- There can be little doubt that the manufacturing sector has an important role to play in the process of economic growth and development. The impact of growth in output and employment in this sector is likely to spread through an economy as it creates opportunities for the expansion of output and employment in other non-primary branches of the economy such as the retail and wholesale trade, transport, communication and tourism, the financial and insurance sector and the social, community and government sectors. This Working Paper analyses the structure and growth of manufacturing industry in Region D of the Southern African economy.
