render leverage benefits to themselves and their clientele. - Findings from the biographic data analyses are significant to the positioning strategies and market segmentation strategies of NMMU. - The decision on a proper positioning strategy entails the choice of target market segments, which will determine where and how the education business competes and its choice of differential advantages. - The South African education providers should have appropriate educational brands to entice the Chinese students’ support.

It also recognised that the 'calling of shots' by the most senior executive is a critical marker of effective management‘ and that control of a company is irrelevant in determining effective management‘. To determine who effectively manages‘ a company each situation would have to be analysed on its own as it is not possible to create a definitive rule on the concept. The effect of the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on surrounding house prices: a hedonic analysis

- Description: Sports facilities increasingly feature amongst the most expensive development projects world-wide. One such facility includes world-class stadia. Such facilities tend to commit a considerably large amount of a country's public funds to the project. This public expenditure on new stadia, and the required public taxation, may be economically justified if the benefits from the new stadia outweigh the costs. 15 May 2004 saw South Africa winning the bid to host the FIFA 2010 Soccer World Cup tournament. This mega-event was played in 10 stadia across nine chosen host cities. Five of these stadia were newly constructed, while the other five needed upgrading. Both South Africa's national government and local governments of host cities bore the expenses of the new stadia construction and the upgrading to the existing stadia. This amounted to a total public expenditure of R13.5295 billion on the stadia alone. The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on the banks of the North End Lake in Port Elizabeth was amongst the five newly constructed stadia costing R1.7 billion. Many international studies have been conducted to assess the impact of new stadia on the economies of host cities. One particular aspect which has received a lot of attention as far as empirical research is concerned is the impact of stadia on residential property prices (Carlino & Couslon, 2004; Davies, 2005; Tu, 2005; Coates & Humphreys, 2006; Ahlfeldt & Maennig, 2007, 2010; Dehring, Depken & Ward, 2007; Feng & Humphreys, 2008, 2012; Kavetsos, 2010; Ahlfeldt, Maennig & Scholz, 2010; Kiel, Matheson & Sullivan, 2010; Ahlfeldt & Kavetsos, 2011; Coates & Matheson, 2011). The majority of the studies conducted have indicated that the presence of a new stadium in an area has a significantly positive effect on surrounding house values that decays with distance from the facility. As no study has yet been done in South Africa to investigate the impact of the announcement of the construction of new stadia on nearby residential property values, this study examines, by means of the hedonic pricing model, the effect of the announcement to construct the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on the banks of North End Lake on adjacent residential property values. The study period for this study was 2004 - 2006. This time period captured the stadium announcement effect. The residential properties in North End that were traded at least once during the period 2004 to 2006 made up the target population. According to the South African Property Transfer Guide (SAPTG), a total of 417 property transactions (excluding repeat sales) took place over the study period (2004 - 2006). The 417 transactions were deemed to be the size of the target population and a list of 100 property transactions were used as the sampling frame. As the study period was from 2004 - 2006, it was necessary to adjust the market prices to constant 2006 prices. For this purpose, data from the Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage section of the ABSA house price indices were used so as to eliminate any inflationary effects on the property values over the study period. The results of the study revealed that the stadium has a statistically significant positive effect on adjacent residential properties situated within a 1 200 metres radius from the stadium. The average owner of a residential property in North End would be willing-to-pay between R10 7898 and R11 704.6 to be situated 435 metres closer to the stadium.

In Nigeria, the development is evident in the delivery of the health care services. This indicates that the private health institutions deliver quality health care service by using efficient and quality medical equipment. However, there is a growing awareness among clients to perform an extensive search before the purchase of health care service and the increased expectation from health care quality by clients and their family. The change in consumer behaviour has caused a shift in the consumer decision-making process due to the availability of several sources of information and various health institutions they can choose from. The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors that influence the consumer decision-making process that can enhance customer satisfaction and reduce cognitive dissonance. In this study the behaviour of consumers is related to how they make decisions along several stages before they make a purchase and in a health care setting the decision-making process refers to the process that clients pass through in making choices on alternative health institutions. The quantitative research method was adopted in this study in describing, analysing and interpreting data. A structured questionnaire was employed to collect primary data from 450 respondents in Lagos state, Nigeria. The primary data was statistically analysed using five stages, namely, exploratory factor analysis, Cronbach‟s alpha reliability testing, descriptive statistics, multiple regression analysis, and Pearson correlation analysis. The empirical results of this study indicates that service encounter experience, personal income and support sources are significantly related to the decision-making process. The decision-making process also has significant positive relationship with both customer satisfaction and cognitive dissonance. This indicates that influential factors that have been identified through the empirical results enlighten researchers and the private health institutions on issues that influence the clients‟ decisions to utilise private health institutions. The well-being and satisfaction of clients will be enhanced if the private health institutions can craft effective strategies that will enable clients to gain easy access and utilise health care services. This study emphasised that access to and utilisation of health care services in the private health institutions can be granted to clients through personal income and support sources from family members and private health institutions. Futhermore, health insurance coverage is an effective way that will help clients overcome the financial constraints and restricted access to and utilisation of private health institutions. The study further reveals that the well-being and satisfaction of clients will be enhanced if private health institutions improve access to quality health care. Failure to improve the overall quality and performances of the health care services in the private health institutions can lead to clients‟ cognitive dissonance. Both private and public health institutions should play a major role in providing the necessary facilities that can assist the clients in their decision-making process regarding their health care needs. This will enable the health care institutions‟ staff to understand what clients value and need and, therefore, how well to satisfy them and reduce cognitive dissonance. Easy access and utilisation of the private health institutions as well as satisfaction in quality health care delivery will create better health outcomes for the workforce and citizens of a country and this will improve economic development.
