- Description: The central Namaqua Metamorphic Complex can be characterised by long-standing high-temperature (up to granulite/amphibolite facies) conditions between _ 1300 and 1100Ma, inevitably resulting in widespread metamorphism and plutonism. Hosted within a NW–SE striking antiformal structure about 40 km east of Onseepkans, Northen Cape, South Africa, in the Swartoup Hills, lies the Swartoup Pluton. The Swartoup Pluton was sampled and described in hand specimen and thin section. The study area was photographed, with all data presented in this study. The various rock types are readily discerned in the field due to their characteristic weathering colours and overall fabrics. The Swartoup granodioritic body is hosted within metasediments of the Bysteek and Koenap Formations, of the Arribees Group. The package was later intruded by another later granitoid, the Polisiehoek Granite-gneiss. The Bysteek Formation, a wall rock to the S-type Swartoup Pluton, reacted at the contact with the igneous body resulting in localised feldspathic granites and granodiorites with prominent, often euhedral, garnet, pryoxene and titanite. The Swartoup Pluton is divided into two subgroups. The first is characterised by higher P2O5 contents, _ 0.3 – 0.4 wt.%, shown with a narrower constraint on its Rb contents, _ 80 – 160 ppm, than the second, with _ 0.14 – 0.4 wt.% P2O5 and 20 – 310 ppm Rb. Meanwhile the Polisiehoek Granite-gneiss shows _ 50 – 420 ppm Rb and _ 0.04 – 0:1 wt% P2O5. As a whole, the Swartoup Pluton is characterised by somewhat elevated CaO concentrations (_ 1.5 – 6.0 wt.%), relative to calculated averages of granites (1.8 wt.% CaO, Le Maitre, 1976) and granodiorites (3.9 wt.% CaO, Le Maitre, 1976). Whilst most of the Swartoup specimens were classified as granodiorites, some orthopyroxene-bearing monzodiorite and orthopyroxenebearing monzonite were locally found and sampled. However, much of the body appears to be granodioritic to granitic in composition. The Polisiehoek Granite-gneiss is characterised by its orange-brown weathering colour in the field, sheared texture, lower P2O5 and higher total alkali content than the Swartoup Pluton. The Polisiehoek Granite-gneiss is a highly fractionated S-type granite, as shown by plots of (a) (Na2O + K2O)/CaO and (b) FeOT/MgO versus Zr + Nb + Ce + Y (Whalen et al., 1987; Zhang et al., 2019) and also of (c) (Al2O3 + CaO)/(FeOT + Na2O + K2O) versus 100 × (MgO + FeOT + TiO2)/SiO2 (after Sylvester, 1989). - Description: Increasingly, Zimbabweans are migrating from their country for both economic and political reasons, with South Africa being the primary destination. In seeking employment in South Africa, Zimbabweans face numerous initial problems, including the high unemployment rate in the country alongside restrictions on their employment in the formal economy. In this context, Zimbabweans often turn to work in the informal economy, including as informal traders. This thesis seeks to understand the lives and livelihoods of Zimbabwean informal traders in Makhanda in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Drawing upon the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach, and in the light of existing literature on Zimbabweans more broadly in South Africa, the thesis examines the livelihoods of a purposeful sampled grouping of six informal traders from Zimbabwe in Makhanda. It discusses their reasons for leaving Zimbabwe, their journey from Zimbabwe to Makhanda, relationships amongst themselves and their ongoing relationships with family back home, as well as their hopes and plans for the future. It also examines more specifically their livelihood activities, the daily challenges they face in pursuing their livelihoods and concerns about their livelihood status in South Africa. The ANC has many of the characteristics of a mass party. In mass parties, mass participation is supposed to be promoted through the activities of party branches. This thesis documents the weakening of the ANC’s local level structures and their political control over the organization’s decisions. ANC branches are investigated as democratic vanguards of ANC’s mass party persona, in relation to their functioning as the most basic units of the organization. The thesis reflects on branch members’ experiences in different ANC branches to understand the interplay between branch politics, political power, and patronage politics within the ANC. This research project also explores the possibility of manipulation of ANC branches by senior leaders and would-be-leaders of the ANC. A medicinal chemistry study in nitrogen containing heterocycles

- Description: Heterocyclic structures have found extensive utility in the field of medicinal chemistry, as prominent regions of pharmacophores resulting in numerous drug treatments for many diseases. Accordingly, in this project we explored the respective antimalarial and anticancer activity exhibited by compounds featuring nitrogen containing indole and tetrazole heterocycles respectively. This thesis therefore comprises of two distinct parts. Part 1. Following the development of resistance towards traditional antimalarial therapy such as chloroquine and emerging resistance towards artemisinin combination therapies, the WHO reported the urgent need for new, effective drugs and identification of new drug targets to combat the Plasmodium falciparum parasite. In 2015 the parasite was the cause of 429 000 deaths, the majority occurring in the sub-Saharan region of Africa. This highlights the failing effectiveness of vector control strategies, reiterating the need to develop alternative control and treatment strategies. In response to this need we wanted to expand and further describe the SAR of the indole based series, indolyl-3-ethanone-α- thioethers, previously synthesized in our laboratory. These compounds were found to exhibit antimalarial activity with compounds 2.26 and 2.27 exhibiting activity against P. falciparum 3D7 in the nanomolar range. Based on these compounds we synthesized compounds 3.21 and 3.24 – 3.32 following a three step reaction pathway. Our results in this study, indicate that compound 3.28, a pnitrothiophenol analogue of 2.27 was the most active of the compounds we synthesized and furthermore was superior in activity against Plasmodium compared to 2.27. This result indicated that the presence of p-NO2 is important in enhancing anti-plasmodial activity. Comparing compounds 3.25 and 3.26 with an oxygen on the ether bridge to compounds 3.29 and 3.30 with a sulfur, we observed an increase in hydrophilicity coupled to a decrease in anti-plasmodial activity in the compounds, thus, highlighting the importance of sulfur for enhanced activity. Furthermore, we investigated bioisosteric replacement of the 5-chloro substituent present in hit compounds 2.27 and 3.28, with an electron withdrawing nitrile (3.27) and electron donating methyl (3.29) and methoxy (3.31) substituents. These substituents decreased anti-plasmodial activity, confirming that a chlorine substituent is optimal for biological activity. This study furthered our understanding of the SAR of indolyl-3-ethanone-α- thioethers for the development of potent anti-plasmodial lead compounds. Part 2. Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC), which disproportionately affects women of sub-Saharan Africa, is unresponsive to hormone-based therapies. This emergence presents a population of patients devoid of effective drug treatment, signaling the urgent need to develop new effective therapies with novel drug targets. Therefore, we identified our target in TNBC cells as the protein-protein interaction between the co-chaperones HOP and HSP90. We reasoned that a disruption of this interaction would ultimately result in cancer cell death via the degradation of essential oncogenic client proteins. Following a fragment screening campaign, which identified several acid and tetrazole containing hits (4.56 – 4.58) which bound to HOP, with low anticancer activity, we sought to develop synthetic methodology to elaborate our fragment hits synthesizing tetrazole containing fragments to target TNBC cell lines. We therefore proceeded to synthesize a range of multi substituted fragments (4.59 – 4.63), utilizing a nitrile (4.66) to access tetrazoles via 1,3-cycloaddition and an acid by nitrile hydrolysis. - Description: With South Africa's long history of colonialism and racial oppression, there are still services in the country that many South Africans cannot relate to, including psychology. Research shows that many South Africans experience and are affected by mental distress due to several factors, including poverty, unemployment, and traumatic experiences. Managing and treating such distress has always been challenging for most South Africans. Some debates question the relevance of psychological services from the West in a South African context. This study explores other approaches to psychology that look beyond the Biopsychosocial model when dealing with certain types of disorders in an African context. African psychology, or the Afrocentric approach, looks at what is beneath the surface, not just the presenting problem. Mainstream psychology strives to be universal and applicable to all. However, African psychology disagrees with this notion. African psychology perceives human beings as strongly influenced by social and cultural influences. The focus of this approach includes the spiritual realm and the attached meanings. There is evidence for the need to merge Traditional and Western medicine. The research methodology for this study is qualitative, using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. IPA allows for a critical engagement with the ways in which participants construct their reality. The researcher carried out semi-structured interviews to enable participants, all traditional healers (3 female and 2 male), to narrate their experiences dealing with mentally distressed clients. The accounts of these traditional healers were analysed focusing on people who have experienced mental distress. From the analysis and synthesis of the themes, findings illustrate how traditional healers conceptualise and construct mental distress from an African Psychology paradigm. An emerging core theme was the importance of the divine call and its influence on the chosen treatments. - Description: Globally, capital adequacy is one of the most central topics for both regulatory authorities and banks. It promotes stability and intends to reduce bank insolvency. It also represents the most important element of banks’ profitability (Profits are the first line of defense against losses from credit loss in a bank). After the collapse of Bretton Woods in 1973, many banks incurred large foreign currency losses, with Banks outside Germany having taken heavy losses on their unsettled trades with Herstatt Bank in Cologne, West Germany, when it collapsed in June 1974. This study empirically tests the relationship between changes in the capital adequacy ratio under Basel III and return on equity (ROE) of the Namibian banking sector and whether such relationships exist in the short run or long run. The study used panel quarterly data for a sample of three Namibian commercial banks from the year 1999 to 2019.It employed one panel unit root tests namely: Im, Pesaran and Shin W-stat (IPS). To test the existence of a long-run relationship (equilibrium) or effect between the dependent and independent variables, the study employed the Panel Co-integration methods using Pedroni and Kao (Engle-Granger based) tests. The study carried out the Hausman test to determine the best approach for analysis and determined the PMG approach to be the preferable model for analysis. Various diagnostic tests such as multicollinearity through the correlation analysis, autocorrelation, and heteroscedasticity and cross-sectional dependence tests were carried out to determine if the data set is well-modelled and if the results can be taken seriously. The study’s results under the PMG model showed that ROE and CAR have a positive significant relationship in the short run. A dummy variable to capture the connection between ROE and CAR before and after BASEL III shows that the relationship is positive and significant indicating that ROE increases more when there is capital regulation than when there is no capital regulation. The study also concluded that there is no long run relationship between CAR and ROE. - Description: The Southwest Indian Ocean (SWIO) islands of Mauritius and Seychelles are both highly dependent on tourism and fisheries for their economies. One of the growing ecotourism sectors is saltwater fly fishing, an industry based on catch-and-release fishing for a host of species, including bonefishes. Bonefishes (Albula spp.) have received significant research attention in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, with only sporadic research conducted in the Indian Ocean. My project aimed to investigate the genetic connectivity of the roundjaw bonefish (Albula glossodonta) in two island states (Seychelles and Mauritius) within the SWIO using a mitochondrial genetic marker (cyt-b) and next generation sequencing (ddRADseq). Samples collected were grouped based on their spatial distribution. The Seychelles consisted of four island groups (Inner Island Group, Aldabra Group, Amirantes and Alphonse Group, and Farquhar Group) whereas Mauritius was represented by one island group (Saint Brandon). Genetic analyses were undertaken between and within each of these groups. Mitochondrial cytochrome-b identified two species of bonefish: Albula glossodonta and Albula oligolepis; the latter was only genetically identified from the Inner Island Group. I hypothesise that this is due to habitat partitioning, with A. oligolepis being a deeper dwelling bonefish species compared to A. glossodonta, which occupies shallow water habitats such as sand flats, atoll lagoons and reef flats. Neutral SNP loci revealed a panmictic pattern of distribution for A. glossodonta throughout the Seychelles Island groups but showed a pattern of weak structure between Seychelles and Mauritius. Genetic diversity indices such as allelic richness, showed low diversity across the sampling sites (AR range: 1.761-1.889). Population structure tests such as pairwise FST showed low but significant population structure. The highest FST indices were recorded between the Aldabra and Farquhar Groups, as well as the Aldabra and Saint Brandon Groups (0.044 ± 0.000 and 0.040 ± 0.000, respectively). Descriptive tests such as PCA and DAPC showed similar trends, whereby Saint Brandon clustered separately from the other samples from the Seychelles Island groups. However, these trends were Abstract seen at very low variations (PCA axes 1 and 2 accounted for only 2.0 and 1.9 % of the total variation, respectively). A population assignment test grouped the individuals as one ancestral population. A spatial principal component analysis showed that Saint Brandon was dissimilar to the Seychelles Island groups. Like other Elopomorph species, bonefishes have leptocephalus larvae capable of long-distance dispersal which may explain the well-mixed genetic population observed within the Seychelles islands. Although currents within the Indian Ocean, especially on a mesoscale, are not well understood, the South Equatorial Current likely facilitates connectivity between the Seychelles islands while also limiting gene flow between Seychelles and Mauritius. Understanding population structure is important for informing the appropriate management and conservation strategies, especially in oceanic nations where data informing important industries like tourism and fisheries are often limited. The bonefish fly fishing industry is well-known to be a lucrative sector, generating, for example US$ 1.4 million a year in the Bahamas. This study recognised that there are numerous knowledge gaps relevant to the bonefish industry that need to be addressed, including: 1) understanding the socio-economic importance of fly fishing to island states like Seychelles, 2) estimating the abundance and species distribution of bonefishes within Seychelles, 3) understanding effectiveness of MPAs for recreational fishery species like bonefish and, lastly, 4) generating more fishery-relevant biological information on the heavily targeted fly fishing species within Seychelles. Thicket expansion in a vachellia karroo-dominated landscape and its effect on herbaceous communities

- Description: Grass and forb species found in savannas are highly diverse, contributing to the structure and function of the savanna system. Where mean annual rainfall is seasonal and high enough to support closed canopy vegetation such as forests or thickets, savannas can exist as an alternative stable state maintained by disturbances such as fire and browsing. Biotic and abiotic processes act on savanna and forest (or thicket) systems maintaining both their tree and herbaceous cover at levels that ensure their persistence in those states. Studies have shown that many semi-arid rangelands in South Africa have undergone a rapid increase in tree cover (of both native and non-native species) over the past several decades. This process of increasing tree cover in semi-arid savannas, termed bush encroachment, results in a biome shift, changing landscapes that were once grasslands with few trees to ones dominated by broad-leaved trees with fewer sun-adapted forbs and grasses. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of changing woody cover and its associated changes in tree composition, tree canopy structure, light dynamics in the understory and herbaceous community composition on Endwell farm in the Eastern Cape. Canopy cover changes between the years 1949 and 2019 were analysed at 51 sites on the farm and related to historical rainfall patterns. There had been a general increase in tree cover over the past several decades on the farm, and many sites showed a change from open (0-15%) in 1949 to low (1635%), moderate (36-50%) and high (51-100%) canopy cover in 2019. In earlier years most sites had a canopy cover below 50%, and the higher canopy cover values (>65%) occurred in more recent decades. Canopy cover of ~ 50% was found to be rare in each decade. This suggests that ~50% canopy cover maybe a transient, unstable state. The period with the highest rate of canopy cover increase was 2002-2013, and this increase coincided with a high mean annual rainfall 10 years prior to 2002 and a high mean annual rainfall in most years between the 20022013 period. The period between 2002 and 2013 also had the highest number of sites transitioning from lower to higher tree canopy cover classes, indicating that rainfall may have been a factor driving bush encroachment during the past several decades. An increase in canopy cover (a decrease in light transmittance) was accompanied by changes in woody species composition during thicket formation. The low canopy cover (high light transmittance) sites were dominated by Vachellia karroo and Scutia myrtina trees, while high tree cover sites had fewer V. karroo and S. myrtina trees and were rather characterised by an abundance of thicket tree species. Species proportion, NMDS and dendrogram plots indicated that sites with a light transmittance range between 50-100% had similar tree species compositions, different from sites with light transmittances <50%. An increase in tree density was strongly correlated to an increase in canopy cover (from 2019 satellite imagery), density of trees > 3m, maximum height reached by trees, diversity of trees, total canopy volume, total canopy area and leaf area index (LAI), and a decrease in light transmittance. A structural equation model (SEM) was used to explore the relationships between canopy characteristics (maximum canopy area, canopy volume, tree diversity, density of trees, density of trees >3m, individual trees and maximum canopy height), aerial canopy cover in 2019, and light transmittance. The model explained 73% of the variation in light transmittance, mostly via the direct effect of canopy characteristics. Canopy characteristics had a strong influence on both aerial cover in 2019 and directly on light transmittance, but canopy cover in 2019 had a weak influence on light transmittance. The herbaceous layer was rich and dominated by C4 grasses such as Eragrostis plana, Sporobolus fimbriatus, Themeda triandra and Digitaria eriantha) and forbs including Hibiscus aethiopicus, Helichrysum dregeanum, Helichrysum nudifolium and Gerbera viridifolia at low canopy cover sites with high light transmittance. In contrast, high tree cover sites had fewer herbaceous species in general. Grass and forb species characteristic of these sites high canopy cover sites were Panicum maximum, Loudetia flavida, Pellaea viridis and Cyperus spp. Different sites with low light transmittance (<50%) had similar herbaceous species composition. Basal cover, richness, abundance and diversity of herbaceous plants decreased significantly with an increase in tree density, density of trees >3 m, canopy volume, canopy area, canopy cover, LAI, and increased significantly with increasing light transmittance. Most grasses had their highest densities at LAI <0.5, which was estimated to correspond to ~75% light transmittance and ~38% canopy cover and then started to decline thereafter. Herbaceous species basal cover was also highest at LAI <0.5. An SEM model indicated that herbaceous diversity, basal cover and richness responded both to light availability and to the structure of the woody vegetation directly (R2 = 0.53). While the effect of light transmittance on herbaceous communities was strong (0.41), there was little difference between the effect of light transmittance and canopy characteristics (-0.35) on herbaceous communities. Two possible threshold points, relating to two types of transitions in vegetation structure, could be deduced from this study. The first threshold occurred at canopy cover ~ 40% (LAI < ~ 0.5, light transmittance ~ 75%), at which point many of the common herbaceous species, including the dominant C4 grasses, began to decline in abundance while the composition remained characteristic of the savanna state. A canopy cover of less than ~ 40% at a site provides a suitable state for a high abundance of grass and forb species which help maintain an open system by facilitating fires. The second threshold marked a compositional shift between savanna and closed-canopy vegetation states. Savanna species (trees, grasses and forbs) dominated at high light transmittances (>50%) and were significantly reduced at low light transmittances (< 50%), indicating a possible species composition threshold at ~50% light transmittance at which a savanna state switches to a thicket (LAI ~ 1 and canopy cover ~70%). This point indicated the point where there was a significant difference in both tree and herbaceous plant compositions, with a marked reduction in the occurrence of C4 grasses at light transmittance <50%. Fire is supressed when the C4 grass layer is lost, and further thicket encroachment will take place causing complete canopy closure. Land managers in this system should start becoming concerned about a reduction in grass biomass when canopy cover reaches about 40% and would have to reduce tree cover before the threshold of 50% light transmittance (70% canopy cover from aerial photos) is reached to maintain a savanna system. , Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, Botany, 2022

Thicket expansion in a vachellia karroo-dominated landscape and its effect on herbaceous communities

- Description: Grass and forb species found in savannas are highly diverse, contributing to the structure and function of the savanna system. Where mean annual rainfall is seasonal and high enough to support closed canopy vegetation such as forests or thickets, savannas can exist as an alternative stable state maintained by disturbances such as fire and browsing. Biotic and abiotic processes act on savanna and forest (or thicket) systems maintaining both their tree and herbaceous cover at levels that ensure their persistence in those states. Studies have shown that many semi-arid rangelands in South Africa have undergone a rapid increase in tree cover (of both native and non-native species) over the past several decades. This process of increasing tree cover in semi-arid savannas, termed bush encroachment, results in a biome shift, changing landscapes that were once grasslands with few trees to ones dominated by broad-leaved trees with fewer sun-adapted forbs and grasses. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of changing woody cover and its associated changes in tree composition, tree canopy structure, light dynamics in the understory and herbaceous community composition on Endwell farm in the Eastern Cape. Canopy cover changes between the years 1949 and 2019 were analysed at 51 sites on the farm and related to historical rainfall patterns. There had been a general increase in tree cover over the past several decades on the farm, and many sites showed a change from open (0-15%) in 1949 to low (1635%), moderate (36-50%) and high (51-100%) canopy cover in 2019. In earlier years most sites had a canopy cover below 50%, and the higher canopy cover values (>65%) occurred in more recent decades. Canopy cover of ~ 50% was found to be rare in each decade. This suggests that ~50% canopy cover maybe a transient, unstable state. The period with the highest rate of canopy cover increase was 2002-2013, and this increase coincided with a high mean annual rainfall 10 years prior to 2002 and a high mean annual rainfall in most years between the 20022013 period. The period between 2002 and 2013 also had the highest number of sites transitioning from lower to higher tree canopy cover classes, indicating that rainfall may have been a factor driving bush encroachment during the past several decades. An increase in canopy cover (a decrease in light transmittance) was accompanied by changes in woody species composition during thicket formation. The low canopy cover (high light transmittance) sites were dominated by Vachellia karroo and Scutia myrtina trees, while high tree cover sites had fewer V. karroo and S. myrtina trees and were rather characterised by an abundance of thicket tree species. Species proportion, NMDS and dendrogram plots indicated that sites with a light transmittance range between 50-100% had similar tree species compositions, different from sites with light transmittances <50%. An increase in tree density was strongly correlated to an increase in canopy cover (from 2019 satellite imagery), density of trees > 3m, maximum height reached by trees, diversity of trees, total canopy volume, total canopy area and leaf area index (LAI), and a decrease in light transmittance. A structural equation model (SEM) was used to explore the relationships between canopy characteristics (maximum canopy area, canopy volume, tree diversity, density of trees, density of trees >3m, individual trees and maximum canopy height), aerial canopy cover in 2019, and light transmittance. The model explained 73% of the variation in light transmittance, mostly via the direct effect of canopy characteristics. Canopy characteristics had a strong influence on both aerial cover in 2019 and directly on light transmittance, but canopy cover in 2019 had a weak influence on light transmittance. The herbaceous layer was rich and dominated by C4 grasses such as Eragrostis plana, Sporobolus fimbriatus, Themeda triandra and Digitaria eriantha) and forbs including Hibiscus aethiopicus, Helichrysum dregeanum, Helichrysum nudifolium and Gerbera viridifolia at low canopy cover sites with high light transmittance. In contrast, high tree cover sites had fewer herbaceous species in general. Grass and forb species characteristic of these sites high canopy cover sites were Panicum maximum, Loudetia flavida, Pellaea viridis and Cyperus spp. Different sites with low light transmittance (<50%) had similar herbaceous species composition. Basal cover, richness, abundance and diversity of herbaceous plants decreased significantly with an increase in tree density, density of trees >3 m, canopy volume, canopy area, canopy cover, LAI, and increased significantly with increasing light transmittance. Most grasses had their highest densities at LAI <0.5, which was estimated to correspond to ~75% light transmittance and ~38% canopy cover and then started to decline thereafter. Herbaceous species basal cover was also highest at LAI <0.5. An SEM model indicated that herbaceous diversity, basal cover and richness responded both to light availability and to the structure of the woody vegetation directly (R2 = 0.53). While the effect of light transmittance on herbaceous communities was strong (0.41), there was little difference between the effect of light transmittance and canopy characteristics (-0.35) on herbaceous communities. Two possible threshold points, relating to two types of transitions in vegetation structure, could be deduced from this study. The first threshold occurred at canopy cover ~ 40% (LAI < ~ 0.5, light transmittance ~ 75%), at which point many of the common herbaceous species, including the dominant C4 grasses, began to decline in abundance while the composition remained characteristic of the savanna state. A canopy cover of less than ~ 40% at a site provides a suitable state for a high abundance of grass and forb species which help maintain an open system by facilitating fires. The second threshold marked a compositional shift between savanna and closed-canopy vegetation states. Savanna species (trees, grasses and forbs) dominated at high light transmittances (>50%) and were significantly reduced at low light transmittances (< 50%), indicating a possible species composition threshold at ~50% light transmittance at which a savanna state switches to a thicket (LAI ~ 1 and canopy cover ~70%). This point indicated the point where there was a significant difference in both tree and herbaceous plant compositions, with a marked reduction in the occurrence of C4 grasses at light transmittance <50%. Fire is supressed when the C4 grass layer is lost, and further thicket encroachment will take place causing complete canopy closure. Land managers in this system should start becoming concerned about a reduction in grass biomass when canopy cover reaches about 40% and would have to reduce tree cover before the threshold of 50% light transmittance (70% canopy cover from aerial photos) is reached to maintain a savanna system. , Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, Botany, 2022

My initial assumption was there was a practice disconnect or mismatch between water management practices and the stated curriculum requirements at Fort Cox. To develop a deeper understanding and possible responses, the study adopted the Practice Architectures Theory (PAT) developed by Kemmis (2009) and Kemmis, McTaggart and Nixon (2013). A supportive theory was also considered in the form of the action learning process developed by Marquardt (2007), which was aimed at bringing people together in an attempt to respond to water management practice concerns in their context. Practice Architectures Theory was used with the view to understand the ‘sayings, doings, and relatings’ regarding water management and curriculum practices at Fort Cox, in particular around Irrigation, Soil and Water Conservation subjects and the other water dependent subjects. Kemmis et al. (2013) suggested that practices come into being because people do not act alone but as a collective, and bring them into being. In practice, individual understanding and action are orchestrated in collective social-relational projects. A qualitative case study approach was used to solicit data using different techniques namely workshops, semi-structured interviews, document analysis, observations and Unit-Based Sustainability Assessment Tool questionnaires. Data collected through all these techniques was triangulated in the form of analytical memoranda which helped to develop analytical statements aligned with the research goals. The findings confirmed the evident practice disconnect between water management and curriculum practices which was found to be problematic at Fort Cox. The findings also suggest that there were inadequate water management topics across the curriculum. The findings lead to recommendations including future research recommendations for possible implementation. - Description: The aim of the present research was to investigate whether, as claimed by the South African Revenue Service in the media release issued in April 2018, the normal income tax provisions could apply to cryptocurrency transactions. To achieve this aim, a literature review was undertaken to describe the nature of cryptocurrencies and related crypto mining activities, providing definitions of cryptocurrencies, blockchains and crypto mining, as well as describing the functioning of the system. The research then proceeded to analyse the provisions of the definition of “gross income” in section 1 of the Income Tax Act, 58 of 1962, as amended, and the requirements of the “general deduction formula” in terms of the preamble to section 11, section 11(a) and section 23(g), as applying to cryptocurrency transactions. The application of other provisions in the Act to cryptocurrency transactions was analysed, including trading stock in terms of section 22, and capital allowances in terms of sections 11(e), 12C and 13quin of the Act, together with capital gains tax consequences in terms of the Eighth Schedule to the Income Tax Act. The regulation for income tax purposes of cryptocurrency transactions in Australia was discussed, with a view to making similar recommendations in South Africa. The research was situated in the interpretative paradigm, a doctrinal methodology was applied, together with a qualitative analysis of documentary data. The discussion was limited to the income tax consequences of cryptocurrencies as applying to individuals. - Description: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an urgent, global health problem that stems from the inappropriate use of and poor adherence to antibiotics that treat diseases in human beings. It is further exacerbated by the proliferation of antibiotics into the food chain, particularly from the overuse and misuse of antibiotics in agricultural, meat, and dairy production. The recently developed World Health Organisation (WHO) One Health (OH) approach encompasses and acknowledges the various interconnected pathways that drive AMR between the human, animal, and environmental spheres. Until recently, AMR health challenges have been viewed primarily through a biomedical lens, but this study draws on the more holistic perspective that the One Health approach offers. AMR from food sources (AMR-OH) is an underrepresented topic of research. Creating digital health communication for low-literate end-users on this topic using the One Health approach is an emerging field of research. AMR-OH has not been extensively covered in health communication campaigns and requires developing context-specific digital educational materials, such as the ones this study presents. This study draws on Social Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) theory elements to create a suggested approach to disseminate AMR-OH information. This intervention was aimed at low-health-literate end-users to accomplish two objectives. First, create awareness and improve knowledge about AMR-OH via a video. Second, offer feasible, easily implementable behaviour change actions in the form of an infographic comprising four food safety steps (Clean, Separate, Cook, and Chill). The study was conducted in three phases. First, recruit participants and conduct a literature review to identify the effective SBCC elements of health communication intervention design. Second, conduct a needs assessment to gauge the volunteering participants’ familiarity with digital media and their current health literacy on AMR-OH. Third, conceptualise and design the two AMR-OH digital educational materials (a video and accompanying infographic). The materials were first evaluated by the researcher using the Clear Communication Index (CCI) test, and then shared with the participants via WhatsApp to be evaluated by them, using two end-user tests: the Patient Education Material Assessment Tool (PEMAT) and the Suitability Assessment of Materials (SAM) test. These two tests assessed the materials’ readability, understandability, and actionability. A post-evaluation, semi-structured interview (SSI) was then conducted with the participants. Deductive thematic analysis was conducted on the SSI data and analysed using the five design benchmarks as themes: Ease of Use of Technology, Clarity of Content, Appropriate Format, Target Audience Resonance (Appropriate for target audience), and Clear calls to Action (Actionable). The rapid onset of COVID-19 restrictions forced the project to scale down and shift entirely online. The study could be conducted due to the active and enthusiastic virtual participation of two Rhodes University Peer Educators (PEs) whose contribution was vital to developing and evaluating the materials. The needs assessment showed that the PEs were comfortable using WhatsApp, had reliable internet connection when on campus, and used this social media platform for professional and personal communication. This assessment also showed that they had prior knowledge of AMR but only from the human health perspective. The video and infographic scored high on the Clear Communication Index, 93.3% and 94.4%, respectively. The PEs’ evaluation of the materials was also high on the PEMAT and SAM assessments: video narration (100%, 80% respectively), video (100%, 99% respectively), and infographic (86%, 90% respectively). This study produced an easy-to-use, accessible and appropriate online repository of AMR-OH information in a novel format with actionable steps. The post-evaluation SSI revealed that the materials and the channel of delivery were welcomed. The PEs expressed their confidence in receiving, using, and sharing this novel presentation of evidence and solutions-based information about AMR-OH. They further highlighted that this is the first time they have received and evaluated context-specific digital multimedia about AMR-OH and that this information equipped them to adopt the food safety behaviours – namely, the four food safety steps. This study demonstrates that the theory-informed creation of engaging digital media for AMR-OH is feasible and viable. Furthermore, it affirms that engaging digital media for AMR-OH can be created to enhance the knowledge of end-users about this health issue. The scaled-down approach created a blueprint to implement a more extensive intervention in the future, informed by this intervention’s methods and tools. A systematic methodology to evaluating optimised machine learning based network intrusion detection systems

- Description: A network intrusion detection system (NIDS) is essential for mitigating computer network attacks in various scenarios. However, the increasing complexity of computer networks and attacks makes classifying unseen or novel network traffic challenging. Supervised machine learning techniques (ML) used in a NIDS can be affected by different scenarios. Thus, dataset recency, size, and applicability are essential factors when selecting and tuning a machine learning classifier. This thesis explores developing and optimising several supervised ML algorithms with relatively new datasets constructed to depict real-world scenarios. The methodology includes empirical analyses of systematic ML-based NIDS for a near real-world network system to improve intrusion detection. The thesis is experimental heavy for model assessment. Data preparation methods are explored, followed by feature engineering techniques. The model evaluation process involves three experiments testing against a validation, un-trained, and retrained set. They compare several traditional machine learning and deep learning classifiers to identify the best NIDS model. Results show that the focus on feature scaling, feature selection methods and ML algo- rithm hyper-parameter tuning per model is an essential optimisation component. Distance based ML algorithm performed much better with quantile transformation whilst the tree based algorithms performed better without scaling. Permutation importance performs as a feature selection method compared to feature extraction using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) when applied against all ML algorithms explored. Random forests, Sup- port Vector Machines and recurrent neural networks consistently achieved the best results with high macro f1-score results of 90% 81% and 73% for the CICIDS 2017 dataset; and 72% 68% and 73% against the CICIDS 2018 dataset. , Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, Computer Science, 2022

- Description: The Tsitsa River is the largest remaining river that is without a dam in South Africa, and so the government has pledged to install two major dams for irrigation and hydroelectricity, under the Mzimvubu Water Project. These dams are intended to supply water and electricity to surrounding communities as well as the large neighbouring urban areas of Mthatha and Tsolo. However, large areas of the Tsitsa Catchment (~494 000 ha) are degraded, posing the possibility that if these dams were to be created, they would inevitably fill with sediment and silt within a few decades. To address these issues, the Tsitsa Project was established in 2014 to co-ordinate actions by government, developers and local communities in order to restore the landscape condition and prevent soil erosion, as well as to improve the livelihoods of the people who live there (Fabricius, Biggs, & Powell, 2016). Research into the landscape condition as well and the environmental interactions with local communities are therefore highly necessary in order to guide restoration practices to their best effect. The economic necessity for livestock production in the catchment indicates its urgent need for a better understanding of its current effects on the catchment landscape and vegetation. The overall goal of this study is to contribute to the knowledge needed to manage the area in a sustainable way. - Description: This is a case study conducted in the Methodist Church of Southern Africa (MCSA), Grahamstown, in the Eastern Cape. Against the backdrop of identifying and conceptualising ethically oriented leadership competencies, the purpose of this study was to explore service as a leadership competency. The literature reviewed in this research underscored the importance of effective and ethical leadership, but critiqued the Westernised, individualistic orientation of the conceptualisation of service as a leadership competency. Based on a review of the literature, this study proposes that when African leaders are in leadership four components of Ubuntu are involved when they exercise service as a leadership competency. These components are collective consideration, collective compassion, community server and Ubuntu humility. The main aim of this study is to investigate if leaders display these four components when exercising service towards their followers, and if so, how, and why they do so. A conceptual framework of components of Ubuntu, which culminated in research themes and propositions, were produced from the literature chapter. A qualitative research method was adopted in this study in which eight participants were selected through convenience sampling for this case study. One minister and seven Vice-Presidents of various organisations in the Methodist Church were interviewed. Semi-structured interviews were conducted for data collection and a deductive thematic analysis approach was employed to analyse data. Also, the critical incident technique (CIT) was utilised to structure interview questions, which is best fitting to solicit complex and comprehensive data from the interviewees. In its findings, the study confirmed the presence of the four components of Ubuntu, but several delimitations and limitations are acknowledged. Nevertheless, the study has made some contribution to understanding the display of service as a leadership competency in an African context.
