- Description: In this paper, we report on the synthesis of Zn(II) phthalocyanine derivatives and their conjugates with core/shell and core/shell/shell semiconductor quantum dots (SQDs). Zn(II) mono amino-carboxyethylphenoxy phthalocyanine (1), Zn(II) mono 3-carboxyphenoxy-tris(pyridin-2-yloxy) phthalocyanine (2) and Zn(II) mono aminophenoxy-tris(benzothiazole) phthalocyanine (3) were synthesized. The photophysical and optical limiting properties of the phthalocyanine (Pc) complexes and their conjugates with SQDs were investigated in dimethyl sulfoxide. The optical limiting behaviour of the Pc complexes and their conjugates were measured by the open aperture Z-scan technique at laser excitation wavelength of 532 nm with 10 ns pulse. The conjugates outperformed the Pc complexes alone with the conjugates of 2-SQDs affording highest nonlinear absorption coefficient (βeff) value of ∼80 cm/GW and lowest limiting threshold (Ilim) value of ∼0.27 J·cm−2 as compared to other samples while complex 1 gave low βeff and high Ilim values of 42.2 cm/GW and 1.39 J·cm−2, respectively.

- Description: Spelling poses a challenge to Arabic-speaking learners due to the complexity of the morphological and orthographic system in Arabic. Arabic morphology has been argued to play a critical role in spelling since its morphological operations are built on a system consisting of a root that is interlocking into different patterns of vowels to form different categories of words. In addition, Arabic orthography is considered to be loyal to the morphographic principle (Ravid, 2012), where morphemes correspond to graphic representation regardless of the pronunciation, especially in the non-vowelized texts. This study made a detailed classification of spelling errors in a word dictation task, based on morphological structures, undertaken by 107 Typically-developing learners (TD) and learners with learning disabiities (LD) attending the same schools. All participants ranged in age from 7 years, 3 months to 15 years, 2 months (grades 2 to 8). The spelling task was made up of 400 common words representing all morphological forms in different conjugations and grammatical classes. The results indicated that learners made three types of errors: errors with respect to the root, errors with respect to the word pattern, and errors with respect to both the root and the word pattern. The results also showed that TD and LD learners follow a similar pattern of complexity even though the LD group produced more errors than the TD group. The results revealed that MA and PA exhibited significant positive regression (b= 9.398, 16.106 respectively) with spelling, indicating that learners with higher scores in PA and MA have higher scores in spelling. The results argued for the crucial contribution that morphological awareness makes towards the general spelling abilities among learners and provide additional evidence for the nonlinear growth of morphological knowedge in spelling. In addition, spelling errors suggested that the spelling process goes in a hierarchical way where words can be accessed and processed either according to the root or according to the stem. Intact verbs are processed according to their root and word pattern. Some weak verb forms, whose radicals undergo modifications, are processed according to their stem, while those whose radicals are fully represented in the spoken word, are processed according to their root and word patterns. Therefore, roots or stems are firstly accessed and attached to basic word patterns (the grapheme without diacritics and affixes). Thereafter, prefixes and, then, suffixes are attached to the word pattern and, finally, diacritics are accessed and attached to the word pattern.

- Description: Wetlands provide a range of supporting, regulating and provisioning ecosystem services, including hydrological benefits such as flood attenuation and sustaining base flows. Despite their value, wetlands are one of the most vulnerable ecosystems in South Africa. Palmiet wetlands in the Eastern and Western Cape are particularly threatened. Palmiet (Prionium serratum) is a robust perennial plant that is endemic to wetlands and rivers located in the sandstones and quartzites of the Table Mountain Group (TMG), in the Eastern and Western Cape as well as the Natal Group sandstones in KwaZulu-Natal. Palmiet is described as an ecosystem engineer because of its ability to alter its environment and create large valley-bottom wetlands. The Krom River is an important water source for the city of Port Elizabeth and there has been a decline in palmiet wetlands along the Krom River as a result of alien vegetation invasion, agricultural activity, and gully erosion. Working for Water has been clearing alien vegetation and Working for Wetlands has been installing rehabilitation structures in the Krom River catchment for a number of years. There are, however, serious knowledge gaps in the understanding of palmiet wetland structure and function, particularly in respect of the hydrological functioning of these wetland systems. The aim of this study was to investigate the hydrology (surface and groundwater) behind these wetland systems. The investigation focussed on small-scale dynamics of the palmiet wetland system in order to increase general understanding of the surface water and groundwater processes of these wetland systems. Field work was concentrated on the Kompanjiesdrif and Krugersland palmiet wetlands in the upper K90A Krom River catchment. The investigation involved the installation of piezometers, water quality and stable isotope sampling and analysis, an Electrical Resistivity Tomography survey, and hydrological and mixing cell modelling. The results of the investigation indicate that the hydrological functioning of palmiet wetlands is closely linked with high sub-surface discharges typically associated with TMG aquifers. It is proposed that the palmiet wetlands are sustained by significant amounts of sub-surface water (both groundwater and interflow) moving through preferential flow paths in the alluvial fans and tributaries, which are in turn sustained by groundwater discharge from the surrounding sandstones and quartzites of the Nardouw Sub-group and Peninsula Formation. The palmiet wetlands clearly retain a significant amount of water, leading to the maintenance of prolonged flows, and a larger baseflow. However, it is hypothesised that the occurrence of palmiet as the dominant species in these wetlands is due to the sustained low flows related to catchment geology and high hydrological connectivity between the catchment and the wetland that is enabled by flow paths that allow the free flow of water from the catchment to the wetland. It is further proposed that palmiet is possibly more reliant on a consistent water supply for its existence and survival than it is on acidic nutrient-poor water and soils as stated by other authors.

- Description: The title of my exhibition Bittersoet alludes to the self-exploratory nature of my practice, as I interrogate the personal memories associated with objects that characterise the relationship between myself and my mother (mamma). This supporting document, Narratives and Home: Remembering an almost forgotten walk, considers the key conceptual concerns informing my practice. In this mini-thesis, I address the question: ‘What is a home?’. Drawing from my own Fine Art Practice, I explore how home can be examined as a product of the imagination, rather than only as a physical place. I consider how ‘home’ is constructed as the primary objective within an ideological framework defined by history, memory and narrative. Engaging beyond the idea of ‘home’ as a fixed structure or place, I examine the idea of ‘home’ as something fluid that is negotiated and defined by the interaction between objects and language. It is concerned with dialectics of memory and narrative as they pertain directly to an experience of both searching for and reimagining home through metaphorical representations. In particular, I explore how home can be seen as equally familiar and unfamiliar, existing in-between, always changing, never fixed, rather in a constant state of flux. The concept of home is addressed in a dialogical process by using Afrikaans as my mother tongue, I narrate informal conversations between myself and my mother. These conversations transform and expand into hybrid words, memories and narratives to form a layered continuous dialogue between my practice and research. This notion relates to exploring oneself and the ‘fictions’ of the past. The self being fundamental to the individual comprehension of both ‘place’ and ‘space’.

- Description: There is ample evidence in the literature that gestures are important hand and bodily actions that play vital roles during interactions between learners and teachers in the mathematics classroom. These gestures enable both the teacher and the learner to visualise mathematical concepts and ideas. The aim of this Namibian interpretive case study, located in enactivist theory, was to analyse the types of gestures that three selected teachers at the junior primary phase (Grades 0–3) used in their teaching of mathematics. The study also interrogated the roles that these gestures played in the teaching process of the three teachers. As I intended to analyse the types of gestures the selected teachers used and understand their views and perceptions of the roles and functions their gestures played as visualisation tools in the teaching of mathematics, I observed ten lessons of each teacher and video recorded them. I then interviewed them (one-on-one stimulus-recall interviews) and interpreted the gestures they used and utterances they made about using these gestures. The types of gestures that the participating teachers used are classified according to McNeill‘s (1992) framework, namely pointing (deictic) gestures, iconic (illustrators) gestures, metaphoric gestures, beat (motor) gestures and symbolic (emblems) gestures. The study found that the participating teachers incorporated a variety of gestures into their lessons and used them strategically. According to the teachers, gestures made the lessons interesting and encouraged active participation of the learners in the lessons. The teachers also revealed that gestures assist in explaining mathematical concepts and thus affected the learners‘ understanding positively. This study strongly suggests that the usefulness and efficacy of employing gestures as visualisation tools in mathematics education should be strategically harnessed.

- Description: Glassy carbon electrodes or plates were modified with nanocomposites consisting of cobalt tetraaminophenoxyphthalocyanine (CoTAPhPc), reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (rGONs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The modified electrodes were characterized using cyclic voltammetry, scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) and time-of-flight-secondary ion mass spectrometer (TOF-SIMS). The electrocatalytic activity of the modified electrode was tested for detection of L-cysteine. The presence of CoTAPhPc on sequential layers of MWCNT and rGONs resulted in improved detection currents compared to CoTAPhPc alone or when MWCNT/rGONs are mixed in CoTAPhPc–MWCNT/ rGONs (mix)–glassy carbon electrode (GCE). - Description: Glassy carbon electrodes or plates were modified with nanocomposites consisting of cobalt tetraaminophenoxyphthalocyanine (CoTAPhPc), reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (rGONs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The modified electrodes were characterized using cyclic voltammetry, scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) and time-of-flight-secondary ion mass spectrometer (TOF-SIMS). Hence, it also depends on chaperones, including PfHsp90, to maintain protein functionality and pathogenesis, demonstrated inter alia by the sensitivity of parasites to Hsp90 inhibitors. In addition, PfHsp90 exists as a complex with the malarial Hop homologue, PfHop, in parasite lysates. Consequently, the purpose of this study was to explore P-PI assay formats that can confirm the interaction of PfHsp90 and PfHop and can be used to identify inhibitors of the interaction, preferably in a medium- to high-throughput screening mode. As a first approach, cell-based bioluminescence and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (BRET and FRET) assays were performed in HeLa cells. To facilitate this, expression plasmid constructs containing coding sequences of P. falciparum and mammalian Hsp90 and Hop and their interacting domains (Hsp90 C-domain and Hop TPR2A domain) fused to the BRET and FRET reporter proteins – yellow fluorescent protein (YFP), cyan fluorescent protein (CFP) and Renilla luciferase (Rluc) - were prepared and used for HeLa cell transient transfections. The FRET assay produced positive interaction signals for the full-length P. falciparum and mammalian Hsp90-Hop interactions. However, C-domain-TPR2A domain interactions were not detected, no interactions could be demonstrated with the BRET assay and western blotting experiments failed to detect expression of all the interaction partners in transiently transfected HeLa cells. Consequently, an alternative in vitro FRET assay format using recombinant proteins was investigated. Expression constructs for the P. falciparum and mammalian C-domains and TPR2A domains fused respectively to YFP and CFP were prepared and the corresponding fusion proteins expressed and purified from E. coli. No interaction was found with the mammalian interaction partners, but interaction of the P. falciparum C-domain and TPR2A domain was consistently detected with a robust Z’ factor value of 0.54. A peptide corresponding to the PfTPR2A domain sequence primarily responsible for Hsp90 binding (based on a human TPR2A peptide described by Horibe et al., 2011) was designed and showed dose-dependent inhibition of the interaction, with 53.7% inhibition at 100 μM. The components of the assay are limited to the purified recombinant proteins, requires minimal liquid steps and may thus be a useful primary screening format for identifying inhibitors of P. falciparum Hsp90-Hop interaction.

Monetary policy is an important source of economic news and affects the risk perceptions of market participants. This study will improve the understanding of stock price determinants and possibly influence SA monetary policy in guarding against possible shocks originating from abroad. Using Federal Reserve Open Market Committee (FOMC) announcements over the period 2008 – 2014, the research studied changes in volatility of the South African FTSE/JSE All Share Index returns over this period. An event study and GARCH model approach was adopted to reach the goals of the analysis. The findings were a statistically insignificant connection between SA stock returns and both anticipated and unanticipated US Federal Reserve announcements. Over the sample period, each shock to SA stock returns persisted for approximately 4-5 months. Although SA stock return volatility demonstrated clustering behaviour (indicating sensitivity to economic shocks), the research could not find an obvious relationship between these spikes in volatility and US Federal Reserve announcements. It is concluded that South African stock returns do not change in response to unexpected US monetary policy announcements.

- Description: The removal of microalgae from high rate algal ponds (HRAP) in waste-water treatment systems remains a constraint to their use in effluent treatment systems. Conventional algae harvesting methods often have high energy demands, take up lots of space, are expensive to operate or are time consuming. The aim of the study was to determine if fish such as Clarias gariepinus and Oreochromis mossambicus, could be used to remove microalgae from waste-water treatment ponds (in the absence/presence of a flocculent in the former and in the absence or presence of pH moderation in the latter), and to investigate the subsequent influence of algae concentration on several water quality parameters. The age of Clarias gariepinus (3-12 months) had a positive relationship with the distance between gill rakers (98.27 to 163.34 μm; y=90.576+4.823*x: R²=0.549; F(1,18)=21.867; p<0.001) and these data suggested that these fish might be efficient at removing algae from HRAP effluent. However, this was not the case, even with flocculent application (but this result might have been confounded by very high pH readings, at which flocculation is less likely to occur). Oreochromis mossambicus removed some of this algae, but the pH was too high for tilapia culture. It was not possible to moderate the increase in pH by keeping tanks in the dark and thus preventing photosynthesis; but pH fluctuation in HRAP effluent could be moderated using CO2 sparging in an attempt to make the environment more hospitable for tilapia (the average pH that was moderated with CO2 was 8.43±0.06, whereas the unmoderated average was 10.65±0.06). However, pH moderation using CO2 sparging did not increase the rate at which algae were removed by O. mossambicus; rather, it compromised O2 concentration which dropped to 4.17±1.26 mg/l after five hours of CO2 sparging, whereas it increased to 20.50±1.41 mg/l in treatments with unadjusted pH over the same period. Fish can be used to remove algae from treated effluent, and Oreochromis mossambicus remains a recommended species. Future work needs to investigate moderating fluctuations in pH and O2 concentration to further facilitate this method of algae removal.

This is especially true for athletes who exert their bodies to achieve superior performance and attempt to delay the onset of fatigue as far as possible. However, fatigue is a progressive process that is part of physical exercise. It is therefore, important to understand the various factors associated with fatigue. Objective: The purpose of this research project was to observe the changes in perceptual, physiological responses, and workload while participants performed a fatiguing cycling exercise task. In order to observe the aforementioned changes, one of the three variables, either perceptual, physiological responses or workload was kept constant, while the other two were observed as dependent variables. There were three test conditions, which permitted each variable to be kept constant in at least one of the three test conditions. Methods: Thirty-six apparently healthy university students were recruited for the study. The exercise was of 35 minute duration for each condition, with the data collection for HR (physiological response), RPE (perceptual response), and power output (workload) occurring at two minute intervals from the eighth minute until the thirtieth minute. The participants were required to perform a peak-power-output test in order set the relative performance ranges for each participant in order to elicit an observable fatigue response from all the participants. The three conditions included constant HR response, constant workload, and constant RPE response where each participant performed all of the above conditions on separate days.Results: The perceptual (RPE) response increased significantly (p<0.05) over time in all three test conditions, even under the constant RPE condition where it was expected to remain unchanged throughout the test duration. The HR response only demonstrated a significant (p<0.05) increase over time under the constant workload condition. Lastly, workload remained constant in all three testing conditions. Conclusion: Participants may be able to exercise for longer periods during sub-maximal exercise if they disregard the RPE warning response. In the current study, the RPE response illustrated that participants were being exerted more over time; however, the participants still had physiological and workload capacity to continue exercising. This research project has confirmed the fact that fatigue is a multifaceted phenomenon. Furthermore, it has been illustrated that RPE response alone as an indicator of fatigue onset may be misleading as participants did not breach the HR and workload steady state during the current research. Therefore, it may be more appropriate to assess fatigue onset through the assessment of more than one fatigue variable in order to ensure increased accuracy of the participants’ fatigue state assessment.

- Description: J.R.R Tolkien wrote, in his Mythopoeia, that “He sees no stars who does not see them first, of living silver made that sudden burst, to flame like flowers beneath the ancient song”. In his defense of myth-making, he formulates the argument that the attribution of meaning is an act of creation - that “trees are not ‘trees’ until so named and seen” - and that this capacity for creation defines the human creature. The scientific endeavour, in this context, can be understood as a social expression of a fundamental feature of humanity, and from this endeavour flows much understanding. This thesis, one thread among many, focuses on the study of astronomical objects as seen by the radio waves they emit. What are radio waves? Electromagnetic waves were theorised by James Clerk Maxwell (Maxwell 1864) in his great theoretical contribution to modern physics, their speed matching the speed of light as measured by Ole Christensen R0mer and, later, James Bradley. It was not until Heinrich Rudolf Hertz’s 1887 experiment that these waves were measured in a laboratory, leading to the dawn of radio communications - and, later, radio astronomy. The link between radio waves and light was one of association: light is known to behave as a wave (Young double-slit experiment), with the same propagation speed as electromagnetic radiation. Light “proper” is also known to exist beyond the optical regime: Herschel’s experiment shows that when diffracted through a prism, sunlight warms even those parts of a desk which are not observed to be lit (first evidence of infrared light). The link between optical light and unseen electromagnetic radiation is then an easy step to make, and one confirmed through countless technological applications (e.g. optical fiber to name but one). And as soon as this link is established, a question immediately comes to the mind of the astronomer: what does the sky, our Universe, look like to the radio “eye”? Radio astronomy has a short but storied history: from Karl Jansky’s serendipitous observation of the centre of the Milky Way, which outshines our Sun in the radio regime, in 1933, to Grote Reber’s hand-built back-yard radio antenna in 1937, which successfully detected radio emission from the Milky Way itself, to such monumental projects as the Square Kilometer Array and its multiple pathfinders, it has led to countless discoveries and the opening of a truly new window on the Universe. The work presented in this thesis is a contribution to this discipline - the culmination of three years of study, which is a rather short time to get a firm grasp of radio interferometry both in theory and in practice. The need for robust, automated methods - which are improving daily, thanks to the tireless labour of the scientists in the field - is becoming ever stronger as the SKA approaches, looming large on the horizon; but even today, in the precursor era of LOFAR, MeerKAT and other pathfinders, it is keenly felt. When I started my doctorate, the sheer scale of the task at hand felt overwhelming - to actually be able to contribute to its resolution seemed daunting indeed! Thankfully, as the saying goes, no society sets for itself material goals which it cannot achieve. This thesis took place at an exciting time for radio interferometry: at the start of my doctorate, the LOFAR international stations were - to my knowledge - only beginning to be used, and even then, only tentatively; MeerKAT had not yet shown its first light; the techniques used throughout my work were still being developed. At the time of writing, great strides have been made. One of the greatest technical challenges of LOFAR - imaging using the international stations - is starting to become reality. This technical challenge is the key problem that this thesis set out to address. While we only achieved partial success so far, it is a testament to the difficulty of the task that it is not yet truly resolved. One of the major results of this thesis is a model of a bright resolved source near a famous extragalactic field: properly modeling this source not only allows the use of international LOFAR stations, but also grants deeper access to the extragalactic field itself, which is otherwise polluted by the 3C source’s sidelobes. This result was only achieved thanks to the other major result of this thesis: the development of a theoretical framework with which to better understand the effect of calibration errors on images made from interferometric data, and an algorithm to strongly mitigate them. The structure of this manuscript is as follows: we begin with an introduction to radio interferometry, LOFAR, and the emission mechanisms which dominate for our field of interest. These introductions are primarily intended to give a brief overview of the technical aspects of the data reduced in this thesis. We follow with an overview of the Measurement Equation formalism, which underpins our theoretical work. This is the keystone of this thesis. We then show the theoretical work that was developed as part of the research work done during the doctorate - which was published in Astronomy & Astrophysics. Its practical application - a quality-based weighting scheme - is used throughout our data reduction. This data reduction is the next topic of this thesis: we contextualise the scientific interest of the data we reduce, and explain both the methods and the results we achieve.

- Description: J.R.R Tolkien wrote, in his Mythopoeia, that “He sees no stars who does not see them first, of living silver made that sudden burst, to flame like flowers beneath the ancient song”. In his defense of myth-making, he formulates the argument that the attribution of meaning is an act of creation - that “trees are not ‘trees’ until so named and seen” - and that this capacity for creation defines the human creature. The scientific endeavour, in this context, can be understood as a social expression of a fundamental feature of humanity, and from this endeavour flows much understanding. This thesis, one thread among many, focuses on the study of astronomical objects as seen by the radio waves they emit. What are radio waves? Electromagnetic waves were theorised by James Clerk Maxwell (Maxwell 1864) in his great theoretical contribution to modern physics, their speed matching the speed of light as measured by Ole Christensen R0mer and, later, James Bradley. It was not until Heinrich Rudolf Hertz’s 1887 experiment that these waves were measured in a laboratory, leading to the dawn of radio communications - and, later, radio astronomy. The link between radio waves and light was one of association: light is known to behave as a wave (Young double-slit experiment), with the same propagation speed as electromagnetic radiation. Light “proper” is also known to exist beyond the optical regime: Herschel’s experiment shows that when diffracted through a prism, sunlight warms even those parts of a desk which are not observed to be lit (first evidence of infrared light). The link between optical light and unseen electromagnetic radiation is then an easy step to make, and one confirmed through countless technological applications (e.g. optical fiber to name but one). And as soon as this link is established, a question immediately comes to the mind of the astronomer: what does the sky, our Universe, look like to the radio “eye”? Radio astronomy has a short but storied history: from Karl Jansky’s serendipitous observation of the centre of the Milky Way, which outshines our Sun in the radio regime, in 1933, to Grote Reber’s hand-built back-yard radio antenna in 1937, which successfully detected radio emission from the Milky Way itself, to such monumental projects as the Square Kilometer Array and its multiple pathfinders, it has led to countless discoveries and the opening of a truly new window on the Universe. The work presented in this thesis is a contribution to this discipline - the culmination of three years of study, which is a rather short time to get a firm grasp of radio interferometry both in theory and in practice. The need for robust, automated methods - which are improving daily, thanks to the tireless labour of the scientists in the field - is becoming ever stronger as the SKA approaches, looming large on the horizon; but even today, in the precursor era of LOFAR, MeerKAT and other pathfinders, it is keenly felt. When I started my doctorate, the sheer scale of the task at hand felt overwhelming - to actually be able to contribute to its resolution seemed daunting indeed! Therefore, in order to reach these goals, this thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter explores the definitions pertaining to what it means to be a refugee. The second chapter takes into account the different types of victims that are excluded from the notion of refugee. The third chapter considers the consequences of having a restricted understanding who qualifies to be a refugee. The fourth chapter provides alternative solutions that would assist in providing a more comprehensive definition. Furthermore, chapter five discusses the necessity to further expand the refugee concept to include other forms of victims that are not already included. Overall, this thesis seeks to support expansion of the term ‘refugee‘ since the reasons for forced migration have changed, and individuals are not only fleeing from individual persecution, for instance, but from other situations that can be considered to fall under forced migration. Consequently, extending the definition of the term ‘refugee‘ should occur, because refusing to consider revising the term amounts to a refusal to show acceptance and empathy to today‘s other migrants who are also experiencing survival challenges in their home countries.

- Description: Pelagic larval stages of most marine benthic species are important in maintaining coastal populations of adults. Several physio-chemical factors such as currents, winds, larval behaviour and time have an influence on the dispersal and transport of larvae to the adult habitat but their role is however still poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the alongshore and cross-shore transport and temporal delivery of invertebrate larvae at four sites (Kenton on Sea, Cannon Rocks, Schoenmakerskop and Cape St Francis) along the south east coast of Eastern Cape, South Africa. Larval distribution of several taxa was determined during two sampling periods, by collecting water samples at nearshore line transects (3 distances: 900m, 1500m and 2400m – perpendicular to the shore) and at three depths (surface, thermocline/middle, bottom), which ranged from 15m (inshore) to 50m (offshore). Physical properties (current speed and direction, dissolved oxygen, fluorescence, turbidity, temperature, salinity, pH, pressure, density and conductivity) were measured and coupled in order to further understand larval distribution. The larvae were analysed as both total abundance and separately as the abundances of a variety of taxa which were: Perna perna, Mytilus galloprovincialis, oysters, early and late nauplii and cyprids. Larval settlement and recruitment on the rocky shores were measured by monthly deployment and collection of 20 (10 each for barnacles and mussels) artificial collectors at each site, which were preserved in ethanol or frozen for further processing. Multiple Permutational Multivariate Analysis of Variance (PERMANOVA) analyses were used to test the effects of site, depth and distance from the shore for the nearshore larvae (taxa analysed separately). In addition, a distance based linear model (distLM) was performed to analyse the relationship between the total larval abundance and the above mentioned physical variables. Multiple two-way analyses of variance (ANOVA) were performed to test the effects of months and sites on the settlement and recruitment of the larvae (P. perna, M. galloprovincialis, other bivalves, cyprids and juvenile barnacles) arriving on the shore. For the nearshore larval distribution, results from the PERMANOVAs revealed that most taxa showed a significant site and depth interactions with the exception of ‘early nauplii’ taxon. Also nearly all taxa were found within the thermocline, besides ‘oyster’ and ‘cyprids’ which were located at thermocline or bottom. Larvae were also located at variable distances from the shore, with most occurring at the offshore stations. Furthermore, there was a geographical separation of larval abundance according to sites, with most larvae located at Cannon Rocks and Kenton on Sea and least at Schoenmakerskop and Cape St Francis. For the settlement and recruitment, most taxa showed a seasonal trend, with the highest abundance of settlers and recruits expectedly appearing during the summer months of the sampling period. Additionally there was a site effect for most taxa (P. perna, M. galloprovincialis, other bivalves and juvenile barnacles), where settlers and recruits were mostly found at Cannon Rocks. Significant differences in abundance of settlers and recruits amongst the four sites indicate spatial and temporal variability for the targeted 180km stretch of coast. Overall for this study, taxon and ontogenetic stage of larvae were important in the distribution and abundance of larvae. A multi-threading software countermeasure to mitigate side channel analysis in the time domain

- Description: This research is the first of its kind to investigate the utilisation of a multi-threading software-based countermeasure to mitigate Side Channel Analysis (SCA) attacks, with a particular focus on the AES-128 cryptographic algorithm. This investigation is novel, as there has not been a software-based countermeasure relying on multi-threading to our knowledge. The research has been tested on the Atmel microcontrollers, as well as a more fully featured system in the form of the popular Raspberry Pi that utilises the ARM7 processor. The main contributions of this research is the introduction of a multi-threading software based countermeasure used to mitigate SCA attacks on both an embedded device and a Raspberry Pi. These threads are comprised of various mathematical operations which are utilised to generate electromagnetic (EM) noise resulting in the obfuscation of the execution of the AES-128 algorithm. A novel EM noise generator known as the FRIES noise generator is implemented to obfuscate data captured in the EM field. FRIES comprises of hiding the execution of AES-128 algorithm within the EM noise generated by the 512 Secure Hash Algorithm (SHA) from the libcrypto++ and OpenSSL libraries. In order to evaluate the proposed countermeasure, a novel attack methodology was developed where the entire secret AES-128 encryption key was recovered from a Raspberry Pi, which has not been achieved before. The FRIES noise generator was pitted against this new attack vector and other known noise generators. The results exhibited that the FRIES noise generator withstood this attack whilst other existing techniques still leaked out secret information. The visual location of the AES-128 encryption algorithm in the EM spectrum and key recovery was prevented. These results demonstrated that the proposed multi-threading software based countermeasure was able to be resistant to existing and new forms of attacks, thus verifying that a multi-threading software based countermeasure can serve to mitigate SCA attacks.

The main contributions of this research is the introduction of a multi-threading software based countermeasure used to mitigate SCA attacks on both an embedded device and a Raspberry Pi. These threads are comprised of various mathematical operations which are utilised to generate electromagnetic (EM) noise resulting in the obfuscation of the execution of the AES-128 algorithm. A novel EM noise generator known as the FRIES noise generator is implemented to obfuscate data captured in the EM field. FRIES comprises of hiding the execution of AES-128 algorithm within the EM noise generated by the 512 Secure Hash Algorithm (SHA) from the libcrypto++ and OpenSSL libraries. In order to evaluate the proposed countermeasure, a novel attack methodology was developed where the entire secret AES-128 encryption key was recovered from a Raspberry Pi, which has not been achieved before. The FRIES noise generator was pitted against this new attack vector and other known noise generators. The results exhibited that the FRIES noise generator withstood this attack whilst other existing techniques still leaked out secret information. The visual location of the AES-128 encryption algorithm in the EM spectrum and key recovery was prevented. These results demonstrated that the proposed multi-threading software based countermeasure was able to be resistant to existing and new forms of attacks, thus verifying that a multi-threading software based countermeasure can serve to mitigate SCA attacks.

Previously reported BODIPY dyes (4,4′-difluoro-1,7-tetramethyl-3,5-(2-dihydroxy)-2,6-diiodo-8-(4-bromo)-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (5) and 4,4′-difluoro-1,7-tetramethyl-3,5-(2-dithiophene)-2,6-diiodo-8-(phenyl)-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (6)) were also used. Pluronic® F-127 and cyclodextrins were used as solubilizing drug delivery agents for the synthesized BODIPY dyes. The encapsulation of BODIPY dyes with Pluronic® F-127 micelles improved the water solubility of the BODIPY 5. Further modification of Pluronic® F-127 by coating with folate-functionalized chitosan for targeted delivery of BODIPY 1c and 6 was explored. The BODIPY dyes and their encapsulation complexes exhibited significant inhibition of human MCF-7 breast cancer cell growth. When cyclodextrins were used as nanocarriers, the inclusion complexes of BODIPY 4c with mβCD were found to enhance the water-solubility of the dye. Greater photoinactivation of Staphylococcus aureus was observed for the inclusion complexes when compared to the effect of solutions of non-complexed BODIPY 4c. The cyclodextrin inclusion complexes of porphyrin 7b with mβCD were also found to enhance the water-solubility of 7b. When the photodynamic effect was evaluated, solutions of the porphyrin alone and their inclusion complexes were found to have significant photodynamic effects against human MCF-7 breast cancer cells.
