Exploring cultural understandings of traumatic stress among the amaXhosa traditional healers in the Eastern Cape

In a world that is becoming progressively aware, tolerant and accepting of differences among people, there is growing interest to challenge and amend psychological constructs that are unfairly generalised universally. Literature abounds with appeals for more research to be conducted on non-western cultures so that scholars can be at a better position to ‘decolonise’ the PTSD diagnosis as they will then have an improved understanding of understudied non-western societies. The Eastern Cape province of South Africa is home to the AmaXhosa tribe, the second largest ethnic group in the country. This study seeks to explore indigenous understandings and coping strategies of these people in regards to traumatic exposure. This is done through gaining insights of AmaXhosa traditional healers- Amagqirha (Diviners) and AmaXhwele (Herbalists). A sample of eight participants is sourced from Grahamstown (Makhanda) and the rural areas of Peddie (Ngqushwa). Through the use of two case studies that are presented and open ended follow up questions, the traditional healers relate their perspectives on how they interpret symptoms of psychological trauma and the strategies they employ to facilitate coping/healing of their clients in their context. It was discovered that traditional healers perceived traumatic events as phenomena that befalls only those that are spiritually vulnerable, either due to strained relationships with their ancestors, bewitchment by an enemy or jealous person or simply torment by a wandering wicked spirit. Rituals and practices of how to combat this vulnerability are then outlined.

- Description: Streets and sidewalks should be seen as public spaces within themselves (Flositz, 2010,iii) this thought triggered an interest in public spaces and what they offer the users and community in which they are placed. This research will examine not only the impacts of the colonialist regime’s planning on Port Elizabeth, but more specifically the segregation and planning of public spaces affecting New Brighton, a predominantly “Black” suburb along the periphery of the city that came to be as a result of forced removals from the city centre (Pettman, 1913: 298). The main argument being carried through this treatise is the significant role that public spaces play in the lives of the urban poor (Dewar & Uytenbogaardt, 1995: 10) especially looking at South Africa and the impact apartheid had on public spaces. It looks at the potential and the ability of the design of public architecture to develop community spaces for all that contributes to a sense of place and pride for the community of New Brighton, Port Elizabeth. This treatise uses the understandings and information gathered throughout the research conducted to develop a suitable design response that generated a significant educational community hub inclusive of a Learning Resource Centre. It will strengthen not only the connection between the various users (races, religions, genders or ages) but also the current segregated and isolated schools within New Brighton’s community. The intention was to bridge not only street and building together but also school and community as a cohesive environment that works together to create a unique experience, exclusive to that area impacted by the context and community in which it sits. Ideas of public space, the in-between and Montessori’s schooling together with the notions of place-making is what ultimately influenced many of the design decisions and the authors theoretical stance. Looking at streets as more than just movement routes or thoroughfares from point A to point B, we can see them as places within a space, where one can experience the world that moves around them. Ultimately the design developed as a response to the identified issues and challenges and created a facility that not only meets the need of the under-resourced secondary schools in New Brighton but also contributes to the development of the public realm of those schools.

Pragmatics teaching: on the development of learners’ linguistic competence among selected East London District schools

- Description: South Africa was listed amongst the countries with a percentage of students with achievement too low for estimation by “Progress International Results in Reading” in 2011. Meanwhile, there was also an indication that, high school learners in the Eastern Cape Province are highly challenged, as far as their ability to produce speech, as well as the ability to interpret meaning beyond what is literally suggested. Since such difficulties usually pose problems of content understanding, concerned researchers in the field of language took it upon themselves to investigate the underlying cause of the problem, in order to prevent more problems of pragmatics incompetence, such as, problems with social interaction that could retard one’s ability to function independently as an adult. While many studies have been conducted in the area of Pragmatics language competence, this study found it necessary to contribute around this debate. Since the study was two-fold, isiXhosa Home language learners of Grades 10 to 12 were investigated with an objective to determine the extent of pragmatic incompetence and the Teachers were investigated to determine the effectiveness of their teaching of pragmatics language. A number of 108 high school isiXhosa learners, of ages of between 16 and 18 years, from East London Directorate, 36 per Grade, from the three selected schools high schools, were sampled, 36 consisting of 18 males and 18 females per grade from each selected high school. 9 isiXhosa Home Language teachers of between the ages of 45 to 54 years were sampled from the selected schools. This study used an assessment test for the learners and the questionnaire for the teachers, as a means of data collection techniques. The study applied a high consideration of validity as well as of ethical matters in order to ensure the reliability of results. The study found that, isiXhosa Home language learners’ levels of pragmatic competence are high and with the appropriate use of good methods of pragmatics language teaching, learners’ pragmatics competence can develop.This study will be able to encourage syllabus designers to collaborate with subject teachers, beginning right at the inception of the syllabus planning. IsiXhosa language teachers can develop teaching material appropriate for their primary goal, which is the development of pragmatic competence. Further research is recommended to investigate more around this area of study to a point where isiXhosa Home language can be counted amongst the great and valued languages of South Africa.

The anti-inflammatory effects of Sutherlandia Frutescens in a cell and animal model

- Description: The South African medicinal plant, Sutherlandia frutescens has anti-diabetic, antiinflammatory and antioxidant properties. Many of the mediators of inflammation are also involved in obesity and diabetes. Furthermore, T2D can either induce inflammation, or exacerbate the inflammatory response by maintaining imbalances between pro-and anti-inflammatory mediators. Two macrophage sub-populations involved in the regulation of immune responses have been defined. These are classically activated macrophages (M1) which stimulate inflammation, and alternatively activated macrophages (M2), which show anti-inflammatory activity. Therefore it is hypothesised that S. frutescens can potentially regulate macrophage polarization states which, in turn, influence metabolic immunomodulatory processes. The aims of this study were firstly to identify the mechanisms(s) by which S. frutescens could improve the low-grade inflammatory status in obese and T2D individuals using a transgenic mouse model of obesity, and secondly to determine the immunomodulating properties of S. frutescens in the human monocytic THP-1 cell line. Groups of nine week old male db/db mice were gavaged daily with water (vehicle control), Vildagliptin (10mL kg-1)(positive medication control) or hot aqueous S. frutescens extract at concentrations of 5mg, 50mg, 250mg kg-1 for 4 weeks. Body weight and fasting plasma glucose levels were determined weekly. The potential for hot aqueous S. frutescens extract to lower postprandial hyperglycaemia and promote insulin sensitivity was determined by an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) after a 16 hour fast, and an insulin radioimmunoassay (RIA) after a 4 hour fast before termination. After 4 weeks of hot aqueous S. frutescens treatment the total percentage body weight of 13 week old db/db mice was reduced, but hyperglycaemia was not prevented. Human THP-1 monocytes were stimulated to differentiate into macrophages with phorbol-12myristate-13acetate (PMA) and cultured under pro-inflammatory conditions (M1) or anti-inflammatory conditions (M2). Cell viability and anti-proliferative effects of LPS and S. frutescens extracts were determined. The effect of hot aqueous and ethanolic S. frutescens extracts on M1 and M2 macrophage cell surface markers was investigated by flow cytometry using CD86 (M1) and CD206 (M2). The effect of the S. frutescens extracts on three signalling pathways and a pro-inflammatory mediator activated in an LPS-induced inflammatory response were determined using Western blotting. Changes in mRNA gene expression levels of downstream transcription factors, cytokines and chemokines associated with M1 and M2 polarised macrophages were investigated using qRT-PCR. Both ethanolic and hot aqueous S. frutescens extracts reduced cytotoxicity caused by LPS. S. frutescens extracts alone did not alter cell viability. Furthermore, both hot and ethanolic S. frutescens extracts reduced expression of the M1 marker CD86 and nonsignificantly induced expression of an M2 marker CD206, following LPS stimulation. Following M2 induction, the M1 and M2 cell surface markers were reverted to baseline M0 macrophage expression by both S. frutescens extracts. The S. frutescens extracts mediated immune-regulatory activity through suppression of the pro-inflammatory p38 MAPK and NFκB signalling pathways and regulated apoptosis through the ERK1/2 pathway. The hot aqueous S. frutescens extract exerted anti-inflammatory effects through the IKK pathway and/ or GSK3β signalling pathway. This thesis demonstrates that S. frutescens promotes macrophage homeostasis by maintaining the balance between M1 and M2 macrophages during pro-and antiinflammatory immune responses. The regulation may occur during the activation and polarization process, via rapid deactivation of M1 macrophages and a decrease in need for macrophages to switch to an M2 phenotype. Furthermore S. frutescens is hypothesised to play a role in the regulation of the GSK3β signalling which plays a central role in regulating inflammation associated with pathophysiological conditions such as IR, T2D and obesity via the PI3K/Akt pathway.

Student counsellors’ utilisation of the wellness questionnaire for higher education in a student counselling centre

- Description: Students face a variety of stressors, such as personal, career and/or academic/learning concerns and often seek counselling from student counselling centres at their respective Higher Education institutions. Wellness counselling is aimed at assisting clients to prevent illnesses from developing and to create and maintain healthy lifestyle choices. A wellness counselling model includes a step-by-step approach and one step is to conduct a wellness assessment. Several wellness assessments exist but it was found that the assessments were not applicable for the SA student population, and so the Wellness Questionnaire for Higher Education (WQHE) was developed. As the WQHE is a relatively new assessment, there is not much research that has been conducted, specifically there is no research based on the counselling process following the administration of the assessment. Therefore, this study seeks to explore and describe how counsellors administered and utilised the WQHE as part of the counselling process. The research sample consisted of nine participants who administered the WQHE with their clients. Purposive sampling was the non-probability strategy employed, therefore participants were invited to attend an individual semi-structured interview. The implications of the findings are that the WQHE is a useful and viable assessment to assist clients resolve their difficulties and improve their functioning. The WQHE can be administered to clients who present with a variety of presenting problems. The WQHE can be used effectively alongside a variety of counselling theories/frameworks and other psychometric or self-assessments. The administration of the WQHE in itself was found to be useful as it educated and empowered the clients to understand their wellness levels and to provide them with a holistic view of themselves. Furthermore, the clients felt educated to understand their wellness levels and broaden their understanding of the wellness dimensions.

- Description: By taking Mutare District as its lens to explore the dynamics of rural food security in Zimbabwe, this thesis assesses the role of the state in tackling hunger among its rural populations. It examines the impact of colonial and post-colonial food policy on efforts to combat food insecurity. The thesis explores the uneasy options pursued by rural communities in response to droughts and other threats of hunger. It identifies and ranks crop failure as the chief culprit to the district’s efforts towards food security. The thesis illustrates the contestations between the state and its rural people over which sustainable approaches to adopt in order to end hunger and how such debates continually shaped policy. It grapples with questions about the various understandings of food security advanced by scholars within the rural African context. It demonstrates, for instance, that the post-colonial state inherited an erstwhile crop production structure which shunned food crops in favour of cash crops. There was obvious bias against local preferences for a robust, home-grown food regime which did not put rural livelihoods at risk of starvation. The thesis also argues that food can be used as an instrument of war as evidenced during the liberation struggle when the vast majority of people residing in rural areas, particularly women and children, were pushed to the edges of survival. In addition, the thesis demonstrates that the infamous Marange diamonds turned out to be a curse rather than a blessing due to the state’s lack of transparency in the beneficiation chain. It concludes by a detailed examination of the political economy of food aid, demonstrating why donors have not succeeded for long to combat hunger in the district. In light of this background, the thesis provides a more nuanced analysis of the whole question of rural food security using archival material, newspapers, government and civil society reports, interviews and field observation. The thesis benefits from the use of a multi-pronged theoretical framework to capture the disparate themes that form the bedrock of this study.

The quantitative findings indicate that all three of the measurement scales were reliable due to Cronbach’s alpha coefficient exceeding 0.60. Out of the three dependent variables, psychological contract is found to be highly correlated to job satisfaction. The findings of the study revealed that psychological contract has a positive medium correlation with job satisfaction, and that psychological contract has a medium negative correlation with turnover intention, while it has negligible correlation with organisation citizenship behaviour for the samples. The findings of this research study contribute to the literature available in terms of the construct of psychological contract, job satisfaction, organisation citizenship behaviour and turnover intention. Consequently, the results from this study provided the management of this company with important information on psychological contract and its relationship with work-related behaviours.

- Description: The development of tourism has been heralded to be a mechanism for sustainable rural development. Sustainable development of any nature requires that any efforts aimed at developing rural areas must involve the community in which the development is undertaken. This has given rise to concerted efforts by governments and development practitioners to involve local communities in development initiatives undertaken within their locale. The study analysed the importance of community participation in tourism development, with the aim to ensure the sustainable rural development of areas such as Nqileni village. This was undertaken using a qualitative research approach using semi-structured interviews to solicit data from twenty members of the Nqileni village community. The data was analysed with the assistance of a specialist qualitative data analyst, using the NVivo sytem, version 11, and was objectively interpreted and analysed by the researcher. The results revealed that the community viewed their participation to be paramount in development initiatives undertaken within the area, which also allows for the building of capacity, and ultimately empowers the community to meaningfully participate in the sustainable development of the area. Finally, the study proposed a community-based tourism model for sustainable rural development, which placed community participations at the root of sustainable development. This has been presented in a form that proposes that a leadership that works together in harmony, coupled with a flow of tourists and investment in the area, which can encourage the community to participate in tourism, resulting in a tourism economy that will allow for positive impacts (such as employment, conservation of resources and preservation of culture).This will enable the reduction of poverty, revival of other economic sectors within the area and foster social cohesion, and ultimately developing the area and its people.

HEIs in South Africa are required to produce a sustainability report for the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) on an annual basis. HEIs are not required to use a specific set of guidelines to create a report that complies with the DHET reporting requirements. HEIs face a number of challenges in effectively managing and reporting on sustainability information, such as poor sharing and communication of information and combining information from different sources to form an integrated report. Well-structured guidelines that adheres to institution standards and governmental reporting requirements can effectively streamline the sustainability reporting process. This study investigates the requirements and challenges of effective sustainability reporting for HEIs in South Africa. A set of Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G4 guidelines were reworked to support effective sustainability reporting by South African HEIs. Nelson Mandela University is one such HEI, which is affected by the challenges of managing and reporting on strategic sustainability information. Nelson Mandela University was therefore used as a case study in this research study. An in-depth study was done exploring how prominent international universities apply the GRI guidelines to contribute and generate integrated sustainability reports for their specific HEIs and general reporting needs and requirements. Additionally, an in-depth study of the German integrated reporting guidelines for HEI’s was conducted. Furthermore, a study of the South African DHET reporting requirements was conducted to explore the similarities that exists between the GRI (G4) guidelines and DHET requirements. The guidelines were evaluated by Nelson Mandela University personnel and academics. The final product consists of a set of GRI guidelines that have been adapted to satisfy both GRI and DHET requirements for integrated sustainability reporting for South African HEIs. The implications of teacher development in the improvement of learner achievement in the Kwamhlanga sub-district of Mpumalanga Province

- Description: This study sought to investigate the implication of teacher development in learner performance with reference to the Nkangala sub-district of the Mpumalanga Department of Education. My interest is this area of study was triggered in the debate around the mismatch between the resources which the Department of Education invests in the teacher development programmes vis-à-vis learner performance in schools, in particular, the Grade 12 class which is the exit point of the school system. The argument is that the department invests significant resources in developing teachers but that there appears to be very little return on the investment in the form of learner performance which has been the subject of debate and discussion for many years in the education circles. The study made use of the mixed method approach in terms of which both quantitative and qualitative methods were fully employed. Questionnaires and interviews were used as the data collection methods. In order to collect the requisite quantitative data four teachers and three school management teams were sampled using the simple random sampling method per school in the sub-district. The return rate of the instruments was more than 50%. For the qualitative data subject advisors were sampled using the purposive sampling method. Eight of the twelve advisors who were sampled participated in the face to face interviews. The collected data was then analysed using the Special Programme for Social Sciences (SPSS). The literature reviewed included Senge’s Learning Organisation theory and Wenger’s social learning theory which were explored extensively and which informed the study to a significant extent. The researcher also explored the legislative framework which informs the HRD in general and teacher development in particular. v The study revealed that there is, indeed, a significant relationship between teacher development programmes and learner performance. The study also revealed that teacher development programmes do, in fact, address the needs of both learners and teachers. An interesting finding, which is also a matter of concern, was the finding that teachers are almost, if not totally, excluded from participating in the teacher development programmes offered. The study also found that the content of teacher development programmes is devised by subject specialists who are not based in the classroom and who have little experience of the prevailing classroom situation. It appeared that this approach was creating a huge gap in the teacher development programmes. The researcher made several recommendations and also developed a proposed (rudimentary) teacher development model, as informed by the study and the gap which was identified from the literature review. The model is extremely basic and, therefore, requires further research on the part of education practitioners and/or anyone interested in the field of teacher development and education.

- Description: Widespread research exists about the challenges of getting boys to read and the gap in reading performance between boys and girls. Using a case study design within a qualitative approach, this study investigated whether engagement in a reading club could help boys in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to position themselves as readers. The literature review examined factors that hindered or advanced reading and the reading development of boys, particular in the Arab-Muslim context. Two theoretical frameworks underpin this study: Social Learning Theory which allowed for reading engagement of a social nature and Third Space Theory which enabled this engagement bringing together the in and out of school literacy practices. Grade 4 students at a school in Saudi Arabia were invited to partake in a 45 minute after-school reading club for 12 consecutive weeks. Participatory Visual Methodologies and a Reflective journal were used to generate data. - Description: Widespread research exists about the challenges of getting boys to read and the gap in reading performance between boys and girls. Using a case study design within a qualitative approach, this study investigated whether engagement in a reading club could help boys in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to position themselves as readers. The literature review examined factors that hindered or advanced reading and the reading development of boys, particular in the Arab-Muslim context. Two theoretical frameworks underpin this study: Social Learning Theory which allowed for reading engagement of a social nature and Third Space Theory which enabled this engagement bringing together the in and out of school literacy practices. Grade 4 students at a school in Saudi Arabia were invited to partake in a 45 minute after-school reading club for 12 consecutive weeks. Participatory Visual Methodologies and a Reflective journal were used to generate data. In addition, there is a need to measure sustainability performance as sustainability aims to radically transform how businesses understand and create value. Measuring sustainability performance can determine whether a business is moving in the right direction. This study developed a proposed set of sustainability ratios that could be used to determine the efficient and effective sustainability performance of public listed companies in South Africa. The study used a mixed methods research approach in three phases consisting of ten steps. In Phase 1 (Step 1), a secondary research in the form of a literature review was conducted. The critically evaluated secondary literature sources were used to create a theoretical framework of sustainability ratios and a ‘schedule for content analyses. The purpose of Phase 3 was to test the usability, relevance, measurability, understandability and comparability of the sustainability ratios proposed in the theoretical framework as well as the sustainability ratios that were applied in the content of sustainability reports in South Africa. Step 10 represented the outcome of the study, a set of sustainability ratios was proposed. A set of 101 sustainability ratios were proposed. The proposed set of sustainability ratios linked the different sustainability issues to financial results by classifying them into four main categories, namely, (i) sustainable operational efficiency and effectiveness ratios (SOEE), (ii) sustainable risk - minimisation ratios (SRM), (iii) sustainable reputation – brand value ratios (SRBV) and (iv) sustainable innovation ratios (SI). These sustainability ratios could be used to assess the efficiency and effectiveness of a business’ sustainability strategies, its risk minimisation strategies, innovative capacities and reputation as well as brand value enhancing strategies. As the concern for business sustainability increases, the proposed sustainability ratios might satisfy the concerns of customers and stakeholders. Capacity building efforts for cooperatives are very crucial in increasing their effectiveness and to redress problems associated with limited administrative and organisational capacity. By providing technical assistance, training, and grant funds, the functioning of the cooperatives is enhanced and ultimately the outcomes are improved. Despite consensus about the importance of capacity-building, little high-quality evidence exists on the impact of capacity-building investments. This research paper presents the findings from the assessment conducted on the impact of capacity- building initiatives offered to cooperatives. The participants of the study were cooperatives from the Eastern Cape, all eight district municipalities were represented and the study included stakeholders working with cooperatives that included various government departments, agencies and the private sector. Findings from the study provide clear evidence that capacity-building efforts increase the effectiveness of cooperatives to plan, organise and manage their organisations. It has emerged strongly from research that cooperatives that have received capacity-building support in any form, have improved in terms of their functioning compared to those that have never been capacitated before. However, cooperatives are still faced with many challenges specifically relating to operational challenges, which include administration, financial, and governance and weak capability in terms of the knowledge and skills they possess.

- Description: It is increasingly recognized that the cultural and creative industries (CCIs) can play an important role in economic growth and development. Governments around the world, including South Africa, are implementing culture‐led economic growth and development strategies on national and regional scales. CCIs tend to cluster around large cities because of existing hard and soft infrastructure such as networking advantages and access to skilled labour, however, much less is known about the potential of the CCIs to drive rural development. This thesis thus investigates the potential of the CCIs to cluster in small towns and rural areas. Moreover, it examines the relationship between the CCIs and socio‐economic development. The CCIs have been touted as a catalyst for economic growth and development and so have often been used in urban regeneration schemes. The Sarah Baartman District (SBD) of South Africa’s Eastern Cape has identified culture as a potential new economic driver. Establishing a new development path is necessary as the former economic mainstay, agriculture, has declined in the region, creating poverty and unemployment problems. However, the SBD has only small towns which, according to the literature, are not suited to CCI clustering. Despite this, there is evidence of cultural clustering in some of the SBD’s small towns like Nieu Bethesda and Bathurst. This research therefore conducted an audit of the CCIs in the district and used geographic information systems (GIS) to map their locations by UNESCO Framework of Cultural Statistics (FCS) domains in order to determine the extent to which clustering has occurred in a small town setting. The audit identified 1 048 CCIs operating in the district and determined that clustering is possible within some small towns, depending on their demographic, economic, social, geographic and historic characteristics. For small towns where clusters exist or the potential for cluster formation is present, the domains in which the town holds a comparative advantage, based on domain proportions and location quotients, should be pursued for local economic development (LED). In this case, Visual Arts and Crafts and Cultural Heritage were prominent throughout the district while Design and Creative Services and Performance and Celebration had small regional concentrations. Theory suggests that the presence of CCIs is linked to higher levels of economic development as the creative class is more likely to be attracted to more highly developed areas, usually large cities. Furthermore, spillover effects from cultural activity promotes further development under the virtuous cycle. To investigate the relationship between CCI clusters and socio‐economic development, the locational data of municipal level CCI numbers is overlaid with a regional development indicator, a socio‐economic status index, which is based on census data and includes economic and social components. Results show that there is a general positive trend of CCIs locating in larger numbers (clustering) in areas with higher socio‐economic development performances.

- Description: The aims and principles of the post-apartheid South African school curricula, ranging from the Revised National Curriculum Statement Grades R-9 and the National Curriculum Statement Grades 10-12, to include the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (Grades 1-12), have been aligned with the aims and principles of the South African Constitution. The aims and principles, among others, speak to the establishment of human rights, inclusivity, environmental and social justice, and valuing of indigenous knowledge systems. These are the bedrock of all the subjects and do not necessarily confine themselves to the science subjects only; even though the call of inclusion of indigenous knowledge in the sciences is oversubscribed. There has been concerns raised variously that the integration of indigenous knowledge systems in the curriculum, generally, and in the teaching of the respective subjects, particularly, does not necessarily happen as it should be. Thus, the purpose of this mixed methods approach study that adopted a concurrent triangulation mixed methods design and premised on the postpositivist paradigm investigated the integration of indigenous knowledge in the Intermediate Phase school curriculum in a selected Education District in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. The guiding lenses adopted for this study were two-fold. The main primary theoretical framework drew from three integration theories: (a) Huang and Newell’s (2003) Knowledge Integration Processes and Dynamics notions; (b) Beane’s (1995) Curriculum Integration and the Disciplines of Knowledge and (c) Harden’s (2000) Integration ladder: A Tool for Curriculum Planning and Evaluation. The ‘secondary’ lens of analysis, which the researcher named, the ‘supplemental framework’, was constituted by notions and constructs derived from the indigenous knowledge systems discourses and postcolonial notions and constructs. The study revealed, among other findings, that (i) whilst a majority of teachers claimed to integrate IK in their classrooms, a significant number did not, and those who claimed to be integrating were unsure about how to integrate (ii) the majority of teachers, HoDs and Subject Advisors were either poorly trained or did not receive any training in the integration of IK (iii) the support and monitoring of IK integration was poor to non-existent. Thus, the study proposes a model, the Integrative Indigenous Knowledge Integration Support and Monitoring Model (IIKISMM), which may act as a framework for the coordination of the support and monitoring of IK integration in the school curriculum. There are significant recommendations offered by the study to teachers and policy makers with regards the integration of indigenous knowledge systems in the school curriculum. Also offered by the study are possibilities for further research in the integration of indigenous knowledge system in the curriculum.

Oral narratives as intertexts in selected Nigerian films

- Description: This research into the interface between orality and Nigerian film builds on previous scholarly works in the field (Ladebo (1992), Onabajo and M’Bayo (2009), Omolola (2013), Ezeigbo (2013), Mgbemere (2015) and Onzuike (2016)). Evident from these studies is the prevalence of recurring patterns of oral narratives in Nigerian film. The aim of this study is to consider the following research questions: Do film producers/directors adopt the use of oral narratives in Nigerian film texts? How do oral narratives translate into films? What is the rate of recurrence of oral narratives in Nigerian films? Do oral narratives aesthetically influence the quality of Nigerian films? For the purpose of this study a selection of nine Nigerian films (three each from the Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo groups). These films are analysed as primary texts to show the occurrence of elements of orature and oral narratives. Underpinning such analysis is the theory of intertextuality as coined by the French linguist Julia Kristeva. Kristeva sees the text as “intertextuality […] within the text of society and history” (Kristeva, 1980: 37). This approach is augmented by the views of Greenblatt on New Historicism, which implies literature should be studied and interpreted within the context of the history of the author and cultural/social context. The nine films under discussion are considered within their cultural/social context.

- Description: The study focuses on the assessment of the Implementation of Performance Management System at Amathole District Municipality in the Eastern Cape. Local government is the closest sphere of government to service users, therefore it is expected to be a forefront of efficient service delivery. Local government needs to demonstrate that performance is managed, measured and improved on a continuous basis. For this purpose it must develop a comprehensive performance management system. The development of such a system is, however, not without challenges and local government should identify crucial elements which should be incorporated in such a system (van de Waldt, 2006:128). The aim of this study is to explore the challenges faced by Amathole District Municipality to see how service delivery can be improved through the effective implementation of performance management systems. The researcher has used a quantitative methodology in this study and has prepared questionnaires for the employee participants based at Amathole District Municipality. The total population of the employees is 1700 but the researcher uses a sample of between 20 and 30 employees within the Municipality. The findings of the study reveals that Amathole District Municipality does comply with performance management system policy in order to have an efficient and effective service delivery more operational policies will help the municipality to overcome its financial challenges need to be developed, so that they can be a change in terms of the municipality’s spending.
