Industry professionals consider inconsistent project management practices to be a major cause of these failures. A leading contributor to these inconsistent project management practices is that there is no one project management standard followed in the industry, thereby resulting in different interpretations and applications by project managers. Given the intricate nature of construction projects, correct project management practices and project management maturity are paramount in achieving the overall envisaged project benefits,project success and business profit by organisations. As such, this study arose from the desire to improve the prevailing practices in construction projects, particularly in the Private Healthcare Industry. Against this background, the purpose of this study was to develop a framework that aims to improve the prevailing project management practices in infrastructure projects within the Private Healthcare Industry. This was done through evaluating the appropriate frameworks and theories in construction project management practices, project management maturity, and project success concepts. This then led to determining the correct construction project management practices required for the successful execution of infrastructure projects. To achieve this goal, a comprehensive review of literature was conducted that covered a review of project management practices, benefits, and theories The review of literature concluded with the main study proposition: Project management maturity has an influence on project success.

Impact of fracking fluid on Karoo plants based on field and greenhouse experiments

In forest vegetation the fracking fluid caused ground vegetation to be extensively damaged with high mortality rates and trees showing premature leaf loss following application. A study by Martin (2017) investigated these effects on Karoo vegetation in a greenhouse and found it to increase stress and reduced the growth with some life forms being identified as sensitive. The current study followed on the work of Martin testing additional species in the same greenhouse and applying different treatments of fracking fluid to Karoo vegetation in their habitat. The plants were monitored by measuring their height, photosynthetic efficiency (stress), biomass allocation and the temperature of the sites. The greenhouse plants had increased growth associated with repeated fracking fluid treatments while having variable stress levels with different treatments of the fracking fluid. The farm had mixed results being generally more stressed due to the treatments, the repeated fracking fluid treatments showed greater growth. The farm vegetation was more sensitive due to prolonged drought which is suspected to play a large role in the different response to fracking fluid between the two sites. The several hypotheses based on the finding of Martin (2017) were not supported by the data in this study. However, the application of fracking fluid did affect the tree species as they were found to be sensitive, while the other plant species was generally stressed after the applications. The greenhouse study cannot accurately represent the effects of fracking fluid on the farm vegetation, due to the large difference in the environment thus, more field studies would need to be conducted to determine the effects of fracking fluid.

It is an important piece of research for both the process of social enterprise development in Slovenia, as well as to provide ideas and thoughts as to the way forward in this sector for other developing societies. The goal is to provide a clearer conceptualisation from which other social entrepreneurs can use as the basis to analyse, plan and improve social enterprise in their own specific contexts. The primary purpose of the study is thus to unpack the core elements that identify social enterprise in Slovenia using the resource-based view. The research aims to understand social enterprise within Slovenia in relation to where it occurs, which are the main industries concerned, and what are the unique resources used to promote sustainable growth. To achieve this, the research was guided by the resource-based view for social enterprise as highlighted by Day and Jean-Denis (2016) as well as that proposed by Bacq and Eddleston (2018). A mind map for a possible route towards improved implementation and understanding of social enterprise in Slovenia, was done through accessing registered social enterprises. This database was from the Ministry of Economic Development in Slovenia. An analysis of 2591 social enterprise, a desktop review of the Slovenian legislation on social enterprise and the unpacking of unique resources available to Slovenian social enterprise was done. This provided a perfect test case to show how the provision of legislation, supportive structures; financial targets, a regional vision and government mentoring social enterprise enhance a contested terrain in Slovenia. Findings highlighted that there have been sustainable successes, but not at the levels expected. It is clear that the government has created various unique resources to build and develop the social enterprise (SE) sector. From an RBV analysis of the social enterprise environment in Slovenia, it is essential to have resources such as legislation, mind-set, in migration (labour) and youth skills be created, monitored and supported. However, there is a need for improved monitoring and tighter implementation of the legislation for social enterprise to provide the solution to destructive social ills.

Symmetry and asymmetry in electrocatalysis: enhancing the electrocatalytic activity of phthalocyanines through synergy with doped graphene quantum dots

- Description: An exploration on the enhancement of the electrocatalytic activity of phthalocyanines (Pcs) through coupling with a series of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) is undertaken. The preliminary studies using symmetrical Pcs, a cobalt and an iron chloride tetra substituted diethylaminophenoxy Pc (complexes 1 and 2), for the electro-oxidation of nitrite revealed through the various sequential modifications that doped GQDs fare better than their pristine counterparts with respect to improving the electrocatalytic behaviour of Pcs, in particular, the nitrogen-doped GQDs (NGQDs). Following up on this, a series of asymmetric Pc complexes; 2,9,16-tris-(4-tert-butylphenoxy) mono carboxyphenoxy phthalocyanato cobalt (II) (3), 2,9,16-tris-(4-tert-butylphenoxy) mono aminophenoxy phthalocyanato cobalt (II) (4), 2,9,16-tris-(3-diethylamino)phenoxy) mono carboxyphenoxy phthalocyanato cobalt (II) (5) and 2,9,16-tris-(3-diethylamino)phenoxy) mono aminophenoxy phthalocyanato cobalt (II) (6) was prepared in which push-pull systems were compared to other asymmetric complexes that lack this effect towards the electrocatalytic sensing of hydrazine. All asymmetric complexes (3-6) were π-stacked to the NGQDs while those with an NH2 group (4 and 6), were also covalently linked to the NGQDs. These complexes and their corresponding conjugates were characterized accordingly and applied as electrocatalysts in the oxidation of hydrazine. The electrochemical studies revealed that π π stacking yields better responses (higher sensitivities and lower limits of detection) than covalent linking because there are less forces acting on the graphene network. Covalent linking introduces both tensile and compressive forces which in turn results in an increase in the ID/IG ratio and that is unfavourable for electrocatalysis. In comparing the electrodes composed of the π-stacked conjugates to those altered through sequential modifications, despite the conditions not being the same, it can be inferred that the magnitude of the electrostatic forces between the Pcs and the GQDs also plays a significant role in electrocatalysis. The π-stacked conjugates, owing to the manner in which they were prepared, have stronger electrostatic forces acting between the Pc and GQDs hence they were able to elicit a better electrochemical response than the sequentially modified electrodes. In addition to that, it appears that asymmetric Pcs are better electrocatalysts in comparison to the symmetric Pcs.

Rethinking minimum sentence Legislation

- Description: The harsh mandatory minimum sentences, introduced by the Criminal Law Amendment Act 105 of 1997, seemed like a good idea to politicians, as a means of countering the escalating crime rate experienced when South Africa transitioned to its new democracy, and to appease the public that something is being done about the issue. The plan was that everyone who committed the same crime would receive the same guaranteed sentence. Judges and Magistrates can only deviate from the predetermined sentences if they are satisfied that substantial and compelling circumstances exist, which would justify the imposition of a lesser sentence, limiting their flexibility. By doing so sentences would always be fair, politicians could be seen to be tough on crime and everyone would be satisfied. Unfortunately, this is not how minimum sentencing legislation turned out to be, as research has shown that it is not a deterrent for crime in South Africa or anywhere else. Instead of achieving consistency in sentencing, it worsens inconsistencies and disparities. With minimum sentencing legislation, the sentence for drug trafficking and murder is the same. Instinctively, human beings want to be safe and secure, but to lock up non-violent people for years will not make people feel safer. Due to the increased number of people serving life sentences and because non-violent offences are incorporated in the minimum sentencing legislation, our prison population has increased rapidly. Minimum sentencing legislation has several negative consequences, at a huge cost to South Africans, of which overcrowding of prisons is the most significant. Courts were tolerant with the poor language of the minimum sentencing legislation, as it was only supposed to be a temporary emergency measure against the high escalating violent crime experienced in South Africa post-1994. Since this Legislation became permanent in 2007, it is considerably different from the one considered in S v Dodo and a constitutional challenge is justifiable. With reference to the above, this research will reveal that minimum sentencing legislation did not deliver the desired results South Africa was hoping for and it is a vii major contributor to South Africa’s social retrograde. The rethinking of minimum sentencing legislation becomes imperative, bearing in mind that South Africa has previously researched sentencing alternatives at its disposal.

Towards a capability maturity model for a cyber range

- Description: This work describes research undertaken towards the development of a Capability Maturity Model (CMM) for Cyber Ranges (CRs) focused on cyber security. Global cyber security needs are on the rise, and the need for attribution within the cyber domain is of particular concern. This has prompted major efforts to enhance cyber capabilities within organisations to increase their total cyber resilience posture. These efforts include, but are not limited to, the testing of computational devices, networks, and applications, and cyber skills training focused on prevention, detection and cyber attack response. A cyber range allows for the testing of the computational environment. By developing cyber events within a confined virtual or sand-boxed cyber environment, a cyber range can prepare the next generation of cyber security specialists to handle a variety of potential cyber attacks. Cyber ranges have different purposes, each designed to fulfil a different computational testing and cyber training goal; consequently, cyber ranges can vary greatly in the level of variety, capability, maturity and complexity. As cyber ranges proliferate and become more and more valued as tools for cyber security, a method to classify or rate them becomes essential. Yet while a universal criteria for measuring cyber ranges in terms of their capability maturity levels becomes more critical, there are currently very limited resources for researchers aiming to perform this kind of work. For this reason, this work proposes and describes a CMM, designed to give organisations the ability to benchmark the capability maturity of a given cyber range. This research adopted a synthesised approach to the development of a CMM, grounded in prior research and focused on the production of a conceptual model that provides a useful level of abstraction. In order to achieve this goal, the core capability elements of a cyber range are defined with their relative importance, allowing for the development of a proposed classification cyber range levels. An analysis of data gathered during the course of an expert review, together with other research, further supported the development of the conceptual model. In the context of cyber range capability, classification will include the ability of the cyber range to perform its functions optimally with different core capability elements, focusing on the Measurement of Capability (MoC) with its elements, namely effect, performance and threat ability. Cyber range maturity can evolve over time and can be defined through the Measurement of Maturity (MoM) with its elements, namely people, processes, technology. The combination of these measurements utilising the CMM for a CR determines the capability maturity level of a CR. The primary outcome of this research is the proposed level-based CMM framework for a cyber range, developed using adopted and synthesised CMMs, the analysis of an expert review, and the mapping of the results.

In the context of cyber range capability, classification will include the ability of the cyber range to perform its functions optimally with different core capability elements, focusing on the Measurement of Capability (MoC) with its elements, namely effect, performance and threat ability. Cyber range maturity can evolve over time and can be defined through the Measurement of Maturity (MoM) with its elements, namely people, processes, technology. The combination of these measurements utilising the CMM for a CR determines the capability maturity level of a CR. The primary outcome of this research is the proposed level-based CMM framework for a cyber range, developed using adopted and synthesised CMMs, the analysis of an expert review, and the mapping of the results.

The purpose of this research was to investigate the use of a novel method, Chernoff Faces, to assess and compare the social media brand images of six insurance companies in South Africa based on social conversation measurement. The intention of research was towards observing existing situations at hand and pointing out the game changers that can provide the industry with a new leap. Social media are multidimensional and understanding them requires tracking different measures simultaneously. Integrating social media into a communication strategy leads to a problem in finding the best way to portray and communicate multivariate data. It is essential to find the best way to represent and transmit the data so that marketing executives can quickly and easily monitor changes in brand images. Previous studies have successfully proved the possibility of using this method to gauge a "snapshot in time." This study took the concept further by closely monitoring the results for a set of brands over a period to account for the dynamic nature of social media. Accordingly, the study was a longitudinal study of 30 days. Data on the insurance companies was collected from Social Mention, a social media search and analysis platform that aggregates user-generated content into a single stream of information. A tool in the statistical software Stata, Chernoff's faces, was used to analyse the results by generating facial expressions to the metrics associated with the social mentions of each of the insurance companies. The resulting facial expressions were then analysed to recognise the more favourable and stable brands and those that need appropriate risk management. Managing Social Media is challenging as managers must always keep it as positive as possible. The low income market segment of e-commerce customers has been found to be apprehensive of e-commerce due to trust concerns over card-mandating payment solutions, living a large unbanked market in developing economies excluded from the e-commerce experience due to a lack of inclusive electronic payment systems. Mobile payment systems offer a source of distinctive value for both merchants and consumers, thereby increasing the e-commerce market. Due to their high level of adoption, mobile payments are capable of providing a mode for reaching new market segments and opening opportunities to bring value propositions to segments that had been unreachable in the past. This study sought to uncover the perception of consumers in an emerging economy about the use of mobile payments as a mode of remittance in e-commerce transactions. This was done by describing the factors that influence the intention to use mobile payments on internet stores. The study also investigated the effect of demographic profile on intention and use in the South African context. An online questionnaire was developed and distributed to a convenience sample of retail consumers on social media platforms, and the collected data was analysed using the SPSS statistical package. The results confirmed that compatibility, personal innovativeness, perceived trust, perceived regulatory support, and promotional benefit have a direct influence to intention to use mobile payments as a mode of remittance for e-commerce transactions. Furthermore, social influence does not have a direct influence on intention to use mobile payments in the South African context. The results also revealed that, in South Africa, the largest population group, male and female gender groups do not differ in their opinion around mobile payments. The study findings illustrate the importance of context when considering technology innovation introduction to a new market. Despite social influence not being found to be a factor for intention to use mobile payments in the South African context, the same conclusion should not be generalised as it is contextual. Recommendations and conclusions were drawn from the discussion of the findings of this research.

- Description: With the prevalence of digitalisation in the medical industry, e-health systems have largely replaced the traditional paper-based recording methods. At the centre of these e-health systems are Electronic Health Records (EHRs) and Electronic Medical Records (EMRs), whose benefits significantly improve physician workflows. However, provision for user interface designs (UIDs) of these systems have been so poor that they have severely hindered physician usability, disrupted their workflows and risked patient safety. UID and usability guidelines have been provided, but have been very high level and general, mostly suitable for EHRs (which are used in general practices and hospitals). These guidelines have thus been ineffective in applicability for EMRs, which are typically used in niche medical environments. Within the niche field of Optometry, physicians experience disrupted workflows as a result of poor EMR UID and usability, of which EMR guidelines to improve these challenges are scarce. Hence, the need for this research arose, aiming to create UID guidelines for EMRs in Optometry, which will help improve the usability of the optometrists’ EMR. The main research question was successfully answered to produce the set of UID Guidelines for EMRs in Optometry, which includes guidelines built upon from literature and made contextually relevant, as well as some new additions, which are more patient focused. Design Science Research (DSR) was chosen as a suitable approach, and the phased Design Science Research Process Model (DSRPM) was used to guide this research. A literature review was conducted, including EHR and EMR, usability, UIDs, Optometry, related fields, and studies previously conducted to provide guidelines, frameworks and models. The review also included studying usability problems reported on the systems and the methods to overcome them. Task Analysis (TA) was used to observe and understand the optometrists’ workflows and their interactions with their EMRs during patient appointments, also identifying EMR problem areas. To address these problems, Focus Groups (FGs) were used to brainstorm solutions in the form of EMR UID features that optometrists’ required to improve their usability. From the literature review, TAs and FGs, proposed guidelines were created. The created guidelines informed the UID of an EMR prototype, which was successfully demonstrated to optometrists during Usability Testing sessions for the evaluation. Surveys were also used for the evaluation. The results proved the guidelines were successful, and were usable, effective, efficient and of good quality. A revised, final set of guidelines was then presented. Future researchers and designers may benefit from the contributions made from this research, which are both theoretical and practical.

The study pronounces the legislative provisions of the Employment Act and Labour Disputes (Arbitration and Settlement) Act that exist for the effective and efficient resolution of labour disputes through an alternative dispute resolution (ADR) system. The study contends for the provision of a proactive and expeditious dispute resolution system that helps to resolve labour disputes in the most effective and efficient manner, without necessarily having to resort to the courts. The dissertation further examines the provisions of relevant international labour standards on labour dispute resolution to ascertain their adequacy as part frameworks that apply to Uganda’s obligation to provide ADR systems that respond to the needs of the labour relations community. The study contends that ratifying particular ILO conventions creates obligations upon a country to comply and apply provisions of these conventions in national legislation. It is further argued that by having ratified those international labour standards that provide for ADR, Uganda assumes specific obligations under international law, enjoining the country to provide the required ADR system of conciliation and arbitration, which is reliable and trusted by the countries citizens. A case study of South Africa is adopted with the primary focus on whether Uganda can learn from South African’s ADR system which is arguably more effective and efficient. South Africa has a labour dispute resolution system that has influenced majority of the Southern African Development Community (SADAC) law, hence prompting this study to borrow its ADR system predominantly the Commission for Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA). Despite the differences between Uganda and South Africa, the study also indicates fundamental similarities. Preferably, disputes should be resolved at conciliation level, resulting in the minority of disputes being referred to arbitration or the Industrial Court. This is far from the reality of the situation in Uganda. The study acknowledges that the Labour Disputes (Arbitration and Settlement) Act and Employment Act have put up provisions to establish a fast and effective labour dispute system, however, the gap exists at implementing these effective provisions in the Labour Disputes (Arbitration and Settlement) Act and the Employment Act. These lacunae in implementation make the attainment of an effective and efficient labour dispute resolution difficult. For this reason, the author proposes several remedial interventions in line with international labour standards and lessons from South Africa’s system that look to the future and the continued provision of fast, effective, and user-friendly ADR services. For Uganda to solve successfully apply these remedies, a strong political will as well as concerted efforts from all role players in the labour relations community is required.

The problems associated with construction, such as poor quality and slow productivity, labour shortages, occupational health and safety, and inferior working conditions, have opened the possibility of more revolutionary solutions within the industry. One such solution espoused as having tremendous potential to improve construction productivity whilst alleviating the problems associated with construction is Construction Automation and Robotics. Automation and robotics technologies encompass a wide range of innovative technologies using technologically advanced machinery to improve the speed and efficiency of a given process. The aim of this study is to analyse the extent of utility of construction automation and robotics in the South African construction industry. The research adopted the quantitative methodology and online survey to collect data. A detailed quantitative (statistical) data analysis was performed, using web-based software “QuestionPro,” including data analysis for investigating possible relationships between variables. Through this study it has been established that one of the prospective solutions to the problems associated with construction is in the implementation and utility of innovative technologies in construction such as automation and robotics. Moreover, the research found that automation and robotics in South Africa is at an interesting point whereby organisations are taking strides in accepting and implementing the technologies. It is envisaged that the utility of construction automation and robotics would improve the industry in terms of productivity, health and safety and quality.

One such solution espoused as having tremendous potential to improve construction productivity whilst alleviating the problems associated with construction is Construction Automation and Robotics. Automation and robotics technologies encompass a wide range of innovative technologies using technologically advanced machinery to improve the speed and efficiency of a given process. The aim of this study is to analyse the extent of utility of construction automation and robotics in the South African construction industry. The research adopted the quantitative methodology and online survey to collect data. A detailed quantitative (statistical) data analysis was performed, using web-based software “QuestionPro,” including data analysis for investigating possible relationships between variables. Through this study it has been established that one of the prospective solutions to the problems associated with construction is in the implementation and utility of innovative technologies in construction such as automation and robotics. Moreover, the research found that automation and robotics in South Africa is at an interesting point whereby organisations are taking strides in accepting and implementing the technologies. It is envisaged that the utility of construction automation and robotics would improve the industry in terms of productivity, health and safety and quality.

As an attempt to address this challenge, the new South African National Curriculum Policy Statement (CAPS) encourages Science teachers to use culturally responsive pedagogies through integrating local or indigenous knowledge (IK) in Science lessons to make it accessible and relevant to learners. But, it does not explicitly state how Science teachers should go about enacting this. It is against this caveat that this study aimed at finding out indigenous practices and knowledge in the community and from two community members that could be integrated into the topic on waves and sound in Grade 10 Physical Sciences lessons with the view to establishing its influence (or not) on learners’ conceptions and dispositions towards Science. The study was conducted at Buyelembo Combined School (pseudonym), a township school in the Sarah Baartman District, in the Eastern Cape in South Africa. The research participants were 18 Grade 10 Physical Sciences learners, two Physical Sciences teachers and two community members. Data were generated using the learners’ group activity, discussions and presentations, observations (participatory observations and lesson observations), stimulated recall interviews and reflections. A thematic and inductive-deductive approach to data analysis was employed to come up with sub-themes and themes. Underpinned by an interpretivist perspective and informed by Vygotsky’s socio-cultural theory, a qualitative case study approach was adopted. Additionally, Ogunniyi’s Contiguity Argumentative Theory (CAT) was used as an analytical framework. The five cognitive states of CAT were employed to analyse data during the social interactions to surface any contradictions. The findings from this study revealed that there are indigenous practices and knowledge in relation to the sea that can be integrated into the topic on waves and sound in Grade 10 Physical Sciences lessons. However, regarding relevance of those indigenous practices and knowledge to science, the study revealed that the learners found no relevance at all but discussions and argumentation were enhanced. In addition, findings from this study revealed that the learners’ conceptions, dispositions, and sense-making in science were influenced positively through using hands-on practical activities when teaching Science concepts. Lastly, the study revealed that the use of mother tongue by the community members, learners and the teachers together with the language of learning and teaching promoted learner talk. Based on the findings of this study, I recommend that there is a need to support teachers on how to integrate indigenous practices and knowledge in their teaching, particularly when teaching Physical Sciences.

- Description: This thesis utilises an interdisciplinary approach to understand the political significance of the experimental poetics used by Claudia Rankine in Citizen: An American Lyric and Koleka Putuma in Collective Amnesia. Rankine and Putuma offer contemporary reflections on what it means to occupy marginalised spaces in society. These artists experiment with formal and conventional aspects of literature to explore and create new definitions of what it means to be Black in society. Their works and techniques allow for thinking outside of dominant ideologies of race and posit alternative Black identities that are not found within canonical theory on Blackness. This project reflects on existing theories of Black subjectivity as evident in Frantz Fanon’s Black Skin, White Masks and Aimé Césaire’s Notebook on the Return to My Native Land. While these theorists did not reject the role of Black women in Western civilisation, they should be read as a moment in a series of counter-discourse to the Black Other rather than the finite canon of Black subjectivity. The emergence of Rankine and Putuma’s experimental poetics works to disrupt the conflation of the Black subject with the Black heteronormative male. Using Michelle M. Wright’s Physics of Blackness as its primary theoretical framework, this project advocates alternative and disruptive readings of Blackness that potentially shift Blackness away from its conflation with nationalism, masculinity and heteronormativity. This thesis uses a dialogical approach between political theory and literature which allows for Citizen and Collective Amnesia to be read as acts of resistance to epistemological erasure and as articulations of the politics relevant to the poets’ lived experiences. Both the United States and South Africa have a history of institutionalised racial segregation, which allows Rankine and Putuma to be read in relation to one another. Where the Civil Rights movement and the anti-apartheid struggle were both foregrounded as male-lead liberation movements contemporary social movements including #blacklivesmatter and #feesmustfall have initiated a return to the androcentric philosophies of Malcom X and Steve Biko, for example. As such Rankine and Putuma’s literature and art marks a reclamation of female empowerment and visibility in the face of a political rhetoric that continues to be masculine and nationalist in nature. In the absence of a space where Black female and queer bodies are adequately recognised, the poetry they write creates a space of self-representation and recognition.

A critical investigation of leadership in a Technical, Vocational Education and Training college in the Eastern Cape

- Description: Far-reaching reforms of the TVET college system – including a merger and frequent revisioning of the colleges’ role in the educational landscape of South Africa – have focused renewed attention on this sector. The fact that the sector has been plagued by poor performance – even to the extent that several colleges have been placed under administration – suggests problems at the level of leadership. This study sought to explore key role-players’ understanding of the leadership and management challenges faced by a TVET college and, by examining responses to these challenges, develop a sense of what leadership means in the sector. The study drew on three leadership theories – distributed leadership, transactional leadership as depicted in political models of management, and critical leadership – to help make sense of the findings. A qualitative case study design was used to explore key respondents’ views and lived experiences. The respondents were the principal, two deputy principals, a council member, three campus managers and a programme head. Interviews, questionnaires and document analysis were the chief data collection tools. The study found that critical leadership was the dominant approach at the college. This was revealed in the college leadership’s awareness of broader societal needs and its own role in operating in a socially just manner. College leadership also revealed signs of rejecting the status quo and opposing state control and bureaucracy, in favour of reactionary initiatives. There was limited evidence of distributed and transactional leadership. In fact, ‘leadership’ as such, seemed not to be part of the college discourse, suggesting that the concept and habit of leadership was not broadly discussed, shared and promoted. This sense was strengthened by the fact that at the time of the study, the college was headed by a charismatic and visionary leader. Indeed, the problem at the college seemed to be the Department of Higher Education and Training, which has failed the college in a number of ways.

- Description: The Zambezi area in north-western Zambia is underlain by Neoproterozoic Katanga Supergroup and older, Archean to Mesoproterozoic Basement Supergroup rocks. The area lies within the Domes Region, which is a structural domain of the Lufilian Arc. The stratigraphic succession within Zambezi area is dominated by the Grand Conglomerate Formation (GC) and Mwashia Group which are the most extensive units, and the less abundant Lower and Upper Roan Groups of the Katanga Supergroup. They wrap around the domal Basement Supergroup units. The mineral assemblage of the Mwashia and the GC schists commonly contains garnet, anthophyllite and biotite. GC rocks show remnants of primary structures such as clasts and sedimentary features. Anthophyllite, garnet and biotite are the dominant Mg-Fe rich metamorphic minerals. However, these are iron rich for each mineral phase and has been attributed to iron rich protoliths. The earliest recognised deformation episode (D1) formed NE-SW S1 foliations within GC which is consistent with the regional structural trend in the western Lufilian Arc. S1 was later affected by D2 that generated downward facing F2 folds and S2 foliations. The other associated feature to D2 is garnet that grew as the result of pro-grade metamorphism. The D3 deformation fabric is not developed and did not affect much of the structural geometry of the Zambezi area. The peak assemblages of the Basement Supergroup and the Katanga Supergroup formed at mid-amphibolite facies conditions of 590 °C and 630 °C at an average pressure of 4.0 kbar. The Basement Supergroup has undergone retrograde metamorphism to greenschist facies condition indicated by presence of chlorite and also determined by biotite-anorthite isopleth in THERIAK DOMINO. At the eastern part of Zambezi area, the Katanga Supergroup rocks were retrogressed in the upper greenschist facies at about ~470°C and ~4.0 kbar due to isobaric cooling.

- Description: In this thesis we analysed Westerbork observations of the Perseus Galaxy Cluster at 1380 MHz. Observations consist of two different pointings, covering a total of ∼ 0.5 square degrees, one including the known mini halo and the source 3C 84, the other centred on the source 3C 83.1 B. We obtained images with 83 μJy beam⁻¹ and 240 μJy beam⁻¹ noise rms for the two pointings respectively. We achieved a 60000 : 1 dynamic range in the image containing the bright 3C 84 source. We imaged the mini halo surrounding 3C 84 at high sensitivity, measuring its diameter to be ∼140 kpc and its power 4 x 10²⁴ W Hz⁻¹. Its morphology agrees quite well with that observed at 240 MHz (e.g. Gendron-Marsolais et al., 2017). We measured the flux density of 3C 84 to be 20.5 ± 0.4 Jy at the 2007 epoch, consistent with a factor of ∼2 increase since the 1960s.

Development of graphene materials and phthalocyanines for application in dye-sensitized solar cells

- Description: Two sets of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) were fabricated. In the first set, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC) were fabricated by incorporating graphene materials as catalysts at the counter electrode. Platinum was also used as a catalyst for comparative purposes. Different phthalocyanines: hydroxyl indium tetracarboxyphenoxy phthalocyanine (1), chloro indium octacarboxy phthalocyanine (2) and dibenzoic acid silicon phthalocyanine (3) were used as dyes. Complex 3 gave the highest power conversion efficiency (η) of 3.19% when using nitrogen doped reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (NrGONS) as a catalyst at the counter electrode, and TiO2 containing rGONS at the anode. The value obtained is close to 3.8% obtained when using Pt catalyst instead of NrGONS at the cathode, thus confirming that NrGONS is a promising candidate to replace the more expensive Pt. The study also shows that placing rGONS on both the anode and cathode improves efficiency. In the second set, DSSCs were fabricated by using 2(3,5-biscarboxyphenoxy), 9(10), 16(17), 23(24)-tri(tertbutyl) phthalocyaninato Cu (4) and Zn (5) complexes as dyes on the ITO-TiO2 photoanodes containing reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (rGONS) or nitrogen-doped rGONS (NrGONS). The evaluation of the assembled DSSCs revealed that using ITO-TiO2-NrGONS-CuPc (4) photoanode had the highest fill factor (FF) and power conversion efficiency (ɳ) of 69 % and 4.36 % respectively. These results show that the asymmetrical phthalocyanine complexes (4) and (5) showed significant improvement on the performance of the DSSC compared to previous work on symmetrical carboxylated phthalocyanines with ɳ = 3.19%.
